STATION COMMANDER'S FOREWORD MARHAM MATTERS

Station Commander’s Foreword

From the Editor

Deadline for Next Issue: Please submit all entries for the next issue by 6th March 2019.

By the time you read this foreword the Tornado Force will be entering it’s final month. As I type the preparations for flypasts across the country are almost finished. People across the country are contacting us on a daily basis to find out more about how they can view a Tornado before the retirement date. The disbandment parades of IX(B) Squadron and 31 Squadron are just around the corner and the final planned sortie will be advertised to the Station shortly. I hope you all take a moment to watch her fly over, we are certainly going to miss her when she has gone.

The Families and Friends Day planning has started and you will find a small ‘save the date’ note within this edition. Tickets will be available for station personnel and their families nearer the date, please note this is a private event, not open to the general public. Last year’s event was brilliant, we are all looking forward to it, but hopeful that it is a little cooler this year! Please keep sending in your stories, it’s great to see what everyone is getting up to. If you have anything else you would like to see covered in Marham Matters please drop me an email.

Plenty to reflect on as we have started 2019 at pace with RAF Marham continuing to transform.  January saw our Station host our 4th Royal visit in a 12-month period with HRH The Duke of York reviewing F35B Lightning and we also hosted a major event attended by the Secretary of State for Defence.  The UK has declared its Lightning Force as having achieved an Initial Operating Capability and, whilst there is plenty to do to ‘deepen’ this initial capability, it is clear to me that the whole Station is steadily increasing its ability to generate Next Generation Combat Air Power.  As we focus on the generation of aircraft for local sorties, the Station is preparing for a training deployment in the Spring and for our first embarkation on HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH in the late autumn.  We are already seeing personnel from 207 Squadron starting to arrive with the main body of the Squadron due to arrive in mid-July. Whilst the Lightning Force capability builds, it only right that our attention in the early part of 2019 focuses on our superb Tornado Force.  Having flown their final Operation SHADER mission on 31 January 19, it was an emotional

return to Marham when the final 3 aircraft landed on Tues 5 February.  The Tornado Force is a family and it was entirely appropriate to see our families welcome back their loved ones from their final Tornado overseas deployment.  It was also appropriate for the whole Station to welcome back the Force as Marham has been an integral part of Tornado Force success for 37 years.  As I write, we still have the final tranche of 31 Squadron engineers preparing to leave Akrotiri and, whilst our engineers and support staff may not get the grandstand welcome home, their contribution is as important as the aircrews who flew back this week.  Our celebrations will continue with a series of FINale Flypasts planned to overfly locations associated with the Tornado, a Hangar Party on 28 February and the Disbandment Parade and Dinner on 14 March. Whilst we must rightly celebrate the imminent retirement of Tornado, we must remain focused on ensuring we retain an operational capability until 31 March 2019.   Cab TownsendStation Commander, RAF Marham.

31 SQN UPDATE

MARHAM MATTERS 31 SQN UPDATE

The squadrons’ primary role has been to prepare for operations in support of Op SHADER.  Both IX and 31 Sqn have been collaborating to ensure that all aircrew receive enough training in the UK for their upcoming deployments.  To do this, the aircrew will prepare various scenarios that enable them to utilise the full extent of Tornado capabilities.   The simulator is also utilised frequently, particularly ahead of the Christmas break.  With the station undergoing an extended Christmas break, it was vital for the aircrew to keep various flying currencies up to date, in order

for them to fly in the new year without additional check-rides.  Pleasingly it was the time of year again when  the last 5 minutes of the simulator event can involve a “wacky race”, where a crew has to achieve several goals in the fastest possible time whilst defending themselves from simulated threats.  All the times were logged, with everyone desperate to get the fastest time and avoid any embarrassing mistakes in their rush to complete the task.  The crews all donated £5 per attempt to charity, meaning the competitiveness is beneficial for a good cause!

