The Deer's Cry (also known as St. Patrick’s Breastplate)

Shaun Davey (album: The Pilgrim)

I arise today through the strength of heaven Light of sun, radiance of moon

Splendor of fire, speed of lightning Swiftness of wind, depth of the sea Stability of earth, firmness of rock

I arise today through God's strength to pilot me

God's eye to look before me God's wisdom to guide me God's way to lie before me God's shield to protect me

From all who shall wish me ill

Afar and a-near Alone and in a multitude

Against every cruel, merciless power That may oppose my body and soul

Christ with me, Christ before me Christ behind me, Christ in me

Christ beneath me, Christ above me Christ on my right, Christ on my left

Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down Christ when I arise, Christ to shield me

Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me

I arise today

Happy St. Patrick’s Day Fr. Mike

Patience is a Virtue Patience is one of the most beautiful of virtues,

readily recognizable in others but not exactly easy to either define precisely or describe. There is a tinge of sarcasm in the well known cliché which would have us believe that patience is a virtue, possess it if you can, seldom in a woman, never in a man. The word pa-tience derives from the Latin pate-meaning to suffer, to endure, to bear. So it's not too surprising that with usual clarity Thomas Aquinas observes that a person is said to be patient because he acts in a praiseworthy manner by enduring things which hurt him here and now and is not unduly saddened by them.

The patience of Job is another familiar phrase. Here was a God fearing man, struck low, down on his luck and who in adversity loses his property, his chil-dren and his health. But throughout all his anguish and sufferings he remained steadfast in his faith in the Lord and was patient. And when some friends insinu-ated that his trials and tribulations were due to his sin-fulness. Job rebuffed them - 'miserable comforters are ye al was his unflinching repost. St James noted 'you have all heard how Job stood firm, and you have seen how the Lord treated him in the end. For the Lord is full of pity and compassion.'

Pope Francis has talked about the virtue of pa-tience on a number of occasions. In his homiletic dis-course during his enthronement as Bishop of Rome at the basilica of St John Lateran, the Pope spoke, among other things, about the interaction between Jesus and doubting Thomas “And how does Jesus react? With patience. Jesus does not abandon Thomas in his stub-born unbelief. He does not close the door. Let us never lose trust in the patience and mercy of God. He is not impatient like us, who often want everything at once .... God is patient with us because he loves us.'

More recently Pope Francis again returned to the topic of patience in his homily during a Friday morn-ing Mass at the Casa Santa Maria. Reflecting on the reading of the day taken from Genesis when the Lord told a skeptical 99 year old Abraham that his wife Sarah, (then aged 90) would have a child the Pope tells how the Lord takes his time. But even He, in this rela-tionship with us, has a lot of patience. Not only do we have to have patience: He has! He waits for us! And he waits for us until the end of life! Think of the good thief. Right to the end, and at the very end he acknowl-edges God. The Lord walks with us, but often does not reveal Himself, as in the case of the disciples of Em-maus. The Lord is involved in our lives - that's for sure. But often we do not see. This demands patience. But the Lord who walks with us, He also has a lot of patience with us.'

Patience is not only a virtue but is also a much admired human quality in those who possess it. And

when Aquinas states that 'grace builds on nature' he was emphasizing that the supernatural life does not destroy the natural but rather builds and sanctifies it as grace works through nature. The politician William Pitt was once questioned about what quality he consid-ered as most essential for a Prime Minister. He was asked was it eloquence? Was it knowledge? Was it hard work? 'No' replied Pitt, 'it is patience or self con-trol' which of course is but a mirrored reflection of what St Paul had to say when telling the Galatians that 'the harvest of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, fidelity, gentleness and self-control.'? Be patient with others, and be patient with yourself, for as St Augustine reminds us 'patience is the companion of wisdom.'

DID YOU KNOW? Parents and teachers can prevent abusive behaviors Children, in particular, may have difficulty chan-neling their feelings appropriately and can easily pick up negative or demeaning cues given by adults around them. Given the diversity of America's schools, some students may become targets of hostility and blame. Bullying and har-assment are never acceptable, but they can be especially damaging at this critical time in our nation's history. Parents and school personnel need to be prepared to quickly and effectively prevent and stop abusive behaviors that are di-rected toward any students.
