Chapter IV

REPRESSIONTHIS CHAPTER deals primari ly with the subconscious mind of mCln.'Repression, in this chapter, is "t o keep under control;

restrain; check; as to 'repress a wish ; subdue ; curb."You are prevented from doing what you want to do.Here one is becoming close to the line of balance; If

you do no t overcome these spirits they will soon overcome you. You will become as Paul was. When hewould do good, evil was ever present with him. Inshort, these things, such as bitterness and complainingin your subconsc ious mind, become a HABIT, withSatan tak ing advantage.

This is not devil possession; but devil influence,whether direct or indirect, and still comes from an outside source.

SCRIPTURES SHOW REPRESSION{(Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and

clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, withall malic(/' (Eph. 4 :31 ) .

{(Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which arethese: Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,Idolatry . . . hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife,seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, reveIlings, and such like . . (Gal. 5 :19-21).((Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication,

wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness, full of envy,murder, debate, deceit, malignity, whisperers, backbiters,haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors ofevil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding, covenant-br.eakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful" (Rom. 1:29-31).We read in th e Bible that such men as King Saul,

Peter, Cain, Jacob, Jonah, Sampson, Judas, B a l ~ a m ,David, and others were repressed with such spirits and

that up with Him. She ran fo r a d ipper of water! Thatwas he r last! After 56 years of bondage she was free!

AN ALCOHOLIC SPIRIT got hold of a man andbound him for many years. He tried every remedyhe could think of to b reak loose from it. One n ight hecame forward as we made th e call. In a second oftime he was se t free and has been rejoicing ever since.A lady bound by alcohol, was also se t free, in amoment of time, and came back to the revival f:romnight to night telling the wonderful news to others!

We could relate hundreds of such cases.A REBELLIOUS SJ;:>IRIT oppressed a young convert.

In he r subconscious mind, it had been a repression,which had been there from he r childhood. Now Satanwas taking advan tage of it. I wondered what wasbinding and hindering the service, until finally thespirit was discerned and cast out. She was ins tant lydelivered, began to preach, ho ld reviva ls, and winsouls!Oh i f S aul had only been delivered when he had ar e p r e ~ s i o n of a rebellious spiri t! Bu t he went on toPossession!

AN EVIL SPIRIT took hold of a lady each timeshe came nea r the healing line where the power o fGod was being manifested, causing a violent shakingin he r body as the spi ri t o f God came against it. AsI questioned he r I found that she had been going toa fortune-teller. She was not yet possessed; bu t shewas under a severe repression. I t was a good thingshe g ot there when she did!A lady in Oakland, California, heard "father divine,"the colored man who claims to be God, talking to herevery day. He told he r to stay away from ou r revival;that we were of the devil. The man was in New Yorkand she was in Oakland. It was rea lly demon voiceswhich she heard. When she f ir st bel ieved in h im, because he r mother did, that was an obsession; but now,since he has control over her, it is repression!I wondered why a lady in Fort Worth, Texas, couldnot receive th e Holy Spi ri t. I s topped he r and askedhe r if she had no t gone to a: fortune-teller a few years

before. She studied for a while and said that she had,and agreed that she had such reactions, since that day,every time she came near th e power of God. Whenshe confessed, she was delivered and received a beautiful experience of t ~ h e Holy Spirit baptism!

A SPIRIT OF GOSSIP attacked a good member ofa church, who had much influence, causing he r to gofrom one member to another until she split the churchand the good pastor had to leave.Many times it is the truth that Satan wants oneto tell; bu t he knows that the truth about someonewill do more damage than a lie. A soldier could tellthe t ru th many t imes and th e army would never gett o the ir destination. A spy can ruin us by telling Russia th e truth.

A LUSTFUL SPIRIT caused a young convert to"abuse himself" daily. He was delivered in our revival.This first started with temptation; then it became anobsession; next it became Repression, because it controlled his actions. Scores that we know of, have beendelivered from lustful spi ri ts in our revivals lately.

A young lady said that each time she received forgiveness for he r sins she wen t back and Yielded to "theold gang" because she failed to receIve deliverance.Like Sampson, each time she came right back seekingGod. She was criticized by Christians because of he r"ups and downs." They were at least par tly to blamebecause they did not stay with he r when she professedunt il she was completely delivered.

A FAMILIAR SPIRIT repressed a lady who used topreach; bu t she was delivered before sh e was possessed.She came in the healing line one night and saidthat she heard voices continuously.

"Have you been to a spirit medium?" I inquired."My husband has been going," she replied.Then I warned he r against he r husband bringing

such spiri ts into he r home. After prayer, the wholeaudience could see that her expression changed. Beforegoing home she testified that the voices had all gone.

The other night a l ady came into th e healing linewho was full of fear and torment.

"Did you ever go to a fortune teller?" I asked.Then she confessed that after she went she graduallybecame bound. At first she was obsessed with thesuperstition which made he r believe if he r left hand

itched someone was coming who was in need. Sureenough Satan saw that someone came. If he r nailsitched that was the sign that something else was goingto happen.This went from one idea t o anoth er until finallyhe r l ife was in one continual trend of dread, fear, and

t orment . When she entered th e line he r face lookedlike she had been weaned on sour kraut; but herexpression really changed when she was delivered.That whole audience was so electrified by the powerof fai th that nearly any miracle could have happened.

