May Day Tour—May 1 By Debbie Haroun Here is the scoop on the May Day Tour Larry and I are leading on Sunday, May 1, 2016. We will be meeting be- tween 10-10:30 at the Oregon City Shopping Center park- ing lot (bordering McLaughlin) with departure at 10:30 sharp. We will be driving the back roads to Silverton, OR., where we will have a picnic lunch around 11:30 at a park with picnic tables and a covered area (in case of rain), and restrooms. Please pack your own picnic lunch. From Sil- verton we will tour into Salem ending at Deepwood Muse- um and Gardens (see www.deepwoodmuseum.org). Deep- wood is a Victorian historic house designed in the Queen Anne style situated in a five acre public park with formal gardens, nature trails, greenhouse, and original carriage house. Check out the website. Tours of the house and gardens are usually conducted Wednesday-Saturday, but they will open the house for our group to tour if we have enough people interested in doing that. The cost of the tour is $6 for adults and $5 for seniors (62+). Depending on the size of the group, we could be split up into two groups with one group doing a self-guided tour of the gardens while the other group go on a guided tour of the house. We will need a head count of the mem- bers interested in having a tour of the house. Please RSVP to Debbie cell: 503 754-1486 or email: [email protected] and let me know if you would like to do the tour. Larry and I drove the route a few days ago and are ex- cited to share this experience with you. The gardens are GORGEous and I’m told they only get better as the Spring and Summer approaches. A Message from the President... By Donna McNabb

CHANGE. The word of the month. Nobody likes sudden, drastic,

change, especially when it is cata-strophic or negative events that cause it. It seems like there is a lot of change in my life recently.

There is an old proverb that the cobbler’s children all go barefoot. For being embedded in the car business for so many years, you would think that having a stable of reliable vehicles would be normal. Ah, but we are the cobbler’s children. We own 5 MGs—all in some degree of disrepair. You see, you have to have time and money at the same time to keep them all running. We never seem to get that combi-nation right. When we have time (for instance, when Bob was semi-retired), then the income is down. Now that Bob is working two part-time jobs that keep him plenty busy, there is money but no time to do it yourself. Both Com-monwealth Classics and British Motor Care are doing so well that Bob doesn't want to put our cars on list to make more room for (better) paying customers. So we are kind of stuck on the MG front.

Then it comes around to Donna. I lost my job April 8, just 18 months short of retirement (Social Security full ben-efits at 66 for my age group). Now Donna has time, little money (severance pay), and no car fixing expertise.

Westside Drive—June 11th. By Russ and Kate Sherrell

Russ and Kate will lead a drive west from Vancouver over many of the lovely and familiar driving roads in Multnomah and Washington counties. We'll leave at ap-proximately 11:00 am from the Commonwealth Classics Ltd. Coffee and Classics event. We'll plan a couple of hours drive time, ending at our neighborhood park in Hillsboro, where there are covered picnic tables available for anyone who would like to bring along a picnic lunch. Our home will be available for restrooms. Easy access back to Hwy 26 for those headed back east and many restaurants for those not bringing a picnic.

You come to depend on reliable transportation of your own. I have always had a car of my own. Even when Bob and I carpooled to work, I still had a car in the driveway that I could just use to go when I wanted to. Our son Ian’s car has been in the shop for an engine change for quite a while now. He is using my car in the meantime and Bob and I share the truck. Now the truck’s engine is very sick, and we are at risk of having no car at all!

None of the significant changes in my life can compare at all to Eric and Jeanne Pelton. Our hearts go out to Jeanne as we remember good times with Eric. And there are sever-al of our members who are battling with cancer, or other serious illness, and we wish them well.

Change is inevitable in our lives. The little changes are easy to adjust to, and we don’t even think about them. Big-ger changes take more mental energy to adjust to, and sometimes we need to consciously accept the change and get our head around it. It is the big changes, the life chang-ing events, that take the most out of us. And the rate of change matters too. If there is too much change, all at once, we can react to it negatively and get depressed or paralyzed by it. Change can be a positive in our lives if you let it. There is always something new around the corner. It is real-ly change that makes our lives move forward to new possi-bilities. I only wish that it wouldn’t all come at once. I can handle that better.

Take care,

Donna

Those interested walk to Patti's Home Plate Café around 10:00 AM for breakfast and the parade starts at noon. May

Club Meeting—May 13

We meet in the side-room at Stark Street Pizza (92nd and SE Stark Street in Portland). There is social (and/or dinner) time before the meeting which starts at 7:00 pm.

In the summer months, May through September, we go for a short drive after the meeting. For that reason, we will start the meeting at 7:00 pm rather than the usual 7:30. Please make a note of it. In May, Bob & Donna McNabb will be our tour leaders.

The business part of the meeting is generally short. If you have any issue to bring before the Board, you can bring it up at the club meeting. We welcome stories of where you have been with your car, or what you are working on fixing at the moment.

Bring an item for the raffle at the end. Proceeds go to expand and improve the Christmas Party Raffle.

Join us! It is the members that make the meetings live-ly.

Classics and Coffee—May 14

A social gathering for British Car owners on Saturday morning at 9:00 am at Commonwealth Classics in Vancou-ver. Drive your British car if possible but please come in any car. Address 1613 E. 4th St., Vancouver WA 98661.

