THE 110TH ANNIVERSARY
CONVENTION
The 110th Anniversary Convention of Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity was held August 3-7, 2005 at the University of Florida in Gainesville. One hundred undergraduates and alumni from across the United States and Canada participated in this very successful event. And so, the Florida Delta Chapter rolled out the red carpet in true Southern hospitality to warmly welcome their Brothers. Their work on behalf of the gathering was truly appreciated! This year’s Convention Committee consisted of: Honorary Chairman, George A. Beck, H.B., University of Virginia; Co-Chair, Andy Golbert, C.K., Lafayette College; Vincent Marbury, C.K., Virginia Tech; Dave Fechtman, Florida Atlantic; Jon Borell, Eastern Washington; Gary Sanders, Shippensburg University; Joe Nascimento, Keith Kimmel, Anthony J. Salzman, C.K., Jeff Buhler, Josh Krehbiel, Kris Mehaffey, Nick Hansen, and Matt Seymour, University of Florida. In-depth educational sessions were held throughout the five-day convention, as well as various brotherhood activities and a local community service project. Additional highlights of convention included the Annual IEC and Alumni Sponsored Cook Out, the Undergraduate Awards Presentation, the International Executive Council Meeting, the House of Delegates Meeting and the Presidential Awards Banquet.
The Second Annual Cook Out was a fun time for alumni and undergrads. In appreciation for their work on behalf of the Fraternity, alumni fired up the evening by cooking for and serving the undergraduates. Helping to serve up the fun were Executive Chef Vin Marbury, C.K., VPI, Sous Chef Shawn Upchurch, Baldwin-Wallace, and Chefs de Cuisine Bob Lash (who was initiated an Honorary Brother during convention) and Tony Salzman, C.K., Florida University, Marc Weppner and Seth Bosecker, VPI, Paul Kaufman, C.K., Franklin and Marshall, and Mike LaBelle, FIT.
Following the Cook Out, the Undergraduate Awards presentation was held. The major awards presented were:
OUTSTANDING CHAPTER
OPERATIONS New York Kappa Tau
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute North Carolina Omega Beta
The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Michigan Delta Beta Ferris State University
Virginia Omega Alpha The University of Virginia
IMPROVEMENT IN CHAPTER
OPERATIONS Pennsylvania Phi Sigma
The University of the Sciences Pennsylvania Kappa Sigma
Widener University Virginia Omega Rho
Virginia Commonwealth University
Each year, The House of Delegates Meeting is held to elect the coming year’s undergraduate Councilman as well as alumni Councilmen to serve terms on the IEC. This year’s undergraduate representative is Dan Krieg, Ferris State, and alumnus Mike LaBelle, FIT, who will serve on the International Executive Council. This meeting not only serves as an electoral vehicle, but also allows all participating brothers to learn and actively participate in the official processes of this governing body of the Fraternity.

Educational Foundation
Scholarships
The Pi Lambda Phi Educational Foundation, through the generosity of alumni who have contributed to the 2005 Annual Alumni Donation Program, has awarded two scholarships for the Spring 2006 semester. The following undergraduate brothers have received $2,500 each, payable toward their academic expenses at their respective universities. On behalf of these brothers, the Educational Foundation extends sincere
Gratitude to its alumni…for it is through your support that this scholarship program is again possible. Providing this program, and the many other programs that have been offered through the Foundation, is vital to the personal and academic development of our undergraduate brotherhood!