The last ever Tornado pilot to arrive on the front line, Flt Lt Nathan Shawyer, has recently completed his “Pairs Lead” work-up.  To achieve this qualification several sorties were assessed by senior operators on the squadron.  Two of those sorties were dedicated to Close Air Support, with one of these performed at night.  In addition to this, a further sortie was dedicated to evading a fighter threat in order to reach a pre-determined objective.  Often for this form of training, the other fighter will be a Hawk T1 of 100 Sqn, based at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire.  When the

opportunity arises, the subject will also lead a pair of Tornados to an RAF Voyager to conduct air-to-air refuelling.  Also assessed was the ability to supervise a formation by setting a scenario for a sortie, setting objectives, and debriefing another aircrew member on their performance.  Finally, a senior operator will set a final check-ride which can assess any aspect of leadership that the pilot is qualified for.   Flt Lt Shawyer completed the work up with a strong performance despite his slight stature and he’ll be able to consolidate his qualification in the final months of Tornado flying.

The winter season is always a busy time for the Goldstars, with plenty of work and various social events.

31 SQN UPDATE MARHAM MATTERS

Despite the Tornado GR4 era imminently coming to an end, the engineers and aircrew of 31 Sqn have been kept busy over the New Year period. The Pilots and Weapons System Officers have been utilising the Sim to maintain their currencies and skills, whilst the engineers have been beavering away to keep the jets in good health for the last few remaining months.  Several of the Officer cadre have also left the Sqn in the past 12 months on promotion. Flt Lt Steve Smith departed the Squadron in the Autumn to begin his training as a Hawk T2 QFI at RAF Valley on the Advanced Jet Training course. Since then he has promoted to Sqn Ldr to take up the role of Fixed Wing Requirements Manager (T2 Hawk and Texan).   Sqn Ldr Guy Gibbons was also promoted during the Autumn after completing his tour on the Sqn. He is now gainfully employed at RAF High Wycombe in his role as a staff officer in the Joint Forward Air Component Command Centre.  Finally, our American exchange Officer Major Paul Doran finished his 3-year spell in the UK piloting the mighty GR4. He returns to fly

the A10 in the state of Baltimore and has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.  Everyone at 31 Sqn wish him and his family the best of luck for the future.

Despite the constant training for

Operations, the Squadron is also busy preparing for disbandment events. 31 Sqn itself will disband in March, but will be stood back up again (date TBC), when it will reform at RAF Waddington equipped with the Remotely

Piloted Air System (RPAS) MQ-9B, also known as the Protector RG1. In the meantime, the end of the Tornado GR4 means that the final flypasts, parades and social events will keep everyone on their toes until the end of March.

MARHAM MATTERS 207 SQN

The new year has got off to a fast-paced start here in South Carolina with 207 Sqn, side-by-side with the US Marine

Corps’ VMFAT-501, conducting multiple Suppression of Enemy Air Defence

(SEAD) training flights on the Electronic Warfare ranges in the US south-east.

207 SQN

The SEAD capability, unique to the F-35 within the Royal Air Force, is an important and growing mission set. Indeed, Flt Lt Joe Rigg has become the SEAD Stage Head Instructor on the F-35B here in the US and recently graduated another SEAD Instructor, our very own OC 207 Sqn!

Those 2 were once again joined at the hip later in the month on a visit to the Beaufort Rotary Club. With no less than 8 retired Flag Officers in the audience, they gave a presentation on the F-35, the RAF in the USA and our interaction with the local community. In scenes reminiscent of Dragon’s Den, they subsequently survived an intense question and answer session from the impressive array of local businessmen, retired military pilots and dignitaries.

Sadly, by February we bade farewell to Lt Cdr Nick “Frenchie” Smith RN. Frenchie has been a stalwart of the instructor cadre, using his extensive USN F-18 experience to teach

across all F-35 mission sets. He has been instrumental in the development of the UK training syllabi, a time-consuming and often thankless task. His contribution to Flight Safety on 207 has been outstanding and his performance in this regard meant he was an obvious candidate to participate in the post-crash management and investigation when the USMC lost an F-35B last year.  We wish him well as he begins his transition to the four-legged mahogany bomber in LFHQ.

With temperatures back in the 20s following this cool winter (jackets were seen out of closets) we continue to look forward and prepare for our return to the UK. Gp Capt Beck, our future station commander, arrives shortly and will be our last UK student to train in the US. Planning for our return is fully underway and whilst it is with a heavy heart that we say thank you and farewell to the Tornado Force, we hope to follow as successfully in their footsteps.

