The President’s Corner – Greg WalshHouston gains – Calgary loses. Alas, we start

this month with a fond farewell to one of illustrious members, Josh Carter. Josh, wife Linda and daugh-ter Lauren are taking a career move to Houston. A member since 2008 and currently one of our Club’s two Motorsport Coordinators, Josh has been a highly respected, entertaining and friendly driver and con-tributor: during the Calgary Race City days with Driving School Instruction, our most exciting BBQ Master of Ceremonies, Car Modification talks, Try-A-Kart instiga-tor and lately as the TRSS Street Survival Classroom Instructor. His highly modified 2007 BMW 335i, billed as the Millennium Falcon of BMW’s, has graced the cover of our Newsletter twice. We wish the Carter family all the best in their future endeavors and our doors are always open to them.

You may have noticed over the past month or so that we have migrated our email send outs to the MailChimp platform. We hope that this format, which allows photos and hot buttons back to items of interest including registration and our advertisers, is both more informative and more efficient of your time. Any comments are appreciated!

Speaking of events, the May CC&C, despite some crappy weather again had great attendance. We certainly can’t wait for a Saturday with good weather where sunglasses are required to look at the member’s cars.

Victor Yuen has started our Informal Drives. The May 9th one was a glorious drive out to Bragg Creek and then to Turner Valley by some twisty backcountry roads. The original cars met up with some other members and after a strength building meal, the Tour headed off on more byways as no one wanted to head home on such a wonderful spring day. See Events for registration for the next time.

In other news, Rocky Mountain Motorsports recently received all approvals to move ahead with construction. A recent announcement indi-cated ………… (subject to confirmation – awaiting May 22 final review with county)

The E30/E46 Retro Road Test was another fun filled day of driving. Look to a future Newsletter issue for details.

TRSS June 15Just a reminder that registration closes on June 12 for our Saturday

June 15th TRSS Street Survival. We already have a fairly full class and may decide to cut off registrations early, so please don’t wait for the last minute. See www.bmwcsa.ca/TRSS for all details and registration.

Please don’t forget the Annual Father’s Day Drive on Sunday June 16th. We are initiating a new plan for Father’s Day drives. A three- or four-year rotation of routes is being implemented. This year we will keep to the foothills but our destination will be Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. If you have a suggestion for other routes please do let us know. On June 16th we will be leaving as usual from the Shawnessy’s Tim Horton’s and heading to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site. We will be motoring down scenic parts of the Cowboy Trail and some cross country roads to enjoy a great Heritage site. Also – no sub sandwiches this year! The site has a great cafeteria serving everything from Bison to conventional burgers. However, please bring snacks as we will probably not be at the site until around 1:00 PM. This may also be a great educational experience for your kids and grandkids or any visitors you might be hosting. See Kalender for registration details.

Also, we will have our usual display at the European Car Show in Stanley Park on Saturday July 20th. The show is free to view with an insignifi-cant fee if you wish to display your favourite Bimmer with your fellow Club enthusiasts. It is a great way to see many marquees and cars of interest and champion the BMW Marque.

This fall we will be having a presentation on Automobile Audio enhancements and other electronic additions to your favourite Drive. This has been instigated by Club member Jeff Trost. I thank Jeff for (initiating?) the opportunity and remind you all to keep the Club aware of similar oppor-tunities of interest.

Ultimate LaunchBMW Calgary and BMW Gallery hosted the Ultimate Launch Event at the

Big Four Building on April 5th. It was quite the social gathering with almost as much eye candy in the parking lot as on display. Steve Page of Barenaked Ladies fame put on a highly entertaining show creating a high energy and fun atmosphere. Hans Blesse, President of BMW Canada and Tony Dilawri, head of the Dilawri Group, and all your favorite BMW reps, dressed to the nines, mingled with the 1500 odd guests. Attendees received attractive offers on new cars.

While the new X5, X7, Z4 Roadster and the 3 and 8 series were all on display; the hit of the show was the X3M and X4M Competition models. Both were hidden in a tent, as this was an official viewing before the official launch at the Shanghai Auto Show.

Activity Coupe (SAC) segments for the first time. While you can get the regular and Motorsport versions of each model it was the M Competition series that filled every driver’s dreams.

Both the X3M and X4M use the new six-cylinder in-line high revving engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. Billed as the most powerful straight-six gas engine ever to see action in a BMW M car, the M Competition version gener-ates 375-kW/510 hp from its 3.0-litre displacement or 22-kW/30 hp more than the standard M version. Peak torque is 600 Nm (442 lb-ft).

The BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M both sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds, while the Competition hits 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.1 seconds

The combined city/highway fuel consumption is around 10.5-l/100 km (26.9 mpg imp), which is in the range of many other more economically tuned vehicles and speaks to BMW’s engine design prowess.

Power is delivered with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and uses the new M xDrive all wheel-drive system, which made its debut in the BMW M5. The M xDrive system has rear-wheel bias offering the BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M owners two AWD driving modes. The centrally controlled interac-tion between M xDrive and the Active M Differential at the rear axle allows the all-wheel-drive system to split the engine’s power between the four wheels as required to deliver optimal traction, agility and directional stability.

M-specific chassis technology pro-vides sublime dynamics through the combination of model-specific body strengthening elements and tuned chas-sis technology.

With three settings selectable at the touch of a button, the M-specific suspen-sion’s electronically controlled dampers enable both excellent everyday comfort and extremely direct contact with the road, with low wheel and body move-ments. The bespoke kinematics and elas-tokinematics of the M-specific suspen-

sion – with its double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle – deliver precise wheel location and directional stability.

The chassis technology delivers precisely controllable on-limit han-dling with M-specific steering (including M Servotronic and variable ratio), powerful M compound brakes and 20-inch M light-alloy wheels (21-inch for Competition).

Like the damper control systems and M xDrive modes, the engine and transmission characteristics and steering set-up can be adjusted at the touch of a button. The DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system allows controlled wheel slip in M Dynamic Mode and, needless to say, can also be switched off.

The content shown in the optional Head-Up Display can be specified via the iDrive menu. The driver can store two overall set-up options – con-figured as desired from the above parameters in the iDrive menu and select them using the two M buttons on the steering wheel.

The M and M Competition features optimized supply of cooling air and aerodynamics.

Inside the cars, the electrically adjustable sports seats, Vernasca leather upholstery, M-specific cockpit, M leather steering wheel and M gearshift selector lever create a sporty and luxurious ambience. The Competition models bring further exclusive accents to the exterior, in the form of High-gloss Black for the BMW kidney grille surround, exterior mirror caps and

M gills, and the rear spoiler of the Sports Activity Coupe. Their standard equipment also includes 21-inch M light-alloy wheels in polished Black and an M Sport exhaust system. A further enhancement includes M Sport seats with extended Merino leather upholstery, model-specific doorsill plates and a model nameplate on the centre console. Options for the Competition models include special bi-colour leather upholstery variants with Alcantara applications.

The optional M Carbon exterior package (expected to be available from

August 2019), features design elements in carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) for the front air intakes, the air blades in the front apron, the rear diffuser and the exterior mirror caps. On the BMW X4 M and BMW X4 M Competition, a CFRP rear spoiler joins these elements.

Among the items standard in the BMW X3 M, BMW X4 M and Competition models are LED headlights, the hi-fi speaker system and the ConnectedDrive navigation package including the Navigation system Professional. The options list includes cutting-edge driver assistance systems and the digital services from BMW Connected and BMW ConnectedDrive.

50 years of BMW Turbo Power in Motorsport

BMW Turbo Power is a success story in motorsport – and has been for 50 years. In 1969, BMW won the European Touring Car Championship with Dieter Quester (AUT) and the BMW 2002 TI, doing pioneering work and writing history in the process.

The first BMW Turbo in motor racing –the M121 – provided the neces-sary drive. After many more BMW Turbo engines in the 50 years since then, the newly-developed Class 1 regulation-compliant BMW P48 engine will make its debut in the BMW M4 DTM when this season’s DTM kicks off at Hockenheim (GER) at the start of May. The new BMW P48 is one of the most efficient BMW race engines in history.

Times may have changed, but the outstanding properties of the engine have remained the same.

Despite the 50 years that lie between them, the two high-performance engines have a number of similarities: both are straight, four-cylinder engines with a two-liter capacity and a turbo charger. In both the BMW M121 and the P48, the sensitive engine components must be protected by a heat shield from the heat emitted by the turbo charger. A mechanical injection pump supplies the engine with fuel in both cases.

More than twice as much power with far less consumption and a much longer service life.

The pressure, with which the combustion air is supplied to the engine, can hardly be compared between the engines.

