On Sunday evening, at 7:45 pm,a male wearing a ull ace mask, aball cap, a red hoody that zips in theront, and black pants and gloves, walked into the Quick Pick onMain Street in Middletown. Whathappened next almost changedthe Kumar amily orever.
Proprietor Deepak Kumar wasalone in the store, stacking beerin the rear rerigerators. When heheard the bell ring that signaled
a customer, he raced to the ronto the store. “Customers do notlike to be let waiting.” When helooked at his customer, he realizedthere was trouble. “He told me togive him all o the money.” Deep-ak responded that there wasn’tany money, since he and his wieAnita deposit cash throughout theday. Without another word, themasked man pulled a gun rombehind his back.
“I didn’t know i the gun wasreal or not, but I stared at it. WhenI saw the man’s hand go or thetrigger, I dropped to the oor be-hind the counter.” Tat quick, in-stinctive response may have savedDeepak’s lie. Te man red thegun, most likely at Deepak’s head;the bullet went into the wall. Teman ed on oot.
Deepak automatically calledMiddletown’s Police Depart-ment. Ocer Dan Manili wasat the scene beore Deepak gotof o the phone. Te FrederickCounty Sherif’s Department alsoresponded. Te Winchester Po-lice Department brought in their
tracking dog. Te roads leavingMiddletown were closed at 2ndand 4th Streets, until the PoliceDepartment checked the entirearea. A bullet was removed romthe wall behind Deepak’s counter.
Deepak and Anita are still inshock. Deepak said his amily al-most lost him, and or what? Ac-cording to Anita, she lives in earthat it could happen again. Teamily lives close by; Anita saysshe is keeping an eye on the storerom the house. “We try to treatour customers very nice; we don’t
think o them as strangers. Tis isshocking.” Anita said.Deepak said the man was ap-

Middletown Police Chie Phil-ip Breeden emphasized that “i someone comes into your storerequesting money, give it to them;no amount o money is worth yourlie.”
Middletown Detective Mikeennet is investigating the at-tempted robbery, use o a rearmin the commission o a elony, and
wearing a mask in public. Note: it

there are usually people around.”Her co-worker, Regina Milleragreed.
Across the street at MiddletownMarket and More, clerk Anthony Harris said it was “out o my con-

Don’t let your bad manners get yourelegated to the kids’ table this holi-day season.
Holiday meals always seem to rampup people’s focus on dining etiquetteand table manners, said Pat Pesci, director of the hotel and restaurantmanagement program at Kansas StateUniversity.
“Typically, Americans don’t sitdown and dine together,” Pesci said.“People just don’t break bread any-more; they multitask. Then at thistime of the year, you have all theseholidays and the large family mealsthat go with them.”
The holiday meal can bring a lot of stressors into one event: family mem-bers who don’t see each other thatoften; different age groups; different
opinions; uncommon and varied cui-sine; and fancier tableware.
Pesci said it is important to ask yourhost if you can assist in any way, andalso to ask, rather than assume, whereyou will be sitting.
And once you’re seated, it’s stan-dard to wait until everyone has foodbefore you begin eating, Pesci said. When faced with uncertainty aboutwhich of your multiple utensils touse, start at the outside and move intoward the plate.
Another pitfall during holiday mealsis the conversation.
“Holiday meals ofteor more,” Pesci said. “Ashould eat slowly, it dolong to consume foodoften we eat in front of many people aren’t uson lengthy conversatioing.”

SVEC 2012 scholarship
inormation“An investment in Knowledge always pays the best interest” -
Benjamin Franklin.Since 1992, Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative (SVEC)
has awarded scholarships to deserving high school seniors in theregion that it serves. Tese students have earned the scholar-ships with excellence in the classroom, extracurricular activi-ties, and contributions to the community. In the years since thescholarship has been awarded, the Cooperative has given back
more than $60,000 to the community. During the spring o 2012SVEC will award ten $1,000 scholarships to students whose par-ents or guardians are member/owners o SVEC.
Furthering one’s education is the best investment or successin the uture. Te obstacles acing most students today are therising costs associated with a college education.

Dog’s Cough a WorryDEAR PAWS’S CORNER: My
friend has a Border Collie mix,“Jeffy,” who is about two or threeyears old. He snorts or coughsat least 10 or 15 times a day, andwhen he does, a copious amount of mucus comes out of his nose. Canyou tell me what causes this andhow to remedy it? — B.P., PrinceGeorge, Va.
DEAR B.P.: Coughing in dogs canhave a number of causes, rangingfrom allergy to serious infection. Thefirst thing your friend needs to do istake Jeffy to the veterinarian to ruleout a dangerous illness like kennelcough or other infection, or an injury.
Your friend should let the vet knowhow long Jeffy has had this cough, if he was recently boarded or regularlygoes to doggy day care, and if hisshots are up to date. Jeffy also should
be regularly treated with a heartworm preventive; if he isn’t, your friendmust let the doctor know. If Jeffydealt with a recent flea infestation, letthe vet know.
If Jeffy is diagnosed with an illness — respiratory infections can happento any dog — the vet will determinethe type of infection and prescribemedicine to treat it. He also may pre-scribe a cough suppressant to give thedog a little relief from the coughing.
If Jeffy gets a clean bill of health,
your friend will want to look intoother causes of his cough and mucus, such as seasonal allergies, a foodallergy or an environmental allergysuch as dampness and/or mold in thehouse. Treatment, along with reducedexposure to the allergen that’s caus-ing the problem, can make a big dif-ference.
