Launched in 1991,reviving a marathonpreviously organized
on the island, the Gus-tavialoppet (which means"Race of Gustavia" inSwedish) serves as areminder that Saint Barthwas under Swedish rule foralmost 100 years -from 1784
to 1878- before beingreturned to France, its for-mer ruler. The 15th editionof the race was held on Sun-day, November 20. EddyRomil, a 41-year old runnerfrom Guadeloupe, in his firstappearance here, took firstplace and compled the 10kmrace in 31 minutes and 34

A veterinarian, like her husband, Teresabegan running just a yearago: “After having twochildren, I needed sometime to myself, a timewhen I could think.” Run-ning was the answer. Injust one year as a memberof the Sint Maarten Run-ner club, she has already
participated in five races:“the endomorphines thatare released when runningmake for a happy person. Iam what is called a “runaddict,” she noted at theend of the 10km race. What does she think of theGustavialoppet ? “Abeautiful race, a lot ofsupport, a beautiful atmos-phere, and great views ofthe mountains and the sea.An absolutely perfectday!” She will most likelybe on the starting lineagain next year.

I.B.C h a r n e a u(you’ll haveto ask her
what the initials I.B. standfor…) hails from ShortHills, NJ. She knew aboutSaint Barth from an earlyage, as her parents had beenvisiting the island since the1970s, staying at EmeraudPlage. They had heard aboutthe island from celebratedchef Craig Claiborne. “Foodand chefs have always beenin my life,” says I.B. Littledid she know that one dayshe would be running arestaurant and gourmet delion the island. “I came here for thefirst time in 1986,” I.B. recalls.Although she stayed at the TropicalHotel, she went to Emeraud Plage tomeet its manager, Genevieve Nouy.“My mother suggested I go to meether as she was great and we were thesame age.” A friendship developedand I.B. joined Nouy and a group offriends for dinner every night. Thereshe met Bertrand Charneau, whosefamily owned another island hotel, LeVillage St Jean, and her fate wassealed. One year later she moved toSaint Barth and helped Bertrand withthe family business. “I had neverthought about running a hotel or arestaurant,” she admits. “But it worksfor me. I am a people person, and I
adore food.” Having lived in Francefor a year, she also had the advantageof speaking French. In 1995, afterhurricane Luis swept across theisland, I.B. opened a deli close to thebeach in St Jean. “There was a greatdeli in my home town,” she confides.“As an American I thought the islandneeded a new sandwich place.” Heridea turned into Kiki è Mo, an Italian-inspired gourmet deli, with take-outand catering (it is named after her twosons, Keefer and Marlon). Althoughdancing was I.B.’s first love, she tookto catering and event planning as ifborn to it. “It’s very creative,” shesays. “Like being back in the theatre.Food is a real art and every chef is anartist.” At the hotel’s restaurant, La
Terrazza, I.B. creates a tra-ditional Thanksgiving din-ner every year, with spe-cial twists to the menuadded by chef DominqueJoussemet, who is nowstarting his third season. Inaddition to the traditionalturkey, their menu rangesfrom sweet potato pureewith ginger and chestnutsroasted in maple syrup topecan cinnamon tart andpumpkin bavarois, not tomention the local lobsterstew to start things off, andsuch touches as homemadecranberry sauce with
oranges and a splash of Remy Martincognac and a special stuffing that I.B.and Dominique concoct together. This Thanksgiving dinner for 55draws a mix of locals and tourists, and seconds are always available.“Seconds are an important part ofThanksgiving,” proclaims I.B. whoadds that the same meal is availableas take out from Kiki è Mo, or pre-pared right in your own home.“Thanksgiving is my favorite holi-day,” she says. “Having it at therestaurant keeps me from beinghomesick at this time of year. Francewas too far from the States, the cul-ture, and the language. In Saint Barth,I can stay in touch in a way I couldnever do in France.”

