Frederick Irwin Anglican School A School of The Anglican Schools Commission (Inc) Newsletter Website: www.frederickirwin.wa.edu.au Dear Parents This has been an extremely productive term, with so many students working so conscientiously. I have had the privilege of reading a large number of reports across the year groups, as have the Deputy Principals, over the past couple of week. I have been struck by the diligence of our students, and there are many great effort ratings, results and teacher comments to attest to this. However, education is not just about school work and I have been delighted to read comments that show just how lovely our students at Frederick Irwin are as people. Farewells As always, at the end of term, it is time, sadly, to say good-bye or at least au revoir to some of our number. To those students and families who are leaving Frederick Irwin at the end of this term, we wish you all the best for the future. We also have some staff leaving and we wish them well as they move to new chapters in their lives (although we know that some will find their way back to us again in some other capacity): Mrs Kelly Flugge (Home Economics), who has been an Education Assistant during the latter part of this term; Mrs Fay Chatfield (Finance), who has been filling in for a staff member on leave; Mrs Kerry Mitchell (Visual Art), who has been filling in for a teacher on leave; Mrs Louise Swift (Year 6), who has given eight dedicated years to teaching our students in the Primary; Mr Gus Warren, who has been our remarkable Design and Technology Technician for 19 years, retired yesterday; Mr Nick Jones (Director of Administration), who has made an impact in the two short years he has been with us, leaves to take up the position of Deputy Principal – Pastoral Care at John Wollaston Anglican Community School; and Mrs Debbie Mills (Business Manager), who retires at the end of the July holidays. Mrs Mills has given an incredible 21 years of service to the School, first as an Accounts Clerk, then Office Manager, followed by Assistant Business Manager and for the past 10 years as Bursar/Business Manager. Not only has she been an amazing financial manager, she has also supervised a number of large contracts and building projects. It is her energy and attention to detail that have the financial and physical aspects of the School in very fine shape. Her latest project has been our very beautiful chapel. Some very happy staff members are going on Long Service Leave – we wish them a restful and enjoyable break: Mrs Raelene Cassin (Science Technician) – Term 3 Mrs Wendy Morgione (Primary Education Assistant) – Term 3 Mrs Kerry O’Connor (Uniform Shop) – Term 3 Mrs Deidre Rooney (Performing Arts) – Semester 2 Mr Craig Winter (Mathematics) – Semester 2 Thank you to those staff members who filled promotion positions so ably while staff members have been on leave this semester: Mrs Denise Logue – Acting Head of Mathematics Ms Sophie Rowland – Acting Assistant Head of Ellis House Strategic Plan (2017 – 2020) Next term, we commence the consultation phase of our next Strategic Plan. This is something to which the Executive staff and School Council are very much looking forward. Dr Liz Pattison, who facilitated our present plan, will do so again, with the final document due to be ready in time for the start of the 2017 school year. Early next term, the time and date for the parent meeting with Dr Pattison will be sent to you. Ski Trip Best wishes to our Year 12 students and teachers who are off to the snow fields during the holidays. When I was ‘over east’ two weeks ago at a meeting of Anglican Schools Commission (ASC) Chairs and Principals, the pilot of the plane on one of the ‘legs’ of the journey, pointed out snow on the mountains – it looks as if it will be a good skiing season! Anglican Schools Commission Having mentioned in the previous paragraph that I was at an ASC meeting in the eastern states, it occurred to me that some parents may not be aware that, in addition to the 11 schools of the Anglican Schools Commission in Western Australia, we also have three schools in the Diocese of Wangaratta (which is mostly in Victoria, but also spans the New South Wales border) – Trinity Anglican College in Albury- Wodonga, Cathedral College in Wangaratta and Cobram Anglican Grammar School in Cobram. A bit of trivia, maybe; but I found the visit very interesting and the collegiality more than worthwhile. I wish all members of our school community a restful and rejuvenating July break. PRIMARY

