The grandstand lineup for the 2011 Frank-lin County Fair, July 13-17, features country music star Kelli Pickler on Saturday night, the Charlie Daniels Band on Friday, and contem-porary Christian music star Lincoln Brewster on Thursday. The Barnes PRCA Rodeo will be held on Wednesday night and Figure-8 and Cruiser Car Races will close out the fair on Sunday night. Fairgoers can see all five nights of enter-tainment with a pay one price (POP) pass that will be $25 through July 7. Starting July 8, POP passes will be $35. You must have a POP pass for the Kelli Pickler and Chalie Daniels Band shows. Individual tickets for Lincoln Brewster, the PRCA Rodeo, Figure-8 and Cruiser Car Races will be available for $15. POP passes for the Franklin County Fair, in Hampton, will go on sale May 1. The annual parade will be held on the eve of the fair, Tuesday, at 5 p.m., sponsored by the Hampton Area Chamber of Commerce. The parade lineup is at the high school at 4 p.m. and goes through downtown Hampton. There is no entry fee or pre-registration for the parade. A.J. Lutter, an acclaimed chain saw artist, will carve sculptures from logs in the Franklin County lumber Arena. They will be sold at auction on Sunday. The Franklin County Fair has a historical

emphasis that has helped make the fair one of the best free attractions in the state. Grand-pa’s Farm is 40 acres lying just west of the fairgrounds. During the fair, it offers a look back at farming practices around the turn of the century. All phases of farming are dem-onstrated with antique machinery powered by vintage tractors, steam engines and horses. The farm also features Grandpa’s Tractor Cruise sponsored by Garst Seeds on Wednes-day and an overload draft horse pull by the Iowa Draft Horse Pullers on Saturday. Pleasant Hill is a complete turn of the cen-tury town built on the fairgrounds. The town is alive with people in dress of the early 1900s, giving demonstrations and selling crafts and treats from that period. The Franklin County Historical Museum will also be open daily during the fair. A complete schedule of events was not available at the time of printing. When avail-able, it will appear online at www.franklin-countyfair.com.Aboout the artists In the fall of 2005, Kelli Pickler auditioned in Greensboro, North Carolina, for American Idol. She reached the show’s final six, signed with BNA Records and recorded her first al-bum in whirlwind sessions sandwiched be-tween dates on the Idol tour. Pickler established herself as both a singer and a songwriter with her first hit, “Red High

Heels.” Her debut album, Small Town Girl, produced two follow-up hits, “I Wonder” and “Things That Never Cross A Man’s Mind.” Her second album, Kellie Pickler, for which she co-wrote half the songs, spawned the uplifting “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful” and “Best Days of Your Life.” The

latter, co-written with Taylor Swift, quickly became the biggest hit of her career, rising to the Billboard Top Ten and earning gold in digital sales. She has won three 2008 CMT Music Awards, Breakthrough Video, Tearjerker Video and Performance of the Year, all for “I Wonder,” and has earned many other award nomina-tions. She has received two ASCAP awards, citing “Red High Heels” and “I Wonder” as among the most performed country songs of the year. Both her albums debuted number one country and top ten overall in Billboard, a feat equaled by only six other females in country music. She has hosted “The View,” graced the cover of USA Weekend, and served as correspondent in Times Square for “Dick Clark’s Rockin’ Eve” with Ryan Seacrest in order to usher in 2009. Music icon Charlie Daniels, known for his fiddle playing, has been performing more than 50 years. His style is a mixture of rock, coun-try, bluegrass, blues, and gospel. Daniels’ rebel anthems “Long Haired Country Boy” and “The South’s Gonna Do It” propelled his 1975 collection, Fire On the Mountain, to double platinum status. He won a Grammy Award in 1979 for “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and the following

year, the song became a major crossover suc-cess on rock radio stations, after its inclusion

on the soundtrack for the hit movie “Urban Cowboy.” The CDB appeared in the movie. The song is still receiving regular airplay on classic rock and country stations. Daniels and the CDB have earned awards from the Gospel Music Association, the Coun-try Music Association and Academy of Coun-try Music. The CDB’s current CD release on Blue Hat Records is Land That I Love, a patri-otic compilation including two new cuts, “Iraq Blues” and “What This World Needs is a Few More Rednecks.”

As a proud member of the Grand Ole Opry, Daniels regularly performs on the Opry. He

is a member the Musicians Hall of Fame, and was honored with a Star on Music City’s Walk of Fame. He was honored by the Pentagon with the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service award for his support of military personnel and was also awarded the AmVet Silver Helmet award, an annual award that recognizes excellence and achievement in Americanism, defense, rehabili-tation, congressional service and other fields, by the AmVets, an organization formed by World War II veterans.

