RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK

Raiders of the Lost Ark is full of adventure, deceit, and love. It is a remarkable movie about the recovery of a long lost artifact. Indiana Jones is a professor and archeologists who races his rival, Renee Belloq and his fellow Nazis in the late 1930’s to find the artifact. Steven Spielberg directed this film and used framing to attract the audience’s eyes in different ways. He uses close ups, medium shots, and long shots to focus on certain things/people in the shots.

FRAMING

The framing in a film says a lot about whatever is in the shot. There are three main ways to frame something in a film.

1. Close up2. Medium shot3. Long ShotEach framing technique shows the

importance of something or someone in one way or another.

CLOSE UP

Close ups are used to bring the audience’s focus onto the object being framed. Close ups are used because the director wants the audience to look at something important, see a specific detail, or be aided in seeing what the character sees.

CLOSE UPWith close ups, an audience can’t look at anything else. They are forced to focus on what the director intended them to look at.

This ultimately helps the audience understand something they might not understand otherwise.

CLOSE UP- SHOW IMPORTANCEThe medallion is extremely important to the finding of the lost ark in this movie. The director repeatedly shows that so one can understand and pay attention to the medallion. Jones’ whip is his most essential tool throughout the movie, and the audience can see its importance. Through the abundance of close ups on it.

CLOSE UP-UNDERSTAND THROUGH SPECIFICS

In order to understand this humorous scene the audience is forced to focus specifically on the young woman’s eyes. Along with the close ups of all the other girls awing over Jones, one can conclude that he is a “babe”.The audience must look at the dart that has almost shot Jones so that the danger is understood. This film is filled with danger and risk taking. The audience is so focused on that danger because of scenes like this one.

CLOSE UP- BETTER SEE WHAT JONES SEES

Jones is directing his attention to his side mirrors throughout this high speed chase.

The director decided to show us what Jones see, except closer. This adds to the suspense of the chase…

…because objects in the mirror, may be closer than they appear.

MEDIUM SHOT

Medium shots are used to show a character and object in order for the audience to be able to see important characteristics. Sometimes directors just use medium shots to introduce something/someone new, however, sometimes they use them to introduce something new about that object/person.

MEDIUM SHOT

Medium shots can do many different things. Sometimes they could just be an unimportant shot to fill up time or make a transition. They can be used for effects such as showing importance, introducing a character, or showing characteristics of someone/something.

MEDIUM SHOT-SHOW IMPORTANCEThe amount of alcohol Marion can consume is not only impressive but also of major importance for later on in the movie. This medium shot of all the empty shot glasses shows the audience her ability to consume alcohol. Showing the

explosives the way the director decided to showed their importance. Because the audience sees the explosives just before the basket is placed in the truck, it can be foreshadowed that they will blow up.

MEDIUM SHOT- SHOW A CHARACTERIndiana Jones is an important character and a hard worker. He is good at what he does and medium shots like this express his hard work through the expression on his face and the posture of his body. His whip is his control.

Major Arnold Toht is seen as an intimidating man who gets what he wants with the help of his Nazi men. This is seen here by his backup men watching over him, and taking off his jacket for him. He is in control.

Renee Belloq can be seen as a wealthy man in control. He doesn’t use body guards or a whip to get control. He uses money. With his polished white suit and his general posture, the audience can see him showing his authority.

MEDIUM SHOT- SHOW CHARACTERISTICS

Indiana Jones’ characteristics are featured here. His style of clothing, his physical build, and his exhaustion from fighting. The audience can tell he’s a fighter, however, he has had his fair share of battles in his time.

The Egyptian fighter tries to show off his moves. This medium shot helps to see the moves along with his cocky smile and his audience awaiting an interesting fight.

The big burly Nazi has one major characteristic that is of importance and that is strength. Everyone could be able to see that from a long shot but the director went with a medium shot to increase his size and look of strength.

LONG SHOT

Long shots are used to show everything in a larger picture, obviously. It helps the audience see more than one thing or even a place. With long shots there may not be direct focus on one thing but importance is still shown.

LONG SHOT

Long shots can show things such as importance, location, and something as simple as the larger picture of something.

Page 18: Framing Cassidy Ulrich. Raiders Of The Lost Ark background.…………….3 Intro…………………………………………………………….4 Framing intro …………….……………………..…………5

LONG SHOT-SHOW IMPORTANCE

This scene is important because Jones knows something that Belloq doesn’t. he might be able to find the lost ark before Belloq and that is of much importance.

This shot is important because we are led to believe that Marion had just perished in this explosion. In the following scene one can understand how important she was to Jones due to his reaction.

Page 19: Framing Cassidy Ulrich. Raiders Of The Lost Ark background.…………….3 Intro…………………………………………………………….4 Framing intro …………….……………………..…………5

LONG SHOT- SHOW LOCATION

Through this long shot, that audience can see the empty cave where Jones attempts to retrieve an artifact. The long shot gives someone so much to look at, building suspense in this case due to the amount of possible booby traps.

The audience can see the location through this long shot as a bar in a small village. Because the director decided to show a map before this scene, one can conclude that the bar is in Nepal.

LONG SHOT-LOOK AT THE LARGER PICTURE

To understand the insanity Jones is feeling, one must look at the larger picture. Once they look at the larger picture they will see that there are an abundant number of baskets, one of which containing Marion.

The Nazis were very desperate to find the lost ark. This can be seen by the amount of workers, equipment, and desert that has been dug to the core. The Germans were very desperate at this point in time.
