IntroductionFrame Publishers empowers spatial design excellence. We stimulate interior designers and architects to make outstanding spaces by sourcing, curating and sharing the best from the world of art and design. We enable them to lead the pack by researching and reporting on trends in retail, hospitality, event and workplace design. Our new book titles for spring 2016 reflect this mission. One of our bestsellers, Powershop, features the latest trends in retail design. Now out in its fifth edition, this impressive book showcases no fewer than 120 extraordinary stores by designers around the world, offering a glimpse of future developments in the realm of retail. CMF Design takes an in-depth look at the fundamental principles of colours, materials and finishes as related to industrially-designed consumer products. In our first book about this relatively young branch of design, the author consolidates its basic premises for easy consultation and referencing by both students and professionals. Many case studies illustrate the theory covered in CMF Design. How can spaces drive creativity? The answer to that question is the main rationale behind Spaces for Innovation, a publication based on research carried out by UK innovation charity Nesta. This important book gives Nesta’s research a context, while providing inspiring guidelines for interior designers, architects and other organisations interested in fostering innovation. My last recommendation is a book written by acclaimed Dutch architects Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos, the founders and directors of UNStudio. They compiled Knowledge Matters, a manifesto on the role of architects and the future of their profession. The authors advocate a greater sharing of knowledge and data among architects, with an eye to raising the discipline of architecture – in its broadest sense – to a level that is better suited to dealing with societal issues. Books like these are helping to propel interior design and architecture into the future, and, in so doing, they inevitably lead to excellent spatial design. If you have a good idea for a book or want to offer feedback on these or other books released by Frame Publishers, we would love to hear from you at [email protected].

Spaces for InnovationThe Design and Science of Inspiring Environments

This book explains the relationship between the physical design of working environments and levels of creativity and innovation. Based on the available evidence, Spaces for Innovation identifies the physical characteristics of workspaces that are associated with high innovation potential and determine why they have an effect. Providing a basic framework for the design of innovative environments, this book can be used in analysing ways to enhance physical space in the pursuit of innovation. Spaces for Innovation is a research-based publication that acts as a pattern guide, providing context, examples, inspiration and direction to help you explore and understand your organisational challenges.

The Experience

Strategic Questions How do we want people to feel in our spaces (comfort-able, safe, excited, curious, cosy, alert)? What different energies are we seeking to create (vibrant, relaxed, social, contempla-tive)? What tonal contrasts might we explore? How might they change? What visual stimuli do we need? How might that change? What cues and clues might we need to encourage the right behaviour? How might we encourage the use of all of our senses? What can we do to makethings tangible?

Many intuitively know an Innovative Space when they step into it. When they feel it, not necessarily when they see it. The debate around creative spaces largely centres on the argument that ‘creativity can happen anywhere’ and that ‘slides and beanbags won’t make you creative’. Both those statements are true. The confusion comes when people fail to understand that it is the experience an Innovative Space creates for its inhabitants that allows them to behave and interact in a way that maximises their potential for individual and collective creativity. The photographs we see from the outside serve only as a glimpse at the surface; what lies beneath are the element that come together, resonating with an undeniable creative buzz.

Impact HubOne of the first of its kind, Impact Hubs are “where change goes to work.” Part innovation lab, part business incubator and part community center, Impact Hubs offer “a unique ecosystem of resources, inspiration, and collaboration opportunities” to a network of collaborators focused on making a positive impact in the world. The first Hub space was founded in 2004 when designer Oliver Marlow (now Creative Director at Studio TILT), with a young group of techies, graphic designers and charity workers formed a 30-strong community that together designed and built its own space in Islington, London from scratch. At its core, the philosophy of the Impact Hub is to cultivate a collaborative community, co-located in a co-created space, as “impact cannot happen in isolation; it requires collective action.” The approach

