Alpha Alpha Chapter, Pi State, The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International
May 2018
“Each of us can be compared to a spoke in a wheel. Without each spoke functioning well, our wheel won’t turn.”
Founders’ Day Meeting – May 2, 2018
New Alpha Alpha Officers were installed by Membership Co-Chair Donna Noble.
Those installed were President Bridget Bishop, Vice President Mary Ann Geonie, and Treasurer Dr. Betsy Balzano. Incoming officers Diane Maurer, Secretary, and Sherry Johnson, Assistant Treasurer, were unable to attend the May 2 meeting and will be installed at the earliest upcoming meeting possible.
During the Founders’ Day program on May 2, Historical Records Chair Judy Fuller reviewed the foundations of DKG, Pi State, and Alpha Alpha Chapter.
A number of awards were presented. Recognition Award Chair Bridget Bishop and Committee Member Monica Cosgrove recognized members for their years of service, and presented Outstanding Service Awards to Jeanette Banker and Dr. Margie Lovett-Scott. Since Jeanette was unable to attend the meeting, the award was presented to Jeanette at her home.

From our President . . .
As always Alpha Alpha Chapter Members provide so many reasons for me to feel grateful and proud.
Thanks to Chairperson Judy Fuller for hosting our Founders’ Day meeting and Membership Committee Co-Chairs Linda Kotwas and Donna Noble plus Historical Records.
Congratulations and thanks to Jeanette Banker and Dr. Margie Lovett-Scott who received Alpha Alpha’s 2018 Outstanding Service Award at the meeting. Both Jeanette and Margie personify leadership through their unending support of our chapter and our members.
Congratulations also to Wanda Ward and Sheila Brady-Root upon receiving Pi State Awards. Wanda received the prestigious Frederica Hollister Award and Sheila received a travel stipend to pay for her attendance at the DKG International Convention in Austin this summer. These awards were announced at the April 2018 Pi State Meeting in Latham, NY. Because Wanda was unable to attend the spring meeting, she will be presented with her award at the fall Pi State meeting in Corning.
Please plan to attend our Scholar Awards Breakfast on Saturday, June 2, to meet with our scholars and their families, to receive updates from our scholars, to support our scholar awards funds by bidding in the silent auction, and to enjoy one another’s company. AND, please consider contributing items for the silent auction (and bring cash or your checkbook to bid on auction items on June 2).
One lucky person will go home from the June 2 session with the beautiful quilt created by Donna Noble. If you haven’t purchased your tickets for the drawingyet, your last changes will be on June 2 before the drawing.
I hope to see you on June 2 as we celebrate our scholars.
The 2018 Pi State’s prestigious Frederica Hollister Professional Educator Award was presented to our chapter’s Wanda Ward for her decades of service to public education and to DKG at the Chapter, Pi State, and International levels. The award includes a gift of $1,000 to a charity of Wanda’s choice and a separate $1,000 for her own use.
Alpha Alpha Chapter is also home to two previous Frederica Hollister Award recipients:

Lesli Myers Shares Lessons of Leadership
Dr. Lesli C. Myers has just published Life’s Leadership Lessons which includes 31 lessons (one for each day of the month) that end with some questions. She has accumulated these lessons during her years as an educator and administrator that has culminated in her position as Superintendent of the Brockport Central School District. Lessons include: "If you do it during practice, you’ll do it in the game," "Practicing purposeful forgiveness," and "Do you have the right to remain silent?" The book gets good reviews from chapter members whohave read it. Life’s Leadership Lessons is available from Amazon.com.
Margie Lovett-Scott And Faith Prather Text Used in Colleges Worldwide
Did you know that in 2012 Dr. Margie Lovett-Scott and Dr. Faith Prather co-authored Global Health Systems, a college textbook that compares health care delivery systems in seven nations? Margie has visited some of the countries included in the volume. The text, with accompanying teacher materials and test questions, is used in college programs in several countries. Margie is now retired from her position as Associate Professor of Nursing at The College at Brockport. Faith is Assistant Professor of Public Administration at The College at Brockport.
The textbook for International health, comparative studies, global health, international affairs, health administration and public health helps students to think more deeply about how health care is organized.

2018 Conference Theme:Stepping Up to Protect the World’s Children
About 600 educators from preK-16 schools around the country met on April 6
at the United Nations at the conference of the Committee on Teaching About
the United Nations (CTAUN) that focused on protecting the world’s children.
The conference included presentations by eight UN officials as well as a New
York City youth group, a university professor and representatives from activist
groups. Common themes were the importance of education, the prevention of
violence against children, and the importance of demonstrating the value of
non-violence and peace. A highlight of the conference was the presentation of
awards to school leaders who organize learning activities involving the United
Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (see graphic below).
Educators are encouraged to use CTAUN and UN resources to help them
involve their students
CTAUN works to provide educators with resources to use in teaching about the
UN and to incorporate global awareness into curricula and school activities.
CTAUN was founded in 1996 and is closely tied to but separate from The
Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

Disturbing Facts about Violence Against Children
Every five minutes a child dies somewhere as the result of
violence.
One half of all children, about 1 billion, have suffered some sort
of violence.
There are more refugees now than ever before and most of them
are children, many without adult care givers.
Child slavery is common worldwide, more so today than at any
time in history. Child slavery is involved in providing the rest of us
with items and services we enjoy (e.g., electronic equipment).
A disturbing sub-group of child slavery is sexual, and in many
instances involves children as they leave the foster care system.
