St. John Bosco - Flavio Insinna gives a winning performance as John (Don) Bosco, the great priest and educator of youth from the tough streets of Turin, Italy. Beautifully filmed in Italy, this epic movie dramatizes the many challenges that Don Bosco had to overcome from his childhood all the way to founding his religious order, the Salesians, for helping educate boys. His deep faith, creative imagination, and profound charity shine through in this wonderful film. Also stars Charles Dance (Gosford Park) and popular Italian singer and actress Lina Sastri. Reflecting on God’s Word Prophets tend not to be very popular. They get thrown in jail, ridiculed, beaten up, or killed. The leaders of Jerusalem once had Jeremiah thrown in a cistern, where he would have died if someone had not interceded for him with the king. Today we hear how the people of Nazareth would have killed Jesus if he had not given them the slip. In both cases, people did not want a message that God was sending them through the prophets. Jeremiah had to tell the leaders that their time had run out because of their infidelity to the covenant. God was leaving them to their own devices, allowing Jerusalem to be destroyed by the Babylonians. Jesus confronts his own townspeople by admonishing them that they should be like that woman whom Elijah helped and that leper Elisha sent to wash in the Jordan. Both of these Gentiles had faith they should imitate. But the villagers only wanted a God who would wreak vengeance on the Gentiles, a God who only worked wonders for them and who was confined within the boundaries of Israel. Sometimes we may want to keep God in a little box of our own making, limiting God to the boundaries of the church building or maybe even just the tabernacle. That way we go and visit God when we have time or need something, but we hope that God will not bother us too much with any burdensome demands. The God of Israel was never satisfied with confinement, even in something the size of the temple. And Jesus would not allow himself to be constricted in his own day concerning whom he associated or ate with or even touched. Tight quarters wouldn’t do, not then but especially once he was raised from the tomb!

SAINT JOHN BOSCO, (Don Bosco) Confessor

(1815 – 1888)

Patron Saint of Catholic Education

Feast Day – January 31

This apostolic priest of modern times is hailed as the patron of youth. He was born in Castelnuovo, Italy, on August 16, 1815. As a youngster, he was employed for a time as a shepherd, and this leisurely work gave him opportunity for prayerful union with God which was so evident in the years of his labor for souls. As a young priest in Turin, he was under the guidance of Don Joseph Caffasso, now a saint. An act of kindness to a poor boy in 1842 began the work of charity associated with his name thereafter, the care of needy youth. For them he organized clubs and night schools, giving them recreation and training. Despite obstacles and difficulties from all sides the endeavor, which included technical schools and work shops grew until he had founded a society, the Salesians, to perpetuate it. The work for boys gradually branched into a work for needy girls, for whom a Community, Daughters of Mary, Help of Christians, was inaugurated. Don Bosco was beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1929. The same Pope, who had known the saintly priest, canonized him five years later. Bl. Dominic Savio, canonized in 1950, was one of the early pupils of the Salesians. Bosco's work was carried on by his early pupil, collaborator and companion, Michael Rua, who was appointed rector major of the Salesian Society by Pope Leo XIII in 1888.