It is the first time that the fair has headlined a contemporary Christian artist at the grand-stand. Lincoln Brewster released a self-titled debut album in 1999. In 2000, he released Live to Worship followed by Amazed in 2002, All to You: Live in 2005 and Let The Praises Ring: The Best of Lincoln Brewster in 2006. In early 2007, Brewster attained his first number one Christian radio hit when the song “Everlasting God” from Let the Praises Ring. It hit the top of the chart and stayed there for four weeks. At the same time, his song “Love

The Lord” climbed to number three, giv-ing him two songs in the top 20 at the same time. His latest album, Today is the Day, is a 10-track studio album that has been hailed by critics as his best effort to date. Brewster was born in Fairbanks, Alaska, and he eventually relocated to California. While working as a store clerk he did a few radio commercials and started making demos, including an instrumental demo that opened the door for a meeting in Los Angeles with Dave Weiderman, artist relations manager for Guitar Center. Weiderman was so impressed, that he sent Lincoln to meet with Sony A&R

label rep Randy Jackson (of “American Idol” fame). One afternoon while practicing his guitar, he received a call from Steve Perry, the former lead vocalist for Jour-ney. He later found out that Randy Jackson had passed his demo tape on to Perry, who liked what he heard. At age 19, he gave up his day job at a local store was catapulted into the world of a rock star. Within months, he was co-writing and recording Perry’s solo project, For The Love Of Strange Medicine, and leaving to go on a na-tionwide tour with one of the biggest names in rock/pop history. Although it was the opportunity of a lifetime for a young man, the tour life

left him unfulfilled and empty. Referring to the fans who crowded the stage nightly, Lin-coln says, “We were receiving all of the wor-ship… that’s just not what my life is about.” When the tour ended, Lincoln decided to turn down all other offers from mainstream bands. He now tours and makes guest appear-ances at churches, festivals and events across the country. As one woman put it, “Lincoln’s music is life-changing. It’s so amazing to see how his music can bring Christ into a life, one song, just one time and it changes everything.”

Beeds Lake - Fun For All Agesthe handicapped-accessible state park is one of the most popular attractions in Franklin County. Beeds Lake is an ideal place for a family cookout with many grassy and shaded picnic areas to provide oppor-tunities for relaxation. A major attraction is the former beach concession, which has been renovated into a lodge. The lodge is available for rentals at a cost of $80 on weekends and $40 during the week plus tax. It has a large amount of seating, a kitchen,

and French doors that open lakeside and to the south. A rustic shelter, with electrical service is available and may be reserved for $25, plus tax.

The shelter and lodge may be re-served through the park reservation sys-tem online. The sandy beach is located on the west side of the cause-way. Although no life-

guard is on duty, the beach area is always open and is a great place for young and old to enjoy the water on a hot summer day. The lake is a popular destination for an-glers year-round. Walleyes, bass, catfish, panfish and tiger muskies are available. A fishing jetty and dock are located on the south shore of the lake and are accessible to people who are mobility impaired. Beeds Lake is a popular boating spot due to its scenic beauty. Motors of all horsepower may be used, but must be op-erated at no-wake speed. A modern boat ramp is located on the southern shore of the lake near the beach area. The campground at Beeds Lake has 144 sites, 99 with electricity. Modern rest-rooms and shower facilities are available, as well as a sanitary dump station. Half of the campsites can be reserved online, and half are available for self-registration on a first-come, first-served basis. night for a basic unit in the non-electric area, for up to six people, from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The office of the park ranger is located in a clearing between the south picnic grounds and the campgrounds. Iowa does not have a fee to use its state parks, but you should take a few garbage bags. You are responsible for removing your own trash from the park. For information about Beeds Lake, call 641-456-2047. Beeds Lake State Park provides more than just recreation, a stroll through serene nature and view of Iowa’s rural beauty. It also provides a taste of Iowa’s rich history. Listed on the National Register of His-toric Places, the park and man-made lake feature structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depres-sion years of the 1930s. The CCC cluster includes the spillway, causeway, bath-house and concession stand. Beeds Lake dates back to 1857 when Hampton pioneer T.K. Hansberry built a flour mill near Spring Creek northwest of town. Hansberry’s mill was constructed just downstream from the current dam near the bridge that crosses the creek on the east side of the park. To generate enough water pressure to turn the large water wheel to power the mill’s grinding machinery, Hansberry dammed up the

continued from page 12creek to create the west arm of the lake. In 1864 he sold the 40-acre lake to Wil-liam Beed, who put in the long causeway. In 1904 the flour mill discontinued opera-tion. At first, support for a park financed by local businesses was a popular idea, but the plans never materialized. As a result, the lake was drained and the land returned to farming. BUT THAT wasn’t the end. In the ear-ly 1930s, the Iowa State Fish and Game Commission approved a plan for a state park at the site — if the community would provide the land. The proposed rejuvenation of old Beeds Lake that was put to a vote stipu-lated that Franklin County would issue $50,000 in bonds for the purpose of ac-quiring the land and erecting a dam. The proposal was defeated by a small margin because it was estimated the cost to tax-payers would amount to $100,000. Another attempt to develop the area came in 1934 when an Izaak Walton League committee began to make plans for the construction of the lake and devel-opment of the surrounding area. Although land prices were depressed during this era, lake owners sold their land for the proj-ect. Lots on the north shore sold for $125 each.

