MABEL WATSON: FERRYHILL’S NEWEST CENTENARIAN
Ferryhill’s new Mayor, Councillor Peter Atkinson carried out his inaugural presentation on Thursday 3rd June when he was on hand to present a lovely bunch of flowers, on behalf of Ferryhill Council to Mabel Watson who was celebration reaching 100 years old.Mabel was born in Middlesbrough and lived on Teesside, moving to Eston in 1960. She married her husband William, a steelworker, in 1934 at St. Stephen’s Church in Middlesbrough. The couple had 3 daughters, 4 grand children and 5 great grand children. Unfortunately, William died in 1987.During the war, she worked as a seamstress in Price’s clothing factory, which later became John Colliers. She stayed there until she retired in 1972.Mabel moved into Deanhurst Nursing Home Ferryhill 18 month ago to be near her family, who live in Ferryhill.Bright as a button Mabel, doesn’t drink or smoke and has an amazing memory. She celebrated the wonderful occasion with a party. She was surrounded by friends and family, some of which had travelled from Greece, Dorset, London and Buckinghamshire to be by her side. One special guest present was Jess, the dog who visits Mabel everyday.Cllr Peter Atkinson enjoyed meeting Mabel and said that he hoped to connect with as many members of the community as possible, he said, “As Mayor I hope to go to many more events in Ferryhill such as this one. “I’ve set up a facebook page called Ferryhill Mayor and a facebook group called the Mayor of Ferryhill where I’ll be updating from events I attend and I’ll try to keep people informed of what I’m doing as Mayor throughout my year. “The charities I have decided to support are Nicole Agar
and the Royal British Legion. The mayor said that he has various fundraising events that he would like to help organise, he said, “I have a number of activities that I’d like to do, such as tombola’s, car boot sales and, of course, charity walks and, dare I say, swims as well. I intend to organise a quiz night, race night and whatever I can to raise monies for my nominated charities.
“If anyone has items that they would let me have for car boot sales or tombola’s please contact me through the Town Hall and I’ll be only to pleased to call round and collect.”If you would like to arrange for a visit from the mayor please ring the Town Council offices on 01740 652157 with the details, alternatively you could email the relevant details to [email protected].

DRUNK IN A POLICE CAROn the evening of 4th March Gavin Colin Ruth telephoned the police telling them that he was in a van but didn’t know his whereabouts. Police officers found him sitting at the driver’s seat of one of Durham Constabulary’s own vehicles, which was parked at the entrance to the police station in Church Lane, Ferryhill. The 35 year old, from High Street, West Cornforth was clearly under the influence of alcohol and had suffered cuts to his hand but had little
recollection of events. The vehicle’s offside window was shattered and door damaged, whilst inside several panels had been ripped off and the dashboard damaged, valued in total at over £500.Ruth, who is well known to the Probation Service, is currently serving two community orders with supervision, has recently undergone eight weeks treatment for alcohol problems in West Park Hospital and is participating in the Community Domestic Violence Programme.
The defendant currently lives with his parents and is also receiving help with housing issues. He is deemed not suitable for unpaid work as part of any sentence and has over £500 in outstanding fines. Magistrates decided that the current probation orders should continue but wrote off previous costs and fines except for a £65 compensation order. They then imposed a further compensation order of £365 payable to Durham Constabulary.

