In “The Kominsky Method,” an eight-episode half hour series premiering Fri-day, Nov. 16, the “Wall Street” Oscarwinner stars as Sandy Kominsky, a for-mer actor in the autumn of his yearswhose career and life has seen its ups anddowns, including a divorce. Now a re-spected acting coach in Los Angeles, he

teaches his craft to a group ofneurotic, eccentric and occasion-ally clueless young thesps, allthe while trying to keep hisharsher comments to himself.

His constant companion is hisagent Norman (Oscar winnerAlan Arkin, “Argo”), a debon-naire though irascible sort wholike Sandy is navigating his lateryears and the issues therein. There is also Sandy’s daughter,Mindy (Sarah Baker, “Big LittleLies”), who works with him athis acting school; and a possiblelove interest, Lisa (NancyTravis, “Last Man Standing”),just coming off a divorce of herown.

The series is the brainchild ofChuck Lorre (“Two and a HalfMen,” “The Big Bang Theory”),on whose relationship with his

Michael Douglas returns to series TVin Netflix’s ‘The Kominsky Method’

By George DickieIn his first TV series since “Streets of

San Francisco” more than 40 years ago,Michael Douglas shows off formidablecomedic chops as an aging acting coachwhose life didn’t quite turn out asplanned in a dramedy premiering thisweek on Netflix.

own agent the series is based. Like manyof his other series, it boasts crisp writingand an enjoyable chemistry between itstwo leads that really makes the series go.

“One of the joys of something like‘The Kominsky Method’ for me,” Dou-glas says, “is I’m not inherently a come-dian but I love comedy. I’m always tryingto do it so this is a real chance to work forsome of the best in terms of Chuck Lorreand work on your comedic chops. ...Alan’s great. He’s got good comic chopsand I’m able to learn a lot from him.”

Also attractive for Douglas was thefact that “The Kominsky Method” is astreaming series, which like with moviesis shot without commercial breaks.

“You say it’s a half-hour comedy but itcould be 25 minutes long or 35 minuteslong, each episode,” he explains. “Sothere was a lot of creative freedom and itsort of reminded me of what feature film-making was like back in the ‘70s and‘80s, a golden time for me when (it) wasmore creatively driven rather than corpo-rately driven.

“So I said, ‘Yeah, where do I sign on?’” he continues. “And of course, AlanArkin is a wonderful actor, my co-star,and so I just had really, really good mate-rial. It was a really wonderful script — lit-tle short scripts, like short little films, sortof like when I did ‘Streets’ but no com-mercials. So it was a good experience allthe way around.”

SAFETY DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASONMany stores in our area have already started advertising and sellinggifts for the holiday season. As that season approaches, it’s time toreview some tips for keeping your holiday packages safe and secure.Delivery service vehicles catch the attention of thieves and offer thema possible crime of opportunity when packages are delivered. Pack-age thieves almost invariably seek to carry out their crimes quickly, expending minimal effort, while at the same time attempting to avoiddetection. The following tips are being offered to prevent residentsfrom being the victim of package thefts and to help in identifyingperpetrators:• Request a drop-off time and date when you will be at home to acceptthe delivery.• Use a tracking number to follow your package.• Request that your package delivery requires a recipient signature.• Utilize and prominently display your home security system; includ-ing video cameras, doorbell cameras, and motion-sensitive lighting.Thieves who are aware that they are being observed and/or recordedwill likely avoid these locations.• Utilize email or text notifications and alerts regarding the status ofyour delivery.• Consider purchasing a locking parcel delivery box that can be bolteddown or otherwise secured.

• Consider in-store delivery or have packages deliv-ered to a reputable package pickup location, such asAmazon Locker or other business that accepts pack-age deliveries for residents.• Request that the delivery service leaves your pack-ages at a side door. Back door, enclosed porch orother area where the package will be out of sight.• If permissible, have your packages delivered to yourworkplace• Have your packages delivered to the home of a relative or neighborwho will be there to accept the delivery.• Ask a trusted neighbor to keep a watch out for your packages andsafeguard them until you can retrieve the delivery.• If your packages do not arrive as scheduled, contact the sender assoon as possible to determine if there is a delay in the delivery.• When you go shopping, please lock your car and bring your keyswith you. Do not leave the car doors unlocked. Do not leave the carwith the motor still running. Do not leave your keys in the car. To report package theft or suspicious behavior, please contact theBayonne Police Department without delay at 201-858-6900, or call911 in an emergency. If we all follow good practices, we can have a safe and secure holidayseason.