The money was turned over to the state requiring the state to hold title to the lake bed and all land within 300 feet of the shore. After all lots were sold, a drawing was held to see who would receive each lot. The city of Hampton then approved $8,000 in bonds to finance the renovation of the lake. In 1934 the state stepped in to develop the property into a state park. The dam, bathhouse and several other projects were started by the CCC, a program launched under President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal to ease unemployment among young men in the U.S. during the Great

Depression. The CCC camp moved to Hampton in July 1934 with 195 men in camp. On Aug. 31 the construction of a permanent camp was started at the Franklin County Fairgrounds. The camp included nine bar-racks, a hospital, mess hall, recreation building, combination bathhouse and la-trine, officers’ quarters and an administra-tion building. Construction of the dam began in March 1935. The men worked two shifts of eight hours each at either the rock quar-ry or the dam. In May the Spring Creek channel was blocked through the old dam so that water backed up into the lake bed west of the spillway. The spillway was 170 feet long and the dam rose 40 feet above the rock founda-tion which was eight feet below the wa-

ter level. The dam was 55 feet wide at the base and 13 feet wide at the top. Laborers also forged a truck trail and three miles of foot trails into the public areas of the park. Fifty-five acres of na-tive trees were planted including 10,000 donated by a Hampton nursery. Improvements were made to the 120-acre lake bed, sloping the banks and rip-rapping where necessary. Fish shelters were constructed and the old mill pond was rebuilt to create a filtering house and a fish-rearing pond. Two public rest-rooms were constructed at the picnic area and parking space for 300 vehicles was cleared away. By the fall of 1935 the dam was complete and the lake was filled. The cost of the entire project was more than $1 million. In September 1935 the state conser-vation commission stocked the new lake with 12,500 smallmouth bass and 12,000 crappies. In 1938 the lake was stocked with more crappies and smallmouth bass, bluegills and largemouth bass. To allow the fish to multiply, the lake was closed to fishing for two years. In 1940, a 30-acre tract of land east of the lake was purchased for fish-rearing ponds. Walleyes and fingerlings raised there were stocked in many lakes through-out the state, including Clear Lake. Camping came to Beeds Lake in 1958.

continued from page 13

A four-acre campground was built on the southeast side of the park and new boat ramps were added. When severe bank erosion occurred in 1960, 1,000 tons of rip-rapping was com-pleted in February 1961. The rocks were dumped on the ice along the bank and set-tled into place when the ice melted in the spring. The following Oct. 15, more acres of the west of the beach were purchased for picnicking, giving the park access to the entire shoreline of the lake. In 1968 land in the southeast part of the park near the camping area was pur-chased, and new showers and electrical hookups were added. The county road that passed on what is now park property was also changed to its current location. The lake was drained in 1971 to get rid of rough fish. In 1982 it was again drained to reinforce the dam when engineers had determined that the dam could be tipped over in the event of a 100-year flood. It was then restocked. In 1997, the nonprofit Friends of Beeds Lake group spoke of draining the lake again but was told it would have to come up with the funds. After the draft of a 2010 watershed management plan, fund-ing was obtained in Fall 2010 for a study to demonstrate the need of dredging the west end of the lake.

Franklin County offers plenty of historical sites for the person who likes to take a trip through the past. Most of the sites are open by appointment, but several have regu-lar hours. Your best bet is to call ahead to

discover some treasures sure to make you smile, and remember. • Franklin County Historical Museum, Hampton: Take a nostalgic step back in time when you visit the Franklin County Histori-cal Society Museum complex in Hampton. Located at the county fairgrounds along Iowa Highway 3 on the western edge of Hampton, the museum features outstanding exhibits of pioneer Franklin County up to the not-so-distant past. Among the new exhibits for 2001 are those centering on: washing and laundry display from about 1900; a doctor’s ex-hibit with a restored medical chair; authors of Franklin County; hair wreaths and hair jewelry from about 1900; women in the military; postcard exhibit; and a refrigera-tion unit that includes a display from the old Beeds Mill Pond, where there was an ice house. The museum was opened in 1981 and was quickly filled with historic memora-bilia. An addition was completed in 1994. The museum includes a large exhibit hall with several displays, a library full of price-less archives, a machinery hall that dates back to the settler days, a special room to display Franklin County 4-H/FFA trophies, pictures, uniforms and other memorabilia

