El and La both mean the in English. In Spanish, they are used to indicate which nouns are masculine and which nouns are feminine. All nouns in Spanish, even things that are not living,
are either one or the other. This will be discussed in more detail later.

Unidad 2 Lección 2: El Género de los Sustantivos (1) The Gender of Nouns
Nouns in Spanish, like English, can be people, places or things. In Spanish, though, nouns have gender. This means that every noun is either masculine or feminine. In most cases, it
has to do with the letter at the end of the noun. It does NOT have any connection to what the word means.
There is no way to really know if a noun is masculine or feminine. You just need to learn its gender along with the noun.
Here are some general rules that apply to the gender of nouns in Spanish. Remember,
though, that not everything follows the rules!
Rule 1 : Most nouns that end in o are masculine. Most nouns that end in a are feminine.
Write an M next to each masculine noun and an F next to each feminine noun.

Rule 2 : Most nouns that end in ción, sión, tad, dad and umbre are feminine.
Ejemplos con ión: lección, estación, televisión, nación, coversación Ejemplos con tad/dad: libertad, verdad, universidad, personalidad
Ejemplos con umbre: legumbre, lumbre
Rule 3 : Most words that end in ma or pa from Greek rather than Lat in roots are masculine.
Ejemplos: mapa, problema, sistema, clima, poema, idioma

Write an M next to each masculine noun and an F next to each feminine noun.