With 0.98 bar of pressure, the first generation of turbo race engine achieved approximately 280 hp at 6,500 rpm. The exhaust fan was theo-retically capable of developing a boost pressure of 1.76 bar. However, the pressure in the cylinder would have been so great, that the cylinder head would have lifted off.

Today, boost pressures of up to 2.5 bar are possible with more than 600 hp.

The P48 crankcase and cylinder head were manufactured in a special sand-casting procedure in the BMW Landshut foundry. The ignition distribu-tor, fan, wet sump and boost valve have since disappeared from the engine. There is no longer a direct charge air pipe, which supplies the engine with compressed air without any cooling.

The P48 has a sophisticated dry sump system with the oil tank directly attached to the engine. Efficient charge air-cooling also allows for increased performance and efficiency. Auxiliary units, like the starter and generator, are no longer on the engine, and are mounted on the transaxle gearbox behind the engine. Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic has replaced the old aluminum weld-and-cast construction on the plenum chamber.

The butterfly is now moved electrically and no longer controlled by a mechanical throttle rod. Instead of an open ignition harness, the electrical wires in the P48 are housed in a protective, carbon cable tray.

One of the most efficient BMW race engines of all time.One of the key aspects of the P48 is its exceptionally good consump-

tion. As the regulations limit the permitted fuel flow, every fuel saving means better performance. It is actually more than 50 percent efficient than the M121 from 1969. This was achieved with the help of the high-pressure direct fuel injection, as found in BMW production engines, as well as a mix-ture preparation and combustion – tried and tested in many simulations and tests – which allows the engine to operate in a “lean burn mode”.

Minimization of friction losses, through the aforementioned oil system and the use of high temperature-resistant components that do not require cooling by the fuel, make the P48 one of the most efficient BMW race engines of today.

BMW Turbo engines guarantee maximum performance.Despite all this, the original 1969 turbo need by no means hide when it

comes to performance. As the developers of the BMW 2002 TI were not per-mitted to increase the displacement, the performance had to be increased elsewhere. The engine no longer aspirated its mixture itself. Instead, it was blown into the engine via the turbo charger. This transformed the BMW 2002 TI into a real sports car, with a top speed of 240 km/h. This was followed in 1973 by the first German car manufactured in production with a turbo charger: the BMW 2002 turbo.

The next chapter in the story of BMW Turbo in motorsport is set to be written in DTM racing. The Class 1 regulations herald a new technical era. More powerful, four-cylinder turbo engines have replaced the previous V8 engines. The sound of the new turbos is awesome, the performance nothing short of impressive.

However, their best feature is their efficiency. At 85 kilograms, the new turbo power unit weighs little more than half of its predecessor. The lightweight model boasts impressive figures compared to the DTM engines used up to this point: half the displacement, more power, less consumption.

BMW Type P48, R4 turbo engine with direct fuel injection:

• Capacity: 1,999 cc

• Weight: 85 kg (basic weight, according to regulations)

• Bore: between 86 and 90 mm

• Engine speed: max. 9,500 rpm

• Power output: over 600 hp

• Service life: over 6,000 km (per season)

• Fuel mass flow restrictor: mandatory 95 kg/h, 100 kg/h with push-to-pass activated

• Cylinder block and cylinder head made from cast aluminum in the BMW foundry in Landshut

• Steel crankshaft

• Four valves per cylinder, operated via rocker arm

• Steel camshafts, operated via gears

• High-pressure, direct injection, as with BMW production engines with 350 bar

• Dry sump

Despite the significant increase in power, the unit is designed for reli-ability and durability, and lasts roughly 6,000 kilometers. 1.5 engines may be used per car over the course of the season.

The Push-to-Pass system, new in 2019, provides an extra 5 kg/h of fuel for a duration of five seconds, resulting in an increase in power of roughly 30 hp.

The turbo charger in the P48 supplies the engine with 400 liters of air per second – 3,500 times as much as a human breathes.

The pistons accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in less than a thousandth of a second – 1,200 times faster than a lunar rocket.

The water pump shifts roughly 18,000 liters per hour. This is fast enough to fill a bathtub in roughly 20 seconds.

1,005 drawings were made for the final assembly of the engine, which consists of roughly 2,000 individual parts. Laid next to each other, they would cover the floor of a 250 sq. m apartment.

A new era in touring car racing is dawning with the BMW P48 and the Class 1regulations – just as it did with the engine’s forefather from 1969. The turbo is ready for ignition – today, as it was 50 years ago.

