This year’s theme is “Dig into Reading.” The program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Johnson County Library’s main meeting room for six weeks. We will kick off program with a hot dog BBQ beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18.

Sessions will be divided up into age groups, ranging from pre-K to fifth grade (the grade the children will attend this fall). More information about those groups and the times they will attend the summer reading program will be available at a later date.

We’re also holding our annual Art in Bloom fund-raiser to support the program. Last year local artists painted flowerpots and we auctioned them off to raise about $1,200. This year artists and staff will put their work on display in mid-April. There will be more information posted on our Facebook page, as well as a gallery of photos.

FOR TEENS This year’s theme is “Beneath the Surface.”

The program runs Tuesdays in the Johnson County Library’s main meeting room from 2:30 to 4 p.m., June 4, 11, 18 and 25. Youth who will be in grades 6 through 12 this fall are welcome to take part in the crafts, including treasure boxes, shark tooth necklaces and terrariums. Be sure to grab snacks and enter contests for prizes.

Buddy: How a Rooster Made Me a Family Man, by Brian McGrory (2012)

Review by Steve Rzasa ***** I’m not much for autobiographies. The old ones tend to be too long, and most of the

time I find myself saying “Who cares?” about the details of one person’s life. Trust me, if anyone ever read a biography of me, they’d say the same thing, only they’d yawn more often.

But once I picked up Buddy by Brian McGrory and read the description, I knew I had to finish it. And I could not put it down. Brian is a well-known writer for the Boston Globe, a newsman extraordinaire, who lived the bachelor life with his beloved dog. When his dog falls ill and dies, a series of events lead to his engagement to the veterinarian and his moving in with the family. He must adjust to all the trappings of domestic life in the suburbs.

Oh. And did I mention Buddy is a rooster? A rooster with violent tendencies who despises Brian? Yeah. The feeling is mutual.

This is a light-hearted, well-written read that is both heavy with sarcastic humor (my favorite) and lessons about life. It’s a story of a man who finally grows up, thanks in part to a rooster he’d just as soon have on the dinner plate than sitting next to him on the couch.
