Fresh October

October is the beginning of the 'winter vegeta-

ble season', new season root crops such as Pars-

nips, Carrots, Swede and Turnips are young, ten-

der and full of flavour. This month will see a

change in the Country origin of most salad items,

as English and Dutch produce will be replaced

by French and Spanish. The quality may be vari-

able and the prices will fluctuate during the

cross-over, but be assured that Country Fare will

get you the best daily deals in the Markets.

When one seasonal door closes, plenty more

open: Figs, Dates, Local Potatoes, Squash &

Pumpkins, Kale and Sprouts are now available,

you’ll soon be in the mood for Winter!

This Month

October –Time for Change

H- alloween Pumpkins

Local Grown

Cavolo Nero

The abundance of Local and English fruit begins

to decrease over the next few months, its time to

consider imported and exotic fruit options. Span-

ish Peaches and Nectarines have now ended,

there are some pockets of availability, but the

quality is not good, the next stone fruit available

will be Cape Produce from South Africa; in No-

vember/December. English Plums and Green-

gages are now finished. South African Lemons

are drawing to the end of the season, we will be

switching to the Spanish supply. Lemon prices

have been consistently high for the past 3 years,

European supply will ease the price but we are

not expecting cheap prices this season.

New Forest Strawberries will be available all

month, due to the cooler weather, production is

down and will now be supplied in 227g punnets.

English Blueberries and Blackberries have finished

and will be replaced with European imports for a

short while, ending up with produce from Peru

and Mexico. Our

superb English

Raspberries pro-

duced will finish

this month and

will be replaced

with Spanish pro-

duce, which

tends to be very

average.

The Easy Peeling

Minneola will be replaced with Spanish Satsumas

during October. Apples available in October:

French Braeburn, Royal Gala, Golden Delicious

and Granny Smiths alongside English varieties like

Cox, Lambourne, Russets and Spartans.

The Dutch salad season will be coming to an end

and we will be switching over to Spanish and

French produce. Be prepared for variable quality

and a fluctuation in prices. Micro Herbs are avail-

able, please call telesales to place your orders.

Tomatoes and Cucumbers have been expensive

over the last few weeks.

Local Dorset Red watercress will return this month,

the cool night s and reduced light levels will en-

hance the purple

colour in the leaf.

Fennel and White

Chicory are great

salad option for

this time of year.

Some of our local

herbs may be

replaced by im-

ported products

as the cooler weather slows the growing process.

Fruit & Salad All root vegetables are seasonally good at this

time of the year, a must for any Autumn menu.

Besides the traditional favourites like Swede and

Parsnip; don’t forget the often neglected roots

like; Turnip, Salsify, Jerusalem Artichoke and Ce-

leriac

English Cauliflower and Broccoli have been very

good lately. Local Greens: Dorset Kale, Savoy

and Primo Cabbage or New Forest Rainbow

Chard, Cavolo Nero and Purple Kale will put an

Autumnal flavour on any menu. For something

new try the New Forest Buttonhole Kale grown

locally, this will start mid October and be availa-

ble for around 4

weeks. Winter

Sprouts are all

plentiful. Loose

English Golden

and Candy Beet-

root have started.

Spout Tops are a fantastic winter green that will

suit any seasonal menu. Mixed Chantennay Car-

rots and Piccolo Parsnip are now available. Vi-

telotte, Pink Fir and Ratte Potatoes are now avail-

able. This is now the time of year for Local Mixed

Wild Mushrooms,

sold in 1kg boxes.

Polish Chanterelle,

Trumpettes and

Portuguese Gi-

rolles.

Most of our local

squashes start in Octo-

ber and will be availa-

ble until mid Decem-

ber. Please do consider these for your Autumn

menus. Local squashed include

• Gem Squash (only 5 week season) - small

green squash. Ideal for filling. Has a loose

yellow flesh, similar to spaghetti squash.

• Kabocha Squash -medium size, dense or-

ange flesh with a green skin.

• Crown Prince Squash - Blue grey skin with a

flesh similar to Butternut.

• Acorn Squash - green skin with a sweet yel-

low/orange flesh.

• Onion Squash - Small, orange skin and flesh.

• Spaghetti squash - large yellow squash with

a stringy flesh that can resemble spaghetti.
