What is a Clutch?• Couples two rotating shafts or other rotating components with

different speeds

Page 3: Friction Clutch

Most Commonly known use• Automobiles (motorcycles)• Used when shifting gears or when stopped

ComponentsA clutch disc has two lining sections that are riveted to the marcel.

How it works• Most older vehicles use mechanical clutch linkage.

Page 9: Friction Clutch

How it works• The hydraulic clutch linkage reservoir, master cylinder, and

slave cylinder are connected by metal and plastic lines. Note the release bearing and concentric slave cylinder.

Typical Failure• Wear on friction plates or clutch disk/plate• Consequence: could slip

Page 12: Friction Clutch

Other Typical Failure• Mishandling

• Could cause slight clutch deformation (1 mm gap required for successful operation)

Page 13: Friction Clutch

Other Typical Failure• Overheating

• When clutch is used too frequently it leads to over heating of friction plate

• “Riding the Clutch”• Results:• Reduced friction coefficient• More time to reengage• Leads to wear
