schools. We kindly ask families to donate any size of snack contribution to help
with this.
Recess - We provide 2-3 recesses for at least 20 minutes each day. During this time, we let the students participate in a semi-structured play time. Our staff are expected to facilitate games and support all children to be physically involved in an activity throughout the whole recess. Students get to choose which activity to participate in.
Clubs - All students in program will rotate through 2-8 week clubs and are led by our Program Leaders (or Program Assistants if a Program Leader is out). For example, a group will take Art for 2-8 weeks with their core Program Leader. They will then rotate to a different Program Leader for another 2-8 weeks of a different club (ie: Sports). This rotation goes on for the whole school year. With this rotation students will have the opportunity to experience a wide range of clubs. Examples of clubs offered for the year are, and not limited to, Cooking, Art, STEM, Sports and DIY. Our club curricula is written and developed by our staff. Our Clubs are geared towards project-based, exploration and hands on learning.

Statement Of Inclusive Practices Our ASLP strives to include all students and create a school climate of belonging and community by celebrating differences.
Basic Principles for an Inclusive ASLP
● Every student is important and it is essential for the educators in our program to embrace responsibility for the success of all students. Each of our students are full and accepted members of their school community.
● We recognize that each student is different and we aspire to implement a diverse set of support systems to help our students to be successful in a school environment.
● Inclusive education is not specifically about students with disabilities but relates to all students, with an emphasis on special population students, including at-risk, English Language Learners, culturally diverse, and LGBTQ students.
● There may be a continuing need for services provided outside of our program and our program strives to connect families with those services.
16
Francis Scott Key Elementary After-school Learning Program 2019-20
Key components of inclusive practices used in our ASLP that target social skills
and social climate are:
■ Team curriculum ○ To build a sense of community and teamwork both in small groups
and as a larger program. ■ Restorative practices
○ By using community circles on a daily basis to create social bonds between students, discuss problems, and share experiences.
○ When conflicts arise, our staff find time to mediate with conversations and use restorative questions to help students discover the impact of their actions and guide the students in finding an appropriate way to make things right with the people involved.
■ Celebration of individual identity and respecting the right of all members of
our program to freely express their: ○ Gender ○ Sexual Orientation ○ Personality ○ and Cultural Identity
■ Facilitation of lessons and conversations that serve to broaden the understanding of the FSK and San Francisco community which may include:
○ Populations of diverse socio-economic backgrounds ○ Different and possibly alternative types of family structures ○ Different cultural traditions
Our staff will incorporate these values of celebrating diversity into their clubs and community group times. Behavior Support It is the top priority of our staff to keep all students safe, both physically and emotionally. We also recognize that children in a school environment may exhibit certain unsafe behaviors at any time of day. It is a priority to support these 17
Francis Scott Key Elementary After-school Learning Program 2019-20
students to make the best decisions. We have several systems in place to support behavior when it occurs.
Positive Behavior Guidance in the Classroom
We work hard to set up an environment that encourages positive behavior on a daily basis.
Expectations are created and agreed upon during the first day of each week of camp by both the teacher and the students and are referred to throughout the week. The equity and the needs of all students are taken into account when creating these expectations.
Positive Reinforcement – once expectations are agreed upon, we reward positive behavior with positive behavior management tools. For example:
The Good Behavior Game – a chance for non-material rewards that are given on a regular basis to the class or small groups who earn points for positive behavior in the classroom.
Marble Jars- a chance for the whole group to earn rewards by filling up a jar with marbles. Following expectations and agreements are ways to fill up the jar.
Restorative Practices
When harm is done, it is important that there are consequences for unsafe or unkind actions. We believe in consistently following up with consequences if expectations are broken.
However, we believe that it is important for those consequences to be restorative and appropriately matched with the action.
Therefore, we try to take the following steps before giving consequences:
1. Figure out what happened and listen fully to all sides of a story
18
Francis Scott Key Elementary After-school Learning Program 2019-20
2. Work to find out the reason behind the action
3. Have a restorative conversation that lead to agreements on how to move forward
4. Give students a chance to think of a way to repair harm that matches the action
5. Find the root of any conflict between students in order to improve the relationship and avoid future challenges
We will always try our best to communicate with the family when a behavior issue or conflict arises. Each of our Program Leaders have 25 students to themselves and sometimes incidents go unseen. We encourage our students to seek help from a Program leader if a conflict arises.
*** This process can take time so sometimes issues will not be resolved in one day. If you disagree with the way that a staff member has handled a behavior issue or conflict, please reach out to a coordinator or manager directly and they will follow up with the program leader.
Conferences
It may be necessary to bring in a larger support team to brainstorm a success plan if a behavior plan isn’t working. This team consists of Site Coordinators, ASLP’s Student Support staff, program leaders, day-school faculty if necessary and should include the family. During a conference, the team may set a time-line for improvement with a plan for if the behavior does not improve. It is possible that our program might not be the best fit for a child and in some cases, we may need to suspend or exit a child after completing all other steps.
