The market is set to increase considerably, with an estimated 15 million units produced by 2018. We are currently working on new energy recovery technologies through smart auxiliaries, hybrids and waste heat recovery in the exhaust line, as well as new technologies to manage and control the engine, influencing fluid consumption. Improved thermal efficiency is a key factor moving forwards: our target is to improve diesel thermal efficiency above 50% by 2018. Meanwhile, second generation HI-eSCR is in development and will be integral in continuing our leading position in after-treatment solutions.Developments in CNG will increase performance and reduce emissions, with a new direct injection system under assessment to further improve the performance of the entire range, reducing fuel

consumption by 6%. Further fuel consumption reductions will come through the introduction of smart auxiliaries across all engine families by 2016, with the F1 series engines already featuring these updates. With our Integrated Energy Management System to design and validate components, control strategies and calibration, as well as our virtual validation and model based control, we will be able to implement the best solutions while reducing development time. The future for FPT Industrial involves a combination of high thermal efficiency powertrains with smart control systems that will be able to predict load requests and operate at ideal system efficiency. It’s by moving in this direction that we will be able to work, in the case of light commercial units, towards a zero or low emission vehicle with fuel consumption reducing by 30%.

HI-eSCROne of FPT Industrial’s most significant R&D innovations of late is the High Efficiency Selective Catalytic Reduction (HI-eSCR) system, which reduces Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) levels by more than 95% to ensure compliance with Euro VI and Tier 4 Final emissions legislation. Due to the opposite reaction of NOx and Particulate Matter (PM) to combustion temperature, the reduction of one results in an increase of the other. To reduce NOx as determined by emissions legislations, the use of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is required. FPT Industrial’s chosen system increases the combustion efficiency of the engine to reduce PM without using Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), while the remaining

PM is reduced in a passive Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and the NOx is reduced in the SCR system.

“The HI-eSCR system is a further step in FPT Industrial’s ongoing development programme to maximise the performance of SCR technology as we all strive for clean engines,” says Massimo Siracusa, Vice President of Product Engineering. “As a catalytic reduction system alone, without the need for EGR, it’s a unique solution unmatched in efficiency. In addition to meeting Euro VI and Tier 4 Final regulations for NOx emissions, it offers customers reduced fuel consumption and operating costs, besides the advantages of a very compact packaging solution.”TE

OFF-ROAD ON-ROAD

We spoke with Giancarlo Dellora, Design Concept and Pre-Development Manager, to find out a little more about the development process.

After the SCR, which began development in 1991, how long was HI-eSCR in development? We began the development process in 2005 and have now finished making sure that the system adheres to Euro VI and Tier 4 Final emission regulations. We are already working on the next stage in preparation for new legislation.

How large was the team working on this? A huge amount of effort went into the development of HI-eSCR. In the beginning there were around five engineers, which increased to 20, and then around 150 when the system went into production.

Was there a ‘eureka’ moment? Yes, in 2009 we accomplished 98% efficiency with the system, which was an amazing feeling of achievement.

How many cups of coffee do you think were consumed during the development of the new system? Personally, I can drink up to around ten cups of coffee a day. If you multiply that by an average of 20 people, divide it by two for normal consumption and multiply that by six years… that’s around 120,000 cups of coffee! So quite a lot!

• Proven on over 400,000 engines• Reduces NOx by more than 95%• Delivers improved fuel efficiency,

reliability and service intervals to reduce running costs

• Weight and space saving due to compact system

• Increased combustion efficiency due to higher cylinder and peak nozzle pressures in the Common Rail fuel injection system

In 1864, Conrad Dietrich Magirus set out to revolutionise the world of firefighting, with the specific aim of making the job safer for himself and his colleagues. The company established a reputation around the world with the first invention, a freestanding extension ladder, which came to be known as the ‘Ulm ladder’. Magirus was subsequently awarded a gold medal at the 1873 world’s fair in Vienna. Since that time, the company has been developing and manufacturing equipment to enable emergency services to efficiently deal with crises, such as fires, floods, earthquakes and explosions and has grown into a global player within the market.

The company currently has around 1,300 employees at four locations (Brescia in Italy, Chambéry in France, Kainbach in Austria and the head office in Ulm, Germany) and is part of the CNH Industrial Group. This has enabled the company to take advantage of the various technologies developed throughout the group and also to a global network of engineers. One of Magirus’ most popular product ranges is the Dragon, an FPT Industrial-powered airport fire-fighting vehicle that is used across the globe. The Dragon has been developed to cope with the extreme demands associated with airport fires and features the latest chassis, drive train, extinguishing and control technology.

The Dragon 2 series is designed to make it possible for customers to implement different configurations and drive variants that include 4x4, 6x6 and 8x8 chassis options. All of the vehicles use FPT Cursor 13 engines, which have an output of 412 kW (560 hp) in a single or twin engine configuration. “The quality of FPT engines represents one of the main competitive advantages we have,” said Moreno Zucco, Quality Manager at Magirus. “Working alongside FPT enables us to continue to produce the best products on the market.”