Dear Parents and Caregivers Semester 1 2016 has been a very productive and busy time for the students and staff in Primary. I would like to congratulate the students on their commitment to their learning and their efforts over Semester 1. It was a pleasure to read the reports which reflected the achievements and progress the students had made with their learning over the year to date. They will be sent home today along with portfolios and I encourage all students to spend some time reflecting on their learning over the first semester and, in discussion with you, to target some goals that they want to set moving forward. These goals can be academic and/or social and should be achievable. In the report, there is a section that allows teachers to request an interview or gives you the option of contacting the teacher for an interview early in Term 3. This opportunity allows for increased communication related to your child’s progress and should you wish to make a time to see your child’s teacher, please contact them to arrange a suitable date and time. The Music assembly, held on Wednesday and Friday of this week, was an excellent showcase of the Primary Music programme and students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 participated with obvious enjoyment. The diverse nature of the performances certainly highlighted the skills being developed by Mrs Mattson and Mrs Boyle in their programme. This term, parent workshops have been held for all year levels and it is planned to make these workshops a regular feature of the Primary calendar. The sessions are designed to give some useful strategies and tips for helping students with literacy and numeracy acquisition. In Term 3, workshops will be held on numeracy, focusing on understanding place value and reading. Times, dates and venues will be sent home early in Term 3. We have some Primary staff who will be leaving us today and I would like to acknowledge them and wish them well. Unfortunately, after a term of illness, Mrs Louise Swift has reached the difficult decision to resign as of the end of the term and we wish her well as she takes time to aid her recovery. I would like to acknowledge Mrs Swift’s contribution to Primary over the past eight years and thank her for the wonderful guidance she has provided to our students. For Semester 2, we have been fortunate to secure the service of Mrs Stephanie O’Gorman, an experienced Upper Primary teacher, and she will replace Mrs Swift in Year 6. Mrs Wendy Morgione, K1 and K2 education assistant, will be away for Term 3 on Long Service leave. We hope she has a restful and enjoyable break. Mrs April Carmody will replace Mrs Morgione for the term and Mrs Anita Bailey will work, in Kindergarten on Wednesdays, to replace Mrs Carmody. I would like to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of the Primary staff who provide the students with many engaging learning experiences and spend many hours meeting and planning to ensure that the programs offered are meeting the needs of our learners. Best wishes to all families for a safe and restful break after a busy and productive semester. Kind regards Sue Skehan Head of Primary

PRIMARY PASTORAL CARE

The end of term is here and the excitement for holidays is in the air. This break is well-deserved for our students and I spoke at the Music assembly about how proud I was of the effort and learning each student participated in this semester. I also spoke about the break being an opportunity to spend time with loved ones and make enjoyable memories together. Gordon House The Gordon House Assembly was a special event, in which the School’s history and notable West Australians were explored. The assembly had a beautiful community feel and we were very honoured to have Mrs Margaret Court attend the assembly, which detailed some of her sporting accomplishments. The assembly was followed by activities for Gordon students across the school and I thank Mr Stuart Learmonth, all the Secondary student leaders, Mrs Karen Watts, Mr Michael Brown, and the other Gordon staff for making the day memorable for our students. House Captains With the end of the semester, I feel it prudent to mention the maturity and responsibility our House Captains have displayed. These student leaders meet with me regularly, giving up their time, but also volunteering to organise and participate in many initiatives. Their work is appreciated and recognised and I know that their positive influence will continue next semester. Uniform During the school holidays, we will relax and spend time away from the busy school routine. I politely ask that we all come back to School in Term 3, with appropriate uniform and hair. Kids Matter I was recently invited to some community circles in Year 6. These are meetings in which students can share their thoughts and feelings in a comfortable, safe and open environment. I appreciated my invitations and genuinely enjoyed speaking with the students. We spoke about decision making and the pressure and influence that can sometimes be put on us. Our aim is to provide students with a voice and strategies to negotiate difficult social situations. These circles are a great starting point for ensuring these discussions occur. Below is some information from the Kids Matter website which outlines advice for parents on helping their children with decision making.

