When you think about Boston,

Harvard and M.I.T. are the brains of the

city, and its soul might be Faneuil Hall

or the State House or the Old Church.

But I think the pulsing, pounding heart of

Boston is Fenway Park.

Unless traveling by your own vessel, the easiest access is by ferry. During the summer months, the ferry runs 7 days a week from Boston to Spectacle Island (30 minutes) and Boston to Georges Island (45 minutes). Spectacle Island offers panoramic views of the Boston Harbor and a lifeguarded beach, and is perfect for outdoor adventures including hiking, swimming and boating. Alternatively, Georges Island is home to Fort Warren, a historic Civil War-era fort that dates back to 1833 and took nearly two decades to complete. This is the ideal destination for any history enthusiast.

There’s no better way to see Boston than from the water. You can choose to rent an individual kayak and follow your own itinerary or you can take a Boston Skyline and City Lights guided tour with Paddle Boston. The tours are approximately 1.5 hours and will paddle past the Great Dome of MIT, cross the Charles to the Esplanade, and take in the skyline, including the Hancock and Prudential Buildings, Citgo Sign, State House Dome, and the Financial District. In the evening, Paddle Boston also offer Sunset and City Lights Tours, which provide an unparalleled opportunity to be on the river at sunset and see the city lights at dusk. Be sure to pack a snack or beer to enjoy on the water!

No summer trip to Boston would be complete without a visit to “America’s Most Beloved Ballpark”, Fenway Park. While it’s not off the beaten path and is indeed a little cliché, there’s a reason why this is a quintessential Boston experience, and is somewhere the locals, more than the tourists, actually frequent. If timing allows, try to snag tickets to a game while you’re in town. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience, take a behind-the-scenes Fenway Park Tour where you’ll learn all about the history of the Boston Red Sox and view the World Championship trophy. The tickets for the tour are on a first-come, first-served basis and are only available on the day of. After the game or the tour, be sure to grab a beer and a hot dog at The Landsdowne Pub, a famous sports bar adjacent to the stadium. Conveniently, Fenway Park is located just a short walk from One Dalton.

Short for “South of Washington”, the SoWa Art + Design District is a community for design and art aficionados nestled in the South End of Boston. The district is full of one-of-a-kind galleries, showrooms and boutiques that are run by designers and artists. It’s the perfect location to find an unusual gift for someone special. On Sundays the district comes alive with an outdoor Farmers Market, featuring a large selection of favorite local farms and food makers and an outdoor arts market featuring the best makers from around New England. Go indoors to the Vintage Market for some antiquing and treasure hunting and to visit the galleries of local Boston artists. This is also home of the food trucks – there’s no better place for Sunday brunch. And don’t miss a cold beverage in the Beer Garden!

Nantucket is a tiny, isolated island off Cape Cod and the quintessential New England summer experience. You can easily visit the island for a day trip, or spend a night there either before or after your stay at One Dalton. The easiest way to reach Nantucket is via a quick 50 minute flight from Boston. Alternatively, you can choose to drive to Hyannis, Cape Cod and take the high-speed passenger ferry which takes 1 hour, or the car-ferry which takes 2.15 hours. Nantucket features gorgeous beaches and three prominent lighthouses and is a photographer’s paradise. Be sure to visit Cisco Brewery for brews, oysters and live music. Stay in town for an afternoon or an evening, and enjoy a famous Mudslide at the Gazebo and then go shopping at the high-end boutiques. The Whaling Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the island’s historic past as a 19th century whaling hub. If you have the time, Martha’s Vineyard also makes for a great day or the perfect extension to a stay at One Dalton!

Widely regarded as one of the New England’s most beautiful summer destinations, Newport is a quaint town on Narragansett Bay that has played host to many historic occasions including the America’s Cup and the wedding of John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier at St Mary’s Church in 1953. Once a playground to the rich and famous, Newport is home to an incredible collection of Gilded Age mansions lining Bellevue Avenue, some of which are now museums and offer self-guided tours. The Breakers is the grandest of Newport’s summer “cottages” and was the summer home of the Vanderbilt family from 1895. Another must-do experience in Newport is The Cliff Walk, a stunning 3.5 mile walk along the rugged New England shoreline. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and take numerous photos – the views are spectacular.

It’s hard to believe that Walden Pond is a State Park and was formed by retreating glaciers some 10,000-12,000 years ago. In 1854, after spending two years living in a cabin on the Pond’s shore, the writer and philosopher, Henry David Thoreau, was inspired to write his famous work, Walden; or, Life in the Woods. Stunning beautiful, it makes you feel like you are back in time when New England was young. You can choose to walk around the famous Pond, or swim or boat out on the water. For history buffs, there’s also a replica of Thoreau’s single-room cabin. Be sure to go early in the morning as parking fills up quickly and it’s a long ride to have to turn around. Make sure to stop at the local farms all along MA-2! Fun Fact: you can also see (from the outside) Concord State Prison as you drive along MA-2. It has been in a million films and looks nothing like the movies!