Northern Germany 2020 – the travel bug really bit some of the Swiss tourers! Almost immediately after we came back from Switzerland 2018, some of the tour members started thinking of another tour. It’s now official; 2020 will be Northern Germany!

Let’s begin with the itinerary for the club portion of the trip.

Our journey will start in Amsterdam where we will pick up our cars and stay for a few days to overcome jet lag and enjoy this famous city’s sights and history. Amsterdam was chosen as the starting point of this circuit tour for its direct flights from Calgary, for being a great place to visit in its own right, and for the presence of a large SIXT dealership right at the airport. SIXT is our preferred European rental company because they have guaranteed BMWs for us on the previous two European trips. We expect they will be able to do so again in Amsterdam. As we get closer to the travel date, we will collect the vehicle preferences of the participants and submit a booking order. Each participant will be responsible for paying for their own car.

Our driving route first takes us east through Hanover to stay in the quiet and pretty town of Goslar, a UNESCO World Heritage town, central to many other historical and picturesque areas. We will be stationed there for three nights to take short day trips into the surrounding countryside, visit the VW Autostadt in Wolfsburg, drop by the historical university town of Gottingen, or hike in the nearby Harz Mountains. Wernigerode, another picture-perfect, fairytale town in the Harz region, is only an hour away.

Dresden will be home for the next three nights. This city, while suffering from extensive bombing during the latter part of World War 2, has now been fully rebuilt (predominantly with British money). The former home of Saxon kings, Dresden has plenty of interesting sites that reflect the grandeur of their reign. The Fürstenzug mural (Procession of Princes), Zwinger Palace, and the Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault) are some of the notable highlights. Possible day-trips from Dresden include Leipzig to visit the Porsche and BMW factories, or east 45 minutes by car or riverboat to Bastei, the awe-inspiring rock towers in Saxon Switzerland.

Then we travel on to Berlin, capital of Germany and one of the hippest and funkiest cities in Europe. To accommodate the number of cars in our group, we plan to stay in the nearby resort town of Potsdam with its fabulous gardens and palaces.

The return leg will see us pass near the northern German coast with a chance to stop in Schwerin to visit its spectacular palace (see photo).

Our last stop before returning to Amsterdam will be at Bad Zwischenahn, a lakeside resort just 70 km from the North Sea. This will allow us to visit Papenburg, where they build some of the largest ships in the world (we will look at arranging a factory tour).

We’ve chosen these stops for a combination of driving length (each leg is about 2½ hours, the longest being 5 hours) as well as scenery and things to do. As with our previous tours, we aim to stay in interesting tourist loca-tions at average priced hotels that include breakfast and, especially, parking for our cars (which can be a challenge in the crowded, compact European towns and cities). By popular request from past trips, on 5 out of our 7 stops we will stay for several days in a central town where we can branch out to see various surrounding sights and historical venues.

All of our tours are done on a non-profit basis by volunteers. Our pre-liminary budget points to somewhere between CAD $5,800 to CAD $6,200 per car for the club portion (all hotels and the group meals, for two people), with the usual caveat that there will be either a cash call or a refund depending on final costs. We tend to overestimate the exchange rate, as this is usually the largest fluctuation. We will firm up the club budget by October. Airfare, car rental, meals (other than 4 group meals) and incidentals are not part of the group booking and are up to the individual.

While we have just started this tour, we already have several members expressing interest at our last CC&C, so expect this will be another well attended tour. These types of trips work best with a moderately sized group, so we plan to limit the number to between 10 and 15 cars. We will ask for formal non-binding expressions of interest in July 2019 and will hold a

presentation in early October when we should have most of the main items locked down. We will need commitments by the end of October 2019, with a 50% deposit. The balance will be due by May 31, 2020. Both payments are non-refundable. We would remind all that this is consistent with travel industry practise for cruises and tours and is necessary for the vol-unteer organizers to make and

pre-pay commitments. It is up to the participant to arrange trip cancellation and medical insurance or to find a replacement for their seat.

Our travel group will also be considering future trips to Spain in April 2021 and to the Canyon lands of Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico in April 2022. We may need a geologist or two as educational guides since we will be passing through literal cross sections of geological history. Stay tuned.

BMW WorldComeback on the Norisring: The BMW M1 Procar Revival

BMW Group Classic is lining up 14 legendary BMW M1 cars from the Historic Procar Series motor sport at the Nuremberg Norisring city circuit on the July 5 to 7 July 2019 weekend as the warm-up program for the German Touring Car Masters (DTM).