EXPERIENCE PROVES REPRESSIONOne day before I got saved, while I was plowing in

the field, I suddenly began to hate my best friend. Igot so angry at h im about some little things he hadsaid untjl I wanted to kill h im. Although I was no tsaved I knew I must have help. I s topped the mulesand knelt down between my plow handles and askedthe Lord to take that spirit away from me; it suddenly left. Within five minutes I felt good about thisboy.A SULLEN SPIRIT caused my wife and me to go

three days without speaking to each other after wemarried.My Sis te r and Father lived in the same house forabout ten years without carrying on a conversat ion.Usually when one wanted the other to know somethingI relayed th e message. She received deliverance,through th e power of God twenty years ago. Sincethen, they have been all a father and daughter shouldbe.A member of a church I pastored would no t answerme when I asked why they had no t been coming tochurch. She refused to tell anyone anything. Whatever th e reason was, the whole family shut it up intheir hearts, and s tayed at home, until she was de-

livered years later . She finally confessed after she lostan eye. I hardly know which is worse--one with aspirit that will cause him or he r to gossip and tearupa church, bu t who is quick to repent and ask forforgiveness, or one with a spirit that causes him toshut a thing up in his heart , and refuse to tell anyone,and takes i t to hell with him!

A TIMID SPIRIT tried to keep me from doing anything for the Lord just after I go t saved. I thoughtI just couldn't speak in public. I t was a repressionwhich I had fo r years. By God's Grace I overcame it.Read, "THE GRACE OF GOD IN MY LIFE." I wasso bashful I would crawl under th e bed when I sawsomeone coming.We dea lt with a minister who could make a tabledance, if he yielded to th e spirit of th e devil.While we were in a recent revival we lived in th ehouse with a sister who could look into a cup and tell

fortunes by coffee grounds; bu t she would no t do it ,for fear she would become possessed. She showed signsof deliverance after coming into th e healing line.

While I was fasting and praying for a longseasonI wanted to go whip a certain -preacher and a schoolteaGher who had done me wrong 25 years before. Ialso wanted to whip a man who had left his wife andchildren. During that fast, God delivered me! Thatrepression had been there since before I was saved.A GRUMBLING SPIRIT kept a sister's body pulled

down unti l he r body became so weak it would no tresist disease. I asked he r what she was grumblingabout."How did you know?" she asked.Then I told he r how the Lord showed me the scrip

t u r ~ , James 3:6, which says that th e tonglle can defileth e whole body. Just as a doctor can look at yourtongue and tell you have been eating trash, so canGod look at your tongue and tell what you have beensaying.When she obeyed James 5:16 she was healed on th espot.I know of a wonderful musician and Sunday S c ~ o o l

teacher who said that there was nothing wrong in letting his mind think on love songs. This obsessionturned into a repression. He began to play and sing,them. He soon ran away with a deacon's wife.

One lady said every time she started to hug herhusband she shut he r eyes and imagined that ClarkGable was in her arms. She had looked at movies ofClark Gable so long that they became a part of he r-It was a repression!AN ANGRY SPIRIT took hold of Brother N. Hegot so mad at his ca r that he whipped it with a pole,scolded it, and pushed it into th e river.

Mrs. T. go t mad ather ca r and chopped it to pieceswith a chopping, ax. Brother S. go t so mad at his oldmule that he cursed it ; then looked at i t and said, "Youmade me do it." But when Sister L. get s mad she liesabout it and says he r feelings are hurt! Two sins in one!

MANY ARE BOUNDLazarus needed to be loosed a fte r he was broughtback to life. Jesus says to us today. "Loose him and le thim g o . ~ ' The dry bones came together before theywere covered with flesh. There was a shaking beforethere was a g re at a rmy with p0'Yer.There are c o n Y ~ c t s , who ar e no t in the penitentiary;there are sick people who are not in th e hospital;there are people who ar e bound, but not with chains.One day a fine looking lady parked in front of ou r

apartment, got out of he r car, walked in and sa t down.She was a member of one of th e churches cooperatingin the revival. She paid me a pledge wh ich she hadmade on some expense. Then she wanted help with herproblem. Soon she was cry ing as if her hea rt wouldbreak, as she told how she had been mistreated bythe past or and the church for twelve years."Do I have to listen to all that stuff?" I asked.She was surprised, for she was expecting sympathy."You need to be delivered from that spi ri t o f self-

pity; you ar e sorry fo r yourself, or you would no t bewhimpering and whining," I said.Between he r sobs she said, "Yes, bu t I have ha d

such a hard time; I lost my husband a few yearsback; I-I-I."

I told he r that other people were hav ing just ashard a time as she, bu t they were not carrYing theirtroubles all ove r town f rom house to house, and unloading them on every preacher that came along.

She said, "Yes, bu t you ar e th e only one I tell themto."