Joseph Johnson Joseph is a junior at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. He is a resident of Sherwood, WI, and has been a brother of the MA Theta Chapter of Pi Lambda Phi since fall 2003. Having graduated high school as the number one student in his class, Joseph has continued his educational diligence as

Brothers: Once again we are pleased to share with you news and information about your Fraternity and Educational Foundation! This publication is possible because of the generous support of Pi Lam Brothers, who have contributed to the Pi Lambda Phi Educational Foundation in 2005. This past year, over 700 individuals have supported the work of the Foundation and their names are proudly listed on page 7-10. We are also pleased to recognize milestone anniversaries celebrating 75, 50, and 25 years since graduation and initiation into Pi Lambda Phi. The purpose of the Foundation is to support the educational and scholarship efforts of our Fraternity. During this past year, the Foundation has increased its support of the Fraternity and expanded the number of scholarships awarded to individual undergraduate Brothers. The Foundation also strives to judicially mange overhead costs associated with running a modern foundation. The Foundation Administrator, with articles and content contributed by various Brothers, created this publication “in-house.” Our Administrator is the only paid employee of the Foundation, working on a part-time basis. All Foundation Trustees are volunteers who pay their own expenses to attend meetings with other Brothers, such as George Bruckman, C.K., providing legal advice and support. In 2006, the Foundation hopes to continue to make strides by expanding scholarship opportunities for undergraduate Brothers. It is also hoped to continue assisting the Fraternity in its effort to provide the valuable and critical financial support necessary for educational programs offered to the chapters. Fraternity educational efforts targeted to risk management, chapter leadership training, substance abuse, prejudice, etc. help our brothers develop strong chapters and, most importantly, establish essential character traits necessary to compete on campus and after graduation. Thanks for a great 2005, and we all look forward to another great year in the history of Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity! Fraternally,

Educational Foundation Scholarships (continued) Joseph Johnson (concluded) he currently holds a cumulative GPA of 4.0. While maintaining his excellent grades, he has actively participated in his chapter operations as a “mini” Scribe, Steward, Social Chair, Archon and is currently the Rex-elect for the spring 2006 semester. If his studies and duties with his chapter were not enough….Joseph is also a member of the MIT Varsity Lacrosse Team, MIT’s Symphony Orchestra and leisurely plays intramural soccer, football, basketball, hockey, softball, and volleyball. Additionally, he is a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America. Aspiring toward a master’s degree and further to a career in the development of fuel-efficient technologies in the automotive industry, Joseph has, for the near term, applied for a summer internship in Germany. He hopes to be an intern for a major foreign automaker and assist with the development of hydrogen-powered cars and fuel cells. With the hope of returning all that being a Pi Lam has given to him, Joseph plans to keep active with his chapter as an alumnus and lead an alumni drive to increase donations and involvement in the MA Theta Chapter.
Brendan Sorg Having sustained his position on the Dean’s List of Baldwin-Wallace College consistently since his freshman year, Brendan has been working diligently toward a 2006 degree in Business Administration and Communication Studies. He has maintained a leadership position in both the classroom and in campus organizations while additionally acting as Rex of the OH Beta Tau Chapter of Pi Lambda Phi. Brendan was initiated a brother during spring semester 2005.
During his term as Rex, Brendan has led his chapter in re-creating its identity on campus during the spring 2005 Revitalization. The lessons and opportunities that have arisen from this project have further proved to him the value of being a Pi Lam, values which he will carry throughout the rest of his life. Additionally, Brandon has held the position of Philanthropy Chair and served as an Inter-fraternity Council representative and a member of the Recruitment Committee.
Brendan is experienced in many functional arenas on campus including resident life,
student activities, alcohol education, and community outreach programs. He has served as a Resident Assistant, Student Director of the 2005 Social Norms Campaign for Alcohol Related Issues Education, Student Campus Ambassador, Staff Member of the Health Promotion Grant Board and President of the Alpha Lambda Honor Society. Professionally, Brendan has worked as an intern for the Mayor of the City of Jamestown, New York, formulating both the 2005 City Financial Trend and Policy Reports, and as a marketing intern to the Vice-President of Marketing at Smiths Aerospace Fabrications maintaining purchase orders, database management and offering office administrative support.
JAQUA Foundation Scholarships Headed by PA Alpha Delta (Temple University) alumnus, Eli Hoffman, ’59, The Jaqua Foundation, through the PLP Educational Foundation, annually provides funds for scholarships, which are specifically earmarked for brothers of the PA Alpha Delta Chapter. For this past fall 2005 semester, two PA Alpha Delta brothers have been awarded $2,500 scholarships, each, toward their educational expenses at Temple. Congratulations to the following brothers. Keep up the good work!
Brian Fiore Brian attends Temple University as an Honor Program student of Actuarial Science at the Fox School of Business & Management. He was initiated a brother of PA Alpha Delta Chapter in April 2005, and is additionally a member of Gamma Iota Sigma, the Business Honors Student Association As is evident by his 3.94 cumulative GPA, Brian is committed to maximizing his efforts into school related responsibilities. Those efforts are reinforced by his personal perception of “success,” with which he has paved the path for his college years and beyond. Brian believes success is “…finding out what makes you happy, a dream no one can take from you, and pursuing it at all costs with a smile on your face and joy in your heart, no matter what.” He plans to solidify that dream as a professional actuary after graduation in 2008, and use his success to give back to the people that have helped him along the way. One such group is the brotherhood of Pi Lambda Phi.