The Procar Series was launched for the BMW M1 some forty years ago. This racing car was produced in conformity with the Group 4 regulations prevailing at the time and Formula 1 drivers and international privateer driv-ers then competed against each other.

The mid-engined sports car was developed for racing competitions and road registration, and launched in autumn 1978. Since delays in the production process prevented homologation by the deadline, the Managing Director of BMW Motorsport GmbH at the time, Jochen Neerpasch, worked together with the Formula 1 managers Max Moseley and Bernie Ecclestone to create a completely new race series. A total of 19 races were carried in the Procar Series in the years 1979 and 1980 and this developed into an ideal forum for the subsequent success of the BMW M1 in other international competitions.

BMW Group Classic has been able to rekindle the enthusiasm of famous drivers for a return to the cockpit of the BMW M1 for the Procar Revival at the Nuremberg city racing circuit. Former Formula 1 drivers Jan Lammers from the Netherlands and Marc Surer from Switzerland are two motor-sport legends who will be lining up at the start. They were already darlings of the public in the original Procar races four decades ago.

Forty years ago, the Procar races carried out as part of the warm-up program for the European Grand Prix rounds gave private drivers and tal-ented juniors the opportunity to race against the top stars of motor sport in BMW M1 cars with technically identical engineering.

The five fastest drivers out of the Formula 1 drivers at the Friday train-ing session qualified to race in the BMW M1. Celebrity drivers like Niki Lauda, Nelson Piquet, Alan Jones, Jacques Laffite and Emerson Fittipaldi loved driving round the thrilling curves with the fast and agile mid-engined racer.

The BMW M1 generated 470 hp and the driver’s skill was the sole factor in determining who was victorious at the end of the race – this was instrumental in generating maximum excitement at every venue and it helped to make the Procar Series extremely popular.

The overall winner of the first Procar season was Niki Lauda. In the fol-lowing year, Nelson Piquet took first place in the overall standings with three wins in succession. The BMW M1 continued its motor-sport career in other competitions such as the German Automobile Racing Championship and in the American IMSA GTO Championship. As a Group 5 racing car with tur-bocharger for its inline six-cylinder engine, an output of up to 1000 hp and imposing spoilers, the car also ranked there as one of the most spectacular and successful representatives of its era.

The Procar Series remains the most important chapter in the racing history of the BMW M1 to this day. 30 years after the debut of the mid-engined sports car, a Procar Revival in 2008 attracted fans of historic motor sport to the Hockenheimring. This circuit was the showplace for a Procar Series race in 1979 and 1980 and a lot of former drivers took the opportu-nity to try their luck competing in the BMW M1 once again.

Grand Prix” at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg two years ago. The Austrian Formula 1 circuit is also among those circuits where races in the legendary Procar Series were held.

And, one of our founding BMWCSA members, Frederick Kozak, has the deep purple M1 that you may have seen as some of our events.

Unbridled Performance Button Pushing Those of us with late model BMW’s are accustomed to accommodating

our mood swings from eco-warrior to DTM driver by flipping our Chassis / Engine Configuration Button. The BMW M8 now takes this button pushing to new dimensions, unveiling a new display and control system for the configu-ration of the powertrain, chassis, driver assistance systems and now braking.

In the ultimate TRACK mode, the system returns the M8 Competition to what an M car used to be – albeit to 21st century standards!

The new more intuitive centre console Setup button for the M8 Coupe and Convertible enables direct access to all available setup options for five vehicle parameters. Pressing the button brings up a Setup menu in the Control Display, which offers an overview of the vehicle settings currently engaged. The driver can then activate the desired mode for the engine, sus-pension, steering, brakes and M xDrive – in a single step in each case – via the touchscreen or the iDrive Controller.

EFFICIENT, SPORT and SPORT PLUS settings adjust engine characteris-tics. COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT PLUS chassis options access three pro-files for the electronically controlled dampers. The driver can also choose between COMFORT and SPORT for both the M-specific electromechanical steering and the new braking system. When DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) is deactivated, the 4WD, 4WD SPORT and 2WD (for pure rear-wheel drive) settings for the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system also come into play.