In keeping with itsmany VIP visitors,Saint Barth now has a
new airline to help whiskthem to the island in style.Tradewind Aviation hasbeen authorized sinceMarch 21, 2005 to fly inand out of Gustav III air-port in Saint Jean. ThisAmerican charter compa-ny is based at the Water-bury-Oxford Airport inConnecticut and also oper-ates out of New York, aswell as St. Croix in theAmerican Virgin Islands.Specialized in businesstravel, Tradewind Aviationhas a fleet of 13 planes, ofwhich four (and soon six)are based in St. Croix dur-ing the winter. All of theplanes they fly in theCaribbean — Pilatus PC-12, Cessna Grand Caravan, BeechSuper King Air 200—are less thanfive years old and are outfitted with“executive interiors:” a spacious cab-in, leather seats, DVD players, etc. They are also equipped with the latestin safety systems: TAWS anticolli-sion, Tcas, GPS, Nexrad, radar, andStormscope to pick up on bad weath-er. “We made a vow to only flyplanes that we would let our ownfamilies fly in,” explains David Zara,vice-président and principal of thecompany, during a visit to Saint-Barth. All of the flights have two
pilots aboard, and all the pilots holdan ATP (airline transport pilot)license. They also train regularly onflight simulators to keep their skillssharp. In the United States,Tradewind flies charters and launchedthe Nantucket Shutle, a flight thattakes just one hour from the otherVIP island of Nantucket to New York, without the inconveniences of a regu-lar flight. The idea to fly to Saint Barth wasinstigated by clients of the companywho asked if Tradewind could alsoserve the Caribbean. “So that’s whatwe did,” says Zara, who admits that
the French Civil Aviation regulationsare quite tough, but proved to be “justand fair,” as was Mayor BrunoMagras who welcomed them warmly.Today the company operates alongthe same lines as other regional air-lines and charter companies, offeringcharter flights throughout theCaribbean: Saint Barth as well asMustique, the Dominican Republic,Antigua, Turk & Caïcos, Nevis, andthe Virgin Islands. According to thestyle of airplane that one charters, theflying time from Puerto Rico toSaint-Barth can be as short as 40 min-utes aboard a Pilatus or about onehour with a Cessna Grand Caravan. One can save quite a bit of time, andas company president and principalEric Zipkin hopes, “this will allow usto attract new clients who would liketo spend the weekend in Saint Barth!”

40years, then nomore oil. 40years, and if the
consumption of this “blackgold” continues at thesame pace, oil will havedisapeared from underthe surface of the earth, plunging a great deal ofthe planet into an ener-gy crisis. Add to thatthe consequences of ourenergy use on the envi-ronment, and its role inglobal warming: wehave no choice but toreduce our energy con-sumption as quickly aspossible. Saint-Barthplays its own role inthis problem, as theisland uses an average oftwice as much electricityas the rest of France. Backin 2003, the EDF (FrenchElectical Production Com-pany) ran a campaign toreduce the annual increaseof 12% (compared to just1% in metropolitanFrance). Things stabilizedfor a time, but this year theincrease has jumped again.
A new trend that indicatesan increase of 10% by theend of 2005. This issomewhat problematic asthe level of productionoften reaches saturation,
especially at the peak oftourist season. Good con-sumers, but bad students!Yet the situation is nottotally grim. Even ifSaint Barth is energy-hungry compared to therest of France, the islandis trying to learn how toconserve energy. Consid-erable efforts are beingmade to introduce solar
energy, and what was notpossible in that area afew years ago is possibletoday: at least threeswimming pools are heat-ed by solar panels, prov-
ing that it works. Thatis true for hot waterheaters as well: theGuanahani now has 22panels that heat 3000liters of water by thesun. The Eden Rockhas a system that pro-vides up to 1000 litersof sun-heated water. And they are not thefirst: both FrançoisPlantation and VillageSaint-Jean have usedsolar energy for a few
years, as does the laundryin Petit Cul de Sac. Moreand more villas are put-ting in single or centralsolar units. Combined, these intiatives can makea difference in terms ofenergy consumption. Andso far, they are onlybeing used for the pro-duction of hot water!
The plans to lay a high-speed fiber-optic cable linking Guadeloupe tothe worldwide Internet network
via a gateway in San Juan, Puerto Ricovia Saint Martin (with a spur to SaintBarth), are still underway despite delaysto the initial timeline. Scheduled to beput into place by the end of October, thecable will not be laid until early 2006,according to information obtained lastweek from the Global Carribean Net-work. This is the company hired by theConseil Regional, the motor behind theproject, in November 2004 to install andmaintain the digital cable. Global Car-ribean Network reports that the 850
kilometers of cable needed to linkGuadeloupe to Puerto Rico are stillbeing fabricated at Alcatel Cable, aworld leader on the optical networkmarket, located in Calais in the north ofFrance. The cable should be on its wayby the end of the year via one of Alca-tel’s cable ships and delivered to Glob-al Caribbean Network for installationbetween the islands. This cable, with aoptimal capacity of 120 gigabits persecond, is intended to be large enoughto handle 7.5 million telephone calls atthe same time, as well as satisfy theneeds of 4.8 million Internet sub-scribers at 512 k/bits.