I said, "You spill that junk on everyone you meet,whoever you talk to, sinner, or Christian. That is thevery reason th e sinners do no t want to come to th echurch or to hear your pas to r preach; that is thereason scores of them are a lready in hell; you sentthem there! That grumbling and complai ning is inthere, and you will belch it ou t on everyone you meet.People walk 10 blocks to keep from meeting you. Youare driving more people from th e church than thepastor will ever win. You need to be delivered fromthat spirit!" I explained how she could be delivered.We dropped to ou r knees and had a prayer meeting.She was a different person from then on;

HOW YOU CAN BE FREEPray and f as t. Get into a room to yourself and pray

and read all th e scriptures on ou r card. I t is free. Thengo into the, healing line. Write one word, Obsession,oppression, repression, etc. And I will know. I f youcannot go to a full Gospel church of any kind, Godhas provided a way fo r you to be se t free by sendingfo r a prayer cloth. We have hundreds of testimoniesaffirming that people have been delivered from spiritsthis way (Acts. 19:11-12). Be sure and receive theHoly Ghost.Confess to God instead of jus ti fy ing yoursel f andblaming others. Get someone you can trust and tellhim, or her, th e whole s to ry . By this I mean tell yourf aul ts i ns tead o f the faults of o ther s ( James 5:16).There is no use in an y more than you and one Spiri.tFilled person (who can p ray and discern) to know it .After that Spirit is cast out, be sure and stay fullof God and be led by the Spiri t each day. I f you fail to receive deliverance, and wai t until youget into discouragement, when your spirits have be-come so low you don't care, you will go into a depres-sion. That is discussed in the next chapter.

temptation three times by saying, "It is written" andyou can stay delivered. But you must know what iswritten. You are no better than Jesus (Matt. 4) . Faithcometh by hearing the Word with your spiritual ears(Rom. 10:17) .If you are single and bothered wi th lus t and feelthat you should stay single for some reason, rememberthese things: After you are delivered from that spirit,

keep your mind employed on some good work con-tinuously. That is a sure cure. Stay busy working inthe young people's band, reading some good book, ordoing some good work.

The reason a stream does not freeze when it is run-ning down a mountain side is because it is too busyflowing. A still body of water freezes. An idle mind isthe devil's work shop.

Take par t in every service, especially the altar serv-ice. When the disciples fed the multitude each of themhad a basket full left. Tes tify every time you get achance.

There is a story about a soldier boy caught in thesnow wl}o sa t down on a log when he was about tofreeze. He found that the ~ o covered with snow wasanother soldier who had nearly frozen to death. Whilehe was working to bring him back to life he got sowarm that he saved his own life.Speak evil of no man, not even in your mind. Thinkof their good pqints. Justify them instead of criticiz-ing them. I f you begin to feel bitter about someonebake him a cake and carry i t to him.

Chapter VDEPRESSION

T HIS CHAPTER deals mainly with t he SPIRIT ofman.Depression is to have a low spiri t, to be in a gloomymood; to be downcast, sad, and glum; to be in a discouraged, mournful, or low spiri t. This is not devilpossession; but it is depression; it is devil influence,

and also comes from an outside source.One cannot hold up under h eavy oppression, obsession, and repression too long; h is spirit will break

sooner or later, depending on his constitution.

SCRIPTURES PROVE DEPRESSION"By sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken" (Prov.15:13)."A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a

broken spiri t drieth the bones (Prov. 17 :22)."He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a

city that is broken down, and without walls" (Prov.25 :28).

u . . . I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed"(Ps. 77:3).When Saul was only obsessed, David 's music drove

the evil spirit away from his mind ( I Sam. 16:23); butmusic failed to relieve him when he became repressed(I Sam. 18:10, 11). Finally he came to the place ofcheerlessness, so depressed that he decided to go to awitch, the very thing he had punished others for doing!I t is surprising what people will do when they aredepressed!

The spi ri ts o f the children of Israel became so lowthat they gave way to whoredoms (Hos. 4).Since the daughter of the Syrophenician woman was

"vexed" with a devil it may have been that she wasonly depressed (Matt . 15). Undoubtedly she became48

angry, cursed, and discouraged; then yielded to an unclean spirit.When one is vexed with an unclean spirit, the human

spirit becomes so low that most any kind of evil spiritcan take over (Acts 5:16; Luke 6:18). They finally become as low in spiri t as a natural brute beast (Jude).Many of them loose all sel f respect and decency, andlive like brute beasts. Their standard of living is drag-ged into the dir t! God said they would howl fo r vexation of spirit (Isa. 65:14).

The people who ar e obsessed with false doctrine,and fail to be delivered, will finally become so depressedin spi ri t that they will commit vile, unclean acts intheir worship. Many cults today include sex relationsin their ceremonies (I I Peter 2; I Tim. 4).

OBSERVATION PROVES DEPRESSIONA MELANCHOLY SPIRIT depressed Mr. C. He isgoing through a depression in spirit just as a person

can go through a financial depression. His spirit seemedto hold up very well while h is wife ran around withother men for years , leaving his chi ldren in his care,bu t when she forsook the whole family, and he had toput them in the Children's home, it seemed that hisconstitution broke. He got into a low, don't care, melancholy state. Who knows what his next step will be?A GLOOMY SPIRIT changed the countenance of

Mr. L. At one time I saw him in high spirits, with ahappy-go-lucky attitude but, during the long financialdepression, little by l it tle, his spirit broke. His bank account diminished; his crops failed; droughts and floodsbrought him to pover ty. His cows and hogs died likeflies. Funeral bills, medicine bills, etc., came his way .As he stood and watched the storms take away hisearthly possessions, for which he had worked hard, hisspirit t u m b l e ~ and his ambition crumbled! I t was allhe could stand! He would gaze for hou rs into space,without talking or looking at anyone. Many times whensomeone talked to him, he wouldn't hear them. Had itnot been fo r God's mercy to deliver, what would havebeen the next step?