The new M-specific version braking technology configures braking characteristics. The system brings together the brake activation, brake booster and braking control functions within a compact module. The system reduces weight by around two kilograms and employs a vacuum-free brake booster to enhance the car’s overall efficiency. The brake pressure required is triggered by an electric actuator, which allows it to be generated more dynamically and also ensures significantly faster and more precise interven-tions from the driving stability control system.

The integrated braking system also allows vehicle deceleration to be geared precisely to the driver’s requirements and generating sublime pedal feel in any situation. Braking feedback to the driver is unimpaired by wet road surfaces, significant lateral acceleration or high brake temperatures, and this ensures precise metering of braking power at all times. The new braking system presents the driver with two pedal feel settings.

COMFORT and SPORT modes alter the amount of pressure on the brake pedal required to slow the car. This allows the driver to choose between a comfort-oriented perception of the braking process and a par-ticularly direct, instantaneous response to applications of the pedal. The M8 teams this innovative system with both the standard M compound brakes and optional M carbon-ceramic brakes.

The eight-speed Steptronic transmission gearshift characteristics can also be adjusted using the Drivelogic button on the selector lever and the engine sound to be varied via a separate button on the centre console. M Dynamic Mode – which raises the intervention thresholds for the driving

stability control and allows controlled drifts – and DSC Off Mode, can also be initiated at the touch of a button.

If you are yet dizzy about the features thus far, the new M Mode button on the centre console will move you into a new dimension. Hit the button and you can alter the responses of the driver assistance systems and the screens in the all-digital instrument cluster and Head-Up Display.

M Mode allows the driver to activate ROAD and SPORT modes, while the new BMW M8 Competition Coupe and BMW M8 Competition Convertible also come with a TRACK setting. Changing the settings alters the information presented to the driver on the screens, while the safety-enhancing interven-tions by the driver assistance systems – such as active braking or steering inputs – are reduced to a bare minimum or deactivated altogether.

In the default ROAD setting, all the standard and optional driver assistance systems are fully activated. A simple press of the M Mode button engages the SPORT setting, in which the active driver assistance systems (in the configuration set by the driver) now only transmit alerts on speed limits and overtaking restrictions. This mode disables all interventions in the brak-ing and steering systems, aside from those made by the Collision Warning with braking function and the Evasion Assistant.

In SPORT mode, the driver benefits from M View in both the instrument cluster and the Head-Up Display. Here, only relevant information for sporty driving – i.e. an M-specific engine speed dial and the shift lights (which indicate the ideal time to change gear), a digital speed display and the gear currently engaged – is displayed. Information on coolant temperature, charge pressure, tire condition, and longitudinal and lateral acceleration can be viewed in the right- and left-hand areas of the instrument cluster. The Head-Up Display read-out is concentrated around the engine revs and shift lights, navigation instructions and distance warnings, the gear selected and the vehicle speed, plus the speed limits and overtaking restrictions detected by the Speed Limit Info system. Pressing the M Mode button again returns the driver to the default ROAD mode.

An extended press of the M Mode button engages TRACK mode, which is available in the Competition models and designed exclusively for use on race circuits. The decision to activate this mode must be confirmed using the iDrive Controller. In this setting, all the comfort and safety functions of the

driver assistance systems are deactivated. In addition, the audio system and Control Display are both switched off in order to focus the driver’s attention even more intently.

TRACK mode allows M8 Competition drivers to experience an ultra-pure, racing-car-inspired M feeling. Added to which, the instrument cluster and Head-Up Display also include M View, although TRACK mode blanks out the road sign detection and distance information. Pressing the M Mode but-ton again takes the car out of the TRACK setting and back into ROAD mode.

The feeling of an M car is unmistakable – and now it can be tailored even more closely to the individual.

MotorSportReg Acquired by Hagerty InsuranceHagerty recently acquired MotorsportReg.com, a registration platform

for automotive gatherings and driving events that many BMW members are intimately familiar with. The specialty car insurer is currently in the midst of transforming itself into an automotive lifestyle brand. We have used MotorSportReg for our Winter Driving School and other school registrations.

MotorSportReg was founded in 2003 in the San Francisco Bay Area and has an historic relationship with the BMW CCA It was originated within the Golden Gate BMW Chapter (largest in U.S.) as a way to better organize events like track days and autocross. Mishimoto headquarters and engineering facility encompass two buildings comprising over 50,000 square feet of workspace in New Castle, Delaware. Most of that space is taken up by a new engineering facility that houses all of their cars, dynos, lifts and tools that they use to develop our products. Across the street from our engineering facility is a building that houses their corporate offices, customer service, and video studio.