IX SQN MARHAM MATTERS

Shortly after the start of the Second World War, on 18 December 1939, the RAF sent a combined force of 24 Wellington bombers in daylight, to engage German ships in the Heligoland Bight, to sink or damage as many as possible. The Wellingtons came from IX(B) Squadron at RAF Honington, 37 Squadron at RAF Feltwell and 149 Squadron at RAF Mildenhall. In an engagement that lasted less than an hour, 12 RAF aircraft and 57 airmen were lost. The Luftwaffe lost 2 airmen. The Heligoland39 Project was launched in March 2018 to bring together the living relatives of the 129 RAF airmen who participated in the Battle of Heligoland Bight, which was the first named air battle of the Second World War and informed RAF Bomber Command's decision to switch from daylight raids to night-time operations.A ceremony was held in Ely Cathedral on 18 December 2018 to mark the start of the 80th anniversary year and was supported heavily by the two local RAF bases. Over 250 people attended the Service, which started with a 'five-minute bell' ringing and the sound of a Wellington Bomber returning from a mission. A Morse code message was then heard: "welcome to Ely this day - the beginning of the 80th anniversary year of The Battle of Heligoland

Bight 1939." Then, a cameo performance by local RAF holding personnel, who were dressed as a 1939 Wellington crew, as they emerged out of the mist of the Choir area, looking dishevelled, tired and shocked as they walked silently past the gathered relatives. The event was organised by Mr Jack Waterfall, and his RAF liaison was Sqn Ldr (Retd) Dicky James.59 candles had been lit around the central Octagon and 59 discs were placed next to them by relatives of each individual, with RAF personnel standing in where no relative could be traced. Taking part were fifteen personnel from IX(B) Squadron and three from RAF Honington, including a Luftwaffe exchange officer who laid a disc for one of the two Me109 pilots killed. At the end of the service, the 59 Remembrance Discs were retrieved and taken to the Lady Chapel to form the Heligoland39 Project Memorial Cluster, which was displayed in the Cathedral until the end of the year. The end of the 80th anniversary year will be marked with a further ceremony at the Air Forces Memorial, Runnymede, and a major event at Brooklands Museum, site of the Vickers factory at which Wellingtons were built. Although IX(B) Squadron will by then have moved to RAF Lossiemouth, it is hoped that the Squadron will once again be represented.

MARHAM MATTERS THE END OF AN ERA

THE END OF AN ERA

TORNADO RETURNS FROM OPERATIONS FOR THE LAST TIME

On 4 and 5 February eight Tornado aircraft returned to RAF Marham from operations for the final time. The Tornados had been deployed to RAF

Akrotiri on Operation Shader since the summer of 2014.

Page 17: FREEDOM OF KING’S LYNN PARADE€¦ · Issue 1 2019 £Free The official publication of Royal Air Force Marham FREEDOM OF KING’S LYNN PARADE Inside this Issue: 207 Sqn • Final

THE END OF AN ERA MARHAM MATTERS

www.marhammattersonline.co.uk ISSUE 1 2019 MARHAM MATTERS 17

But this was the end of almost three decades of Operational deployment for the aircraft. Since taking part in the Gulf War in 1991 Tornados have been on almost continuous Operations, mostly in the Middle East but also in Kosovo and Afghanistan. Monday’s arrival of five aircraft was a rather low key affair with the families of the crews coming to meet them at the HAS site, but Tuesday’s was a much larger event with the whole Station invited along to greet them at the VAP, which was watched by an invited group of local and national media. The plan was to have all three aircraft pull in to the VAP, the media would watch as the crews were greeted by DCom Ops, AOC 1Gp and the Station Commander, then the families would run in to greet their loved ones. This was all going great until a very short time before their arrival when an issue with one of the aircraft would mean that only two aircraft would park in front of the waiting crowd and OC IX(B) Sqn and OC 31 Sqn would get to greet their loved ones from the not quite as glamorous MT minibus!  This did not detract from the event at all, and images of OC IX(B) Sqn and his wife hugging with a Tornado (not his Tornado) in the background made the front page of The Daily Telegraph!  It is only a matter of weeks now until the Tornado retires, and by the time you are reading this many more events will have taken place to celebrate Tornado that we will show you in the next edition. Our sincere congratulations to all on the Tornado Force for ensuring all eight aircraft completed their time on deployed operations successfully and also made it home to RAF Marham on time. Some of the kind words said about Tornado as they returned home are as follows: DEFENCE SECRETARY GAVIN WILLIAMSON SAID:

“It is with a heavy heart, but enormous pride, that we bid farewell to the Tornado from operations. This truly is the end of an era, having played a vital role in keeping Britain and its allies safe for four decades.  “But, after so long in service, it is only right that we now look to the future. The combination of our state-of-the art F35s and the Typhoon’s new weapon systems will keep us as a world leader in air combat for a generation.”

