ARRIVALPROCEDURESStudentswhoarenotbeingbusedshouldnotarrivebefore8:50a.m. in themorning,unlesstheyareintheAMC.A.R.E.programorareapartofabefore-schoolactivitysuchasDanceTroupe,amusicalrehearsal,etc.BusesandVansPleaseensure that your child knowshis/herbus letter.Eachmorning,busesandvanswillparkandunloadourPre-K-Grade4studentsonboththeparkinglot and main entrance sides of our building. Streets leading to the mainbuildingwillbeclosedat this time to regular traffic.Studentswill remainontheir buses until 8:50 am, at which time they will exit and move to theirdesignatedbuildingentrances.Asa safetyprecaution, all children shouldbereminded to walk on the portion of the sidewalk away from the curb.Additionally,4thGradeSafetyPatrolwillassistinbotharrivalanddismissal.CarRidersStudentsarrivingbycarmustbedroppedoff in frontof theEarlyChildhoodDevelopmentCenter.Supervisionis inplaceandchildrenareescortedtothemainbuildingbystaffandSafetyPatrol.Students arriving for AM C.A.R.E.mustuse theentrancenear thegymandfacultydiningroombetween7:30and8:30amandaparentmustescortandsignthemin.WalkersWalkersshouldenterthebuildingattheclosestentrance.

School achievement begins with regular attendance. Parents/ guardiansmustensurethatallschool-agedchildrenintheircareareinschoolontimedaily. Additionally, school personnel will communicate any attendanceproblemsorconcernstoparents/guardiansinatimelymanner.It is important to remember that parents/guardiansmust submit a note ormedicaldocumentationexplainingeachstudentabsence.Whenastudentisabsent for more than 3 consecutive school days, they are required tosubmit a medical excuse from their physician. Such notes must besubmittedwithinfive(5)daysofthestudent’sreturntoschool.UnderNewJerseylawandregulation,individualBoardsofEducationdeterminecategories of absences, which the District will consider “excused”. FranklinTownshipBoardofEducationPolicy5113onabsencesisavailableonthedistrictwebsite. Anyabsencethatdoesnotfallintooneofthecategorieslistedinthepolicyisconsidered“unexcused.”Notes must also be submitted for absences for family travel or vacations;performanceofhouseholdorbabysittingduties;andotherdaytimeactivitiesunrelatedtotheschoolprogram,howevertheyare“unexcused”absences.

Parentalpermissionisnotconsideredanexcusedabsence.

Ifaparent/guardian isplanninganextended leave fromschool formorethan10consecutivedays,theparent/guardianmustcometoFranklinParkSchool to complete an Extended Leave Form. Upon return, the parent/guardianmust reregister the student at the Board of Education buildinglocatedat1755AmwellRd.,SomersetNJ.

Whenastudentaccumulatesfour(4),eight(8),andten(10)daysofunexcusedabsences, parents/guardians will be notified. It is hoped that throughcommunicating andworking together, the parent/ guardian, student and theschoolwillbeabletodevelopandimplementeffectivestrategiesthatwillresultinimprovedstudentattendanceandacademicachievementIt should be noted that students who accumulate ten (10) unexcusedabsences or who show a pattern of truancy will be referred to the TruantOfficer.AdditionalunexcusedabsencesortruancywillresultinreferraltotheFranklinTownshipMunicipalCourt.Students must be present for a minimum of four hours to be consideredpresentforafulldayofschool.II.StudentTardinessAstudentisconsideredtardyifarrivalisafter9:05A.M.AstudentwhoarriveslatetoschoolmustreporttotheAttendanceOfficewherehis/hertimeofarrivalwillberecordedandalatepasswillbeissued.Excessivetardinesswillbeaddressedbytheprincipal.III.EarlyStudentDismissalAstudentdismissedearlymustbesignedout intheAttendanceOfficepriorto2:55pm.• Personalillnessasdeterminedbythenurseoradministration• Emergenciesthatrequireaneedforaparentorguardiantopersonallysigna child out of school. BIRTHDAYRECOGNITIONFranklinParkSchoolStaffarealwayshappytocelebrateastudent’sbirthday,andhavethereforedesignatedthelastfifteen(15)minutesofaselectdayatthe end of each month for the purpose of allowing grades Kindergarten-Grade4 students’birthdays tobe recognized. If youwould like to send inaspecial healthy snack on the designated Friday of themonth, noted below,pleasecontactyourchild'steacherbyMondayofthatweek.*Pre-Kstudentswillcelebratetheirbirthdaysonthedayoftheirbirthday.

