Four Seasons Resort Hualalai 2011 Highlights
Citation preview
RenewIt’s been a busy year here at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, and with our constant focus on perfection, we’re better than ever. We look forward to welcoming you back soon with the warm spirit of aloha.
Morning Coffee, Ready When You AreWaking up to the smell of Hawaiian
coffee is one of life’s greatest pleasures,
so we’ve added a coffee cart to each
guest room. We’ll prepare your coffee
set-up each evening at turndown,
so it’s quick and easy to brew in the
morning – helping you start another
perfect Hualalai day.
On your next visit to Hualalai, you’re sure to
notice our newly refreshed guest rooms and
suites – completed earlier this year. The style
is lighter, with new furniture and fabrics.
The look is more “Hawaiian beach,” perfectly
capturing the Resort’s comfortable elegance.
Many rooms now also feature enhanced views
and larger lanais. We’re continuing to make
our Resort even more special for you.
Beautifully Refreshed
Every Single Guest Room
What’s Cooking?New Food & Beverage Experiences, Inspired by the Vision of James Babian, Executive Chef
Pahu i’a: Top Restaurant on Hawai’i IslandPahu i’a continues to gain accolades. We were just
named the # 1 restaurant on Hawai’i Island by the
2011 Zagat Survey.
Chef Nick Mastrascusa is now overseeing both
Pahu i’a and Beach Tree, as these two dining venues
complement each other so well. His creativity has
resulted in many delicious changes to the menu.
To try them all, you’ll likely want to dine at Pahu i’a
several times during your stay! Look for sushi,
shared plates and new wines by the glass.
We’re proud to say that 90% of the food served at
Pahu i’a is produced on Hawai’i Island, based on
our commitment to working with our fantastic
island farmers and fishermen.
Replenish
New Dining Experience at Pahu i’aWe listened to your comments and we’ve made some great changes to the Pahu i’a dining experience.
The atmosphere is now more fun, lively and paced to suit your mood. Drop in for a leisurely meal,
shared appetizers or a few glasses of wine. Our new fire pit provides additional options for casual
dining and after-dinner lingering. Be sure to check out the lounge for breakfast or dinner.
Daily Rituals at the Sunset LawnSure to become a favorite spot on your next visit,
the Sunset Lawn is a beautiful new destination,
set right on the ocean in front of the Beach Tree
Pool and Restaurant. The name is a natural fit,
because this is a fabulous place during sunset.
This is also the home of Bubbles at Beach Tree,
our nightly pre-dinner ritual, featuring blankets,
pillows, bocce ball and champagne.
More to Tempt You at the Surf ShackWe’ve made some enhancements to the Surf Shack,
located between the Beach Tree and Sea Shell pools.
There’s now an expanded deck, a greater amount
of seating and more offerings on the menu. You’ll
find everything from coffee drinks and snacks to
soft-serve frozen yogurt and tropical shaved-ice
cones. Just stroll up in your swimsuit and enjoy!
Have You Heard About the Kau Kau Cart?Keep your eyes open for our tiki-inspired Kau Kau Cart,
which drives around the Resort daily from 4:00 to
6:00 p.m. The Kau Kau (meaning “food”) Cart features
snacks and beverages for kids and adults – perfect if
you need a little bite or a drink before dinner. Offerings
include cheese plates, chips and candy, along with beer,
wine and soft drinks to wash it all down!
Palm Grove Pool: For Adults Only
Pick Your Perfect SpotRestful and romantic, the Palm Grove pool offers
plenty of idyllic places to relax, letting you choose
from chaises longues, hammocks and daybeds
tucked in semi-private areas off the deck.
Adding to the beauty, miniature Zen gardens are
placed on all side tables, while fragrant gardenia
and plumeria surround the pool to provide a hint
of natural aromatherapy.
Refresh
Enjoy Hourly PamperingLook forward to hourly poolside pampering,
inspired by the four natural elements. Among
the possibilities: coconut water and aloe refresher
shots (water), warm lava stone pressure-point
massage (fire), thermal mud hand and body lotion
(earth), and organic aromatherapy-infused
oshibori towels (air).
Cool Indulgence at the Swim-Up BarFeeling thirsty? Discover our own chic interpretation of a
swim-up bar, featuring bench seating within the pool. This
is the prime location for sampling our signature shaved-ice
cocktails. Flavors range from the pineapple or yuzu margarita
to our thyme-berry cooler and sake pom-tini. Palm Grove’s
selection of nature-inspired cocktails are always served with
a healthy splash of Hualalai sunshine.
Recharge
Recreation Round-UpTips on the 17th Holefrom Brendan Moynahan, Director of GolfOne of the biggest challenges of playing our golf course is focusing on the
hole and not being distracted by all the natural beauty.
With views of black lava, white sand and blue water, our signature 17th hole
doesn’t make it easy to concentrate. Before choosing a club for the 164 yards,
it’s important to consider the wind. Usually there’s a 10- to 15-mile-per-hour
breeze coming off the ocean to the left of the hole, so aim to the left in order
to ride the wind.
Fortunately the 17th green is one of the largest on the course, so you have
a decent shot of making it on!
Discover our Huaka’i TourThere’s a tremendous amount of heritage here at
Hualalai, and we’re telling this fascinating story with
our new Huaka’i tour, which translates as a “travel
experience with a defined purpose”.
Narrated by the experts here at the Resort, the tour
takes you across the property and highlights unique
plant life, pieces of art and historic sites.
This virtual walking tour may be enjoyed in a number
of ways. You can follow the self-guided tour with your
own iPod or mobile device, or you can borrow one from
the Concierge. Or you can listen or read the tour at home
before you arrive. Just contact us and we’ll send it to you.