Their production team is automotive diversity on steroids - engineers, project managers, and journalists but more importantly automotive enthusi-asts with a variety of rides. Their philosophy revolves around fitment, qual-ity, and performance. They usually start with a stock part and then see how much performance they can add while still fitting into the vehicle.

As you would expect, they have the usual automotive and machine shop tools. However, what makes their designs outstanding is the use of not just 3D printing but also 3D scanning:

Mishimoto has four 3D printers. Three are MakerBot Replicator Z18s, and one is a Stratasys uPrint. These are used for variety of jobs including printing prototype induction hoses, MAF housings, intercooler end tanks, catch-can brackets and full-sized models of parts such as washer fluid reservoirs. One major difference between the MakerBots and the uPrint is the uPrint’s ability to print soluble material. This is especially helpful for prototypes that require undercuts or complicated geometry.

On the subject of 3D, Mishimoto’s newest additions are the FARO Design ScanArm and its little brother, the HEXAGON ROMER Stinger IIi. The FARO Design ScanArm is a techie’s dream, a 3D laser scanner capable of mapping an object’s surface 280 times per second. The FARO scanner has completely revolutionized the way they test fit prototypes. It allows creating a 3D model of a vehicle’s engine bay, bumper, or stock component mounting points. If it can be seen – it can be modeled. The 3D models allow test fitting prototype models before they’re even made, saving massive amounts of time and lowering product costs.

The FARO Design ScanArm’s little brother (even though it’s actually a bit older) is the HEXAGON ROMER Stinger IIi. The ROMER arm serves a similar purpose to the FARO scanner. It allows making 3D models of various vehicle parts in order to create prototype models. Go to the Mishimoto site for even more car nerd design stuff!

Real world. Hands on!The Tire Rack Street Survival School

starts where traditional “parallel parking” driver education programs leave off.

Rather than studying driver’s manual theory, the primary emphasis of the pro-gram is a “hands on” driving experience with in car skills development in a very safe, purpose built, closely supervised training environment.

When your teen driver, or those with less than 10 years of driving experience, attends a Street Survival school, they learn to control their own car in dynamic exer-cises that can’t be learned from books or games. They experience the physics of motion in exactly the types of situation that can cause a loss of control! They learn how to make good driving decisions and react more quickly. They become more aware of their own limits and learn to begin antici-pating the actions of other drivers.

How important is it that new drivers learn Street Survival skills? Consider these facts:

• Stats Canada reports that motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death among drivers in their first 10 years of driving.

• They account for over 70 percent of accidental deaths in that age group.

• A 16-year-old is 20 percent more likely to be killed in a crash than an adult.

• Nearly 50 percent of teen-driver fatality accidents involve a single vehicle!

The School is held at the Calgary Police Service Training Grounds. Cost is $125 including EventBrite fees for a full day of training, lunch and refreshments.

TRSS is a program developed to train newer drivers who have up to ten years of driving experience, with preference given to the 16 to 21 age group. The event is designed to equip the next generation of drivers with real-world, behind-the-wheel skills that will help to keep them safely on the road. The program includes instruc-tion by experienced driving instructors, in the classroom and one-on-one with each student while they learn and practise emergency braking, accident avoidance, proactive vision, car placement, and car control on slippery surfaces. Students will also get help with how to sit properly in

their car and how to adjust mirrors for maximum visibility; they will see an actual truck blind-spot demonstration, and more.

Parents are encouraged (but not required) to spend the day with their student. Students bring the vehicle that they normally use and, as a result, learn and understand the response characteristics of their individual car.

BMW pranks Daimler CEO Zetsche on his retirement

Daimler AG CEO Dieter Zetsche stepped down in May — and then, apparently, stepped into a BMW. In a clip distributed on BMW Twitter feed, a camera follows a Zetsche look-alike — complete with signature walrus moustache and rimless spectacles — around on his last day at

work: there’s Zetsche hand-ing in his work badge at the front desk, bidding farewell to employees in the lobby with a few self-ies, before being whisked back home by a chauf-feured black Mercedes-benz S- Class sedan. After the car drops him off and leaves, Zetsche sneaks into the double garage, only to emerge at the wheel of a

flaming-orange open-top BMW i8 sports car to roar off his compound. The caption: Free at Last. The clip ends with a note of gratitude, saying “Thank you, Dieter Zetsche, for so many years of inspiring competition.”