PULLING TOGETHER IN THE RIGHT DIRECTIONFPT Industrial has been working alongside Claas since 2013 in order to develop engines for its range of farming machinery. One of the partnership’s most recent accomplishments is the Axion 800: the first tractor to meet Stage IV (Tier 4 Final) emission requirements. Revealed for the first time at SIMA in Paris, the Axion 800 range offers power outputs from 200 hp up to 270 hp courtesy of its six-cylinder, 6.7-litre FPT Industrial NEF 67 engine. Its maintenance free Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) ensure that emission levels are kept to a minimum without Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Meanwhile, a wide 500 rpm constant power band and 8% more torque than previous models ensures increased power at lower revs, as well as reduced fuel consumption. This latest model launch follows the Claas Axion 850 receiving the prestigious accolade of ‘2014 Tractor of the Year’ at leading agricultural exhibition Agritechnica. Decided upon by a panel of 22 judges, the N67-equipped vehicle was awarded the title for its excellence in application. Boasting an output of 194 kW and 264 hp and a performance curve providing full torque of 1,132 Nm in a wide rpm range, even at low engine speed and maximum torque customers can save fuel or work at rated speed with a full reserve. As demonstrated in a recent test published in the January 2015 issue of farm machinery specialist magazine Profi, the FPT Tier 4 Final-equipped Claas Axion 850 uses 6%

ER FPT Industrial works alongside Dieci, a producer of telescopic elevators and cement truck mixers, to equip the company’s range of industrial, building and agricultural machinery with NEF engines. Thanks to the impressive quality of Dieci’s equipment and with the help of FPT’s engines, the company could claim a Guinness World Record for the longest journey made by a telescopic lift. The journey was 878 km and saw the vehicle travel from Dieci’s factory in Montecchio, Italy, to Humpolec in the Czech Republic.

Dieci and its Czech importer, Manatech CZ, selected an Agri Plus 40.7 VS EVO2 machine for the trip and Miloš Lesina, owner of Manatech CZ, along with Miroslav Apron and František Fiala drove the Agri Plus for 36 hours, 32 minutes and 5 seconds. The machine was equipped with standard equipment and Dieci said the the Brenner Pass and the Alps, which were the most challenging stretches of the route, proved no problem in terms of comfort and reliability. The telehandler has an FPT Industrial Stage IIIB/Tier 4 interim engine, combined with a Dieci Vario System

EVO 2 transmission system with continuous speed variation.

This allows fuel savings of more than 20% compared to traditional hydrostatic transmissions, with continuous speed variations and without the need to change gears.

Dieci says the combination of the gearbox with two hydrostatic engines makes a wide range of applications possible. The second engine can be disconnected at high speeds and re-connected when the wheels require high torque.

FPT HELPS TO SET WATER SPEED RECORDSFB Design was established in 1971 by Fabio Buzzi with the purpose of studying and building high performance motor boats, as well as marine transmissions known as Trimax drives. The company has been working in partnership with FPT Industrial for a number of years, which has led to numerous successes and race victories.

FPT Industrial diesel engines were used by Fabio Buzzi in 2008, with the N60 480 engine powering the BLUE FPT boat to victory in the Round Britain race, the longest offshore powerboat race in the world. In the same year, the RED FPT boat, with four NEF N67 600hp Evolution engines, won the Cowes to Torquay to Cowes endurance race.

Following these successes, FPT Industrial began providing FB Design with engines capable of competing in long distance speed attempts, culminating in a new record set in 2011 on the route from Monte Carlo to Venice. During the attempt, the FB Design Stab 48 hull, equipped with two C90 650 engines, only burnt 5,355 litres of fuel, which is less than half that of the previous record, though at a higher speed. In addition, in 2012, two C90 650 engines from FPT Industrial helped set a record on the New York to Bermuda route.

The partnership started when the Iveco engine was used for the first time in the 1982 season and it helped power the boat to victory in the Italian Offshore Championship Class 2 and the European Offshore Championship Class 3. Following a number of successes, the most important victory came in the 1986 World Championship Class 1 in New Zealand, where the Iveco Fiat engine outpaced the gasoline engines for the first time in the sport’s history.

As well as manufacturing powerboats, FB Design develops and builds high speed patrol boats on behalf of many naval organisations all over the world. Engines need to be durable, reliable and capable of surviving in extreme conditions, and so FB Design uses the NEF and Cursor Series engines in different displacement and power configurations.

One of the key reasons for FB Design’s success is its continued research and development of the way boats are built. The relationship is ongoing due to the continual development and testing of the engines, along with the reliability, performance, low fuel consumption and reduced emissions of the FPT Industrial engines, even in the toughest conditions.

The 2014 CNH Industrial Sustainability Report renews FPT Industrial’s commitment to operating sustainably. Although there has been a change in corporate structure, the long-standing commitment to employees, the environment, customers, suppliers, local communities and all others with whom the company interacts on a daily basis remains unchanged.

The key on-going sustainability targets include developing a company culture of sustainability, remaining aligned with best practice and ensuring best-in-class standards of company governance. In addition, FPT Industrial also aims to develop a culture of continuous improvement, reduce IT-related energy consumption and promote a healthy work life balance amongst its employees.

FPT Industrial will continue to reduce fuel consumption, along with polluting and CO2 emissions, while promoting the use of alternative and renewable energy sources.

FPT Industrial also has a number of key sustainability projects, which include: enhancing the Easygo web tool and mobility plan; completing a cradle-to-grave carbon footprint analysis and Life Cycle Assessment of the F1C engine; several health programmes, and projects to support local charities and communities.

As part of its sustainability projects, FPT Industrial aims to safeguard and improve the biodiversity in areas around its production sites

in Bourbon Lancy and Foggia. A Biodiversity Value Index (BVI) has been developed with the Fiat Group, the University of Turin and CNH Industrial, which has topped the world and European Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes for the last three consecutive years. Native plant species have been planted with existing plants and animals protected to ensure that the BVI is improved.

Additionally, FPT Industrial participated in a forestation project in the local parks around the Turin headquarters. As one of the biggest employers in the Turin area, FPT Industrial planted 150 trees on World Environment Day, 5 June, in parks surrounding the Po River to assist in the offset of CO2 emissions.