that has been donated to the museum over the years, and an impressive collection of artifacts, ranging from an 80-year-old corn thresher and Indian arrowhead to a 19th century wedding dress and an early voting machine. The museum spans all eras of the coun-ty’s history. You can take a look at the pre-historic mastodon bones found in a gravel pit near Geneva or examine the tools of the first white settlers or view a Japanese avia-tor’s uniform. Several period groupings, including a small country classroom and an early farm kitchen, are among the “must-sees” when visiting the museum. Period clothing, paintings, books and utensils de-tail the pioneer history of Franklin County. Genealogy and history buffs won’t want to overlook the cataloged photo display fea-turing subjects from Civil War days to his-torical snapshots of the county’s towns and community leaders. Catering to research-ers, the museum also contains an extensive archive selection containing court records, bound volumes of the county’s newspapers, club record books, scrapbooks, etc. Hamptonites featured in the museum in-clude: • Dr. Milton S. It was restored for use as an exhibit hall specializing in railroading his-tory. The depot features a working order board and signals, telegraph, benches and a brick walkway. Sitting on the stretch of track next to the depot is a 40-year-old caboose that was a gift from a Waterloo businessman. The Il-linois Central Gulf caboose arrived at its new home four years ago and has been completely renovated for touring and remi-niscing. ton: The most photographed and visible structure in Franklin County is the Franklin County Courthouse, located in downtown Hampton. Built in 1890 and 1891, it is “a building of harmonious proportions, pleas-ing architectural lines and substantial con-struction.” It cost an astounding $60,000 to construct. It is 72-by-102 feet and reaches 133 feet to the top of the dome, which in-cludes a clock on each side and a chime. The building, which is on the National

Register of Historic Places, was restored in 1970. The courthouse is open for business from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Fri-day. If you want a tour, call 641-456-5622 to schedule a time. • Memorial Hall, Hampton: It is the

only “Soldiers Memorial Hall” in Iowa and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1890 after the Iowa General Assembly authorized counties to establish a tax to build such monuments to honor those Civil War veterans from the county who were deceased. The building’s unique architecture makes it attractive to visitors. The soldier standing sentinel over the building was refurbished in 1992. And the marble tablets inside the building, bear-ing the names of the veterans, are truly one-of-a-kind. Today, the hall is used for meet-ings of the local American Legion Post and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Visitors may see Memorial Hall by ap-pointment. Appointments can be made by calling 641-456-5670 or 641-456-5620 be-tween 8 and 11 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. • Old Stone House, rural Geneva: The first permanent structure in Franklin Coun-ty, built in 1854, it is still standing today. A prairie palace in its day, the house consists of seven rooms, including two bedrooms on the second floor, a full basement and a pan-try off the kitchen. The structure was built with limestone from the banks of nearby Maynes Creek. The house was inhabited until 1956. In 1979, the property was deed-ed to the Franklin County Historical Soci-ety, which converted the home into a pio-

neer museum, opening in June 1985. The exterior was repaired in 2009. The interior is under construction. Plans are to make it a living museum with quilting classes, spell-ing bees and tours for children. For more

information, visit oldstonehouse.org. Ap-pointments for private tours can be made by calling Deb Brown at 641-580-0103. • Maysville Schoolhouse, rural Hamp-ton: The town of Maysville was settled in 1856. It grew to 150 people and featured a post office, hotel, two blacksmith shops, two stores, a steam saw mill and a school. Maysville citizens dreamed of making their town the county seat, but the railroad went through Hampton instead. By 1890, the little town had died. All that remains today is the two-story

limestone schoolhouse built in 1867. Situ-ated on a crest of a hill and visible from U.S. Highway 65 about 5 miles south of Hampton on 95th Street, the school has sur-vived a full century after the town’s death. It has been used as a community center, a site for scouting programs and campouts, and until recently served as the official vot-ing place for Reeve Township. The school is not open on a regular basis, but may be toured by contacting Franklin County His-torical Museum at 641-456-5777. • REA Power Plant Museum, rural Hampton: Located 4 miles south of the Franklin County Fairgrounds in Hampton and 1 1/2 miles west on gravel roads, the Corn Belt Power REA plant was the first farmer-owned power plant in the nation to receive an REA grant and only the second in the nation to go “on line” in the 1930s. The plant was given to the Franklin County Historical Society and has been turned into a rural and electrical museum. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located directly north of the Frank-lin County Fairgrounds, the Harriman-Nielsen Historic Farm contains the fas-cinating history of a pioneer doctor, an early blacksmith, and an immigrant Dan-ish farm family. The farm, consisting of twenty acres of land, a house built in 1881 and the origi-nal dairy barn were given to the Franklin County Historical Society by Nielsine Nielsen, the last surviving daughter of the Danish farm family. The house is listed on the National Register for Historic Places The Franklin County Historical Society established a Board of Directors to over-see the renovation of the historic farm. Hundreds of hours have already been do-nated to the renovation process and have given the old farmstead a remarkable facelift. The dairy barn has been restored, work on the house continues, renovation of the outbuildings has begun, corn will be planted in the field and the garden pro-duces a bountiful harvest each year. There are events held at the farm each year that showcase the history of the prop-erty. During the Franklin County Fair, the house is open for tours. The first Sunday in October brings the Fall Festival which

