Celebrating success with Professional StandardsFramework Fellowships

This March, we saw yet more of our Brookes staff successfully achieveprofessional Fellowships with the Higher Education Academy(https://www.heacademy.ac.uk/individuals/fellowship) (HEA). HEAFellowships demonstrate staff’s key contributions both here and ourpartnership colleges.

The Professional Standards Framework(https://moodle.brookes.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=30081) (PSF) pathwayoffers accredited routes to become an Associate Fellow (AFHEA), Fellow(FHEA), Senior Fellow (SFHEA) and Principal Fellow (PFHEA). Senior Fellowship of the HEA: Elizabeth Lovegrove (OCSLD), ElizabethJestico (HLS) and Shirley Shipman (HSS).

Shirley Shipman, Principal Lecturer (Student Experience) and ProgrammeLead (Law), said: “The application process provided an opportunity to reflecton my contributions to teaching and learning.  I particularly valued theopportunity to take part in and host writing days where participants coulddiscuss and support each others' applications and explore togetherparticular issues in relation to teaching and learning in our own, or related, disciplines.”

Institutes of Technology form a vital part of the Government’s majortransformation of technical education in a generation. This includesintroducing new T Levels from 2020 – the technical equivalent to A Levels –and further high-quality apprenticeship opportunities.

The 12 institutes will be backed by £170 million of Government investmentso they have access top quality equipment and facilities and can tap into thelatest research from their university partners, to anticipate the skills needs ofthe future workplace. They will also benefit from additional support from localemployers and partners, who will contribute valuable resources such asfurther investment or seconded teaching staff.

Updates on key processes from Academic And StudentAffairs

Three key areas of work from Academic and Student Affairs will be updatingover the coming months.

Earlier this month, the Academic Board approved changes to two key areasof work from Academic and Students Affairs: Academic Framework andMitigating Circumstances.

In addition, changes to the University’s approach to resits and retakes thatwere approved by the Academic Board in July 2018 will be coming into effectfrom 1 September 2019.

Exceptional circumstances

The Academic Board has approved changes to the University’s regulationson mitigating circumstances. The changes will come into effect from 1September 2019.

From this date, the regulations will be known as 'Exceptional circumstances',a name considered to be clearer and more self-explanatory to students thanthe previous name.

In late May, the webpages will be updated to reflect the new name andregulations. This will include guides for both students and staff to the newregulations and will highlight the changes made.

Students will be reporting any claims of Exceptional circumstances in thenew Student Records System (Banner) from September and there will alsobe guidelines on the website for how to use the new online interface.

Students will receive details of the new system in an email in September.

A consultation (https://intranet.brookes.ac.uk/onstream/2018/nov/mitigating-circumstances-review---consultation-launches/?type=rolling)on the proposedchanges was held in November-December 2018, with the consultationfeedback (https://intranet.brookes.ac.uk/onstream/2019/jan/feedback-from-mitigating-circumstances-consultation/?type=rolling) announced in January2019.

Resits and retakes

The (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1oaWOgyRGKuwV__5RVNq3NSaaU3cNOYsh)AcademicBoard approved(https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1oaWOgyRGKuwV__5RVNq3NSaaU3cNOYsh)changes to the University’s approach to resits and retakes in July 2018. Thechanges scheduled to take effect from 1 September 2019 are:

Page 5: Framework Fellowships Celebrating success with Professional Standards · 2019-06-11 · Onstream home (/onstream/)/ Onstream highlights 25 April 2019 Celebrating success with Professional

The requirement for students to obtain a minimum mark of 30% in order toqualify for a resit opportunity will be removed. From 1 September, allattempts at an assessment will be eligible for a resit opportunity.

The limit for the number of times a student on an undergraduate programmecould study a module will reduce from the current limit of three times to twice(meaning that the maximum number of attempts at an assessment would befour; for example, a first sit and a resit on each attempt at the module). Oncea student has achieved the learning outcomes for a module and gained anoverall pass, they will not be permitted to resit the assessment, or to retakethe module. This brings the number of attempts at an undergraduate modulein line with that currently allowed on a taught postgraduate module.

More information on both will follow. The regulations that reflect thesechanges are currently being drafted and will be released within the next fewweeks.

Academic Framework

The Academic Board has approved a number of proposals within theAcademic Framework Workstreams C and F.

The significant additions to Workstream C (Transition, Progression andAttainment) relate to new systems for progression and degree classification. These changes will come into force from September 2020.

Progression requirements: Students will no longer be able to trail modules. Research carried out by ASAshows that the majority of Brookes students who trail modules did notcomplete their programme at the same time as their peers. Hence, thispractice doesn’t help students to recover their position in terms ofcompletion time.

In order to balance the removal of the capacity to trail modules, compensation will be introduced. Compensation, a common practice withinthe sector, allows credit to be awarded where a pass mark has been narrowlymissed, providing other requirements have been met satisfactorily. This willenable students to progress to the next year without the use of trailing.

The two routes of progression will also be clearly identified: Degree withHonours; or an interim award (up to and including an Ordinary Degree). Thefirst route is for students obtaining an Honours Degree and a second routeallows alternative progression paths for students opting to exit with aninterim award.

More details on progression (https://www.brookes.ac.uk/staff/academic-framework/workstream-c/progression/)are available in the Academic Boardpaper.

Degree classification: The proposal that degree classification would be based on an overallweighted summation of the calculated average from the Level 5 weightedmodules (25%) and triple-weighted Level 6 modules (75%) was approved. This model was one of five proposed by ADSEs and the Academic Registrar. Each was carefully analysed and changes modeled to consider the potentialfor grade inflation and the impact of these changes in under-representedgroups and other student categories with protected characteristics (forexample BAME, disabled, mature, UK and International cohorts etc). Thisproposal most closely resembles our current model with the potential toslightly close the attainment gap amongst under-represented groups and therest of our student population.

More details on degree classification(https://www.brookes.ac.uk/staff/academic-framework/workstream-c/degree-classification/) are available in the Academic Board paper.

The changes to Workstream F (Effective, timely and efficient module choice)will come into effect immediately.

Module registration: Those students who have not registered their modules by the end of theappropriate registration window will be allocated module(s) from theremaining choices available. These will be allocated after those for studentswho did register their modules during the appropriate period. This will meanthat the preferred options for students who did not register within the windowmay not necessarily be available to them.

Late addition/deletion: The late addition/deletion process, as it is now, has a big effect on thetimetabling process and space optimisation. The Academic Board agreed

with the proposal to introduce certain modifications to this process and towho can make these requests. These requests will only be open for studentswho, due to extraordinary circumstances, have an exceptional reason torequest the change. This request must be raised by the programme’s SubjectCoordinator if they consider it appropriate and it will be subject to roomcapacity and other timetabling constraints. The request must also beapproved by the Academic Registrar.

More details are available in FAQs section(https://www.brookes.ac.uk/staff/academic-framework/workstream-f/faqs/)of the website.