UPPER PRIMARY NEWS

It has been a busy Term 2 in Upper Primary, including NAPLAN assessments for Year 3 and 5, followed by two weeks with swimming lessons, for all Year 3 to 6 students, at the new Mandurah Aquatic Centre. Students have been immersed in a range of interesting learning opportunities, especially with their Education Research Projects (ERPs). ERPs are now a significant component of the Engagement Matters pedagogy from Years 3 to 5, and will flow through to Year 6 in 2017. The ERP process involves students starting with explicit teaching, then linking a personal interest to the key learning intentions for a particular subject area. Students then carry out research and complete a literacy component, numeracy component and an artefact of choice, demonstrating their skills and understanding. This term, the Year 3s linked their interests to their History Learning Intentions, ‘Who lived here first and how do we know?’ and ‘How has our community changed over time?’. Year 4s focused on History and the broader concept of ‘Journeys’; while Year 5s focused on Science and the general concept of ‘Adaptations’. Throughout the ERP process, it has been wonderful to see the enormous engagement and self-directed learning by the students. The Year 3 students also enjoyed a great excursion to Kings Park, to the Naturescape Playground, as well as a very informative incursion from City of Mandurah to talk about the replacement of the Old Mandurah Bridge. They were able to ask a range of questions and learn first-hand about this important local community development. One of their favourite activities in Year 3 Science has been caring for seeds and making observations as they have watched plants germinating and growing. Year 4 students went on an exciting excursion to Perth Zoo at the start of this term, to explore Zoorassic Park. It was a great opportunity to learn about nineteen incredible dinosaurs, their similarities to some of today’s animals, their adaptations, and how we can use our knowledge to prevent future extinctions. Another highlight of the Year 4 term has been having many parents visit their class to be part of the ERP learning process, rather than just seeing the end product of their efforts. In Year 5, students have been enjoying responding to the video game MYST Exile III in writing lessons, while learning to use figurative language to enhance their descriptions in their narratives. In Art, they have learnt how to use perspective in drawings, producing some amazing creative pieces of art featuring streetscapes, aquariums, art galleries and landscapes. They also enjoyed an excursion to John XXIII in Perth, on Thursday 23 June, for a Lightning Carnival with nine other schools. In Year 6, the highlight of the term was an excursion to Parliament House in Perth. The students enjoyed the opportunity to extend their learning about Australian Civics and Citizenship by observing Parliament at work and meeting a Member of Parliament. During their visit they even took part in a role-play in the Legislative Assembly Chamber, which was very exciting. In Science, Year 6s completed an investigation about mould. The students made their own chemical free ‘mould buster’ and, as part of their presentation, took into consideration the packaging, instructions and ingredients. As you can see, it has been a very busy and productive term. I trust everyone enjoys their well-deserved holiday and time with their families. Kind regards Sue Kirke Upper Primary Coordinator

DRAWING A LINE IN THE SAND

How many of us have drawn a line in the sand over issues/relationships and then smudge the line? Taking a stand on any issues or principle and being able to stick to what you have decided is hard. Joshua does it in the Old Testament, where he draws a line in the sand and says that he and his house will have faith in God and where He calls them, and that if anyone else feels the same, they are to cross the line. Parents draw lines in the sand for their children about their behaviour and achievements, and teachers do the same with students in their care. We all do it with relationships. When we draw lines in the sand does that make us, judgmental, uncaring, inflexible? Drawing a line in the sand is a challenge to both the drawer and the observer. Firstly, if we cross the line we need encouragement and understanding if we fail. We want to be there but we need to build up our resilience and strategies. Secondly, taking a stand is good for us when we need to show our true colours, show who we really are. It challenges our passion and commitment. Crossing the line should not be a one time opportunity. If there are people who don’t cross the line, then they are not to be regarded as second-class citizens. Scripture is clear that God loves all people and we should as well, even when we disagree. In a world where ‘anything goes’ and allows all viewpoints, there is still a need to draw a line in the sand when it matters about relationships, morals, ethics and faith. On some of those things we cannot and should not be flexible to make us acceptable to those who haven’t crossed the line. Kind regards Noel Oakey Chaplain

VIRTUE

The virtue for Week 10 has been Gentleness. Gentleness is acting and speaking in a kind, considerate way. It is using self-control, in order not to hurt or offend anyone. You can be gentle with people and animals in the way you touch them and the way you speak to them. You handle things carefully so they will not break or be hurt. When you think gentle thoughts, it makes the world a safer, gentler place. Why Practise it Without gentleness, things get broken and people feel hurt. It is easy to become too rough or say things we are sorry for. People are very sensitive beings. Many things are delicate and fragile, but feelings are the most fragile of all. When you are gentle, people and things stay safe. How do you Practise it? Gentleness is moving wisely, touching softly, holding carefully, speaking quietly and thinking kindly. You have to think about being gentle. Otherwise, it is easy to become too rough, move too fast or say hurtful things. When you feel mad or hurt, instead of hurting someone back, talk things out peacefully. When you think kindly and gently, people will see the gentleness in your eyes. Thought for the Day “Use a sweet tongue, courtesy, and gentleness, and thou mayest manage to guide an elephant by a hair.” Sa’di

