Ortiz added, “A lot of people have the tendency to go to Dodger Stadium because that’s the most well known site. We want to bring awareness that these vaccination sites are available in most areas of Los Angeles.” Pierce is the city’s sixth permanent vaccination super site. Audry Hensley, one of the site’s staff, said that this is a smaller site than Dodger Stadium, telling the Roundup that, “The fire department has kept our numbers low so we could work out some of the kinks in the system. We have more little segments here. As long as the vaccine supply keeps coming, we’ll be able to keep vaccinating people.” Currently, healthcare workers and those over 65 are eligible for vaccinations. As of March 1, teachers and grocery workers will also be eligible. Forty percent of the vaccine designated for school staff in L.A. If you have not yet received your first or second vaccination, do not have an appointment already and are in an eligible group, you can book your appointment at carbonhealth.com. There have been many people frustrated at not being able to book appointments because slots fill up so quickly. The best advice from the city is to keep trying the site at all times of the day, as appointments open up as more doses become available. Pierce College will offer both COVID testing and vaccinations. There is no appointment necessary for testing, but mandatory for vaccinations. Woodland Hills resident John M. Shugrue passed away in January at the age of 81.

Shugrue was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Sepulveda. He graduated from Notre Dame High School. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force, spending four years in Korea at the DMZ. Upon returning home, he joined the American Airlines Ground Crew at LAX. In 1974, John purchased a house in Woodland Hills and lived there until his death. He loved gardening and planted eucalyptus tress along Avenida San Luis, which remain there today.

Shugrue loved his country, proudly displaying the American flag at his home. He was very involved in civic meetings and was a good neighbor to all. During his retirement, he delivered the Valley Vantage newspaper, getting to know his neighbors on Ventura Blvd. who lovingly referred to him as “The Mayor of Woodland Hills.” He will be missed by many friends, his brothers, Bill and Paul Shugrue, his sister, Mary Ann Nardecchia, and many nieces and nephews.

He had a rare ability to appreciate the everyday gifts of nature, like sunrises, and animals, especially dogs. He loved bus trips from Woodland Hills to Santa Monica Pier and putting up Christmas lights.

Internment will be at San Fernando Mission Cemetery to be determined after March because of the pandemic.

Guest Editorial:

Some Myths and Facts About Homelessness

From Lorraine MabbotThe opinions of “Rantz &

Ravz,” in my opinion, were mislabeled as a conservative viewpoint in the offer last month to counter Dennis Zine’s weekly op-ed.

His 2/18/21 prolix submission regarding Federal intervention in homeless issues proves my point perfectly. Did it serve to enlighten or confuse the issue of scope of Federal power? We did find these two pertinent sentences:

“Due to the failures of city and county officials to remedy the crisis, U.S. District Judge David O. Carter has entered the arena to address the homeless population and is attempting to find an effective solution to the situation. Due to a lawsuit, Judge Carter has held hearings and is pressing the City and County to finally address the situation and come up with an effective remedy with some real teeth to impact the continuing and growing homeless population.”

• Isn’t it ironic that the plexiglass protects us from the cashier that has just touched everything that we’re now taking home?

• The Washington Post published the winning submissions to its yearly neologism contest, in which readers are asked to supply alternative meanings for common words. Some of the winners are:

• The women love this, but why? Three men found a bottle with a genie and were each granted one wish. The first man said, “Double my intelligence,” so the genie did. The second man said “Triple my intelligence,” and it was done. The third man said, “Well, quadruple mine!” And the genie said, “I don’t think you’ll be happy but here goes.” So he quadrupled his intelligence and turned him into a woman!

Feuer, actually makes a point for limitations of the federal government (see 10th amendment of US Constitution).

“Is it really appropriate for a court to substitute its judgement for elected officials when it comes to public policy in this city? My own view is that public officials should own that responsibility.”

Yet Zine acquiesced to Federal intervention in saying. “The reason the Federal Court has entered the controversy is that local elected officials have failed over and over to address the tragic situation that is comply out of control.”