The writer once had his hopes set h igh in life; butdepression of spiri t came at an ear ly age when hishealth broke, with no hopes for th e future. He wasdelivered before he made that awful last step!A CHEERLESS SPIRIT depressed a minister's wife

in one of my campaigns (because he r husband receivedthe Holy Spirit Baptism), until she ran away and wouldno t even come to church.A SPIRIT OF GLOOM took hold of one of th e mainmembers of a church while we were in the best revival

in that church's history. She locked hersel f in thebathroom and s tayed t he re unt il her husband couldstand it no longer. He sent for the pastor. They cu tth e door down with an ax, and discovered that she wasno t in there! She had climbed ou t the window. Sometime later they found her, just before she became possessed with a suicide spiri t.

THE SPIRIT OF FEAR depressed one of th e district church officials until it became necessary to carryher to a mental hospital. She had first become obsessedwith a spi ri t of hurry as she served over 150 churches;then, as she did not t ak e time to get alone with Godin prayer, it became an oppression; that grew until itwas a depression.

Fear took hold of one of our fine missionaries whileshe was in a foreign land near some devil worshipers.This grew from obsession to depression until she couldhear th e spirits speaking to her; but the power of Godinstantly delivered her, before she was possessed!A COVETOUS SPIRIT first obsessed th e mind ofMr. C. Failing to be delivered, it grew to repression. Hecontinued to gamble! He los t all h is money, his home,his clothes, and his reputation. After he los t his wife,

and his children ended up in a State home, -he wentabout as long as he could under a severe depression.His spirits were very low, bu t God delivered him!A LUSTFUL SPIRIT oppressed a young lady so long,

i t 'Caused he r to hang out at the night clubs al l thetime. After she went through a terrible depression, andwas almost ready to be possessed, she was set free (del ivered) in a service in five minutes . This first started

with the obsession of thoughts. She had been madebelieve that it was all right to kiss boy f riends. Thisspirit took he r down.A TORMENTING SPIRIT brought a good Chris tian

l ady under such depression that he r nerves becametense. The nerves tied up in the back of he r neck andhead. The fluid was thrown into he r stomach. I t poisoned her whole system. (No wonder your food will no tdigest i f you ea t while you are angry ! Your sp it tl e iseven poison!) After she was pu t into a mental hospitalshe saw the devil as he came up to her, took hold ofhe r body and st ar te d t o tear every muscle apart! Shecried ou t to God; and His Spiri t came and foughtagainst th e demons of depression! She was set freeand came home!

DEPRESSION BRINGS MORE DISEASEThe spirit of some people breaks down quicker thanin other people. The spirit of some holds up through th e

worst of disease a,nd sickness. That has been provenon the battle field and in dirty prison camps.THE SPIRITS OF WORRY AND FEAR had depressed the spirit of a lady who came into ou r healingline lately. She had suffered with cancer of the bloodso long that she had given up under the load. No oneknew the blackness of th e d e p r ~ s s i o n she was going

through. Her spi ri t became so low that she could no tresist new diseases. The ent ire audience could tell thedifference as she was se t free in a moment of time. Shetestified later that she could sleep perfectly, free fromdisease!A sister in a nearby town lived constantly under adepression of fear that she was going to have cancer.It happened according to he r faith. What she feared

came upon her! (Job 3:25). Her spirit became so lowthat the cancer entered.A SPIRIT OF MELANCHOLY depressed a pastor'swife until she was in such a state of discouragement

and d ~ s p o n d e n c y that she did not want to live. Godsent me 200 miles to h er rescue. She was delivered!

A DESPONDENT SPIR IT had to be deal t with onenight in th e line before a lady could accept healing.THE SPIRIT OF DOUBT had depressed a lady until

she began shaking 'her head like a mule, as we startedto pray fo r he r hearing. After that spiri t was cas t outshe received instant healing. She heard fo r th e firsttime in 67 years! Even a watch ticking!

A MOURNFUL SPIRIT caused sister D. to stay un-de r a burden all th e time fo r he r husband. She wasso depressed unt il he could hardly live with her . I ex-plained to he r that the Lord would keep that whichwe commit into His hands . I f she took it back into he rown hands after God had given he r th e victory thenGod had no t promised to keep it. After she was de-livered she prayed th e burden off until he r spiri t waslight and free. She had such assurance that she wen taround singing. Her husband became hungry for whatshe had and wa s saved a few weeks later!

A SPIRIT OF GLUM depressed sister L. until he rhusband lef t he r to get ou t of such a discouraging at mosphere. She was always looking on th e dark sideof things.

A SPIRIT OF DESPAIR so dep ressed a sister untilwhen I went t her e for a re\f tval she arose and said,"There is no use to have a r evival as long as thischurch is in th e shaPe it is in."

DEPRESSION PREPARES FOR POSSESSIONA SPIRIT OF ACCUSATION first obsessed th e mindof a minister. I t stayed there until she was oppressedwith disease. She became so depressed in spiri t unt ilshe believed she had committed th e unpardonable sin.She was almost ready for possession when she wasdelivered!

