Celebrating 800 years of Heritage... St Margaret’s Church on Abbey Green is a Grade 1 listed building and is all that remains of Barking Abbey, which was once one of the largest nunneries in the country.

Founded in 1215 St Margaret’s enjoys a rich heritage...

Did you know that the explorer Captain James Cook was married in this church in 1762 and that prison reformer Elizabeth Fry is buried in the Quaker burial grounds in nearby North Street?

Barking’s fishing heritage is engrained in the fabric of the church. A beautiful stained glass window designed by George Jack, a contemporary of William Morris, can be found in the Fishermen’s Chapel.

To find out more why not visit our Café and Heritage Hub or book up a free guided tour! We would be delighted to tell you more about the rich heritage of St Margaret’s Church.