CHIEF OF THE AIR STAFF, AIR CHIEF MARSHAL SIR STEPHEN HILLIER SAID: “My sincerest congratulations to the Tornado Force, returning home after more than 4 years of continuous commitment to defeating Daesh in Iraq and Syria - an exceptional effort from everyone, well done and thank you.  “As a Tornado GR4 pilot myself, I have seen the aircraft develop over its nearly 40 years of service into an outstanding combat aircraft, flown, maintained and supported by similarly outstanding air and groundcrew.  The Tornado Force has been continuously deployed on operations since 1990, serving with immense distinction in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Libya and the Balkans.   “I will personally be very sad to see the Tornado retire, but it is time now to pass the baton to our next generation combat aircraft.  The F-35B Lightning is now operational and the Typhoon is now fully multi-role capable and able to take on the Tornado’s missions.

“We can all take immense pride in what the Tornado has achieved in defence of the nation over nearly four decades, and reflect back on the courage, commitment and achievements of everyone who has contributed to the success of this extraordinary aircraft.” GP CAPT CAB TOWNSEND SAID: “Having conducted 9 major operations since 1990, today sees the return of the Tornado Force from its latest operational commitment, Operation SHADER.  Having flown almost 30000 flying hours and 3300 missions over Iraq and Syria over the previous 4.5 years, the Force is returning to the UK ahead of the Tornado’s retirement at the end of March 2019.

“Having served on operations continuously for almost 28 years, the Tornado Force has made an exceptional contribution to UK Defence. Today, we are celebrating the operational excellence of the Force today as the final 3 aircraft land from a 6 hour flight from Akrotiri.  Throughout the life of the Tornado, sustaining her operational capability has been a combined effort of our military personnel, Civil Servants, numerous Industrial partners and, of course, our families and friends who support us so brilliantly in all that we do. As such, it is fitting that today that the whole Station, including families, are here to welcome home Tornado from what is almost certain to be her last operational tour of duty”

‘Deliver Battle Winning Air Power for Current and Future Operations’18 MARHAM MATTERS ISSUE 1 2019

The formation were led by Gp Capt Cab Townsend who said: “I was immensely proud to have led the ‘Tail Art’ formation, our first event which celebrates the imminent retirement of the Tornado after almost 40 years of service.

“The success of the sortie was borne out of the outstanding Whole Force support at RAF Marham who remain focussed on sustaining Tornado operations and are as committed today as they were in 1982 when the first Tornado landed at the Station.”

This was the first outing for the ‘Camo jet’ which had managed to go unseen on its journey from Serco on the domestic site to the HAS site. The other two aircraft had been spotted by members of the enthusiast community on their journeys across the airfield and leaked

to social media ahead of official photographs being taken. We were able to let the general public know that the sortie would be taking place, and, with the kind permission of the landowner, a parking/viewing area was organised for the enthusiast community.

MARHAM MATTERS INTEGRATED TRAINING CENTRE

Located on the south side of the airfield, adjacent to 01 Threshold of Runway 01/19, the ITC now provides all training for UK Lightning personnel; this had previously been provided in the USA at Eglin AFB.  Having spent 8 months operating out of various temporary accommodations around the Station, the ITC staff started moving into the brand new, purpose-built building in the first week of October. The instructional staff started delivering training on

the 15th October and within 2 weeks, the ITC was operating at its maximum academic capacity. In order to meet 617 Sqn pilot demand, the Full Mission Simulators (FMS) began operations from the outset. The PTC houses the 4 FMS which can be linked together to provide up to a 4-ship formation. The PTC can also house up to 2 Deployable Mission Rehearsal Trainers (DMRT); these will be deployed to DOBs in support of Lightning operations and later this year will be embarked

on HMS Queen Elizabeth to support embarked Lightning aircraft. As well as high tech classrooms, the ATC element of the building employs an excellent suite of synthetic training aids and a maintenance hall/hangar to support training for all ground trades employed on Lightning. The following synthetic training aids/devices are  housed within the maintenance hangar, with the exception of the ASMTs and OML Lab which are specialist classrooms:

Ejection Seat Maintenance Trainer (ESMT). Used to train both groundcrew and aircrew in the aircraft escape system. It comprises a representative aircraft fuselage, a stand-alone ejection seat and a canopy (incl stand) used for Flexible Linear Shape Charge training; this is also supported by a separate workshop area. As well as facilitating ejection seat remove and install training, the ESMT also provides training for canopy removal and is now being utilised by crash crews to practice pilot removal.

INTEGRATED TRAINING CENTRE

The Lightning Integrated Training Centre (ITC) combines an Academic Training Centre (ATC), for all Lightning ground trades, and a Pilot Training Centre (PTC), and is currently one of only 2 such facilities within the Lightning Programme, with the other being in Australia.

Weapon Load Trainer (WLT). This device is full size mock-up aircraft used for weapon load training and some maintenance training concerning the weapon bay doors and operating the Integrated Power Package (APU on Tornado). Prime use is in providing a fully representative device for practising weapon loading of UK weapons inventory (PWIV, AMRAAM and ASRAAM). It negates the need for utilising real aircraft.Outer Mould Line (OML) Laboratory. The OML Lab provides a workshop environment that students can learn the various techniques and repairs that are required to preserve the health of the aircraft’s Low Observable (LO) characteristics which is now a responsibility of all aircraft maintenance trades, including the armourers.Aircraft System Maintenance Trainer (ASMT)(x2). The ASMTs are synthetic procedural trainers used to deliver virtual training tasks, teaching maintainers the correct process and procedure on component removal, installation and functional testing. Each system includes 12 workstations and an instructor operating console (IOS), which allows the instructor to monitor student progress and provide individual feedback through the use of headsets.  Lift Fan Clutch Removal and Installation Trainer (LFCR&IT). This is a STOVL variant unique device, used to train the removal and installation of the lift fan clutch in order to provide skill based training for mechanical trade personnel.Engine Module Assembly and Disassembly Trainer (EMA&DT). This device is a representative

F135 engine used to train personnel in the separation of the power modules to enable first line maintenance of the F135. This device is not yet installed but will be delivered shortly. To date, the ITC has delivered  3 Engineering Managers, 1 Pilot Flight Equipment (TG13), 1 Mechanical, 1 Avionics, 1 Weapons, 2 ALIS Admin Courses (TG4/CIS) and we are on our 3rd batch of AMM/AETs. The future is going to only get busier as we further develop and enhance our courseware and content as well as introducing new courses for Support Equipment maintainers (TG5) and Mission Support Personnel (TG9).  In the 3 months that the ITC has been operating, we have trained 152 students versus 433 UK students trained over 5 years at Eglin AFB. From the 1 July 2019, the ITC will start delivering pilot conversion courses. The stand-up of 207 Sqn (adjacent to ITC) this summer, as the Operational Conversion Unit (OCU), will allow us to further enhance our hands-on training element with immediate access to live aircraft, thus employing the ‘schoolhouse’ concept. Sherrie – please ensure the external building image is used, I don’t mind which other images make it,

FLYING OFFICER DONALD MACINTOSH MARHAM MATTERS

Mac was born in Scotland on 28 May 1922 and joined the RAF in 1941, aged just 19. He was posted to Newquay for Basic Training and Pilot Ground School. He was then given 10 hours of Pilot aptitude testing in a Tiger Moth. He passed selection and was sent to No 5 BFTS in Florida for training. He started flying the Stearman PT17s, then graduated to the Harvard. He passed out successfully and returned to the UK to continue training on the Oxford. He was then posted to the Operational Training Unit at Silverstone to learn to fly the Wellington. Over 100 aircrew were huddled into a large room and told to crew up and proceed through the exit door to give crew names once they had a full crew. Mac knew it was essential to have a good navigator and saw an intelligent looking chap sitting quietly in the corner. The Navigator had left studying for a Science degree at Oxford to join the RAF and had qualified ahead of all his peers. Mac bagged him and then a bomb aimer, Wireless operator and two air gunners. They were now a crew, all acting Sergeants and all very young. On one sortie toward the end of the course, after takeoff, the Wellington was vibrating very badly and Mac couldn’t get any more speed from her. He had a bracket of less than 5 kts between his current maximum speed and stall speed. Very skillfully, with the help of the whole crew, he landed, to find out that they were the only known crew to have survived a Wellington flight with 2 wing fuel covers undone. The airframe