A SPIRIT OF DON'T CARE depressed an ex-nurseunt il she did not want to live. Then a murder spiritcaused he r to kill he r boy and girl. A suicide spilitcaused he r to tr y to kill herself. She crossed ov r theline to possession. She is lYing now betv een life anddeath and says if she ad it to do over she would do iagain!

I talked to a person who had been' delivered from ahospital fo r nervous ailments who said that she sawmany there 'who were so depressed over their conditionthat they "gave up" and were possessed on th e spot.

ExplanationWhen a person's mind lingers on one thing he looks

into space. You can speak to him and he will look atyou, no t even knowing what you said. He is so low inspirit that he is like a city with the walls broken down.

Proverbs 25 :28-({He that hath no rule over his ownspirit is like a city that is broken down, and withoutwalls." They are open. for anything.

"DEPRESSION WIm A CONTRITE HEART({The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a br ok en

heart,. and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit" (Ps.34:18).Real ly when one's sp iri t is depressed he is at th e

forks of th e road. The walls are broken down; he ha sno resistance. He is forced to accept th e spirit of th edevil or th e Spiri t of God.At this point many ar e just about to accept a murderspirit or a suic ide spi ri t when they come in contact

with a deliverance revival and are se t free! When OBegoes to th e end of his own s trength he e ithe r acceptsGod's power or the devil 's power! Millions are nearth e forks of th e road today! You can be anointed tobind up th e broken heart, se t at liberty them thatare bruised, and comfort them that mourn (Luke4:18). Many have we seen who came to th e forks ofth e road and were delivered!

Holy Spirit checked me and told me to walk aroundth e block instead. When I got nearly around the blocka man called my name. I looked around and saw a manwith a bandage around his head and one eye covered.He told me that he was in misery because he hadshattered glass in both eye balls. I d idn't know himbut h e knew me and told me his story.Because he did no t stick t o the vow he made to God

while in the Army, and was riding in a c ar the nightbefore with another man's wife, they had hi t a cowand blacked out; they came to themselves in the hos-pital. It made headlines.

During that awful depression, when he was almostto the line of being possessed, they were both saved,delivered and healed!

A TRIP TO MARSA preacher filled his appointment with me this

morning and told rne his story. I listened. He had felta call to preach all his life. He went to Alaska to min-ister, but went into business instead. After a few yearshe began to loose. The bonding company took over his$50,000.00 apartment house, and several thousand dol-lars worth of equipment. He went bankrupt with about$12,000.00 due him" and he owed about that much.He fell into an awful depression; and he also go t downin his'back so he could no t walk. His wife and family,having been used to plenty, threatened to leave him.He improved enough to come hotne and is now pastor-ing a real. small church, bu t is no t satisfied. He hadwalked the floor all night in a high tension of nerveswith his fist c linched and his tee th gri tted together,wanting to curse every breath, saying, "Oh, God!" Nowhe is about to loose his ca r and everything!

After he told his s to ry and we prayed I was led tosay, "Let's go on an imaginary trip to Mars. Therewe can see all th e planets, the moon, stars, and the sun.This earth is a spark in the distance. I t is mostly cov-ered by water. North America is no t large enough .tosee, not to speak of all the mountains and glaciers.And there , among millions of people, all with problems,

ar e you. How large are you in God's s ight , and howlarge are your problems?""Very small," he said, "with an expression half atease.""And you have made your trouble as large as all

the planets, mountain ranges, and glaciers combined,"I added. "In your mind, your problem is larger thanGod, larger than you. You have thought yourself intothis. You have t ri ed and t ri ed to solve it and the moreyou tr y to ge t : ~ off your mind the more indelibly itis s tamped on your mind.""God says to forget those things which are behind

and look forward to the future, bu t you have yourmind on th e things behind, and s ay the re is absolutelyno future. You have just told me that you have failedyour ,God. You have not! This is the best thing thatever happened to you. When you-are through, Godbegins. You come to th e end of your stren gth andwalk into God's strength, as Moses, David, Jacob, andJoseph. We can't save 8.;; drowning man until he quitstrying to save himself. You have just told m you havetried and tried. Now stop trying. Don't tr y any more.Wrap aU that up and th row it into the ocean. Youhave condemned yourself, when God let you learn thatlesson on purpose. Yet you will no t forgive yourself.Your unconscious sense of guilt makes you punishyourself by wanting to fail."

He studied and said, "I, guess that is right.""You say, you can 't . That is what th e devil says.

Paul says, 'I can do all things through Christ.' He said,'I have fought a good f ight, ' although he failed once.Enoch said, 'I have pleased God!' Hezekiah said, 'Lord,I have lived for you' and had 15 more happy years."Then he acknowledged that he had not knowinglyfailed God. I wrote it down and had him to sign his

name to it. He had condemned himself. God had for-given Him fo r his mistakes, bu t he had refused to for-give himself. He had no faith because he was undercondemnation (I John 3:8), bu t he condemned him-self by agreeing With Satan (Rom. 14:14).I asked him, i f he could reach into a grab box and

grab an order for a job, what he would want i t to say.He studied for a minute and said, "To go into evangelistic work and be in service every night."