Harriman-Nielsen Historic Farm

Joe Pitsor tells some festival-goers about the tall corn contest, one of the more recent features of the annual shindig.

Absolutely perfect weather on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, brought a huge crowd out to the annual Harriman Nielsen Farm fall festival in Hampton. Event organizers said the crowd was the largest they have seen, and festival-goers were treated to old-fashioned games, home-grown bean soup and other goodies, and kids had the chance to try hand-cranked apple-peeling and corn-shelling.

features a pumpkin patch, music, bean soup made from beans grown in the gar-den and much, much more. The renovated barn is available for rental. Stop by the farm and view a part of Hampton’s history. Contact the Franklin County Historical Museum to arrange a tour at 641-456-5777.

• Dows Depot/Iowa Welcome Center, Blacksmith Shop & Mercantile, Dows: More than 7,500 people visit the Dows Depot Welcome Center each year. The center is about two miles from the in-terstate. The historical society installed a sequence of Burma Shave-type signs along the way to let drivers know they were still on course after hearing from farmers that drivers were stopping, looking puzzled and turning around. The historical society runs the depot, blacksmith shop, mercantile, Evans prairie house and country school with largely volunteer labor.

The Dows Depot Welcome Center in-cludes railroad memorabilia and other historical items from the town. A man named Stephen Dows brought the railroad from Holland through the town of Otisville to Clarion in 1880. Otisville was renamed in Dows’ honor. By 1885, a few more lines connected to Dows. The depot was built in 1896 and operated until 1980. In 1987, the Dows Historical Society bought the depot. More than 120 vol-unteers worked on restoring it for nine months, and the group received a state

matching grant to help open the build-ing as an official State of Iowa Welcome Center. The welcome center has information about Iowa attractions, restrooms, a telephone and a gift shop with wines, jams, crafts and antiques.

The Dows Mercantile housed general stores, a hardware store, hairdressers, a veterinarian and apartments over the

years. The historical society purchased it in 1987, like the depot, to prevent it from being demolished. It opened in 1989 and now features folk art, crafts

and fine art from Iowa artists and man-ufacturers and an antique mall. The Crème de la Crème ice cream parlor at the back left corner of the mercantile building also serves, sandwiches, soups and coffee. Locals who gather there for coffee shorten its name to The Crème.

The Blacksmith Shop was willed to the historical society in 1990. Until that time, Fred Quasdorf owned and oper-ated it, according to museum staff. The Quasdorf Blacksmith and Wagon Museum, as it is fully called, is said to be one of the best-equipped blacksmith shops in the Midwest. Belts and pulleys move through the original thick plank floor to the large motors in the basement. The belts and pulleys also power the band saws and a drill on the main floor. The upper floor was used to make wagons, wagon wheels, and wooden equipment. There is no admission charge for self-guided or guided tours. The Evans Little Prairie House was donated in 2005, when the descendants of Mr. and Mrs. Ingebret Evans chose to move it off the homestead it occupied

`rather than demolish it. The Evans family had 14 children and raised 12 of them in the 16 by 14 square foot, two room, two story house. As many as 10 Evans children, plus

the parents, lived in the house at any one time. It has modest furnish-ings: a bed, a rocker made by Ingebret Evans and a stove. Displays describe the history of the house and the pro-cess of moving it off the homestead. Hours the welcome center operates are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. (Dows sits on the line between Wright and Franklin counties.) The Dows Historical Society and the Dows Community moved the building from its original site and placed it on a permanent foundation near the Wel-come Center and Mercantile. It was re-

stored inside and out and is furnished with original desks, blackboards, and books. The grounds are planted with native trees and shrubs. The historical society gives a tour of the schoolhouse to Clarion-Goldfield students, a school district that includes Dows, each fall. Tours can be given to students from any district, volunteers emphasized. The school is open for tours by call-ing 515-852 -3595.

Franklin County City Parks and CelebrationsHampton parks Hampton has plenty of places to play, including its extensive city park system.