A conservative would recognize Federal interference will cost more and invariably restrict

a broader population than needed to address and resolve the issues.

Perhaps the antidote for Zine’s middle-of-the-road diatribe, is in this story my father delighted to relate: On the island of Brevity, the natives hated people who talked too much. They spoke in as few words as possible and expected everyone else to do the same. One year, famine struck the neighboring island of Ontoolong, and the people sent a representative to Brevity to ask for help. The envoy arrived and launched into a description of the havoc brought by the famine, the suffering of the Ontoolong people, and the implications that the disaster had

Letter to the Editor:

By Daniel BrinI am honored that Kathleen

Sterling, the editor of this publication, has asked me to contribute occasional commentaries on local issues. She seems to think I have something to say — and perhaps I do, considering my 50 years of experience as a reporter and editorial writer.

Nevertheless, I don’t want this column to be about myself. I want it to be about facts.

So let’s start with the facts about homelessness, a subject where opinions are too often based on common myths that reflect our personal revulsion instead of an objective appreciation of truth.

Here are some of those myths about homelessness, as well as some facts that refute them:

Myth: Most homeless people are mentally ill.

Fact: While mental illness is a factor in homelessness, it is one factor among many. Decades of epidemiological studies have shown that only about a third of homeless individuals suffer from serious mental illness. A large and growing share of unhoused residents in our community consists of families, seniors, women trying to escape abusive relationships, and others who simply can’t pay the rent.

Our perceptions are often skewed because behaviors of mentally ill people are more likely to draw our attention toward them. Other homeless individuals and families are more successful at staying out of sight.

Myth: Most homeless people are abusers of drugs or alcohol.

Fact: The same epidemiological studies show that about 20 to 40 percent of homeless individuals have a substance abuse issue. As Deborah Padgett, a researcher at New York University, points out,

during the early months of the COVID-19 crisis. Each of these shelters housed approximately 150 individuals, and each was filled to capacity almost immediately, with long waiting lists for others wanting to get in.

Meanwhile, “Three West Valley motels were converted to interim housing, about 300-plus rooms, and all were full within 48 hours with waiting lists,” Tom Booth, a local advocate on homelessness issues, told me.

“There’s an estimate of 1,500 unhoused people, most likely more, in the West San Fernando Valley with only 300 beds that are already filled. Where are people supposed to go?”

That’s a valid question to ask: “Where are people supposed to go?”

I understand the disgust some people may feel at the sight of a human being in filthy clothes sleeping on a sidewalk.

I admit to having those same feelings at times. But if we don’t want to let these folks sleep on the sidewalks, they should at least have a place where they are allowed to sleep — and have a warm shower, a hot meal and the dignity every human being deserves.

In my next column, I will explore some of the other common myths of urban and suburban life in the 21st century. In the meantime, let’s work on responding to our daily reminders of human suffering with a little less revulsion and a little more compassion — and a lot more truth.

“abuse is rarely the sole cause of homelessness and more often is a response to it because living on the street puts the person in frequent contact with users and dealers.”

Myth: Homeless people are not from around here.

Fact: Padgett cites surveys showing 70 to 80 percent of homeless persons are from areas in which they currently reside or lived there for a year or longer before losing their homes.

Myth: They don’t want help. In fact, they prefer this lifestyle.

Fact: If this were true, then there would be no waiting lists for the shelters we have already built.

Here in the San Fernando Valley, several emergency shelters were established in recreation centers — one of them in Woodland Hills Park —

(Continued to page 13)

Our perceptions are often skewed because behaviors of mentally ill people are more likely to draw our attention toward them.

Gelson’s Markets has sold to Pan Pacific International Holdings. Pan Pacific is the parent company of Marukai Corp and Tokyo Central, and operates 638 stores, mostly in Japan, though it’s known for its Don Quijote brand in Hawaii.