In May, a tech session about Alignment will be present-ed by member James Duston. See page 1 for details.

Clinic—May 18: Fuel systems and Fuel

If the fuel system doesn't work, your car doesn't work. We'll start by covering Fuel pumps, electrical & me-

chanical, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each. An area that we are having trouble with is the fuel lines. There is some maintenance required, we'll cover that. Especially covering products and possible upgrades.

Then we will discuss Ethanol and what it does to our cars. A lot of research about fuel that affects our cars has surfaced over the last couple of years and we will look at that. Carburetor tuning and protection must be addressed. Treatments of your car and of the gas tank are now re-quired if you hope to keep running. It is surprising what is happening to the metals and rubber lines in the system and this damage can be reduced and possibly eliminated with the right additives and use.

We'll finish by learning how to tune carburetors to best run today's fuels. S.U.s, Strombergs, Webers and any other type of carburetor you may choose to use. Always the Wednesday after the Club Meeting

When: Social at 7:00; session starts at 7:30! Where: Foreign Parts Positively—19900 NE189th St.

Brush Prairie, WA 98606. North on I-205 over Columbia River. Exit Padden Parkway EAST and travel about 10 miles (through the village of Hockinson.) Turn right at 184th St. “Alderbrook” sign. Take a Hard Left first chance after the “Mountain Meadows” sign.

Hockinson Fun Days Car Show—June 4

This is a great way to see a small town parade and show off your car at the same time! All kinds of cars are welcome. Sponsored by our advertiser, Re-Born Automo-tive, the car show takes place on the lawn of their church in Hockinson, which is on the corner where the parade turns. Park your car about 11:00 am just before the streets close, then you can walk around town a bit before the parade starts at noon. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy the parade. The announcer is on the same corner so you can hear eve-rything. After the parade, the church’s Boy Scout Troop sells the best pulled pork sandwiches. Stay and have lunch.

Follow the directions to Keith’s shop (above) and you can’t miss Elam Lutheran Church in the heart of Hockin-son.

June 13-16 MG2016 is the fifth gathering of MG enthusiasts host-

ed by the North American Council of MG Registers. There are a lot of good genes in its pool…that of MG96, MG2001, MG2006, and MG2011. Each of these events developed their own personality and you can expect noth-ing less from MG2016!

You will want to arrive on Monday in order to attend our cocktail reception at Churchill Downs’ Derby Museum and Racing Facility. Running from 6pm-10pm, the recep-tion will have a cash bar (we advise eating dinner before or after your visit as there will be no food available during the event). You will have time to peruse the exhibits in the mu-seum as well as take a guided tour of the grounds. This is a not-to-miss event. Spaces are limited, so register early!

Our daily activities begin on Tuesday with driving tours, motorcoach tours, tech sessions, and Register Night. We’ll cap off the evening with a performance by the band Captain Rat and the Blind Rivets at the Crowne Plaza.

Wednesday will offer more opportunities for you to learn about your MG during our tech sessions; you can travel the fantastic roads of Indiana and Kentucky by taking one of the self-guided tours; hit downtown Louisville and visit the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory; visit the Muhammed Ali Center; take in an early afternoon baseball game at the home of the Louisville Bats, a farm league

team for the Cincinnati Reds. Plan on attending our auction at the Crowne Plaza on Wednesday evening!

Thursday is show day! We will have our MGs on dis-play at Waterfront Park on the banks of the Ohio River in downtown Louisville. Each Register will have their respec-tive models displayed by class for popular voting by at-tendees. (NAMGBR will also hold Concours.) Our awards ceremonies and banquet will be held at the Crowne Plaza on Thursday evening. Awards other than First Place (and other special awards) will be given out by Register prior to the banquet as we did at MG2011. We are pleased to an-nounce that DENNIS GAGE of “My Classic Car” will be our guest on Thursday at Waterfront Park. He will be wan-dering the showfield and will be available for “photo ops” and autographs. Dennis will also be our keynote speaker at the Awards Banquet that evening at the Crowne Pla-za. After the awards banquet, head out to the parking lot(s) to kick a few more tires and swap a few more lies before you head for home on Friday!

For Sale 1969 MGBGT $6,000

I just acquired a one family (father to son) 69 MGB GT. Comes with all original paperwork, all receipts, war-ranty book, a log with every tank of gas documented. 101,000 miles. Bought new in Seattle at British Motor Cars. Has been in dry storage for 21 years! The motor and engine bay all appear to be factory. Not running. It has had one repaint. Think maybe it was Pale Primrose. For some-one who wants a totally original car to do, this is it. I am looking for $6000. Worth that to the right person. Here are a couple of pictures. I'm a GM guy who would kill for this car if it was a 69 Chevelle in this unmolested condition so have no interest in doing this car but a fan of these cars would be equally excited. I had it cleaned up to get the dust etc. from 21 years off it. Imagine at about $100 a month for a big storage spot what they would have paid in 21 years!

91,300 miles, new carpeting, powder coated wheels, new seat covers, good tonneau cover, stored inside most of its life, repainted, runs good, well maintained by profes-sionals, third owner, top in usable condition.