Forallgradelevels,Pre-KtoGrade4,birthdaysnacksshouldbesimple.Pleaserefrain from sending in awhole birthday cake as this creates amore time-consumingsnackperiodthanourschedulesallow.Asimple,healthy,snackiseasytodistributeandwillbeappreciatedbyall.As you may know, New Jersey enacted a new School Nutrition Policy topromotehealthyfoodalternativestostudentsinpublicschools.Inadditiontochanges to thecafeteriamenu, thenewpolicy affects foods that are servedduringpartiesandbirthdaycelebrations.Sodaiscompletelyprohibited,asisall candyandall items thatcontain sugaras theprimary ingredient. Ifyouaresendingatreattocelebrateyourchild’sbirthday,muffins,fruitorsnackbagsareacceptable,i.e.Goldfish,pretzels,chexmix.PleaseDONOTsendingoodybags.

Kindly,checkwithyourchild’steacherortheschoolnurseaboutanypotentialfoodallergiesthatmaybeinyourchild’sclass.Lastly,pleaserememberthisisa special snack time treat and not a class party. CAFETERIA/RECESSYour child may buy lunch or milk, or bring lunch from home. Parents/guardians of children buying lunch are encouraged to purchase lunch inadvance. A checkmade payable to “FPS Food Services” can be sent to theschool inanenvelopewithyourchild. Indicateyourchild’sname, teacher’snameandstudentPIN/IDontheenvelope. Freeorreducedpricemealsareavailable to those who qualify and applications are sent home early in theschool year. Applications are also available in the main office. We arerequesting that ALL families complete and return the Free/Reduced Lunchpaperwork,asitaidsthedistrictinreceivingstatefunding.Franklin Park School implements a Recess-First Program, in which studentsparticipate in structured play for 20 minutes, followed by lunch for 20minutes. For the 2017-2018 academic year, the following schedule is inplace:

II.LunchTimeWhile in the cafeteria, children are assigned to tables by class and areexpected to behave in a calm, quiet and orderly fashion. The followingguidelines have been established in order to provide a safe and pleasantatmosphere:• Anadultinchargewillsendstudentstothelunchline.• All jackets, coats, etc. are tobe leftat the student’s cafeteria seatwhenthestudentsarecalledtothelunchline.

• Sincecuttinginlineisnotacceptablebehavior,anyonefoundcuttingwillbesenttothebackoftheline.

• Studentsmuststayintheirassignedseats.Permissionisnecessarytodisposeofgarbageortousethebathroom.

• Tablesmust be kept clean. Trashmust be picked up around the tableanddiscardedproperly.

• School rules, such aswalking at all times, using proper language andmanners,andrespectingothers,areenforcedinthecafeteria.

• Studentswhooccasionallyforgettheirlunchmoneymaycharge.C.A.R. E. EXTENDEDDAYPROGRAMIn an attempt to meet the demands of working parents, the Culture-Arts-Recreation-Enrichment (C.A.R.E.) Program has been created by the FranklinTownshipBoardofEducation,asafee-basedextendeddaycareprogram.Abalance of play, relaxation, nutritional foods, and learning activities areoffered both before and after school by a staff of experienced teachers,specialists, aides, and site managers. Themorning program begins at 7:30a.m., while the afternoon session concludes at 6:00 p.m., Monday throughFriday.

The Enrichment Program in Franklin Township is based onJosephRenzulli’s SchoolwideEnrichmentModel,whichprovidesenrichmentfor all students through a tiered system that consists of three types ofactivities. An integral part of the model includes project based learningactivitiesthatfocusondeveloping21stcenturyskillswithastrongemphasisonproblemsolving,creativityandcriticalthinking.For 2017-2018, Library/Media Center Enrichment will be provided to allstudents, grades 1-4, one time per cycle. Students will learn research andpresentationskillsbyworkingonscaffoldedprojects.

For2017-2018,ScienceEnrichmentwillbeprovidedtoallstudents,grades2-4,onetimepercycle. Ingrade2,ScienceEnrichmentwillbeapush-inclasswiththesciencespecialistandhomeroomteacher.Ingrades3and4,ScienceEnrichment,willbetaughtbythemath-scienceteacher.

The Science Specialist will pull out small groups during this time for GiftedScience Enrichment which will focus on engineering, technology, andapplications of Science, helping students to become independentresearchers. Grades3&4studentswillbeidentifiedtoparticipateinGiftedScienceEnrichmentprogramthroughamultiplemeasurescriteria.

