Definitions for column headersDefinitions for Refrigerator and
Freezer product listing column headersBrand and ModelThis is how a
particular refrigerator is identified. Retailers identify products
they stock using the brand and model number. Some products may also
be identified with a name or SKU, which is different from the brand
or model number.
Model numbers often contain wildcard characters, such as *, #,
and X, that are placeholders for non-energy attributes, such as
color.Total Volume (ft3)This is the interior volume of the
refrigerator. It is the total volume of both the refrigerator and
freezer compartments.Adjusted Volume (ft3)This is a figure
accounting for the fact that freezers require more energy than
refrigerators per unit of actual volume, because they are
colder.
The adjusted volume is the sum of the fresh food compartment
volume and the product of an adjustment factor and t he net freezer
compartment volume in cubic feet. It's used to determine the
federal energy conservation standards for refrigerators and
freezers. Refrigerator Adjusted Volume = Fresh Volume + (1.63 x
Freezer Volume). Freezer Adjusted Volume = 1.73 x Freezer
Volume.ConfigurationThis shows the configuration of the
refrigerator. The basic types are:
* TF: Top Freezer * BF: Bottom Freezer * SS: Side-by-Side * SD:
Refrigerator only - single door * SR: Refrigerator/Freezer - single
door * UF: Upright Freezer * CF: Chest FreezerDefrost TypeThis is
the type of defrost function. Automatic, manual, and partial
automatic are the standard defrost types.CompactDesignation for
refrigerators, refrigerator-freezers, and freezers with a total
volume of less than 7.75 cubic feet and 36 inches or less in
height.Through the Door Ice ServiceIndicates if the model has the
through-the-door ice feature. It does not indicate whether or not
the model has an ice maker. Please contact the manufacturer
directly to determine if the model has an ice maker.Annual Energy
Use (kWh/year)This number is the estimated annual energy use in
kilowatt hours of the refrigerator or freezer under typical
conditions. Your actual energy consumption will vary depending on
how you use your refrigerator, such as frequency of opening and
closing, surrounding room temperature, and how full the unit is
kept. This figure is calculated according to U.S. Department of
Energy test procedures.Federal Standard (kWh/year)This column shows
the maximum energy consumption in kWh/year allowed for a
refrigerator or freezer of that particular volume and configuration
based on the Federal standard. The National Appliance Energy
Conservation Act (NAECA) dictates the Federal standards for energy
consumption in refrigerators and freezers. The energy consumption
standards vary depending on the size and configuration of the
refrigerator.% Better than Federal StandardThis column shows how
much less energy the model uses compared to the 2001 NAECA
(Federal) standard.
ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators must use at least 20% less
energy than the Federal standard requirements.

time.
On January 1, 2004, the ENERGY STAR criteria for refrigerators
changed to require all full-size models to be at least 15% above
the minimum federal standard to qualify for ENERGY STAR. Please
note, the ENERGY STAR criteria for full-sized freezers and compact
refrigerators and freezers did not change at this time.
On January 1, 2003, the ENERGY STAR criteria for refrigerators
expanded to include all sizes and configurations of refrigerators
and freezers.
* All refrigerators and freezers 7.75 cubic feet or greater in
volume must be at least 10% above the minimum federal standard to
qualify for ENERGY STAR. * All refrigerators and freezers less than
7.75 cubic feet in volume and 36 inches or less in height had to be
at least 20% above the minimum federal standard to qualify for
ENERGY STAR.
This expansion allowed the qualification of the previously
ineligible products in the following categories:
* Chest freezers * Upright freezers * Manual defrost freezers
and refrigerators * Partial automatic defrost refrigerators *
Single door refrigerators * Compact refrigerators and
freezersFederal Standards (NAECA)The National Appliance Energy
Conservation Act (NAECA) dictates minimum standards for energy
consumption in refrigerators and freezers. The standard varies
depending on the size and configuration of the refrigerator or
freezer.
Refrigerators and freezers are categorized by:
* Configuration (side-by-side, top freezer, bottom freezer,
single door refrigerator and freezer, single door refrigerator
only, chest freezer, and upright freezer) * Automatic or manual
defrost * For refrigerators, whether or not they have
through-the-door ice service
Adjusted Volume (AV) for refrigerators is calculated as follows:
AV = (Fresh Volume) + 1.63 x (Freezer Volume).
For freezers, the adjustment factor is 1.73 so the calculation
is: AV = 1.73 x Freezer Volume.
Fresh Volume is the total volume of the main refrigerator
compartment.
Freezer Volume is the total volume of the freezer
compartment.You may still find refrigerator and freezer models
designated as ENERGY STAR at retail that met the previous ENERGY
STAR criteria for an extended period of time. If you have recently
purchased one of these models, even though these models do not meet
the current ENERGY STAR criteria for refrigerators and freezers,
you can be confident that the product is highly efficient.
In addition, some of the ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators and
freezers displayed on the Web site were recently introduced into
the market and may not be available for purchase in certain
areas.