Band Shell Park features the second-oldest band shell in Iowa. It was built in 1959 at a cost of $4,400 using funds from an estate and the park board. In 2010, the band shell was deemed struc-turally unsound. After pro-bono consult-ing from RDG Planning and Design in Des Moines, the community pitched in to raise more than $90,000, enough to re-store the historic structure and begin an endowment for future improvements. The band shell is home to summer concerts from the Hampton municipal band. Be sure to stop by on Tuesday eve-nings in June, when band concerts fol-low an evening of family activities called Tuesdays on the Town, sponsored by the Hampton Area Chamber of Commerce.

Progress Park is on First Street NW. It currently includes a baseball diamond, basketball and tennis courts and play-ground equipment. A new aquatic center with four waterslides is slated for comple-tion in May 2011. Visit www.hamptonia.us for more information. Weekdays, rates

may also be obtained by calling Hampton City Hall at 641-456-4853. Plans include a new tennis court surface, a skate park, play structures and sunshade shelters, as well as a trail segment. The trail will con-nect Progress Park to the Franklin well-ness center in eastern Hampton and to Beeds Lake State Park west of town and further, to Coulter in western Franklin County. The structural improvements to Progress Park, including the pool, recre-ational facilities and a 6-mile segment of the Rolling Prairie Trail, were to be par-

tially funded with community attraction and tourism (CAT) grant money from Vision Iowa. Funding and amount is contingent on project start and comple-tion time, among other factors.

Harriman Park, located on the north edge of Hampton on Highway 65, in-cludes several picnic shelters, play-ground equipment and fishing at the Spring Creek dam. The pond at Harriman Park was dredged in 1999 and 2000 and is full and ready for fishing. A four-season shelter was built in 2001 and features air condi-tioning. Nestled in a valley under many trees,

Harriman Park has long been a popular spot for family and class reunions as well as company picnics. East Park is on the east side of town along Highway 3. The park includes a disc golf course with a tricky water trap, soccer fields, a picnic shelter, playground equipment and wide open spaces. A shel-ter house and concession stand was con-structed with funds from Hampton Rotary Club and the city in 2009.

Shelters can be reserved by calling Hampton City Hall at 641-456-4853. To ensure that care is taken, the deposit is twice the rental fee.

Memorial Park is located on the city’s northwest side. It includes playground equipment, two shelters and room to play.

Hampton also takes great pride in its cemetery, on the east side of Highway 65, north of the creek. A new but identical, weather-resistant metal fence and road-work were slated for the 2011-2012 bud-get year after the community raised more than $30,000 for the cemetery projects. The planned Rolling Prairie Trail will run alongside the cemetery. Beeds Lake State Park, though near Hampton, is outside city limits and can be found under county parks.

Hampton happenings throughout the year will be described elsewhere in this guide. They include: Tuesdays on the Town; fireworks in July; the Franklin

County Fair; Summerfest; Holly Dazzle and the winter wine walk.

Latimer parks Latimer boasts two city parks. At West Park, many improvements have recently been made thanks to the ef-forts of both the Ladies Park Society and the town’s youth, including local 4-H and FFA chapters. The park sports new play-ground equipment, a renovated shelter house, tetherball courts, new picnic ta-bles, vintage lighting, and wide sidewalks allowing wheelchair access. A portable restroom is available. Updates at West Park were possible in 2011 because of extra grant money not yet spent on the project. Over at East Park, the summer is spent enjoying ball games at two diamonds, one for softball and one for baseball. The town also features a small Gaze-bo Memorial Park next to its post office. Visitors can enjoy a shady rest among the flowers.

Latimer Historical Museum The back rooms of Latimer City Hall house a museum dedicated to the town history.

Open regularly and available by ap-pointment, visitors learn about Latimer’s past through historic memorabilia from when the town was first established. With an ever-changing display of ex-hibits, the museum currently showcases a restored tractor, a miniature panorama of a local farm, and an old fashioned farm-house kitchen. Call Latimer City Hall for more infor-mation, 6641-579-6452 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

together a day of fun for the town. Games and activities aplenty are there to enjoy for kids of all ages.

Coulter Coulter’s city park boasts play equip-ment and shelters, including a gazebo. The gazebo was replaced in 2010 after the former structure fell casualty to a tree toppled in a summer storm. The cemetery also received a new road, thanks to a Franklin County community foundation grant.

Coulter Fun Day Coulter Fun Day includes a parade, a hamburger lunch and evening fireworks. The squashed gazebo and flooding didn’t squash or dampen town spirit in 2010, as the celebration was held in the wake of the FEMA-declared natural disaster.

HansellHansell City Park Hansell’s city park features a softball diamond, playground equipment, a wood-en ship, and a shelter house. The wooden ship, made by the Amish,

was a gift from the Sue Rowen family to honor late mayor, David Rowen. Community betterment funds allowed for building the shelter house. The softball diamond is open until dark. Softball teams wishing to reserve the diamond should call city clerk Deanna Genz at 641-494-8425. A portable restroom is available May through October.

