Special Thanks I just want to thank some people who were a big help making Cardinal Tobin’s Deanery Visit a success. Lynn Alfieri, ably assisted by her “sous chef”, Laurie Hessman, prepared a wonderful meal for the cardinal and the 21 priests from Deanery 4. Fr. Colin and Fr. Brian Page arranged the liturgy and coordinated the ministers and altar servers from the different deanery parishes. Alan Quinn, Eric and Christine Knitel, and Meghan LoBue beautifully helped all those present worship with joy. Eric also set up the sound system in the church hall for the cardinal. Kate Humble and Joe Scopac organized the greeters and ushers, who all did a fantastic job helping everyone feel welcome and comfortable in the church and in the hall. Joe also arranged for the Knights of Columbus to act as an honor guard. Members of the St. Anne Pastoral Council helped keep the flow of questions going smoothly in the Town Hall assembly. One of the questions that Cardinal Tobin raised was about the difference that Christ makes in our lives. What does it matter that he is present to us? Another way of asking the same thing is: if I can meet God in the woods, then why should I care about meeting him at Mass? The Catholic Church makes much about its gathering together at Mass, for Jesus had said: “Where two or three gather in my name I’m there in their midst.” And in the gospel for this Sunday, Christ tells the story of a king who invites friends to a wedding feast. Wedding parties are symbolic in Jewish prophetic writings of God joining his people in friendship. Jesus completed this image in his parable but he added a note of urgency because all the king’s friends declined the offer. So he invites nobodies. They know the significance of the feast more than those who should have. For us, the Mass is this feast. Sometimes however we seem to miss its significance, like the characters in the story, because we’re caught up in our agendas or we look for him when it fits our schedules. In the Mass, Christ personally makes himself available to us as he is, not as we might want him to be. By helping us to get to know the real him at Mass, Christ makes a difference in our lives that we can miss in the woods. In the Mass, he’s there for us all as his brothers and sisters, as the Father’s sons and daughters. It doesn’t matter to him what we look like, what our race or ethnicity is, our wealth or job. The ordinary divisions that matter to us don’t matter to him. A new model for living with others is revealed because we’re in communion with him. This is God’s vision. It’s what Christ died to reveal to us. It’s his challenge to us. And, it’s literally for the sake of the future of the world that we act on it in now in our daily lives. It’s telling us that we don’t have to be locked into our past perceptions that so easily lead to resentment and conflict. A new vision is celebrated. A new Spirit for living is given to us. Love, Fr.Joe

They know the significance of the feast more than those who should have. For us, the Mass is this feast. ALTERNATIVE TO ABORTION If you know

someone who is considering having an abortion, here is a

number they might call that could be of help to them to

consider an alternative to this practice. The number is

1-800-395-HELP (4357).

During October, Pope Francis asks us to pray especially ...that all workers may receive respect and protection of their rights, and that the unemployed may receive the opportunity to contribute to the common good.

REFLECTION

THE OTHER HEAVEN

Judy Brackett

On nights with blind moon or none,

the near-blind great-grandmother settles

in her chair in the middle of the orchard,

bare branches or new leaves or hard-green

or just-right or too-late pears

around her, depending,

and listens to the music of the spheres. She makes

a circle, a kind of moon, with thumbs and pointers

touching, and looks up through it where the sisters

or the queen or the swan might be and waits

for the music to begin-whistling or humming

or bluesy harmonica or plaintive fiddle, sometimes

(she smiles at this) a harp

and all of it, lullaby or symphony, faint and strange.

Oftentimes, she stirs to find the night sky gone

And rises to the crackle of the sun waking up the

pears.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time “My God will supply whatever you need…”

(Philippians 4:19)

God really does provide for those who are grateful and generous. This is very difficult for people that don’t live a stewardship lifestyle to believe. People are skeptical and say it’s just coincidence. If you are skeptical, try living a stewardship lifestyle for just one month – be generous with your gifts of time, talent and treasure and see how God provides for your needs.

CREATION AT THE CROSSROADS For the next six weeks, BTOR will NOT be meeting at its regular day/time.

Instead, the "Creation" small group will be meeting for the six weeks 10/12-11/16 in the Faith Center from 1-2:30 pm. Please consider joining us.

BTOR will resume its regular schedule (Thursdays, 1-2 pm, in the Faith Center) on December 7.

Gift Bearers at Mass What an honor it is to carry the wine, hosts and offerings to the priest at

Mass for consecration! Any occasion can be a time to serve as a Gift Bearer: a birthday, an anniversary, or just a "happy day." Or maybe you would like to bring up the gifts on the memorial of a loved one. Gift Bearers actively participate in the celebration of the Mass by presenting the gifts of Bread and Wine at the altar and require no special skill or permanent ministerial duty, and yet it is a beautiful and significant part of the Mass. If you would like to bring up the gifts at Mass you can sign up for a specific Mass in the book in the Reconciliation Room located in the main vestibule of the church or speak with an Usher before Mass.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than others.

Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra energy

months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you should

happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate

it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy

envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be

sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks.

Online Giving…

You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online! To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org

There are several ways to access the system: 1. Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will

see a light blue icon with a $ sign. Click that icon to go directly to the system.

OR 2. From the homepage, check the left-hand menu options. The second to last menu option says

“envelopes & online giving.” Click that link, and a page with various giving options will appear.

Select the Online Giving option to be taken directly to the system.

Once you are taken to the new site, click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. Fill out the form and click “submit.” When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods. Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations.

Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