Gelson’s is 70 years old and has 27 stores throughout California. There are four locally - Calabasas, Tarzana, Encino, Sherman Oaks and North Hollywood - as well as Westlake and Thousand Oaks. Gelson’s was acquired by TPG Capital in 2014, and the CEO said this deal would offer more growth opportunities .

Fry’s Closes Its DoorsFry’s Electronics has closed all its stores, including the Woodland

Hills location at 6100 Canoga Avenue. The chain was known for its obscure parts and bizarre decor themes (Woodland Hills was “Alice in Wonderland”). An online posting said that the pandemic made it impossible to continue operations. All stores ceased operation this Monday. The Woodland Hills location had already been sold in 2014 to Kaplan Management Company, who plan to develop a mixed-use project including 880 residential units on the 8.8 acre site. Customers who have equipment currently being repaired are asked to email [email protected] to arrange for the return of their equipment. Customers with items needing repair under a performance service contract should call 800-811-1745.

Two Valley Physicians Plead Guilty to Illegal Drug Distribution

Two local physicians have agreed to plead guilty to obtaining an illegal and potentially damaging cancer drug. Dr. Stanley Rossman and Dr. Mark Goldstein operated Hematology Oncology Consultants in West Hills and Van Nuys, and have admitted to obtaining Altuzan - which was meant for foreign markets and not legal in the United States. A warning letter sent to Goldstein from the FDA stated, “Purchasing prescription drug products, such as cancer medications, from foreign or unlicensed suppliers puts patients at risk of exposure to drugs that may be counterfeit, contaminated, improperly stored and transported, ineffective and dangerous.” The Altuzan they purchased from Montana Healthcare Solutions did not contain the medicine’s active ingredient, bevacizumab. Prosecutors have asked for one year of probation and $1.2 million in fines and forfeitures. They also may face suspension or revocation of their medical licenses.

By Theda Kleinhans ReichmanChadwick Boseman was a

gifted young actor whose screen roles ranged from Captain America and the Black Panther to baseball star Jackie Robinson. His final film, just released on Netflix, is Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom in which he costars with Viola Davis.

The film, adapted from August Wilson’s 1982 stage play. deals with a day in the life of the very talented, volatile Ma Rainey, (Viola Davis) a Southern singer known as “the Mother of the Blues.”

She has come to a local studio to record her latest song and wants to stick with her usual arrangement. She also wants her non-talented nephew to do the song’s introduction. However her ambitious young trumpet player Levee (Boseman) wants to tap into a new, jazzier sound for the recording session.

The film begins with Rainey

singing in a tent show in Georgia. When she smiles she reveals a mouth full of shining gold teeth. Soon her career, like her teeth, is luminous.

While singing in a white man’s world, Ma Rainey has been able to establish herself as a vocal star, and as such she expects things to go her way. This is not the case this day, thanks to Boseman.

Davis won an Oscar for her role in August Wilson’s “Fences” and she may again receive an Oscar nod for her portrayal as Ma Rainey. And Boseman could also receive a well deserved Oscar nomination for his role as Levee in his final film.

Boseman was only 43 years when he died of colon cancer on August 28, 2020. He will be missed.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” now streaming on Netflix is rated R for language, sexual content. and brief violence.

By Janey M. RifkinSince the early days of the

pandemic, scientists have sought the elusive answers to why male patients get much sicker than women and why more men, of all ages, die of Covid-19. Hospitals all over the world sought the answer; it took many months to unravel the cause. Researchers in China speculated that men are much more likely to smoke than Chinese women. Behavorial differences are only a small part of the answer.

Why men are sicker and more die is an evasive anomaly! In the journal Science, a breakthrough finding explained that life-threatening pneumonia had antibodies that disable key immune system proteins called interferons. Antibodies are usually the heroes of the immune system defending the body against viruses and other threats. But sometimes the immune system becomes confused and creates “autoantibodies.” Another finding from the same study - 94% of patients with these autoantibodies were men, of all ages.