"Can you think of any place where you could possibly ge t a job like that?" I asked."Yes, I do," he smiled, "you have opened up a newout look on life; I will never le t Satan hear me say, 'I

can't' or, 'I have failed God' again." He left, a happyman, delivered-and knowing how to stay free!Our hates, memories, and bitterness ar e stench inGod's sight. Get out of yourself and view yourself from

afar. How foolish it is to le t memories des troy ourpeace! You ar e bigger than a mist ake. God has forgiven you if you have asked Him. You should forgiveyourself. Your help comes from the Lord who madeheaven and t he ear th and all the planets; you can'thelp yourself by brooding over the past.

your possibilities, as God thinks. God sees what youcan become instead of what you have done. He stillhad confidence in Peter , and saw that he would ye t succeed. I t is absurd to le t your mind deal with nothingbu t yourself. Have confidence in, and stop criticizingyourself.

The Gospel is not wri tt en jus t for s trong saints, butto you also. God's grace is sufficient!Don't l et your spi ri t grow grey with your hair. The

happiest person is the one ..who t hinks abou t happythings. Keep thinking of things lovely, honest, and ofGOOD report (Phil. 4 : 8 ~ .AFTER YOU ARE DELIVERED

You should come into the healing line, or send fora deliverance cloth (Acts 19:11-12) if you are not neara ful l Gospel Church. Then, after you are delivered, ifyou want to recover and stay free, do these things:

Stop magnifying yourself as large as Mars. Start56

doing things for others. Think of their problems. Thenyou will not th ink of you r own. Get out and walk acouple of miles each day. See that there are otherthings besides your world. Mop floors, saw wood, orwash dishes, or wash your ca r. Stay full of the Spirit.Sing songs of victory. Memorize John 14:14. Quote itinstead of thinking or t alking of yourself. Get alonewith God and relax in God's presence and l et Him talkto you one hour of each day. You will throw switchesthat will turn on God's strength, and start it flowinginto your very being like a thirsty land after a big rain!A woman was riding in a wagon almost frozen to

death. Someone go t he r baby and sa t it in th e road andle t the wagon go off and leave it. She jumped out andran to save th e baby; in so doing, she saved herself.

Start today in the' business of saving others.aH e that is sl ow to anger is better than the mighty;

and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city"(Prov, 16 :32).Remember this: Satan can never possess you untilyou give up your Profession by going into a state ofRecession, which we will explain next.

Chapter VI

RECESSIONT-HIS CHAPTER deals mostly with th e WILL ofman.Recession is the act of going back - retiring - orwithdrawing.This is still not devil possession, but there is onlyone more s tep to it. I t is the opening of the door for

th e spirits to enter. It is devil influence from ~ outsidesource. It is throwing the ca r into neutral gear. Youcannot stay this way. After the human spirit breaks,and a man turns his will over to Satan, and stops trying to resist him, Satan has full r ight t o come in hisway, whether suddenly or gradually.

RECESSION BRINGS CONCESSIONThis discussion deals largely with the constitution of

man.Concession is the act of granting or yielding; it isacknowledgment, giving admission, granting a__privilege

for a special purpose, but not for every purpose.There is no use in trying to fool yourself. There is

no stand-stil l experience. One is going one way or theother. We are servants to whom we yield ourselves toobey (Romans 6:16) . One is really yielding either toSatan or God.Here man surrenders himself temporarily to Satan

to be used, bu t no t fo r a complete possession.Many in this condition claim to be saved but, inreality, they ar e serving Satan. They have thrown

their will into neutral gear. Their goods ar e gone, butthe sign is still up.

SAUL'S EXPERIENCEKing Saul really had a testimony after his goods

were gone ( I Sam. 15:}.3). He even preached. Let's re-view briefly his experience. He had a new heart, was58

changed into ano ther man and served God for years;ye t he yielded to a sUicide spirit and killed himself (ISamuel, chapters 10 to 31). Notice how he wen t fromstep to step.1. OBSESSION

P o p u l a r i t y ~ b e y e d th e people---eonfessed to Samuel instead of God.Pride-big in his own sight .Greed-thought of th e spoil.Evil spirit-left his mind when David played music( I Sam. 16:23).

2. OPPRESSIONRebellion-stubbornness, hypocrisy, justified himself.Hatred--envy, because David was more righteous.Anger-murder, triede'to kill David.Evil spirit-failed to leave as David played (I Sam.18:10,11).

3. DEPRESSIONGrief-sorrow, trouble, regret, despondency, discouragement, war, despair.4. RECESSIONGave up his profession; in desperation, went to a.witch.5. POSSESSION

Forsaken by the Lord; no answer-no deliverance!Witchcraft-awful fear, suicide, lost forever!

MY OBSERVATIONA pastor told me of two boys, who are evangelists,traveling around over the count ry holding revivals.

They claim the victory, are displaying talents, bu t arehomosexuals. If anyone is delivered from devlIs intheir meetings, it will be because of the prayers of theother people; for Satan does not ca st out Sat an (Luke11!l4-23).I know of a teacher in a Bible School who is in thes ~ m e condition.A pastor was released from his organization becausehe was found to be a homosexual. An evangelist wentover 2,000 miles to hold a revival. After his meeting it

was learned that he .had this spiri t. A pastor told methe other day that there were girls who came to thatchurch, who were "living together" (homosexuals).Two gir ls who came to one of our revivals were "rooming together." One now wears her hair shingled. andhas a good start of beard. You will understand in thenext chapter why i t is necessary for me to mentionsome of these things.