fitter who had forgotten to secure them was charged and Mac was congratulated by the CO.Mac’s crew were then posted to the Heavy Conversion Unit at Wigsley to fly the Stirling for a month, they were then declared “combat ready” and were posted to IX(B) Squadron

at Bardney, Lincolnshire. Mac’s crew, under his exceptional leadership, went from strength to strength and were soon formation leaders, pathfinder leaders and windfinder leaders. Mac’s crew successfully flew all 3 TIRPITZ raids. Other attacks

included sinking a destroyer in Gdynia Harbour, 3 dams, 2 oil refineries, 4 viaducts, 3 bridges, 3 submarine pens, 1 ammo dump, 2 flying bomb sites, 2 cities and finally, hitting Adolf Hitler’s home at Berchtesgaden on  2 April 1945. Mac’s crew completed over 40 operational missions, they might have had some luck, but they had an exceptional operational pilot, a brilliant Navigator, keen-eyed air gunners and above average Flight Engineer and Bomb Aimer. Mac was commissioned in 1944 and awarded the DFC in 1945. At the end of the Second World War, Mac got himself onto a RAF Transport Command Conversion Course by bribing a WRAF Corporal with some stockings. Having converted to transport aircraft, he left the RAF with many happy memories and joined British South American Airways, which in 1949 became BOAC, then BA. Mac was a Captain on Lancastrians, Yorks, Comets, Boeing 707s then Boeing 747s for over 30 years. Captain Donald MacIntosh DFC was awarded the Légion d’Honneur in 2015. Mac passed away on 10 Jan 2019 and his Funeral was held on 23 Jan 2019. Representatives from the IX(B) Sqn Association, IX(B) Sqn RAF Marham and IX(B) Sqn (Designate) RAF Lossiemouth, were in attendance.

THE COMMUNITY OF THE CROSS OF NAILS MARHAM MATTERS

THE COMMUNITY OF THE CROSS OF NAILS

A NEW MEMBERLast year, the Community of the Cross of Nails, an organisation which began in Coventry and is focussed on building reconciliation, received a new member – the RAF Chaplain’s Branch. The Branch joined through St Clement Danes, the RAF Church in London, which was destroyed in the Blitz by incendiary bombs and then rebuilt in1958.

BACKGROUND TO THE CROSS OF NAILSOn November 14, 1940, the city of Coventry was devastated by a German bombing raid that lasted for over 10 hours, claimed 568 lives, and left over two-thirds of its buildings destroyed or damaged. Among the ravaged buildings was the Cathedral of St Michael, which had stood in the city since the late 14th century. Only its tower, spire, outer wall and the tomb of its first bishop remained – the rest was

rubble and shattered glass. The Nazi propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels was inspired by the raid to coin the word "Koventrieren"- to "Coventrate", or reduce to rubble. The bombing led to outcry and was often cited as a justification for the strategic bombing campaigns against German cities later in the war. However, grief and anger were not the only responses in Coventry. Even as the dust was settling and the embers smouldering, the Provost of Coventry Cathedral, the Very Reverend Richard Howard, had hope for peace and eventual reconciliation. On the wall at the front of the ruined cathedral he chalked: “Father Forgive”. Just six weeks later, in a Christmas radio broadcast transmitted worldwide by the BBC from the Cathedral ruins, Provost Howard addressed his audience:“What we want to tell the world is this: that with Christ born again in our hearts today, we are trying, hard as it may be, to banish all thoughts of revenge; we are bracing ourselves to finish the tremendous job of saving the world from tyranny and cruelty; we are going to try to make a kinder, simpler – a more Christ-Child-like sort of world in the days beyond this strife.”So began Coventry Cathedral’s journey on the path to becoming a world-leading and pioneering centre for reconciliation, renewal and peace. If you visit Coventry Cathedral today you can still see the ruins of the old Cathedral alongside the new building that rose out of

