Letter from the DirectorParks and Recreation as a Wellness Provider

If I asked you what words come to mind when you think of

Parks and Recreation, I bet you would say “fun” or “play”. While

these are great descriptors, I hope that you think of “fitness”

and “wellness” too.

I have found that people often overlook one of the biggest

benefits that Parks and Recreation offers, which is getting

people active and healthy. Fitness is important because 7 of

the 10 leading causes of death are due to chronic illnesses

which can often be prevented by adopting healthy behaviors.

This is especially needed in Franklin County where Carilion’s

recent Community Health Needs Assessment found that 30%

of people in Franklin County are obese and 26% of people

in Franklin County report “no leisure time physical activity”.

Getting active with Parks and Recreation will not only control

your weight and combat health problems but will also save

you money in medical expenses, improve your mood, and

boost your energy.

We know that walking and running is the most popular

recreational activity in Franklin County from a survey

conducted by CHA Consulting where they found that 71% of

people say they enjoy doing this. We have created a brand

new County-wide fitness event around this called, “Fit Feet”.

This program is designed so that you can participate right

there in your neighborhood at your own pace.

You can find more information on Fit Feet inside this program

guide on page 8 or by visiting FCFitFeet.com. I hope that you

take advantage of this program to improve your fitness and

well maybe have some fun and play a little too.

Q: What was your favorite thing about coaching 11U Softball this season? a: My favorite thing about coaching softball this season was the players on my team. The Lady Cavs worked hard but understood that the game was meant to be fun.

Q: Do you have any funny and/or inspirational stories you can share about this season?a: The best lesson that the Lady Cavs learned this year I think came from another team in the league. They suffered from injuries and scheduling conflicts that made it difficult to field a full team most of the year. The girls and coaches continued to give it their all, refusing to give up. In the final game that we played against them we had a four run lead late in the game. They continued to play hard and despite our girls playing one of their better games of the season they were able to come from behind and beat us. I didn’t realize until the game was over that it was the other teams first win of the season. This was a great lesson for every player and coach on the field that night. It showed that we should never give up even if the odds are stacked against us.

Q: Is softball the only thing you coach?a: Yes currently.

Q: When you are not coaching softball, what are you doing? a: I enjoy playing golf and softball.

Q: What advice or suggestions would you give to someone interested in coaching youth sports? a: Make the game fun for kids. It is our responsibility to teach the players about sportsmanship and teamwork. These positive lessons will be important in their lives. Carefully select your co-coaches. Dean Ferguson was my co-coach this year and he was a vital part of the Lady Cavs success.