Last week I had a special interview with a ministerwho had been t rapped by a strange woman. Althoughhe had been bound by this spirit for years, and wasye t holding meetings, he was afraid to mention it toothers, for fear h e would loose his papers. He was almost possessed as he was haunted continuously withthe fear that his s ins would find him out. After strug-gling for years, just before going down into possession,he was refilled and delivered; he left, happy once again!

We have beenpraying over t his matter ourselves, bu t do notseem to get any light from God for the way ofdeliverance . . . we long to get rid of this desirefor sin within. . . . We want to know i f you willseek God for our deliverance? There should bedeliverance for people like us "

could name who are crying for freedom. Instead ofbeing delivered, they are being criticized and " turnedout." They can't get delivered within themselves, andare afraid to mention it.

Last night I t alked to a young man after he wasdelivered. He had been arrested 64 times and sent tojail. He hung himself in ja il , bu t they cu t him down.He showed me deep gashes in each wrist where he hadslashed them in jai l with a razor blade, but they savedhis life. He explained that his condition came on gradu-ally for 18 months before he was really possessed. Possession came then after he had been drunk two weeks.Satan possesses as people make concessions to him!This man is now preaching the Gospel!

RECESSION BRINGS PROFESSIQNThis deals with profession from the HEART of man.Profession here means public declaration or CON

VERSION.((Let us hold fast our profession" (Heb. 4 :14).We ar e speaking of professing Satan instead of God;

when one looses his good profession.No doubt , as you r e ~ d ,Some of the experiences ofprofessed Christians in the las t four chapters, you have

had a quest ion in your mind like this: Just what doesone have to do to be backslidden? The opinion of people varies widely on this subject.Many people are honestly fighting the .bat tl e and

struggling for freedom; they a re looking for someonewith fai th and the power of deliverance. They want tolive for God, but it seems that they are overwhelmedby all the Satanic forces of hell. They don't know theway to success as you do. I t is up to you to help them.

I t is t.rue they yield to Satan easily, as did Sampson;and, l ike him, they quickly fly to the Lord' fo r deliverance. Just as easily as they yield to t h devil, they yieldto the conviction of the Holy Spi rit . Does no t Jesusforgive, even seventy times seven? if they do as Sampson and die as they get back to God they will be savedas by fire, without a reward; their works will be burnedup ( I Cor. 3:12-15). I t is possible for a Christian to sin

and receive forgiveness. It is also possible for him tolive without sin ( I J ohn 2:1).One is backslidden when he gives up his profession

and quits trying. Some do th is when they are firsttempted, some when obsessed, while some go onthrough each stage, through oppression and depression,and yet keep fighting the battle!Nothing can separate us f rom God, but we, l ike the

prodical son, may give up ou r inheritance and walk offand qui t trying!As long as one holds his profession from his heart,

and does not qui t th e Lord, it is impossible f or him tobe possessed.There fo re , ye who have fought so long, remember

this: Keep trying. Never give God up! A winner nev.eI'qui ts ; a quiter never wins! I had rather ride the a ltarbench to heaven than to never ge t there. Don 't everprofess Satan!UM y little children, these things wri te I unto you, that yesin not and i f any man sin, we have an advocate with the

Fa.ther, Jesus Christ the righteous" (I John 2 :1) .I admire Peter especially for one thing-he never didge t so far bu t that he returned. Let's look into:

PETER'S EXPERIENCEWhile he was yet preaching, Jesus rebuked Satan inhim.1. OBSESSIONPopularity-wanted to be the greatest.Unbelief-accused Jesus of being mistaken.Quarreling-about his position.Boasting-said that he lNould never backslide.Pride-did no t want his feet to be washed by Jesus.

2. OPPRESSIONSlept-while the master prayed.Fought--cut off the soldier's ear.Slothfulness-followed afar off.Worldliness -warmed by the wrong fire, near aflapper.3. REPRESSIONAngry--cursed and swore.

4. DEPRESSIONDefeat-fruitless night of toil, regret.5. RECESSIONQuit trying, desperation, bitter tears.

6. EXORCISMDelivered--came back before he was possessed!You may do the same thing - just before you arepossessed.

MY OBSERVATIONI know of a scnool teacher who became discouragedbecause the directors did no t like it when a revivalbroke ou t in his school . He wen t into desperation andbackslid.One.of our young converts went to a bal l game. Shedecided that she h ad backslidden, quit trying, and isnow in a worse s ta te . As stated before, you are backslidden when you quit God.I know of a lady who committed an immoral sin bu tas soon as she got.a chance, she came straight to us.She confessed to th e p asto r and to God. She was re stored and, after five years, she is s ti ll going ori withGod. We do no t advocate sinning but, if Satan trapsyou, don't start serving him continuously.Another of our young converts walked into the kit

chen the next day after he had received the HolySpirit and saw a ca t on the table. He cursed it. He didno t stop, however, until h e went to the woods and gotforgiveness and are-filling.

CONFESSION BRINGS IMPRESSIONImpression in this chapter deals with man's conscience.Impression is the art of nlarking or stamping-aseal. I t is the effect made on the mind or emotions by

something on the outside of man.You may purchase a place, and have a seal pu t onthe deed, even before you move in and take possession.Mr. M. received an i m p r e s ~ i o n that he was a Uni tedStates detective. The devil told him that and made himbelieve it. He went from house to house in a strangecountry, telling them he was looking for a criminal.