JEMMA PAWN COMPANYWho is Jemma Pawn Company

and what do they have to offer you?Brian Markey the owner of JemmaPawn Company, established his busi-ness in 1986. This business hasgrown as a premiere loan represen-tative and is officially approved bythe New Jersey Department of Bank-ing. Just as Bank of America, Chaseand other recognized names in bak-ing, licensed pawn brokers are regu-lated by The New Jersey Departmentof Banking. As many contemporaryAmericans have found out during therecession, a crisis that affected a largepercentage of the population in theearly 80’s, pawnbrokers can and willhelp you. Pawn broking is a stable in-stitution in time of financial stressand misfortune, lack of sufficientfunds to open a small business orloss of a regular dependable income. The records show many peopleturned down by the banks werehelped by a reputable pawnbrokerand are now back on their feet againbecause of their timely decision to in-vestigate the opportunities thatJemma offers you.

Pawn broking, is a professionoften branded unfairly by gossip andsensationalized movie plots, and thispawnbroker wants to set the recordstraight. Jemma Pawn Company hasa 95% redemption rate! What doesthat mean? It is a verification that theitem or items people bring to them ascollateral on their loan are redeemedby the customer prior to the loans ex-piration date. There are no creditchecks and no application form tofill out. Jemma offers you same dayservice. An example of their excel-lence service could be: you bring ina Rolex watch worth $20,000 topawn and you need $7,000 - you willhave same day service. Yes, you willwalk out with seven thousand dol-lars, cash in hand. And you will nothave to wait weeks worrying if youhave qualified.

Jemma Pawnbrokers follow the

tradition of an ancient professiongoing back 3,000 years to China andancient Greece and Rome. Poor peo-ple would come to the pawn brokersand find them a ready source of

money to help them out during timesof failed crops, bad weather, etc. Bet-ter still, the government kept theirfinger on the pulse of the professionby setting limits to interest chargedand guaranteeing the pawned prop-erty would be available to the cus-tomer till the redemption of the loan, which usually extended to threeyears. Jemma Pawn Company willreturn the original item of collateralto its owner provided they are faith-ful in paying back their loan, plus anyincurred interest till the obligation istotally met. And to reiterate, 95% ofall Jemma clientele, pay back theirloans in the stipulated period!

Rest assured, there is no shame inpawning items. You will find you arein good company when you checkthe records. Pope Leo X, in 1515gave his official seal of approval topawnbrokers. The Pope pawned hisown furniture and jewelry to supporthis love of the arts and Michelan-gelo’s Sistine ceiling is but one of theresults of the Pope’s support.

Many people ask: What do those

three balls signify outside pawnshops? There is a heart-warmingstory about the familiar insigniaabove the pawn shop establishments(the three golden balls). This tradition

is generally attributed to Saint Nico-las who stopped a man on his way togive his three daughters as collateralof a debt he incurred. The saint con-vinced the man to substitute threebags of gold in place of his daughtersand generously gave him the gold -immediately.

So hopefully we have answeredsome of the frequently asked ques-tions and addressed any fears con-cerning dealing with a pawnbroker!Come in and visit Jemma Pawn.Brian has a staff of seasoned and pro-fessionally trained individuals whohave specialties in jewelry, which in-clude a great selection of watches. Also, antiques, musical instruments,as well as gold, silver and platinumare here. No seedy characters behindthe counters! Jemma Pawn Com-pany is covered by the New JerseyBanking Law.

Hours of operation are fivedays a week. Monday, Tuesday,Thursday, Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.Closed Wednesdays and Sundays.

Needless to say,Hana and her crew — including hydrol-ogist Javier Delgado (Alberto Ammann),physician Amelie Durand (ClémentinePoidatz), Lt. At first blush, Hurrelle comes off as afirst-class jerk, but Hephner explains he’smerely a guy doing a job in the hopes ofmaking a little money for his wife andyoung daughter.

WOLFGANG PUCK’S KITCHENFall Classics for Thanksgiving

By Wolfgang Puck“What’s the secret to a great Thanksgiving

dinner?” With the fall feast almost here, I’mhearing that question often right now as peoplebegin to think about what they’re going to cook.My first answer is the same one you’ll hear

experts in all kinds of fields give about anymajor project: Plan ahead! So I suggest that, ifyou haven’t already, start thinking now aboutwhat you’re going to cook for Thanksgiving.I also suggest that you put as much thought

into other courses of the meal as you do for theturkey. Often, when people think back to theirmost memorable Thanksgiving meals, the ap-petizers, sides, and desserts come to mind be-fore the main course. (Besides, in next week’scolumn I’ll share with you a great, out-of-the-ordinary way to prepare a turkey.)So, I propose you plan to begin Thanksgiving