SheffieldSheffield Legion Park The city’s primary park is supported by both the city and the local American Legion. Featuring a playground, gazebo, and a war memorial, the park is a central activ-ity location for all ages. Two new little league ball diamonds will be open for games in spring 2011. Grass and lime have been lain. Electric-ity will be installed for the scoreboard. Bleachers are also in the works. The diamonds are located north of the high school baseball-softball complex at the corner of Cleveland and Thompson streets in Sheffield. Junior and Betty Edg-ington donated seven acres of land for the fields.

Fortunately, local businesses and con-tractors are willing to donate work to the cause.

Marie Ayers Park Sporting a shelter with electricity and brand new playground equipment, Marie Ayers Park is strategically located next to the town’s swimming pool and school

football field.Sourdough Day Sheffield’s Sourdough Day will be Aug. 20, 2011. Located in the park, it features food,

AckleyPrairie Bridges Park Prairie Bridges Park and Campground is on County Highway S56 north of Ack-ley. It has won awards from North Iowa Area Development and State of Iowa For-estry. The park boasts 101 acres of prairie, timber, stocked fishing ponds, a swim-ming area and three miles of trails to bike and walk on. Trails take visitors through forested areas, among native grasses that span 18 acres in Jacob’s Prairie, and alongside (or over) streams and ponds via eight unique and historical bridges. The recreation trail connects to town. Amenities include a modern camp-ground with 120 sites, most complete with 30/50 amp electrical service, water, and septic connections, plus two full rest-room and shower facilities. Areas of the grounds have passed certifications for ADA accessibility. There are 30 basic campsites, and pull-through sites and septic sites are available. Campsites are $14 for electri-

Aquatic center, rec trail in the worksThe Hampton aquatic center is scheduled for completion in May of 2011. Admis-sion rates were to be set later in the spring. The Federal Highway Administration has approved the Rolling Prairie recre-ational trail plans. It notified the Franklin County Conservation board of this in late February of 2011. Both are part of an improvement proj-ect for which Hampton received a Vision Iowa grant in October of 2010. Slated improvements to Progress Park, on First Street NW, include: a new aquatic center to replace the closed pool; a 6-mile trail segment running from nearby Beeds Lake State Park to the Franklin County Well-ness Center; a new tennis court surface; a skateboard park; play structures and sun-shade shelters. FORE! Play On Fun Golf Courses All Around The Area Iowans love their golf and that’s because there is so much golf available for the average hacker and the fanatic alike. Hampton is home to the pres-tigious Hampton Country Club, previously voted the best nine-hole course in Iowa. It features established trees, a short but tight layout, and some wickedly tricky greens that always leave golfers shaking their heads. The signature hole is the 255-yard par four sixth. If you hit a big drive straight, you have a chance for an eagle. Mess up the drive, and you might wind up with a six, or worse! The course is private, but if you live outside the county, you can play on certain days. Call 641-456-3256 for more information. The newest course in the area is the Ridge Stone Golf Club on the southwest side of Sheffield. This pub-lic-play-links-style layout has it all - a few trees, difficult bunkers, water haz-ards, elevated and fast greens and beau-tiful tees. The par five seventh hole is a dandy, featuring a pond on the right

and a creek on the left off the drive. The creek meanders about 70 yards in front of the green, making going for it in two a hazard. The two-tiered green, protected by bunkers and trees, adds a little more spice. Call 641-892-8040 for information. If you want to work on your short

Franklin County has 3 courses. One private and 2 public.

game, try the Latimer Golf Club. It’s easy to walk as the course is mostly flat, and the holes are short. But the elevated greens and a few well-placed bunkers make scoring well very difficult. If the bump-and-run is your shot, this is your course! The course is open to the public. Call 641-579-6090 for details. Another well-kept se-cret is the Dows Golf Course on the east side of Dows. This course has challenging holes of all lengths and widths. The course is

played by a corps of loyal golfers who take in the condition of the course. You’ll enjoy the blind tee shot through the saddle as you near the end of your round — especially if you hit it well. Call 515-852-4751 for information.

Public Shooting Range The range is located two miles north of Hansell on County Road S-56. Range users will be asked to pay a $5 per visit fee to help cover the cost of de-veloping and maintaining the two-year-old facility. A $40 season pass is also available. The North Hansell Range is part of the Franklin County Conservation Depart-ment, and was built entirely by volunteers and donations next to the site of the former Franklin County Landfill. It features a shotgun range with a sport-ing clays launcher, a rifle range with target berms at 100, 200, 225, 250, 300 and 325 yards, and a pistol range with target areas at 15, 25, 50 and 100 yards. One of the unique features of the rifle and pistol ranges are the reactive steel tar-gets. Range users may bring paper targets to shoot at, of course, but they do not need to. On the pistol range, there are swinging steel plate targets at 15 and 25 yards, along with a special “dueling tree.” On the rifle range, there are swinging steel plate targets at each of the target berms ranging in size from a deck of playing cards up to two-

feet-by-two-feet. Shooters can both see and hear when they hit the steel plate targets. The North Hansell Range is handi-capped accessible, and features a restroom on site. It also offers picnic tables, and is perfect for family outings. For more information on the North Han-sell Range, or to become a range volunteer, contact the Franklin County Conservation Office.

