ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Process Journal Report Compilation | Pamphlet & Model Representation Introduction For the final project for ENBE, Each student will have to pretend that they are the mayor of the “X” City. The people in “X” city require a new city because of reasons that it no longer liveable or because it’s just too crowded. As a mayor you will need to propose a new layout for the new “X” City very quickly. As a group, we are given 5 options to choose to build the city on. The 5 options are an underground city (or in a cave), an underwater or floating on water City (at sea or saltwater wetlands), an underwater or floating on water City (fresh water wetlands), a city that blends in the forest (Swamp Area etc), a city in the Air (or sky scraper city or in the mountains). When planning the city, students are required to consider and include the followings; i. The geometric shape, form, pattern, hierarchy, system and structure of the city. ii. The aim of the city, the green approach, new waste management, new technology, business plan, new initiatives etc. iii. The main focus of the city; such as the square, garden, monuments, town hall, pavilion, civic building, axis and vistas. iv. The zoning of the city. (government buildings, business area, commercial areas, recreational areas, education areas, religious and cultures areas, hospitals, services area, industrial area, residential, community area, port and shipping area, forest and green areas, agriculture area, hospitality and tourism etc) v. The Future City: City of Bioshock Infinite

The city in this game, Bioshock infinite is actually a floating city also called as Columbia. The buildings are all connected by a bridge. The main transport system in this city is zeppelins and overhead rail. Grapple Hook is also considered a medium of transport but it can only be used by one person only.

Benefits of the city- It’s environmental friendly

- The buildings are all connected with bridges to reduce the inertia of the city when its flying.

- Some buildings used balloons to levitate in the sky but most of them used quantum levitation.

- The city is designed with docking stations and propulsion to allow sections of it to move independently

Information of the “X” cityThe place that we got to build the city is in the air, it can either be on top of a mountain, a skyscraper city or a city that is floating in the air. Since this is an individual work, I chose a city that is floating in the air as it has more freedom to move around. The city can choose to settle down in one location or float around the world like a nomad.

Case study on city in the air Having a city in the air is totally different because its levitating in the air. It’s like a giant plane holding a city. A lot of considerations need to be made when having a city in the air. But if natural disasters such as earthquake, flood or tsunami, it won’t be a problem to it.

The considerations and problems

Planning a city needs to do detail research and considerations. The main factors of planning a city is knowing the economy issue, environmental issue and social issue. Other than that, we need to know how to make the city to float in the air and not making it fall. Promoting eco friendly life style can reduce environmental issue. By using public transport or walking would greatly reduce air pollution.

As from the economy issue, we need to know how do we get the income if our city is built in the air? Will it be by agriculture? The only source of income in the air would probably be tourism, as nothing much can be done in the air then enjoying the breeze and view of it. By implementing what a tourism city needs into the floating city, it will work the same way but different experience to the people.

To actually make the city float in a stable condition, it can be either by using quantum levitation, hover ball system or using balloons as seen in the movie “Up”. The weight on top of these needs to be proportional as the system is pushing against the city to make it float.

The Advantages Having a city floating in the air can comes with a lot of pros and cons.

- It’s a whole new different experience for the citizen that live in the city.

- The citizen would get a better way of living in the future, floating on air city would be built accommodating environmental, social and economy issue, which can provide a higher standard living to the citizen.

The Disadvantages- The city might interrupt the air transportation pathway

- Its far away from the land or sea, getting the resources would be a problem

- Since its in the air, air pollution can get worst if any considerations were not made.

SKYVALLEY

The aimThe aim of this city is to let the people live in an eco friendly environment for a different life style experience.

The IdeasMy initial ideas was to make a city similar to the city in Bioshock Infinite, which is to connect the city with bridges. But after thinking twice, I’ve decided to design the city in a more simple way, since what matters is the inside of the city. The reason the design of the city is like this is because I need to make sure the city can float properly and not fall. Both top and bottom are aerodynamic is to reduce the air resistance.

The new features & facilitiesSince I wanted to make an eco friendly city, why don’t I make the city without transportation that burns fuel but make something that pedestrian will use

Hover board

- faster compared to walking

- safe & easy to use

- environmental friendly

Bike rental system

- mainly for tourist or anyone that needs it

- can be rent from almost any part of the city

- good for sight-seeing or relaxing

Solar roadways

- Roadways that made from solar powered LED lights

- Can customized by its own depending on the situation, for example if there’s an animal walking on the road, the LED lights will ignite on the place where the animal stepped on to alert the pedestrian or biker.

- During the night, it will use its stored energy to power up the roadways.

Green residential

- Residential area that is solar powered and with a small garden for you to plant anything

- Same goes to condominiums, condominiums are also equipped with edible garden & a small pool for higher class residential.

The progress layout design

The idea in my mind is to make a simple layout design for the city, the shape will be either square, rectangle or a circle. These are some of the city layout design I looked through the internet.

These two layouts are the one I paid attention the most. After a deep considerations, I chose to make a city layout similar to the left one.

Pamphlet design

For the pamphlet design, I chose to do the classic one which is the accordion style. As for how the pamphlet look like, instead of making it look messy with a lot of graphics and fancy fonts, I want to make it simple yet easy to understand.

About the Pamphlet What is a pamphlet? And how do you make a good looking pamphlet?

Pamphlet

Pamphlet is like an unbound booklet without a hard cover or binding. It can consists of one sheet paper that is printed on both sides and folded in half like an accordion style. Pamphlet is good advertising medium or business communication.

Examples of pamphlet

How to make/fold it?In order to make a pamphlet from a blank paper, we need to know how to fold it into one. These are some of the ways to fold it.

As for my pamphlet, I’m using the most classic way to make it, the accordion style.

Good pamphlet designTo make a pamphlet that is artistic and informative, the pamphlet should consists some of these elements.

A good headline/coverFirst impressions is the most important to attract people to read at your pamphlet. A good cover should be able to deliver the main message to the reader. These pamphlet cover might

not consists a lot of graphic butit can convey a message to thereader.

InformativeA pamphlet without enough information is like a book with blank pages. The pamphlet must have the information about the products or messages that you’re selling or convey to let people know more about it. The information should be clear enough to convince the people, if they like it, they might consider it. Pictures about your products should be in the pamphlet to give people a rough idea about the products.

In this pamphlet, it clearly shows the

ways to prevent HIV & AIDS

Fonts & Colors Using the right fonts can affect how your pamphlet can attract the people. Fonts such as Forte, IMPACT or Broadway can easily attract people to read at your pamphlet because of its uniqueness. As for colors, colors such as red can attract people because of its fresh and bright color. According to research, red color is the color that can attract people 90% of the time, which explains why some of the magazines’ cover or pamphlet uses red.
