Both have gone on since their last run and they’re both at their peak. The Conqueror probably has more quality but the old bloke (Quichang), what he lacks in ability makes up for in heart,’’ Pepper said. Hopes rest on Abbey’s maggots MAGGOT therapy is helping St Nicholas Abbey get the better of the life-threatening disease laminitis. Tom O’Brien, the surgeon at Ireland’s Fethard Equine Hospital, said the Coolmore stallion was showing signs of recovery. The Racing Post reported the six- time Group One winner’s improvement had been marked since the introduction of maggots. ‘‘We used maggot therapy, so we got medical grade maggots and enclosed them in the foot cast,’’ O’Brien said. Athos trainer merry-go-round MELBOURNE Cup placegetter Mount Athos has been switched from trainer Luca Cumani to Marco Botti who will prepare him for the upcoming Dubai carnival. Mount Athos was originally trained by David Wachman in Ireland and joined Cumani in 2012. He finished an unlucky fifth in the 2012 Melbourne Cup and third last year. His last race for Cumani was his ninth in the Hong Kong Vase in December. Botti’s Jakkalberry ran third in the 2012 Melbourne Cup. French force ready for Aussie account CHRIS Waller saw enough in Brigantin’s first start for the stable to be optimis- tic the former French horse can be a force in the Gosford Cup. The seven-year-old made an eye-catching run for fifth after being block- ed for a run late in a 1550m race at Canterbury on Dec- ember 28, won by rising star Messene. He steps up to 2100m in Friday’s Listed event at his second start off a nine- week break after a spring campaign under Victorian trainer Pat Carey. ‘‘He ran really well first- up,’’ Waller said. ‘‘The 1550m race was a pipe-opener,’’ he said. ‘‘He came to us pretty forward from Pat Carey so fitness is not a concern. I think he can go well.’’ Waller will also have Summer Cup winner I’m Imposing in the Gosford feature. I’m Imposing was off the track for almost two years with injury and his win in the Listed 2000m Boxing Day feature at Randwick was his first in seven starts for Waller. Formerly trained in England by Sir Michael Stoute, I’m Imposing joined the Lloyd Williams team in 2010. Brigantin remained in Australia after he failed to make the 2012 Melbourne Cup field when third in the Geelong Cup. Andre Fabre trained Brigantin for Team Valor International in France, where he won five races, including the 2011 Group 2 Vigier Stakes, in which he edged out Dunaden, who won the Melbourne Cup a few months later. A pastern injury after the Geelong Cup kept Brigantin off the scene for almost a year and he was unplaced in a four- start spring campaign in Victoria. Brigantin is raced by Team Valor International, which has its head- quarters in Kentucky and buys horses to race in the US and internationally. Last year they sold a majority share in Dubai World Cup-winner Animal Kingdom to John Mes- sara’s Arrowfield Stud. Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley bought into Animal Kingdom and he will stand the northern hemisphere season at his Jonabell Farm in Kentucky. Tony Vasil aims to get Prince Harada’s winning ways back on track as the trainer pursues the Australian Guineas Picture: GETTY IMAGES Vasil faith in Magic Bowler Gold Coast-bound, Harada builds for Guineas HORSE RACING TONY Vasil has mapped out stable star Prince Harada’s path to the Group 1 Austral- ian Guineas but a more im- mediate focus for the trainer is a $1 million target for stablemate The Bowler. Vasil is aiming Prince Harada at the $500,000 Aust- ralian Guineas (1600m) third- up on March 1 at Flemington ahead of a Sydney campaign. The Bowler, meanwhile, is being readied for Saturday’s $1 million Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast and is due to leave Mel- bourne by float tonight pro- viding he makes the final field as Vasil expects. Acceptances for the Guin- eas are taken today and Vasil said the trip from Melbourne would be broken with a sto- pover in Sydney. The Bowler had his lead-up to the Magic Millions at Moonee Valley last Saturday week but had his chances ruined when Jye McNeil’s saddle shifted near the 800m point of the 1200m race. He finished fifth to the Peter Moody-trained Brother- ly Secret and Vasil said the three-year-old had come through the race well. ‘‘He’s taken no harm from the run. He has had heaps of tutoring going right-handed and he’s had no issues with that so I’ve got no doubt about him going right-handed.’’ Vasil thought it was essen- tial to have a left-handed whip rider for The Bowler and has booked Craig Newitt. Prince Harada, meanwhile, is scheduled to have a jump- out at Caulfield tomorrow as his preparations for a return in the Group 3 Manfred Sta- kes (1200m) on February 1 ramp up. Vasil said Prince Harada was likely to have two jump- outs before the Manfred Sta- kes at Caulfield and then go to the Group 3 C S Hayes Stakes (1400m) second-up at Fleming- ton on February 15. Two weeks later is the Australian Guineas (1600m). ‘‘That being his third run, he’ll still have plenty of juice in the tank to go to Sydney,’’ Vasil said. Prince Harada was one of the boom three-year-olds heading into the spring but finished out of the placings in the Group 1 Golden Rose and Caulfield Guineas. Invisible to make presence felt in MM INVISIBLE’S co-trainer, Michael Hawkes, agrees Unencumbered is the deserved favourite for the Magic Millions Classic but also believes he is there to be beaten. The Bjorn Baker-trained Unen- cumbered is the best performed youngster in Saturday’s $2 million race for two-year-olds at the Gold Coast, with four wins from five starts. Invisible is the second favourite ahead of tomorrow’s crucial barrier draw, based on his recent debut win at Canterbury. The colt will have his final pre- race gallop at Rosehill tomorrow and travel north two days later, avoiding the current heat wave in Queensland. ‘‘Unencumbered has the score on the board and he is the one to beat,’’ Hawkes said. ‘‘But Invisible deserves his tick- et,’’ he said. ‘‘He is nice and fresh and it is an open race . . . One thing he has in his favour is that he won at Canter- bury, which should help him on the tight Gold Coast track.’’ Gai stays but Waller a Star of the future LEADING syndication company Star Thoroughbreds has announced a change in direction with Chris Wal- ler to be the trainer of all yearlings bought this year.
