Most writers are inspired by is-

sues they eel compelled to ad-dress. For Stephens City authorDave Dentel, the ongoing clashbetween science and aith notonly drove him to pen his new

bookit prompted him to launcha publishing company.

Tough in the works or morethan a year, Dentels Te GodImperative makes a timely ar-rival. Its message that aith aidsreason and protects civil libertiescomes when some presidentialcandidates are being criticizedor questioning certain scienticorthodoxies. As or his complementary ven-

Onward Press has posted TeGod Imperative or sale on Am-azon.com. Te book is also beingsold by Dentels ull-time em-ployer, Home School Legal De-ense Association, located in Pur-cellville. Dentel hopes in additionto approach Frederick Countybooksellers to see i they wouldbe willing to carry the title. And though his book addresses

issues now being discussed in thenational media, Dentel said hescertain it will resonate with localreaders. Our community is lled with

    hard-working, amily-oriented

people o aith, he says. Teyappreciate science but dont nec-essarily think it should be usedby experts to attack religion andtraditional values.

Te God Imperative coun-ters the arguments o prominent

atheists who employ the theoryo evolution to insist that God isa hoax and religion a dangerouslie. Te book instead reveals howrecent scientic discoveries showthat the universe displays intri-cate design and makes belie ina creator more than reasonable. Its a debate that is still beingplayed out on the national stage,Dentel said, pointing out howexas Gov. Rick Perry was ridi-culed by some pundits when hedismissed evolution as a awedtheory and said he believed Godcreated lie. How people viewscience in relation to religious

do was to learn rom the weavers inthe amily business.

He said that he sat with weavers, not so much to learn to weave, butto learn about the weavers minds,to see and understand their prob-

lems, needs, wishes and thinking,so he could do something betteror them.

I came to know things no oneelse knew and I thought that theleast I could do was help them to abetter lie, he said.

Te main reason or my athersending me there was that I shouldnever do anything wrong or toabuse them, he explained, andadded, mostly these people talkedto each other about hard times.

One thing he learned was howmuch work goes into producing arug.

A lot o things all come togetherto make up quality. One 8 x10 car-pet takes two persons eight to tenmonths to nish and no two car-

pets are the same, he said.Te weavers have a map o

how the carpet must be wovenwith dots representing how manystitches and what colors to use. Atrst they ollow the map, but ater

a while, they have it in their headsand dont need it.

Also, the nish o a carpet romcountries which have a 5,000-year-old carpet-making history is some-thing that cannot be reproduced bya machine or even rom China.

Teirs are typically rougher andthey cant reproduce the nish thatPersian rugs have. China producesthe silk but cant make the rugs likeIran, he observed.

Ater learning basics rom theweavers and nding out what theirconcerns and problems were, he

    Frederick County Report

Te Old Dominion is centerstage in the high-stakes battle orcontrol over the upper chamber othe US Congress, as Democrat imKaine vies or the seat now held byJim Webb, opposing ormer Sena-tor George Allen. In recent pollsthe race looks to be tight, due inlarge part to Kaines popularityrom his time as governor and theenergy o the ea Party balancingout. Te race is expected to re-main close all the way to electionday next November with ew ex-perts oering a solid prediction.

Kaine aces a tough climb be-

cause his name will appear justunder President Obamas name onthe ballot and Obamas approvalrating is still mired in the mid-to-low 40s nationally and in Virgin-

    ia. Opposition to his healthcare

bill and his views on governmentspending have turned many othe independents and moderateRepublicans o Northern Virgin-ia that elected him last electionagainst him. Kaine will have trou-ble distancing himsel rom thePresident record, as he was at thetime chairman o the DemocraticNational Committee.

im Kaine has been criticizedin the past or being so vocal andopen about his Catholic aith andhis personal view that abortion iswrong. However, expect reworkson the social issues ront, as Kaineclearly states on his website thathe will oppose any eort to dis-

mantle the Roe v Wade decision. He has said in the past that ocus-ing on helping poor mothers is abetter way o solving the abortionproblem than by outlawing it and

    criminalizing mothers and doc-

tors. Allen could gain traction onthis key issue or conservatives.Allen aces the dicult chal-

lenge o taking on a ormer gover-nor who was highly popular whenhe served. He will need to use theconservative energy that is brew-ing right now to push his voters tothe polls. In addition to abortion, expect Allen to highlight Kainesopposition to the death penalty, which Kaine says is based on hisCatholicism. Many Virginianswill not like this position or theassertion that Catholics should beagainst the death penalty. He willhope to ride a wave o conserva-tive passion to victory.

Te battle will be decided inNorthern Virginia, rom theShenandoah Valley toward the

    limits o D.C. Afuent, educated

independents and moderate Re-publicans are the key swing votersin this area. Tey generally likeKaine, have a poor impression oAllen, but by and large disapproveo President Obamas agenda, while maintaining their ondnessor him personally. Tis shouldprove to make the race a tight andintriguing one to watch. Politicalprognosticators will have to be ex-tra careul in the days beore theelection when trying to pick a win-ner. At the moment, i orced topick, I would say Kaine wins whileObama loses the state, but bothby small margins. Independentsand moderate Northern Virginia

    One More ...

    With FeelingTe Sprint Cup championship

is now down to two drivers who

    could scarcely be more dissimilar

    or evenly matched.

    Carl Edwards orte is consis-

tency. He has won only one race

but been atop the Sprint Cup

points ater 21 o the 35 races to

date. In the Chase, which narrowsthe eld to 12 and determines the

    champion, Edwards average n-

ish is 5.22. He leads ony Stew-

art by three points entering the

    nal race at Homestead-Miami

    Speedway.

Edwards, 31, has never won achampionship at NASCARs pre-

    mier level.

Stewart, 40, has won two. He

is the only driver to win a cham-

    pionship beore (2002) and a-

ter (2005) the Chase ormat was

implemented. He once won threeraces in a Chase (2006) or which

he hadnt qualied, and he is the

only driver (2005) to win a Chase

without winning any o the races

in it, a distinction that Edwards

could share i he captures the

championship without winningthe Ford 400. Stewart, rom Co-

lumbus, Ind., was the last cham-

pion (2002) to drive a Pontiac, and

during his career, he has divided

    his 43 victories among Pontiacs,

    oyotas and Chevys.

    Edwards, rom Columbia, Mo.,

has never driven any make but a

Ford. Stewart has never driven a

    Ford in NASCAR.

With one race to go, the games-

    manship has subsided. It appears

    that neither contender is going

to succeed at getting under the

    others skin.