Dear Editor,Regarding the letter in this week’s Chapter (issue 473) regarding Polish workers. They are here to install intricate equipment that has
been designed and made in Poland. As soon as the installation of this equipment has been completed they will return home to Poland and once
the Dalkia site is ready for operation there will be 50 jobs created for UK Residents.Councillor Brian Avery, Durham County Council.
FILM CLUB
On Friday 28th May, 2010, a new initiative was set up in West Cornforth for the local youths of the village. The local police and youth workers from No. 66 Drop-in Centre have been working together to bring Filmclub to the village to give young
people a place to meet their friends, socialise and watch an up to date film. Avatar was the first film to be shown and following the good attendance another film is planned to be shown soon. Please check out Spennymoor’s Facebook/Twitter site for the next film.
CHRISTIAN AID WALKThe well known and popular TV presenter John Grundy will be taking part in a walk to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the North East whilst also supporting the work of a well known charity. He will be joined by The Revd Carole Lloyd and Jenny Cameron Churchwarden of St Aidan’s Church, who are also taking steps to fight poverty by taking part in the Bede’s Way Sponsored Walk on Saturday 12th June. The walk follows a route between the twin monastic sites of St Peter’s Church, Monkwearmouth, and St Paul’s Church, Jarrow, and the pair will be raising money to support the work of Christian Aid.Carole has said that she is doing the walk with the twin aims of improving her fitness by having to do some extra walking to get fit enough to walk the 12 miles and also to support a good cause.Christian Aid is involved in fighting poverty in the world’s poorest communities. Their
work is important because they not only respond to emergencies, such as the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile but also because they stay for the long term. They are also involved in campaigning for a more just society.Carole also said that she was looking forward to the event despite not being used to walking quite so far in one day because there would be a great sense of camaraderie amongst the participants, many of whom will be in the same situation. There will also be a family friendly 4 mile walk at the same time and both walks will conclude with a short celebratory service with regional church leaders including the Bishop of Jarrow, the Right Reverend Mark Bryant, The Revd Ruth Gee and The Revd Leo Osborn both Methodist District Chairs who are also taking part in the walk. All sponsorship money raised will go towards Christian Aid’s work of fighting poverty in the
poorest communities around the world. The Rev Lloyd, vicar of St Aidan’s, in Chilton, St Helen’s, in Kelloe, and St Mary’s in Coxhoe, said, “This will be a great event because it’s an opportunity to get fit whilst supporting a good cause.“As a church we feel it’s important to support Christian Aid’s work in developing countries.“Their work is important because they don’t just respond to emergencies but fund ongoing work to help people out of poverty.“I’m not used to walking 12 miles at a time so this sponsored walk really will be a challenge for me. Nevertheless, I’m looking forward to the event and the camaraderie.”There will also be a family-friendly, four-mile walk - and both events will be finished in time for England’s World Cup match against the USA.If you would like to sponsor Carole and Jenny please get in touch with Carole Lloyd on 01388 720243.

FERRYHILL LEADS THE WAYFerryhill Town Council is celebrating after becoming the first town council in the region to install photovoltaic solar panels to their roof space. After receiving grants of £5,000 from Durham County Council’s Alternative Energy Scheme and £8,042 from the Low Carbon Buildings Programme Phase 2, the town council were able to employ local company, Cleaner Air Solutions to carry out works to install 22 roof mounted panels. It is expected that the solar panels will make a significant contribution to the town councils annual electricity requirements, saving the council money while importantly reducing the number of carbon emissions being released into the environment.Ferryhill Town Council
Portfolio Holder, Councillor Bernie Lamb said, “Receiving grants and being able to install solar panels to the Town Hall roof is excellent news. The panels will generate electricity which will save the town council money on their electric bills while also helping to save the environment by reducing the number of carbon
emissions being released”.A performance monitor on display in the Town Hall provides a running total of exactly how much energy the town council has saved. Anyone interested in this information can view the monitor which is positioned in the reception area at Ferryhill Town Hall.

FLOWER FESTIvALOver the Spring Bank Holiday weekend St Aidan’s Church in Chilton hosted a Flower Festival to celebrate 80 years since the completion of the present building. Later this year, in November, St Aidan’s will also be celebrating 110 years of Anglican worship in Chilton, the first service being held in a small terrace house in South View. The festival, entitled ‘Now, Then and Tomorrow’, celebrated the past, present and future of Chilton. The first display in the baptistery depicted the re-building of St Aidan’s after the fire of 12th March 1928. Also remembered was the day that Amy Johnson’s unscheduled stop at Chilton to refuel her plane at Oates’ Garage when flying north to Scotland to visit her fiancée, Jim Mollinson, a day which Kathleen Oates remembers. Her brother, Alan was just a baby at the time and was quickly taken out of the bath, wrapped up in a towel and the family hurried down to the garage, where their father filled up the tank: probably one of the most unusual and memorable incidents in his life. Other displays from the past recalled the level crossing, the variety of shops in Chilton and the Coal merchants. Around the war memorials was a reminder of the conflicts of the past and present, giving
much food for thought.Display in the chancel were to celebrate the purpose and reason for the Church’s existence, to worship God our creator and redeemer, and to celebrate the ministry of many people in the church over the years.Coming up to date the Newly re-formed 1st Chilton Cubs, the Chat and Craft Group which meets each Monday afternoon in the Church Hall, Melanie Edmenson’s Dance Classes and the Town Square at Chrismas. It was good to see other displays, which look more to the future of Chilton and the potential for growth and new life in our community. The display representing the new
promised Skatepark is shown in the photograph and this is much looked forward to by many of our young people and the new Biomass power plant was also represented in the arrangements. Many of the arrangements were sponsored by members of the community and the organisers would like to thank all those who contributed in any way. Thanks to the work of Kathleen Edmenson who co-ordinated the Flower Festival and all those who helped in many different ways over £1,000.00 has been raised to support the continued presence of St Aidan’s in the community as a place of worship and as a resource.