dinner with my Fresh Pumpkin and OysterSoup, served in a pumpkin shell! It will makea big impression, yet is fairly simple to prepare.Start now so you can

make sure to get theright ingredients. For thepumpkin itself, look fora sweet cooking variety, sometimes labeled a“sugar pumpkin” or “piepumpkin,” or for anyother good-tastingspherical, hard-shelledwinter squash, such asKabocha or Hubbard. You’ll need one weigh-ing 6 to 8 pounds for 6servings. If you havemore guests, just buy more pumpkins, makesure you have a baking pan and serving platterlarge enough to hold them, and puree the soupin batches. (And if the pumpkins or othersquashes are odd sizes or unattractive, followthe recipe as directed but serve the soup in yournicest tureen.)As for the oysters, buy them from the best

seafood shop you can find, choosing only thosethat are absolutely fresh, with tightly closedshells. I prefer smaller varieties such as the ex-cellent Kumamotos, but if only larger ones areavailable you can cut up the meat after cookingand shelling. While the recipe calls for cookingthe oysters in their shells, if you find it moreconvenient you can ask the market to shuckthem for you, or even buy a jar of the already-shucked fresh oysters that some markets sell;just poach them for a few minutes with thewine, celery, and shallots as directed in therecipe. For more convenient Thanksgiving planning,

feel free to do some of the work in advance.Make the croutons and, once they’re com-pletely cooled, store in an airtight container.Cook and puree the soup, and poach the oys-ters, several hours ahead, too, storing them inthe refrigerator and then, before serving, gentlyreheating the soup and then adding the oystersto warm through before serving. Here’s to a happy Thanksgiving!

FRESH PUMPKIN AND OYSTER SOUPServes 6

2 tablespoons unsalted butter 6 slices French bread, each about 1/2 inch thick, cut into small cubes1 cooking pumpkin, 6 to 8 pounds

1 pint heavy cream, plus extra if necessary1 teaspoon fresh thyme leavesSaltFreshly ground white pepper1 cup dry white wine1/2 cup finely chopped organic celery1/4 cup finely chopped shallots6 fresh oysters, shells thoroughly scrubbed and rinsed cleanCayenne pepperFresh lemon juiceMelt the butter in a skillet over medium-low

heat. Add the bread and saute, stirring fre-quently, until golden brown, 7 to 10 minutes.Transfer to a bowl and set aside.Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.Meanwhile, using a sharp, serrated knife,

carefully cut off the top of the pumpkin, takingcare as well not to pierce the shell in otherplaces. With a large, sharp-edged spoon, scrapeout the seeds and strings.Fold a clean dishtowel and place it in the bot-

tom of a roasting pan large and deep enough tohold the pumpkin. Place the pumpkin shell onthe towel. Bring a kettle of water to a boil.

In a saucepan, bring thecream to a boil. Carefullypour enough cream intothe pumpkin shell to fillit almost to the top. Stir inthe thyme and salt andpepper to taste. Open thepreheated oven and, using a potholder or ovenmitt, pull out the shelfand put the pan on it.Pour enough boilingwater into the pan tocome just over 1 inch up

the side of the pumpkin. Slide the shelf into theoven, taking care to avoid sloshing.Bake until the pumpkin’s flesh is soft when

probed from the inside with the tip of a small, sharp knife, about 50 minutes. (Be careful notto puncture the shell.)Meanwhile, put the wine, celery, and shallots

in a saucepan large enough to hold the oystersin a single layer. Add the oysters, cover, andbring to a boil over medium-high heat, steam-ing until they have opened, 5 to 10 minutes. Re-move the oysters to a plate or bowl and removethe meat from their shells, setting it aside anddiscarding the shells. Return the juices to thepan. Line a fine sieve with cheesecloth, placeover a clean bowl, and strain the juices, settingthem aside.Carefully pour or ladle the cream from the

pumpkin into a food processor or blender, working in batches if necessary. With a large,sharp-edged spoon, scoop out the pumpkinflesh, leaving a 1/2-inch shell. Add the pumpkinflesh and strained oyster liquid to the cream andblend until smooth. Transfer the puree to asaucepan, bring to a boil, and cook over lowheat until thickened and the flavors have con-centrated, 15 to 20 minutes. Season to taste withcayenne, lemon juice, salt, and white pepper.Add the reserved oysters, cutting any large onesinto 3 or 4 pieces, and heat for about 30 secondslonger. To serve, place folded napkins or tea towels

on a platter to anchor the pumpkin. Place thepumpkin shell on top. Ladle the soup into theshell. At the table, ladle the soup into warmedbowls and garnish with the reserved croutons.
