ing, but Marines soon saw the ad-vantage of having their own schools.It wasn't only that Mount Holyokeand Hunter Colleges were over-crowded and st retched beyondreasonable limits by the number ofwomen arriving every week. Therewas a larger motive for movingMCWR schools to Camp Lejeuneand, simply, it was the famed Marineesprit de corps. Camp Lejeune, wherethousands of Marines were prepar-ing for deployment overseas was thelargest Marine training base on theEast Coast and offered sobering op-portunities for the women to observefield exercises and weapons demon-strations, and to see the faces of theyoung men they would free to fight.

Major Hurst, commanding officerof the Marine Detachment at MountHolyoke, understood almost im-mediately the drawbacks of trying toindoctrinate and train Marines insuch patently civilian surroundingsas a college campus. Less than amonth after training began he wroteBrigadier General Waller:

In drawing these up [trainingschedules], I found myself wish-

ing more and more that wecould include some weaponsinstructions, at least pistol, forour women . . . . I have foundthat the women come into theMarine Corps expecting to learnto shoot and I, of course, wouldlike to see them become the firstwomen's reserve in the countryto take up the specialty of theirmen i f Headquarters considersthe idea at all feasible.
