2016 Host Concept: Jazz overcomes differences

First started in 2011 as the Montreux Jazz Festival Japan in Kawasaki, the festival changed its name to

Kawasaki Jazz in 2015. This urban festival showcases performances throughout the city for an extended

period of ten days. Last year, the festival received the honor of winning the Best Live Performance Award in

the Fifth Nissan Presents Jazz Japan Award 2015 despite being the first year.

The festival serves as a bridge for the memory of diverse cultures and people that has saturated the city of

Kawasaki.

Originated from various genres, jazz carries the atmosphere of new yet nostalgic, making it perfect for

Kawasaki, known as the city of music. We want to work hand in hand with everyone to create a music festival

that builds a bridge to the future regardless of age and border with jazz as the new dimension. Music echoes

around the city for ten days, like adding colors to the late fall.

Welcome to Kawasaki Jazz.

Three Missions of Kawasaki Jazz: MUSIC × PEOPLE × FUTURE

Kawasaki Jazz has set three missions as shown below and aims to implement diverse collaborations through

festivals.

MUSIC BRIDGE → Music Performance

Offering Opportunities to Experience Music Unique to Kawasaki

Live music performances by top musicians from Japan and around the world at six venues in Kawasaki City.

The festival will showcase performances by reflecting the history of the city of Kawasaki, capitalizing on the

diversity of the area (site specific stage) through collaboration, and offering opportunities to treasure

encounters with others during the extemporaneous music performances.

PEOPLE BRIDGE → Regional Exchange

Programs to Discover, Connect, and Communicate Regional Resources

Starting before the festival, many local musicians will give free live performances in multiple places within

the city. We will create an informal space for people in our seven wards to experience music and interact

through music in order to make this festival into a city-wide festivity. Furthermore, there will be events in

collaboration with local companies and live jazz performances and concerts held within the city to add more

spark to the festivities.

FUTURE BRIDGE → Development of People

Supporting Various People in Kawasaki Who Engage in Music

In an effort to develop people who will support the future of Kawasaki through music, the festival will offer

workshops and programs to support people who perform in Kawasaki and enjoy music in the city such as

stage by students and events for children.
