Frequently Asked Questions about ECON 201 Course Grades Q: May I review my mistakes on the final exam? A: The first two midterms in this class are learning experiences. We go over them in detail so you may learn about economics by understanding what you did wrong. The final exam is a testing exercise. It is not designed to be a learning tool like the midterms. As Mr. Elzinga announced at the last lecture, we do not go over final exams. Q: Do I need to request that I be graded on the fi nal exam alone? A: By virtue of the "Dutch knockout" each student was automatically given the higher of:

1) his/her grade on the scale for the final exam or 2) his/her grade on the cumulative scale for all his/her work

done in the course. Q: Are the grades “curved”? A: To say grades are curved or not is to imply there was an original scale from which to deviate. Since there is no preconceived grading scale in ECON 201 until all exams have been taken, there is no curve in the strict sense of the word. However, both posted scales are more generous than a high school/ straight scale. Q: I am only one point away from the next highest grade. Can my grade be “bumped up” or is there an extra credit op portunity? A: In a class of this size, there are literally dozens of students who are just one point away from a letter grade change. This is inevitable and would happen regardless of where we set the letter grade bounds. The posted scale is final. There are no opportunities for additional points on your total grade. The College does not permit the changing of a grade unless there has been a clerical error. Q: What should I do if my TA made an error in ente ring my scores? A: If you believe your TA incorrectly entered a score for you, and it affected your letter grade up or down, please contact the Head TA, Miss Hastedt at [email protected].

Econ 201 Fall 2006 Grading Scale Mr. Elzinga / Miss Hastedt

Note: The first column is based on a 200-point scale (final exam performance only); the third column is based on a 400-point scale (using all exam grades and TA points). The numbers presented are lower bounds. For example, a final exam score between 165-169 would yield a grade of B+.
