Different cultures – different pets

Dogs, cats, birds and sh are the world’s favourite pets, but people in different countries have got different ideas about pets. In Arab countries, for example, dogs aren’t popular because people think that they are dirty. And in Africa very few people keep animals as pets.

The Inuits live in northern Canada. They keep bear cubs, foxes and baby seals as pets.

Another example of an unusual pet is the Madagascar hissing cockroach. It’s quite big, clean and it doesn’t bite. It makes a loud noise too. Madagascar hissing cockroaches are good pets for children.

In China and Japan, one of the most popular pets is small and very noisy. Many people there have pet crickets.

In Britain, about 50% of homes have got a pet. Almost six million people have got a dog and ve million have got a cat. Other popular British pets are budgies (budgerigars), hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits and gold sh.