STOLEN CARFLIPS OVERIt was around seveno’clock in the morningon November 11 when aman (that the policewere already looking for)stole a car that wasparked in front of ahouse in Vitet. But thethief, who was possiblydrunk— witnesses hadseen him before the theftwith a bottle of beer inhis hand– didn’t get toofar. Just 300 metersdown the road, the carflipped over onto its roofand got stuck between awall and a house. Theresident of the house wasonly able to catch aglimpse of the thief, whowas apparently notinjured in the accident,as he ran away. The car,a Suzuki Yaris, wastotaled, and had to betowed away. An investi-gation is under way.
A WOMANOVERBOARD!A woman found herselfswimming in the watersof the port before shewas recovered by the twomen aboard the boat onwhich she was sailingfrom Saint Martin. Sheclaims she was throwninto the water, but thethree other people on theboat insist she had fallenherself. The four people– two couples — had setsail a few hours earlierfrom Saint Martin on thesailboat in the directionof Saint Barth. Theambiance was prettystressful, and a fightbroke out during thecrossing. This was thecause, according to theplaintiff, of her fall intothe water.

Fellow journalistCécile Lucot loveswords. In addition to
her role as a journalist, shehas recently become a pub-lisher as well, taking overthe reins of Editions duLatanier. Created in 1988,this local publishing compa-ny is known for its booksabout Saint-Barth, Saint-Martin, and the LesserAntilles. Among their bet-ter-known volumes arethose about the flora andfauna of the West Indies, both on land and sea, aswell as a book about the tra-ditional architecture of SaintBarth (of which severalexamples still exist). In1988, Editions du Latanieralso published the bilingual
French-English “ode” to theisland, “History of SaintBarth,” created by StanislasDefize. This Belgian artist, who discovered the islandin the late 1970s after atransatlantic crossing on asailboat, wrote the wordsand painted the magnificent
watercolors that illustratethis informative book aboutthe history of the “rock.” Infact it was this book thatinspired Cécile to take overthe publishing operation:“The book had been out ofprint for six years, yet therewas still a demand for it.Something had to be doneabout it.” That something isa second edition of “Historyof Saint Barth,” in both thetraditional soft back version,as well as a deluxe hardback edition. Nothing waschanged, except updates tothe author’s bio. Cécile hasalso republished “History ofSaint Martin,” also createdin the same style by Stanis-las Defize. Other projectssoon to follow.
“History of Saint Barth” isfor sale in all the bookstores,as well as souvenir stores(Quichenotte, Loulou, Colibri)and in the boutiques at theGuanahani, Christopher, andIlse de France hotels. “Histoire of Saint Martin” isfor sale in Saint Martin.