Better For Business Locating your business in Frank-lin County is simply better for business because of what we bring to the table. Workforce is one example. Our labor-force is business-friendly, skilled and eager to get to work. Location is another advantage. We are under a day’s drive to major markets in the Midwest such as Minneapolis and Chicago. Assets in Franklin County such as buildings and developed industrial land are much more affordable than other parts of the state. Our incentive packag-es and professional project support have often tipped the scales in our favor and the overall cost of doing business is cer-tainly a reason Iowa is better for business - CNBC recently ranked us as having the lowest cost of doing business in the Na-tion. Ease of getting around is another reason business can do better here. Com-mutes are often under 15 minutes and traffic jams consist of three pickups and a Chevy. Being on Interstate-35 and High-ways 65 and 3 so your product travels smoothly doesn’t hurt either. A Franklin County location can be better for your business because you

would be in a community of profession-als bent on success . Interestingly enough many started as Franklin County entre-preneurs. Sukup Manufacturing’s world headquarters are located in Sheffield. The multi-state Kum N’Go Convenience Store chain got its start here and we are also proud to be home to ABCM Corpo-ration of Hampton, an industry leader in providing the highest quality care to the elderly. We invite you to consider a location in one of the fine communit ies of Franklin County, a place better for your b u s i n e s s … better for your life. F r a n k l i n County Devel-opment are the people to con-tact for busi-ness start-ups, e x p a n s i o n s

and new locations in Hampton and all of Franklin County. Please feel free to call Karen at 641-456-5668 or [email protected] for more information or a tour of buildings and sites. We pledge confidentiality, quick response and the highest degree of professionalism.

Composer George Gershwin unwittingly described Franklin County in his song Sum-mertime from the opera Porgy and Bess. “Summertime, and the livin’ iz eeeezzeee. Fish are jum-pin’ and the corn iz high” Ok, he didn’t say corn but you get the drift. Liv-ing is laid back and easy in Franklin County which makes it better than many other parts of the country. We can thank the people for that, but more about laid back and easy later. First let’s talk education. Little ones get a great start at a number of pre-schools in the county. K-12 students receive a quality education in any of four public school dis-tricts and with a student to teacher ratio of 11:1 your student will get the individual at-tention they deserve. Surely that is better. If a parochial environment is more to your lik-ing the St. Paul Lutheran School in Latimer provides a nurturing school experience for K-8th graders. Go Bulldogs! Go Hawks! Go Cadets! Go Cougars! Higher education is within easy reach with community colleges in neighboring Mason City and Iowa Falls and 4-year uni-versities are about an hours drive away. Ex-tracurricular activities abound in all schools, providing a well-rounded experience for students and a fun, social environment for

the parents. Healthcare that won’t be compromised. The Franklin General Hospital in Hamp-ton covers the full continuum of primary healthcare and is affiliated with the award-

winning Mercy Health Network of North Iowa. Healthcare is convenient with family practice medical clinics located in Latimer, Hampton, Sheffield and Ackley where the practitioners will know you by name. Our communities also have trained responders for those unexpected emergencies and re-sponse times are nothing compared to what you might experience in a city. Another rea-

son living here can be better. Affordable housing. Yes, really. In tree-lined neighborhoods? Absolutely! The av-erage price for a home in Franklin County is around $65,000. A $65,000 home in Frank-lin County would cost you $85,000 in Ne-braska or Minnesota. Iowa’s statewide aver-age home price is $117,900 which is far less than the average home price in Minnesota at over $213,000.

Recreation and having fun. Now we’re getting to the laid back and easy part. Imag-ine the warmth of a summer’s day as it eases into evening. The steaks sizzle on the grill and the dog is under the table with a hopeful look in his eye. The neighbors are on their way over for an evening of laughs after hav-ing spent the afternoon drowning worms at Beeds Lake (saving the fish for a mid-winter fish fry). The sprinkler is making that “tch-tch-tch -thththhtht” sound and the kids are asleep after a day at the pool. The conversa-tion ranges from how to help out the elderly neighbor down the street to pheasant hunt-ing in the fall. They offer to help with the dishes and usually mean it. Put your feet up. It’s laid back. It’s easy. It’s Franklin County… better for your life.

Better For Your Life...