GRADINGANDREPORTINGStudents inKindergartenthroughGrade4receivequarterly,standards-basedreport cards. Although you will have the opportunity to speak with yourchild’s teacher during their conference, the following is meant to be aguidelineofhowyourchild’sperformancewillbeevaluated:ExceedingStandards(E):Yourchildconsistentlymeetsgradelevelstandardswith independence and has the innate ability to consistently andindependentlygobeyondgradelevelstandards.MeetingStandardsIndependently(MI):Yourchildconsistentlymeetsgradelevelstandardswithindependence.Meeting Standards with Guidance (MG): Your child meets grade levelstandardswithoccasionalpromptingandguidance.Progressing towards Standards (P): Your child is progressing towardgradelevelstandardswithdirectandfrequentsupport.NotMeetingStandards (N):Yourchildisnotmeetinggradelevelstandardsevenwithmodificationsanddirectsupport.SCHOOLCOUNSELORSTwofulltimestudentschoolcounselorsareavailableduringtheschoolyear.Achild’sparentorteachermaymakeacounselingreferralatanytimeduringthe school year. isMrs.JenniferChernoski.Shecanbereachedat(732)297-5666,[email protected],Principal,shouldbecontactedwithanybullyingconcernsonourcampus.HOMEWORKMeaningful, interesting homework assignments that reinforce studentlearning and promote parental collaboration are an important part of astudent’slearningexperience.Typically,studentsmayreceive10minutesofhomework per day per grade level. Forexample, a first grade studentmayreceiveupto10minutesofhomeworkeachnight,whileathirdgradestudentmay receive up to 30 minutes of homework each night. These timeallocationsare inadditiontonightlyreadingasallstudentsarerequiredtoreadonadailybasisandrecordthatactivityontotheirreadinglog.Parents can help by setting aside a specific time and quiet workspace forhomeworkorschoolrelatedactivities.Studentsareresponsibleforanyclassworkandhomeworkmissedduetoabsences.*Parents are encouraged to reach out to their child’s teacher should astudentbestrugglingtocompletetheirworkinthesetimeframes.

LOSTANDFOUNDALostandFoundareaformostitems(lunchboxes,clothing,etc.)islocatedinthecafeteria. Eyeglasses,money,orothervaluablesthathavebeenlostwillbeheldinthemainoffice.MEDIACENTERStudents use the media center for instructional purposes with their class.Booksmaybecheckedout forup toa twoweekperiod. Students areheldfinanciallyresponsibleforlostordamagedbooks.MEDICATIONPleasefollowtheBoardofEducationpolicy ifyourchildrequiresmedicationof any kind. Medication is defined as any prescription drug or prescribedover-the-counterdrug.Allmedicationmustbedeliveredtotheschoolnurse

initsoriginal labeledcontainerandmustbeaccompaniedbyanotefromthephysician stating the name of the medication, the dosage and time ofadministration,itspurpose,andhowlongitistobeadministered.

• The parent must submit a written request that the medication beadministered.Formsareavailableinthenurse’soffice.

• Allmedicationwill be secured and dispensed by the school nurse (orparent).

NURSE/HEALTH SERVICEEmergencycareintheschoolislimitedtofirstaidforaccidentsorillnessthatoccur in school or on theway to school. In case of an accident or suddenillness in school, parents/guardians or alternate contacts are notified of thehealthemergencysothatthechildmaybetakenhomeortoaphysician.Theschoolcannotprovidetransportation.Inextremeemergencies,thelocalFirstAidSquadwillbecalled.Thedistrict requires that all newprekindergartenand kindergarten childrenhave a physical. In addition, all new students to the district (PreK-4)enteringfromoutofstatemustalsohaveaphysical.Weencourageyoutohave your family doctor perform the physical examination since he/she isfamiliar with your child’s health history. Students are escorted to a designated off-site location. Allproceduresareexplainedandpracticedwithstudents.Studentsareremindedtofollowsafetyrulesestablishedinthebuilding.Thereisnotalkingduringanevacuationdrill. SAFETYPATROLInadditiontocertifiedstaffbeingpositionedthroughoutthecampus,duringarrivalanddismissal,fourthgradestudentswillhavetheopportunitytoapplyandbeselectedfortheFranklinParksafetypatrol.Approximately80studentsserveinthisroleduringtheFallandSpringoftheschoolyear.

STRUCTURED PLAYIn order to provide students with a more structured environment duringrecess, variousdevelopmentally appropriateplayactivitieswill be scheduledon a rotating basis. Activities are supervised and may include: soccer,basketball, four square and/or blacktop games, track and field andplayground.Studentswillbeapprisedofthisscheduleinadvance.TELEPHONESStudents are not permitted to use cell phones during the school day. If aparenthasgiventheirchildpermissiontocarryacellphone, itshouldbeoffandstored intheirbackpacksduringthe instructionalday. Inthecaseofanemergency,achildcanbecalledfromaclassroomtospeaktoaparent.TEXTBOOKSStudents are responsible for returning the textbooks issued to them. In theeventofalossordamage,theywillbefinanciallyresponsible.VISITORSFranklin Park School welcomes parents, community members, professionalguests, and other visitors.
