Terror chaos in FranceUP TO 77 have been killed and

65 injured after a truck mowed down two kilometres of crowds who were celebrating Bastille Day along the Promenade des Anglais in the French city of Nice.

The incident which occurred around 11pm local time during a fireworks display is being treated as a terrorist attack at this point.

Tour company Topdeck has confirmed an Australian guest on one of the firm’s itineraries was hurt during the incident.

“As of 2.30am local time all of our customers are safe and accounted for,” the company said in a statement.

“Unfortunately one of our customers has reported some minor injuries”.

Topdeck’s family liaison team has been in direct contact with the injured customer’s relatives.

The Australian Dept of Foreign Affairs & Trade is advising Aussie travellers in France to exercise a high degree of caution and for tourists in Nice to stay indoors.

A state of emergency in France until 26 Jul has been extended by three months in the wake of the attack, the French govt said.

Atout France regional manager Australia Patrick Benamhou told Travel Daily: “The shocking news from Nice has again left us very saddened”.

“Nice is a very popular city for Australian travellers.

“This is a tragic paradox that the subject of the attack was the people celebrating liberty, equality and fraternity on Bastille Day last night,” Benamhou said.

Road tripping revivalTHE caravanning industry has

proclaimed the latest Tourism Australia Research data that forecasts domestic tourism will ratchet up 3.1% per annum over the next ten years (TD Wed) will be a boon for the sector.

“We are witnessing a new and robust era in domestic tourism that has the potential to introduce new consumers to the caravan and camping experience,” ceo Stuart Lamont said today.

A WEDGE-tailed eagle thought a seven-year-old audience member looked like suitable prey during a wildlife show in Alice Springs at the Desert Park attraction last week.

The young boy was left with cuts on his face after the eagle swooped him and clutched its sharp talons around his head (captured below) instead of flying to a log as planned.

The offending bird has been suspended from the show while an investigation continues.

Quarter century of AccorHotels

ACCORHOTELS celebrated 25 years of operation in the Australian market last night, fittingly at the group’s first hotel - Novotel Sydney Darling Harbour.

Speaking at a celebratory event attended by over 100 partners, AccorHotels regional director of sales & marketing NSW/ACT, Megan Fleming said when the property initially opened, it and the Darling Harbour precinct, were deemed a ‘white elephant’.

Fast-track a quarter of a century, AccorHotels’ footprint spans four hotels in the immediate vicinity (two Novotel & two ibis branded

properties) & 200-plus nationally. “As part of the Accor vision,

we are very pleased to say that Darling Harbour’s potential as a prime tourism asset is still making headlines today and a great success,” Fleming remarked.

The addition of the 35-storey Sofitel Darling Harbour, slated to open in Nov next year, will further cement AccorHotels’ presence in the zone, bulking up the French hotel company’s room inventory by a further 600 keys.

Fleming is pictured above with Richard Holt, general manager AccorHotels Darling Harbour.

Verifying suspicious scenarios is the best action to avoid fraud, but, no matter how vigilant your

consultants are, some bookings may pass through that warrant investigation.

Be alert

Some suspicious activity can be identified through customer reporting or Business Intelligence using alerts and management dashboards. If you have a BI solution, consider creating a management dashboard with some of the alerts below:

• Last-minute bookings in leisure • Client has no local address • Flights originate outside of or don’t include Australia • The passenger is not the credit cardholder, especially if the booking is of high value• A single credit card has been used to pay for several routings, travel dates, and passenger last names • Booking is made up of several different credit card payments • Client uses a religious/medical title e.g. “Doctor Smith”

Be Secure

If you are a Tramada client pay attention to the Credit Card Report and consider using the tramada® Payment Gateway to process credit cards payments online within the secure PCI DSS compliant tramada® environment. Our Payment Gateway partner, Mint Payments, solutions are audited and certified to bank, PCI and Schemes (Visa, MasterCard, Amex and Diners) standards and international payment regulation levels. Mint also offers an integrated anti-fraud solution as an additional service for customers selling online. This especially relevant for OTA’s.

WHEN it comes to keeping its members informed, few national retail networks can compete with Travellers Choice.

Member shareholders gathered in capital cities across Australia this month to hear in-depth briefings on the company’s current activities, including its ever-expanding suite of support services, by Chairman Trish Ridsdale and Managing Director Christian Hunter.

“As always these events also provide an opportunity for senior management to listen,” says Hunter, “with members discussing the key issues they currently face and offering invaluable feedback on how we can be even more

effective in helping them grow their business.”

This year’s meetings also provided an opportunity for members to meet Travellers Choice’s newly-appointed General Manager Sales Nicola Strudwick.