the ashes after the war. From this vision for reconciliation the Community of the Cross of Nails was launched, a worldwide network of over 200 churches, charities, peace-building centres, educational and military organisations, inspired by the Coventry story of active reconciliation. Different members focus on

political, racial, religious, social or economic reconciliation; they may address war and violent conflict, post conflict restoration or healing; their work can have broad and far-reaching, national or regional consequences, or it can make a significant difference to local communities and individual people’s lives. Members support one another, pray for one another and share with one another.

All members adhere to the three guiding principles of the Community of the Cross of Nails: healing the wounds of history; learning to live with difference and celebrate diversity; and building a culture of peace. The RAF Chaplains’ Branch hopes that that being part of the Community of the Cross of Nails will enable the whole RAF community to be able to reflect on our role as part of UK Defence, in terms of how we impact the world. Here at Marham we hope that this membership will find expression through a Camino pilgrimage in May 2019, events such as our Acts of Remembrance, and the use of the litany in prayer each week here in our chaplaincy. We hope over time that over time we might find all sorts of ways in which we can deepen our engagement in reconciliation – if you have ideas about how we can do this, please do get in touch. – Padre Chris

THE COVENTRY LITANY OF RECONCILIATIONThe Litany of Reconciliation was written by Canon Joseph Poole in 1958 and today is prayed regularly by CCN members around the world, and by many others on an occasional basis. While framed around the seven deadly

sins, it serves as a reminder that when we pray about the problems of the world around us, we need to begin by acknowledging the roots of those problems in our own hearts. The Litany is prayed, in a short ceremony taking at most ten minutes, at noon each weekday in Coventry Cathedral and in the Cathedral ruins on Fridays, and absolutely anyone is very welcome to join them when they do. Chaplains within the Branch have been encouraged to incorporate these response prayers into their own pattern of devotions as they pray for the life of the Station Community each week. You might like to reflect upon them. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.The hatred which divides nation from nation, race from race, class from class,Father, forgive. The covetous desires of people and nations to possess what is not their own,Father, forgive. The greed which exploits the work of human hands and lays waste the earth,Father, forgive. Our envy of the welfare and happiness of others,Father, forgive. Our indifference to the plight of the imprisoned, the homeless, the refugee,Father, forgive. The lust which dishonours the bodies of men, women and children,Father, forgive. The pride which leads us to trust in ourselves and not in God,Father, forgive.Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

MARHAM MATTERS GREEN ENERGY FOR RAF MARHAM

On 31 January Defence Minister Tobias Ellwood MP formally opened the biogas plant at Swaffham on 31 January, which was created through a partnership between the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), Future Biogas and Crown Commercial Services (CCS). The process, known as Anaerobic Digestion, produces gas which is collected and used to power multiple generators that produce electricity and will reduce the Ministry of Defence’s carbon emissions by 14,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. The waste residue from this process can then be dried and used as fertilizer to help grow local crops. The generating plant, built by Future Biogas, will generate 4.5 MW of electricity every hour, which can power 350,000 LED bulbs. This will provide for 95% of RAF Marham’s energy needs and save the MOD nearly £300,000 every year. Minister for Defence People & Veterans, Tobias Ellwood MP said: “RAF Marham is leading the way as Britain’s first green military airbase. The biogas fuel is a truly green and sustainable solution, helping us tackle climate change, support the local economy and save taxpayer money.  “I hope that this plant can act as

a model and we can see more sustainable energy schemes rolled out across other military bases.”  Philipp Lukas, Future Biogas Managing Director, said:“It’s fantastic to see the UK military join the green revolution. If we are to combat the imminent global threat of climate change, everyone, from all walks of life, needs to transition to renewable, sustainable energy as quickly as possible. “The AD plant in Swaffham now powers a significant local institution. In doing so, it not only helps secure the energy supply of a strategic national asset, but also takes the pressure off the local electrical infrastructure, which has