He was under the impression that someone had killeda man who died. When the sheriff caught up with himhe was searching houses, looking under people's beds,.etc. The residents thought he was a detective . Hewould take people wrongly. He was under the impression that I was his enemy, even waiting fo r me witha gun. He thought people were after him, and evenimagined he heard them in the woods coming for him.He was hearing demons. He was full of fear and t orment. He was under a deep impression that a bigweight was over h im and might drop on him anytime.

BALAAM'S EXPERIENCE (Num. 22)1. OBSESSION

Popularity, covetous for fame, mind on self.2. REPRESSIONDisobedience, anger, unkindness, prejudice. rebellion.3. DEPRESSIONDisappointment, despondency.4. RECESSION

Gave up profession-was deluded by wrong impression.Desperation-showed Balak how to make God'schildren bring a curse on themselves.

5. POSSESSION.Adultery, idolatry, apostasy, reprobate.God had him killed-no deliverance (Num. 31:8).Balaam knew th e will of th e Lord bu t he p rayedabout it anyway, and tried to change God. He finallyreceived a strong delusion, which led him into possession.I know o f a sister who t ri ed to change God's mind

and persuade Him to le t he r do what she wanted to do.From then until now she cries for deliverance as didEsau, but there is no place of repentance (Heb. 6:6).There is no wonder that some even kil l their familyand say that God told t hem to do so. They ar e underan impression which slides them into possession! Youcan't change th e truth of God into a lie (Rom.1:25) ;though some think they do. If something used to be

wrong, it is wrong now. God never changes. The devilnever changes; sin never changes; God's Word neverchanges! You are the one who changes! Yet many people are under th e delusion that God has decided to le tthem do the t hing He once told them not to. They ar ein a dangerous place. I f you used to feel condemnedover something, and don't feel condemned over i t now.you ar e in a serious condition. You may ge t a reprobatemind, have your conscience seared, become as a natural b ru te beast, and have no more conscience than ahog! God says we can become as Balaam! You hadbetter receive deliverance now!At this state many tr y to ease themselves on dope.

They mumble to themselves.Remember that Balaam's experience started withonly an obsession!

RECESSION BRINGS DESPERATIONDesperation here deals mostly with man's nerves.I t is the s ta te of being without hope-the recklessness of despair.There is no rest from now on; the mind becomesfoggy.I t will help us here to briefly consider

Popularity-worldliness, spi ri t of anti-christ.2. REPRESSIONRebellion-stubbornness, self righteousness, disobedience, murder.3. DEPRESSIONDriven from God's presence-regretful, despondent.4. THERE IS DELIVERANCE FOR YOU!I know of a man who s tayed drunk two weeks at atime, even layout unconscious. Although he was over

e i ~ h t y , he was set free, saved and filled with the HolyGhost.Another man in ou r meeting who was a drunkard,bootlegger, a dope addict, and a wife beater, came and

was delivered completely. He has since died in the faith.Mr. N., in this condition, came home and broke upth e furniture, whipped his family, beat his wife and

cheated on her. He was saved and delivered in ou rmeeting; his whole family was saved also.One man who had broken a beer bottle and stuck it

into a boy's heart, got d runk and came to ou r meetingto kill the preacher. \yithin 10 minutes he was saved,filled with the Spirit, and delivered. So great is ou rGod!A man, who came to our tent without a shi rt , was

saved, filled with. the Holy Spirit, and delivered. He isnow preaching.HOW YOU MAY BE FREE

Repent, confess, an d get filled with the Spirit. Takedown the VACANCY sign and put up a sign NO VACANCY. Then when the unclean spirit returns, he willno t find your house empty (Matt. 12:44).Remember th e enemy at this place of desperation

may come in gradually or instantly. After you havegone for months in this condition, Satan may take complete possession while you are at a dap-ce, beer joint,road house, movie, club house, in mixed bathing, in agang fight, or in any other place these spiri ts s tay. I tcan be dur ing an angry fit, a dice game, a drunkennight, or an accident.

Get to a deliverance service quickly. After you aredelivered, quit your old company and stav with God,and His people. 'Get packed full of God's Word, if youwant to keep your freedom.,After Satan comes in he will take every part ofyou; then he will only let you do what he wal1ts vou todo. This brings us to the n ext chapter-POSSESSION.

REV. GRANT: "Come out of this woman, in Jesus'Name, I command you!"DEMON: "I don't have to come out, God. . you.By , I am not coming out. I have morepower than you have. Better men than youhave t ri ed to cast me ou t and could not.I'm surely not coming out fo r you. God .you, ge t away from her. I'll hurt you. hell."REV. GRANT: "Everyone bow your head in r ever -ence." To the spirit: "Go! go where youwant to; bu t you are not staying here!"The woman looked around and said in herown accent. "I'm so tired of this. It's beengoing on ~ long."

REV. GRANT: "Well, if you are, open your mouthwide." She obeyed and began to shout. Shewas FREE, for the f ir st t ime in years . Sheimmediately went to the prayer room. Sev-eral hours later, she was still there praisingGod for what He had done fo r her.