A resident of Hazelton, PA, Brian is an experienced sportsman having received gold, silver and bronze medals in the Keystone State Games, was a member of The First Team/All-Conference/All-Area Basketball, a Temple Champion of the Atlantic 10 Shoot-out, and currently plays Intramural low and high competitive basketball. Although he has been a member of the PA Alpha Delta chapter for a short time, Brian states he has learned respect, trust, and friendship through brotherhood and community service. The lessons learned and memories created thus far are ones that will remain with him for his entire life.
Ron Jenkins
Ron hails from Scranton, PA and is currently a sophomore at Temple. Initiated as a brother of Pi Lambda Phi in December 2004, he has proved to be not only academically accomplished, but has been successful in proving his commitment to his chapter through his enthusiasm and deeds. With a cumulative GPA of 3.70, Ron is a National Honor Society Member, honored on the Dean’s List in Temple’s College of Sciences and Technology, and has received two merit scholarships since his freshman year. Ron is majoring in Biochemistry, with a minor in Political Science. With his sites toward attending medical school, Ron aspires to one day own his own pediatric practice. Having held the positions of both Academic Chair and T.U.G.A. representative for his chapter, Ron has been sited for his eagerness to do whatever it takes to keep his chapter working smoothly, offers his brothers assistance in their studies as well as chapter and house related projects. Additionally, Ron hopes to one day run for Rex of PA Alpha Delta. Besides his schooling responsibilities, Ron participates in intramural flag football and softball, and during the summers runs The Playing Fields, a children's day care center. This coming summer, plans are in the works for an internship with a pharmaceutical company.

The Frater December 1916 Fraternity Man vs. Independent
To arrive at a state of happiness and content through a comparison of our own position with the position of those less fortunate is not the most magnanimous and unselfish course to pursue. Yet, fundamentally, it is the only way in which one can come to a realization and appreciation of the fact that he has something to be thankful for. Thus it is that our country today, by comparing its own peaceful state with the devastation and bloodshed going on abroad, is contented. Thus, it seems to me, the fraternity man, in considering the position of the independent, should experience a sense of pleasant satisfaction.
But, as it is often said, “Comparisons are odius.” And all college men, with few exceptions, have been independents at some period of their college career, and therefore familiar with the conditions of the independent, I shall merely present some of the advantages gained from being affiliated with a fraternity, and some of the invaluable inheritances incidentally accruing thereto.
To begin with, the fraternity is an educational institution in itself. Its members receive an education entirely different from that offered by the university, but which, in preparing men for the encounter with the outer world is essentially more practical. A sense of responsibility and business experience is gained in managing the chapter house. The intercourse with the other men in the house develops tact and judgement, while the lessons learned in adjusting one’s temper to that of the other men are invaluable. In the matter of “rushing,” as the campaign for new men is called, the fraternity man receives a training which only the actual experience of life can give. The tact exercised in trying to make a favorable impression on the men being “rushed,” and the quickness with which the member has to make up his mind as to the qualities of the man “rushed,” develops a judgement of character which in the game of life will easily prove its worth.
Now I do not stubbornly adhere to the proposition that the above-mentioned benefits are open to fraternity men exclusively. But, I do contend that the opportunity afforded the independent is not so easily accessible. However, to clinch my remarks, as it were, I will quote a passage from a magazine article, by an anonymous author, which the independent will find an invincible argument in favor of fraternity men. “A graduate,” it reads, “who is a fraternity man, is not only an alumnus of the college, but of his chapter. The chapter performs a valuable service in keeping him interested in the college. As a contributor to the house fund, he has a vital interest in something connected with his alma mater. Once or twice each year, he gets a circular letter from the chapter with news of the college and alumni. His record is kept by the chapter. It is a clearinghouse for information concerning all of its members. No matter how long he has been away, he finds somebody in the college town who knows who he is, who is glad to see him. His name has been read in the old minute books. Traditions concerning him have been told around the fireplace, and he being out of college these twenty-five years, perhaps. When he enters the chapter house, he gets a warm clasp of a hand. The boys proceed to pick out his picture in the groups hanging on the wall. In my chapter they call you by your old nickname, or by your given name, unless you are too frostily dignified, and make you a boy again, with them, an elder brother, but a brother. When I go into the house of my chapter, and they call me, fifiteen years out of college, by my given name, it warms the cockles of my heart and my blood flows faster. Your old college name in the mouths of college boys. How
sweet it is! Here is time defied, here is the one place in the world where the fountain sought by Ponce de Leon ever flows, perpetual youth realized. The chapter is eternally young, eternally joyous, and to have an eternal welcome to it is a precious privilege.”