Smooth New Body Wrap and Poolside PamperingOur spa continues to pamper in high fashion, and we’re excited to introduce
our newest apothecary experience: the wawali (smooth) wrap treatment.
Using indigenous ingredients, a body mask is custom-blended to your
individual needs for moisturizing, mineralizing, cleansing or softening.
You are then cocooned in warm linens as you enjoy a face and scalp massage.
The pampering is now extended poolside. During your next visit, please ask
about our popular poolside massage treatments. We realize that our pools are so
lovely you may not wish to leave them, so let us bring the spa experience to you!
Health and WellnessOur Hualalai Sports Club was recently named
“# 1 Place to Stay Fit While on Vacation” by Shape
magazine. On behalf of our team – trainers, tennis,
yoga, Pilates, spinning and zumba instructors,
as well as chiropractors and acupuncturists –
we say “mahalo” for the accolades!
Being socially and environmentally conscious is a part of every day life at Hualalai. Our history, tradition and precious natural environment are always our priority.
Eco Update
RestorePlanting 500,000 “Legacy” Koa TreesWe’ve partnered with a local, non-profit
organization, Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods,
to plant up to 500,000 “legacy” koa trees.
As legacy trees, they will not be harvested,
and will live out their natural life in the native
Hawaiian forest, contributing significantly
to re-establishing this depleted species.
This initiative is part of the global effort
of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts to
plant 10 million trees around the world, in
celebration of the company’s 50th birthday.
If you’d like to learn more about the project,
you can join weekly meetings with
representatives from Hawaiian Legacy
Hardwoods at the Hale o Kanu. Meaning
“the house where planting begins”, this
learning center is located in Ronnie’s
Garden, across from the Cultural Center.
You can contribute to the cause and sponsor
your very own legacy tree. Start by planting
your seedling in a small tray and we’ll help
nurture it until it’s ready to be planted. You’ll
receive a certificate with a unique code that
will allow you to find your tree via GPS signal
once it’s planted in the forest. You can even
buy your own family forest!
Looking Ahead: Restoring Our CoastlineOur natural resources team is hard at work
on a proposal that would restore the Resort’s
coastline and re-establish productive and
sustainable fishing grounds. The project
would implement a 10-year “rest” or no-take
policy from the reef – enabling native fish
to replenish their once-bountiful population.
We’ll keep you informed!
Cut your Carbon Footprint in the Eco-Crescent at King’s Pond – Our Natural Aquarium in the Lava The crescent of guest rooms surrounding King’s Pond offer consistent Four Seasons
style and luxury – with a difference. We’ve taken special steps to minimize guests’
impact on carbon emissions, while maintaining full comfort and enjoyment. These
measures range from reducing the frequency of linen changes to eliminating the
use of bottled water.
When you stay in these rooms, you contribute to our environmental efforts and play
a role in preserving the beauty we treasure so much. You’ll enjoy your Hualalai stay
with even more peace of mind. To request a stay in our Eco-Crescent, simply let us
know when making reservations.
What Makes the Eco-Crescent Different? Here are just some of the environmental
measures in the Eco-Crescent at King’s Pond
that help to reduce your carbon footprint:
• Automatic enrollment in our
Green Linen Program.
• Refillable bathroom amenity dispensers,
instead of individual plastic bottles.
• Ceramic water carafes, refilled daily.
• Lower-energy compact fluorescent lights.
• In-room paper products made from
recycled, biodegradable fibers.
• Rubber spa sandals, instead of disposable
terry cloth slippers.
For a full list of measures, please refer to
our Guest Directory of Services.
Did you know? The Origins of Our NameThe full name of our Resort is
Four Seasons Resort Hualālai at
Historic Ka‘ūpūlehu, and there’s an
interesting story about the origins of
that last word. The land division on
which the Resort sits was originally
known as “Ka‘ūlupūlehu”. Over the
years, it has been shortened slightly
to “Ka‘ūpūlehu”.
The original word can be broken into
three parts: “Ka” meaning “The”; “Ulu”
meaning “Breadfruit”; and “Pūlehu”
meaning “Roasted”. So yes, we’re named
after “The Roasted Breadfruit”. This
name honors the crop that once grew
plentifully on this land, and it also
echoes a local legend of two sisters
and a mysterious visitor.
Come by the Cultural Center and ask
to hear the legend from “Uncle” Earl
Kamakaonaona Regidor. While you’re
here, you can play ukulele, learn the hula,
create Hawaiian crafts, or just talk story.
Road TripRent a car directly from the
Resort, chart your course with
our Concierge, and let us pack
you a picnic for the day.
Green Flash GazingThe best place to see the “green flash” –
appearing just above the sun at sunset –
is the Beach Tree Bar, which was voted
one of America’s best beach bars this
summer by Travel + Leisure.
Sustainable SeafoodThe lobster and kampachi served in our restaurants
are raised in sustainable methods in the cold, pathogen-
free underwater farms at NELHA (Natural Energy
Laboratory of Hawaii Authority). This allows us to bring
you the best-quality and freshest seafood available.
Dining on the SandWe love to serve private dinners on the beach,
whether for couples, families or groups of
friends. It’s an unforgettable experience,
being surrounded by the people who are most
important to you – relaxing by the water, with
your feet in the sand. Your own dedicated
servers make sure everything is perfect.
Abundant GreeneryThere are over 800 species and
varieties of trees and plants at
the Resort, including wiliwilu,
ulu, palms and philodendrons.
