Dear Parishioners,

Jesus addresses us with comforting words today: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” Let those words wash over is and all the responsibilities we have and all the stresses we’re under, and all the failures that haunt us. “My yoke is asy,” Jesus assures us, “ my burden light.” As we gather together on this holiday weekend, let us rejoice in the freedom Jesus offers us from our heavy burdens.

First written by Irving Berlin in 1918, he rewrote the song in 1938 in response to the rise of Adolf Hitler and fascism in Germany. He rewrote it as a prayer for peace, and it was performed for the first time by Kate Smith on an Armi-stice Day broadcast (November 11 – now known as Veterans Day) that year. Berlin also wrote the spoken introduction (now rarely heard but which Smith always used).

At its heart, it’s a prayer for the well-being of our country. Especially in the politically and racially charged times in which we live, may God bless Ameri-ca. It truly belongs to all of us together.

A wonderful follow-up song in the same vein: Woody Guthrie’s “This Land

is Your Land”.

God bless America, land that I love

Stand beside her and guide her

Through the night with the light from above

From the mountains to the prairies

To the oceans white with foam

God bless America, my home sweet home

God bless America, my home sweet home