Interferons serve as the first line of defense against infection. Lab studies show interferons can be suppressed perhaps by the virus itself. For reasons that researchers don’t understand is why the autoantibodies never caused a problem until patients were infected with COVID-19.

Akiko Iwasaki, a professor of immunobiology at the Yale School of Medicine, noted that several genes involved in the

Information & Straight Talk

Why Men of All Ages Are Hit Harder by COVID

immune system’s response to viruses are on the X chromosome. Women have two copies of this chromosome along with two copies of each gene it contains. That gives women a backup in case one copy of a gene becomes defective, Iwasaki said. (Men have only one X chromosome).

Future therapies in hospitals will lead to saving lives. Screening patients for autoantibodies against interferons could help predict which patients are more likely to become very sick or even die. Such testing would take about two days. A pilot study of

98 patients published in Lancet Respiratory Medicine found benefits from an inhaled form of interferon. Patients assigned to receive interferon were more than twice as likely as others to recover enough to resume regular activities.

“This is indeed one of the most important things we’ve learned about the immune system since the start of the pandemic”, said Dr. Eric Topol, executive vice president for research at Scripps Research in San Diego. For the past year, men did not have an even chance.

As each month passes, more individuals are becoming eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.

Starting on March 1, workers in the food and agriculture business, education and childcare service and emergency services/first responders unit will be allowed to get the vaccine.

Registration is required as well as proof of employment in the qualifying sector. While vaccine supplies have been experiencing a shortage, increased production and tiered system of distribution is aiming to make the vaccine more readily available. By Michael BloomAccording to the California

Association of Realtors, the housing market momentum from last year continues in 2021. Jordan Levine, Chief Economist and C.A.R. Vice President, states, “With COVID-19 vaccine continuing to roll out, another fiscal stimulus relief package likely on the way and historically low interest rates, the housing market will continue to thrive. The market outlook is stronger than previously projected as buyer demand continues to outstrip supply, but we do expect the current robust market growth to decelerate later this year as the housing shortage intensifies.”

Single family home sales totaled 484,730 in January, down 4.9% from December and up 22.5% from January 2020. The year-over-year double-digit sales gain was the sixth consecutive and third straight month that sales

Dave Walsh, President of C.A.R, states, “Despite an economy that’s slow to recover, the momentum from late last year continued into January, driven by strong growth in California’s core housing markets, especially in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the higher cost areas experienced the most sales growth. Home prices continued to power through the traditional slow season in January with the largest annual price gain in nearly seven years.”

The statewide median home price in January was $699,000, down 2.5% from December and up 21.7% from January 2020.

In the midst of selling his abandoned Missouri mansion, rapper Nelly (born Cornell Iral Haynes Jr.) has relocated to the gated community of Mountain View Estates in Calabasas.

Renting a six-bedroom, 6,158-square-foot property, it’s a

far cry from the fixer-upper that Nelly is trying to unload. With an expansive living room, dining room, gourmet kitchen, and outdoor cooking areas, there’s hardly a renovation in sight.

Further, the master bedroom hosts a fireplace, double closets,

double bathrooms and a balcony. Outdoors, there is a spa, pool, sport court and putting green. In comparison with his empty Missouri estate that is in need of a total re-haul, this Calabasas property is surely a much-needed upgrade.

When the envoy finally finished his plea, the leader of Brevity said he could not remember the beginning of the envoy’s speech and was hazy about the details that followed. The envoy was sent back empty-handed with a request that someone else be

sent to explain the situation. Ontoolong immediately sent another envoy, urging him to be as brief as possible in his plea for aid. The new envoy appeared before the Brevity delegation, holding empty rice bags in his hand. He spoke only three sentences:

“My people are starving. These bags are empty. Please

fill them.” Then he sat down. The head of the Brevity

delegation immediately ordered the bags filled. Then he took the envoy aside and said: “There was no need to point out that the bags were empty. We could see that. And it wasn’t necessary to ask us to fill them. We would have done it anyway. If you come again, remember don’t talk so much.”