doing with inquisitive thinking about the state of the world, and through under-standing how minds work in dynamic environments, enable “critical thinking in a safe space.” It’s this awareness of the interrelationship of spatial dynamics that fostered a desire to develop a deeper understanding of how to create a collabo-rative, inspired, and connected place that will powerfully support and accelerate entrepreneurial work, collective impact and mutual success. Viewing collabo-rative space-making as a much needed living process and practice, Tatiana has been exploring three levels of “architecture”: ”the physical, social and energetic containers that enable collaborative communities and the emergence of new ideas,” and ultimately transform space into an experience. In her article, “Collab-orative Space: in Process and Practice”, Tatiana outlines some key insights around which Impact Hubs are designed, built, maintained and nurtured to become “a place-for-purpose”. The typical model of workspace creation, where spaces are built and then people expected to behave in a certain way, results in individuals “becoming both yielding to work in a non-generative space for oneself and hampered in the potential for the group/organisation/department they are in to become a collab-orative community”. In contrast, HUB spaces employ a ‘consciously curated’

co-creation process of making the space, inviting its users (HUB members) to be an integral part of the space design and building. This invitation to co-create the physical space has enabled both peer-to-peer community building and a stronger sense of agency within and ownership of spaces once built. However over the years, as membership shifts and people walk into a space seemingly ready-made, the challenge, asks Tatiana is “how to continue to invite users to co-shape the space they inhabit?” This, it seems, is where the role of the social and energetic forces begin to exert their influences; the role of the community and the hosts of the space become important in continually engaging people with each other and the space. Tatiana emphasises the importance of distinguishing between co-crea-tion and consultation: “You can go out there and consult people on what they like but sometimes they don’t know what they don’t know.” Having worked with Studio TILT on previous Hubs, when she experienced their codesign process and then adapting that approach with her own interest in social space, the result is a day-to-day attitude which prioritises flexibility as a way of engaging people in the creation of their own spaces moment-to-moment. “There’s a movability in our

Impact Hub Amsterdam

Tatiana Glad, is co-founder of Impact Hub Amsterdam and passionate about social entrepreneurship as well as how to cultivate truly great collaborative spaces. The daughter of Belgian immigrants from Canada, she grew up alongside her parents’ bakery business, where she learned the value of small enterprises that are deeply embedded in the community: “When people came into the bakery, they would talk about what was going on in the neighbourhood so to me there are a lot of principles about a hospitable space when it comes down to natural things that you do as human beings when you create community.” Extending her interest in social business and business as a vehicle for change, Tatiana sought to work in a number of different organisations, from large corporates to NGOs to consulting but change didn’t happen quickly enough for her. “ I was working for a big corporate, wanting to change the world, thinking that would happen but then I realised that there are a lot power dynamics that go along with space, how you set up cubicles, how people are set up in a hierarchy and how buildings are constituted, who gets the corner office, who doesn’t and I became very interested in social technologies like OpenSpace and WorldCafe just as a way of shaking things up and also allowing people to be more liberated in what they can contribute.” So working in the entrepreneur space seemed to be the answer to Tati-ana’s ‘fluttering impatience” to get out and do things that are meaningful. For Tatiana, the heart of the role of the Impact Hub is to facilitate people who blend

The profession ‘architect’ has expanded in recent years, not just in terms of the cultural influences, but equally with respect to scientific advances. The inventive economy has also led to new lifestyle choices and a new role for the architect and architectural practice. We talk of an architecture that is either pre-crisis or post-crisis, the latter resulting in a call for responsible architecture (affordable, sustainable, attainable and healthy). This change led to changes in the UNStudio practice; the introduction of Knowledge Platforms and the development from a network to a knowledge practice. Now compiled into an inspiring publication, Knowledge Matters will help architects to run a better studio and to share knowledge.

OnomatopoeiaIts People and Surroundings

In 2005, Scottish Artist Charles Avery embarked on a long-term project entitled The Islanders, a detailed description of the topography, cosmology and inhabitants of a fictional island, realised in drawings, objects and texts. This book is a portrait of the people and culture of Onomatopoeia, capital city, port and gateway to the Island. The town was once the stepping off point for pioneers and travellers. It grew from an outpost to a bustling boomtown, before entering a phase of decline into depression ravaged slum, and now – in the fictional present – finds itself reborn as a regenerated city of culture with its own Museum of Modern Art.