Are there many independents, if any, who can in any way enjoy such a privilege?

Saturday night during convention is always a special festivity, where brothers can celebrate the past days of accomplishments, lessons learned and, of the highest substance, brotherhood shared. This year’s Presidential Awards Banquet was held at the ballroom of the Reitz Union on the University campus. Four Past Presidents of the Fraternity were in attendance including Stanley Glasser, H.B., University of Cincinnati, Stanley L. Klunder, H.B., St. John’s University, Bennet Silverman, C.K., Columbia University and Paul Kaufman, C.K., Franklin and Marshall. George A. Beck, H.B., University of Virginia, Executive Director Emeritus, was the Master of Ceremonies assisted by IEC President Ronald Grossman, C.K., Washington and Jefferson College. A notable highlight of this year’s banquet was an impersonation of one of our Founding Fathers, Louis Sampter Levy, by Harvey Lasky, Lafayette College.
During the Presidential Banquet, special awards were presented to brothers and chapters who have served the Fraternity well through their active service:

When convention concludes, it is hoped that each brother takes with him new found experience, knowledge, and lasting memories. Many new friends were made - many road trips were planned. Stories were told - and retold. Once again, in full force, was the meaning of fraternity for the brothers of Pi Lambda Phi! Plans are currently in full swing for Pi Lambda Phi’s 111th Anniversary Convention in August 2006! Check for further details later in the year on the Fraternity web site at www.pilambdaphi.org.
Not Four Years –But a Lifetime! Live the Creed!
110TH ANNIVERSARY CONVENTION (concluded)
Dear Brothers, It gives me great pleasure to bring you greetings and the good news that Pi Lambda Phi is very much alive and well in this new academic year. There exists an atmosphere of enthusiasm and newfound optimism that our beloved brotherhood has surmounted most of the administrative and financial problems of the past three years and is on track for growth and prosperity in the near and distant future. Thanks to the support of our loyal alumni and the dedicated leadership of my immediate predecessor, Paul Kaufman, C.K., and the brothers of the International Executive Council, the Fraternity is once more under responsible and effective leadership and with sound financial management in place. Over the past three years we have paid back most of the enormous debt incurred by our previous management and with the expertise of our treasurer, James B. Morris, C.K., CPA, have managed cash flow in a responsible fashion with newly installed appropriate safeguards. A new Director of Chapter Operations has been hired and he has proved to be a real asset to our operations. Gary Sanders, alumnus of our Shippensburg University Chapter is on the job full time and has worked very well with our volunteers on Council to improve relations with our affiliate undergraduate chapters. We have managed to continue our yearly conventions, which have proved very successful in a college campus setting. North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Florida have hosted the conventions since 2003. Convention 2006 will be held in early August, with the venue to be announced shortly. Additionally in 2005, we held a series of productive and successful conclaves in the Northeast and Midwest. A similar series is planned for spring 2006. We are also enthusiastically looking forward to expansion with three very interested groups on the campuses of the University of Michigan, Lock Haven State University in Pennsylvania and the University of Wisconsin at Platteville. These groups are excellent prospects and represent our return to a carefully organized plan of expansion. Through the leviathan efforts of a core group of alumni who have volunteered their services, time and considerable financial resources, this Fraternity has weathered the storms of the past three years and has not only survived, but progressed. To ensure our future we very much need the support of our Alumni and respectfully request your continued interest, generosity and communication with the international organization. Fraternally,
Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity 2005 – 2006
Ronald M. Grossman, M.D., C.K. IEC President