been really struggling to keep up with growing regional demand.“The huge success of this project leads us to hope the door will now open to more of a similar nature. Renewable energy projects that support the local circular economy have to become commonplace if we are to continue to see clean growth in the UK.”Rebecca Sedler, Director of I&C Sales & Marketing, EDF Energy, said:“EDF Energy is pleased to have provided another Power Purchase Agreement for one of our customers which will work for all parties for years to come and will help RAF Marham realise their sustainability ambitions. By taking care of the contractual and

operational risks, well-designed PPAs can help more decentralised, low-carbon generation enter the UK energy mix.”The plans have been in development since February 2015 and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, the part of the MOD which manages the Defence Estate, has been hard at work with colleagues in Crown Commercial Service, Future Biogas and energy company EDF to develop an electricity supply that is green and sustainable as well as providing financial savings. The project was sourced through frameworks put in place by the Crown Commercial Service, which helps the entire public sector to save time and money when buying common goods and services. CCS continues to work with the RAF on demand management and renewable energy.A feasibility assessment was undertaken by DIO to determine what benefits could be derived from this supply of clean energy. As well as saving money and reducing carbon emissions, it was determined that the new plant would increase power resiliency at RAF Marham by providing multiple pathways to electrical resources.

CYPRUS CHALLENGE MARHAM MATTERS

The Cyprus Challenge is a multi-national running event consisting of 4 races over 4 days in and around both Paphos and the Akamas National Park. The opening race of the challenge began at the Coral Bay Hotel, with runners taking on a 6km Time Trial mainly on the local roads. Each runner was set off by the starter in 10 second intervals, giving each runner the opportunity to catch those in front whilst also having to be aware of their own paces. There were some great performances by the Marham runners with the first male home being FS Matt Allen in an impressive 20:32, putting the first RAF Men’s Team ‘Lightning 1’ in a strong position. Also running well from the Marham PEd Flight was Cpl Lewis Truman who came home in a very respectable 26:25 for the 6Km. Day 2 saw an early start as the Team headed to the Akamas National Park for the infamous 11Km Trail Hill Run. This race favoured those who loved hill running with a total elevation gain of roughly 2100ft up dusty trails with little reprieve - especially in the warm weather. This race started at sea level and finished in the picturesque village of Pano Arodes. All seven Marham runners did themselves proud with Sgt Andy Merrett posting 01:05:40 and CT Paul Mulley running a solid 01:11:19 in what he described as a ‘near death experience’.

With some tired legs, Day 3 saw the half marathon stage of the Cyprus 4-day challenge get underway. Starting amass in the town of Neo Chorio, the race went straight into a 4km hill climb, winding their way through the Akamas National Reserve Park. Competitors then got a slight reprieve with a much needed 5km downhill part of the course which offered some outstanding views along the way. Once back at sea level the competitors had to tackle the final part of the course which was 11km undulating run towards the beach front finish; which was perfect for a post-race dip. The first RAF Marham runner home was again FS Matt Allen in another impressive time of 01:17:52 followed by Sgt Ben Churchman in 01:27:14. No less of an impressive achievement were those of SAC Sasha Perfect 01:51:53 and SAC Lewis Fowler 01:59:35 who were both competing in their first ever half marathons and this was after racing on the previous 2 days. The final stage of the event was the Paphos City 10km, a largely flat course departing from Paphos Harbour and conducting a loop of the airport road before re-joining the seafront back to the harbour. On some very, very tired legs all the Marham runners completed the race and the whole event with FS Matt Allen again the first home in 34:56 and his fellow PTI ‘non-runner’

Cpl Lewis Truman finishing in 47:17. All the runners were rightly proud of their achievements, having raced a total of 48km over varied terrains and intensities and even managing to pick up some awards in a very competitive multi-national field. FS Matt Allen finished 5th placed overall and 1st Vet40 and both him and SAC Sasha Perfect were part of the winning RAF teams. RAF Marham Running Club is always looking for new members of any ability who would like to compete for the station in both local and RAF fixtures, if you are interested please have a look at the club’s SharePoint page.

CYPRUS CHALLENGEOn the 21st Nov 18, seven members of the RAF Marham Running Club departed to Paphos to take

part in the Cyprus Challenge as part of a joint overseas visit with the RAF Athletics Association.
