Turning trees into assets

As we recover from a severe recession, the most important thing would be to learn from the mistakes of others and take a look at why we got into so much trouble. We should also look at why some businesses failed and others survived even some who prospered.

I read all about recessions and what you can do and how you can avoid them affecting your business. We doubled in size during this recent down turn, how?

The secret to all businesses is money management and this is the story of the turtles and the hares.

During the boom days the hares were buying up land and making hundreds of thousands on one land deal. I the turtle was driving a 1995 surf, buying up new equipment to build up our business but paying of debt as fast as possible. Also, most important of all, I was building up working capital and kept our loans small (under 25% debt ratio) also building a good record with our bank. Meanwhile the hares were happy and making a killing but as their incomes grew instead of paying of debt they leased cars, went on holidays and worst of all borrowed more money, a lot more money and poured it into bigger and flasher houses. The demand for their huge incomes grew but that was not a problem because of all the credit available every new deal meant more and more money. In the meantime customer service was falling, prices skyrocketed and the customer’s got discouraged with the terrible service and high prices but it didn’t matter because everyone had years of work ahead. The hares were right, this was never going to end or so they thought?

2008 it did. The hares were trapped, their incomes plummeted and that should not have mattered however their debt levels were so high they needed cash and their old friends (the bank) could lend them no more. They had no money to market, hadn’t built a brand, their customers remembered the terrible service and left them for better deals. The hares got hungry, their fate was sealed.

This was the turtles time, with good cash flow plus cash and credit available there was money to be made. It was time to get a landcruiser, a boat, may as well pick up a holiday house as well because of strong cashflow our suppliers were falling over themselves with good pricing. We marketed heavily forcing our competitors into recession. As our customers pulled back on their spending I needed us to continue to grow and that’s what we did, we had a strong customer base to work from and we picked up existing businesses and new ones to grow into new markets, that got us through but the key to it all was cash (real money).

Now that’s my little tale and the reason I’m telling it now is because I feel the tide has turned again and things are looking on the up. It’s not long before the hares will return. So this time lets learn from the saying ‘cash is king’ when things pick up and your feeling rich pay of as much debt as possible, run against the tide and fight that urge to buy a flash car you don’t need or a bigger house you cant afford, pay of debt, build your brand, look after your customers because the next time it crashes and it will, America and Europe will not be able to borrow their way out of it. It will be a long and hard journey and only the best turtles will survive and there will be fortunes to be made…..

Are you a busy business person rushing to that meeting or trying to get out the door in the morning?

Where are the car/house keys?

Don’t panic go to your Iphone, open up the Proximo app and with 1 push your keys are found

Gyms watch out.. we have many alternate workout options right here in Frankton. Check out what we have found.

THIS WINTERget moving

They believe — and medical studies prove — that the best way to lose weight and keep it off forever is to simply keep track of the foods you eat. Gimmicky machines and fad diets don’t work, so they designed a free website and mobile apps that make calorie counting and food tracking easy. But don’t just take our word for it.. check out their website at www.myfitnesspal.com.

MYFITNESSPAL.COM

FITNESS AND FLEXIBILITY RIGHT HERE IN FRANKTONWe’ve all said at some stage ‘I must get fit’ or ‘I must join that gym’ – but let’s face it, the whole gym thing isn’t for everyone.

That’s where local fitness guru Tania Campbell comes in with her unique fitness class offering and brand new ‘Lastix’ stretch classes for women.

Tania instructs fitness classes in two Frankton locations (Remarkables Primary School Hall and City Impact Church) while fellow Fitness For Life team member, Nicole ‘Chicago’ McLean conducts a variety of stretch classes. Tania is no newby to Queenstown, Fitness for Life has been operating for the past eight years and during this time she’s converted local women of all ages from ‘gym phobics’ to ‘fitness addicts’. Her unique blend of fitness knowledge, personal attention and motivation has ladies coming back for more and they’re all thanking her for it.

With more than 19 years’ experience in the fitness industry as a personal trainer, gym manager and group exercise instructor, Tania’s business focuses on group exercise classes for women with a programme that changes weekly, meaning no-one gets bored! To support the classes Tania has introduced ’The Blitz’, a six-week lifestyle eating plan to help clients achieve the results they’re working towards. She believes many people fail to achieve their goals because they’re misled by fitness and weight loss fallacies.

Not everyone signs up for ‘The Blitz’, but many of those that do see tangible results within the six weeks and adopt Tania’s nutrition and healthy eating advice – based on her years of experience in the health and fitness industry -- from then on.

The new Lastix class that started just one month ago adds a whole new element to the Fitness For Life offering. Stretching is such an important part of anyones training regime and crucial for overall

well-being, especially as we get older.

For class times, location and more information contact Tania on 027 442 2587 or visit www.fitnessforlife.co.nz

“FEEL GOOD” WINTER COMFORT FOODSDRINK FAT-FREE

MILK TO WARD OFF THE SNIFFLES.

Less time outside during

winter means less sunlight,

which is a key source

of immunity-boosting

vitamin D.

Low temps outside and blasting heat inside lead to dry, flaky skin.

When the days get shorter, so does your brain’s supply of the

feel-good chemical serotonin

Cold weather can actually trigger hunger. Your brain knows

that eating raises your body temperature and warms you up.

Keep your pantry stocked with low-calorie,

high-density

foods that fill you up

faster.

Exercising in the cold can trick your whole system. You still

sweat, but the drier air zaps

perspiration away before you even notice. This can quickly lead to

dehydration. Take care to

replace the fluid you’re losing.

As winter progresses

and your moods get

frailer, if you eat carbs in

a calorie-controlled way, your brain can restore its serotonin to what it was in the summer.

Score your dose of

vitamin E, another

powerful skin

protector, by snacking on almonds or

pumpkin or sunflower seeds.