2016 SYDNEY CANBERRA TRIP

Written by Ainsley Jones The 6th of April saw sixteen Year 12 students, accompanied by Mr Asphar and Mrs Logue, head to Perth airport and make way to Canberra. While we Trekkers enjoyed the start of the trip eager and excited, the poor teachers had a rocky start. Mrs Logue’s phone died as she got to the airport and she had to rush to buy a new one; while Mr Asphar, who has a great fear of flying, was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Our plane touched down at 10.30pm Canberra time and we sleepily staggered out with our luggage to meet Geoff, our friendly personal bus driver. Our eyes were soon wide open as we saw, for most of us, Canberra for the first time. In Canberra, we got to venture through Parliament House, the Old Parliament House, the War Memorial, High Court of Australia, and drive past the embassies, as well as view both the National Portrait Gallery and the National Museum. Canberra opened our eyes politically, legally and culturally. On the drive from Canberra to Sydney, most of us enjoyed turning the centre of the bus into our politics card game. When arriving at the first hotel, unloading suitcases from the bus and watching our bus drive off, we quickly realised we were at the wrong hotel and had to drag our luggage down a very long, crowded road to the right hotel. We certainly discovered the hustle and bustle of Sydney life first hand. Although still experiencing some educational tours such as The Rocks, University of Notre Dame Sydney and the Sydney Opera House, Sydney was our time too. This meant lots of shopping, seeing a movie, and of course the classy river cruise with a delicious three course meal. The trip had many highlights including the river cruise, shopping, sightseeing and taking selfies with Mr Asphar, as well as the opportunity to learn a lot and experience many new places. On behalf of all the 2016 Sydney/Canberra Trekkers, we’d like to thank everyone who was a part of organising the trip and a special big thank you the Mr Asphar and Mrs Logue for making the trip even more special. We will hold these memories for life.

INTER-HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY

Our Inter-House Cross Country for 2016 was held on Friday 13 May during periods 6, 7 and 8. A beautiful autumn day provided perfect weather conditions for the run. Running is not everyone’s favourite activity and despite this it was pleasing to see such strong representation from students prepared to participate in support of their House Group in the true spirit of competition. 339 students, 113 girls and 226 boys, chose to participate and contest the various year group events running three (3) kilometres of track around the boundaries of the school grounds and ovals. Congratulations to all those students who participated. There can only ever be one winner and we recognise the excellent performances of our individual champions, but we must also acknowledge the superb efforts of all those who competed. Fastest time on the day for females was Kirralee SHEPHERD (7GL) with a time of 10 minutes 55 seconds and the fastest time for males was Joshua TURNER (BAR3) with a time of 8 minutes 40 seconds breaking his record from last year by five seconds. For the first time competition points were allocated on individual times run not placing, encouraging all competitors to record their best performances. The faster the time run by students the more points they earnt for their House Group. There was less than ten minutes separating 1st place to last place in all age groups a phenomenal effort. The overall points championship was very closely contested with only a few points separating all place getters. Overall Points for 2016: Arnold 235 points Barrett 241 points Ellis 268 points Gordon 246 points Jamieson 212 points Rose 254 points Congratulations to Ellis House on taking out the overall Shield for 2016.

Kind regards Peter Skeggs Head of Health and Physical Education

UNIFORM SHOP

Uniform Shop Hours – 2016 Monday 12.30pm – 3.30pm Tuesday 8.00am – 12.00noon Thursday 8.00am – 12.00noon Friday 12.30pm – 3.30pm Dry Cleaning your Blazer The purpose of this article is to provide some guidance and advice relating to the safe laundering and dry cleaning of your Frederick Irwin School Blazer. The first rule is that blazers should never be home laundered. Treat your blazer like any suiting jacket – which is dry clean only. Just like a suit, blazers have high quality fabric (containing wool) together with fusing and lining which must be professionally cleaned. A quality dry cleaner should be used where possible. The above said, there are some dry cleaners that do not always dry clean in accordance with garment specifications. The primary complaint about dry cleaning is over-heating. When a blazer is over heated, the fusing (used to make collars and the lapel maintain shape) will come away from the fabric and result in bubbles, a wave pattern or bulging. An experienced dry cleaner will know this and can prevent this from happening. Frederick Irwin’s blazer manufacturer recommends using a larger-scale dry cleaner rather than small shopping centre-based dry cleaners. Larger volume dry cleaners tend to be more professional and have experience with special garments. If you are in any doubt, do not be afraid to ask questions about the dry cleaner’s practices and knowledge. Sound dry cleaning practices will ensure your blazer will last longer. Lost Uniforms Can you all please check your children uniforms for names. If the item is not yours, please return it to the school office ASAP, where we are able to give the item to the correct child. If you know the child please pass it on to the owner. Please be mindful that all items of clothing must have your child’s name on it. This will not only reduce the risk of lost items, which result in additional costs for families, but items can easily be returned. Exchange or Refunds on New Uniforms Items We are always willing to exchange or refund new items purchased if they are the wrong size or if a parent has changed their mind. However, these items need to be: • Returned with the original purchase receipt • Still have the original tags attached or in packaging • Be unworn/clean, as when purchased • Un-laundered Any item that is marked in anyway, whether it has been worn or not, will not be accepted for a credit or exchange for a different size or item. Your co-operation in this matter would be appreciated. There is no refund on any second hand items.
