way the medical community thought about

behavior

Most of Freud’s theories are untestable,

but still influence certain aspects of

research on the mind

ID, EGO & SUPEREGO

Mind comprised of three systems

that work against one another

Some consciously and some

unconsciously

ID

Unconscious

Demands immediate satisfaction

Pleasure principle

Operates outside of logic, reality and

consequences

EGO

Mediates the unrealistic id and the

outside world

Operates on reason and logic

Works out realistic ways to satisfy the

id

SUPEREGO

Conscience

Part of mind that pays attention to

rules of society and what feels right or

wrong

Responsible for guilt and shame

Opposes the id
