1. Unlike the regular ER verbs that you have learned so far,
the verb tre is an irregular verb.
Page 4
These verbs do NOT follow a pattern. Instead of memorizing a
set of endings and applying them to the stem of an ER infinitive,
you will have to memorize the entire word.
Page 5
2. Conjugation for the verb tre
Page 6
Je suis Nous sommes Tu esVous tes Il/Elle/ est On Paul These
noun Anne subjects take Le garon the same form La fille as their
pronouns! Ils/Elles sont Paul et Lise These noun Anne et Lise
subjects take Les garons the same form Les filles as their
pronouns!
Page 7
NOTE: The framework of the chart is the same as what you
learned for ER verbs. You will need to memorize an entire word for
the forms of tre not just an ending!
Page 8
A. to describe Par exemple Je suis cool. Il est amricain. Vous
tes intelligent.
Page 9
B. to talk about location Par exemple Nous sommes Atlanta.
Elles sont en France. Tu es de Paris.
Page 10
To make a sentence with tre negative, you will still put ne and
pas around the verb. Note that ne will shorten down to n before a
vowel.

Affirmatif Je suis amricain.
Page 12
Ngatif Je ne suis pas amricain.
Page 13
Affirmatif Tu es amusant.
Page 14

To ask a question with tre, you can still use the four methods
previously introduced.
Page 20
Change the tone of your voice and stick a ? at the end of a
statement. Elle est amricaine? (Is she American?)
Page 21
Flip-flop the position of the subject and the verb and stick a
hyphen in between. Est-elle amricaine? (Is she American?)
Page 22
NOTE: You will not need the mystery t- for the il/elle form
this time!
Page 23
Place in front of any statement. Est-ce quelle est amricaine?
(Is she American?)
Page 24
Place at the end of any statement. (Like a tag question!) Elle
est amricaine, nest-ce pas? (She is American, isnt she?)
