Portcentric logistics is about importing goodsthrough ports located closer to the finalcustomer, whilst also locating distributioncentres closer to the port. This brings thesuppliers closer to the markets they serveand can reduce the annual truck milesacross the UK by tens of millions each year.

By unpacking, storing and picking goods at theport for onward delivery to stores, those companiesusing portcentric logistics bring direct benefits totheir supply chain at multiple levels. The environmentalfootprint of the whole chain is reduced by eliminatingroad miles from southern ports to distributioncentres based in the midlands and the north.

Teesport’s list of portcentric activities grows each year, both in terms of the number of distribution facilitiesand the range of services available to retailers.

Asda and Tesco both operate from distribution centreson the Teesport estate. Tesco’s 1.2 million sq ft

warehouse is one of the largest distribution centresin Europe, and Teesport was the only port thatcould meet their requirements for a distributioncentre of this size.

Argos part of Home Retail Group opened itsFaverdale distribution centre in Darlington in2005. The 737,000 sq ft warehouse wasestablished following a review of the company’snorthern bound container shipments. Takingadvantage of Teesports portcentric solution andthe excellent access to national road networkshas reduced Argos’ transportation costs andbrought about a number of long termcommercial and environmental benefits.

Other major operators include Taylors ofHarrogate, Barker and Stonehouse and ClipperLogistics, whose 840,000 sq ft warehouse atWynyard consolidated the Asda George importsinto one facility, allowing them to handle morethan 3 million items of clothing per week.

Clipper secured a ground breaking 10-yeardeal with Asda to provide portcentric solutionsfor the George Clothing business, as its firstcustomer for the facility. The bespoke solutionfor the retailer included the installation of athree-tier hanging garment mezzanine andhanging conveyors, with the contractrequiring over 600,000 sq ft at go-live.

As well as providing Asda George with theirbespoke solution, the facility offers other

retailers the opportunity to take advantage ofportcentric best practice through a shared-user proposition, without the need for majorcapital investment. Other contracts servicedfrom the Wynyard site include worldwidewarehouse and distribution services forpremium luggage brand, Antler, and abespoke green consolidation solution forNewcastle University.
