June 3rd, Corpus Christi Sunday: Dear Brothers and Sisters, We are now beginning the second week continuing the season of Ordinary Time. These first two Sundays, last Sunday – Sunday of the Most Holy Trinity, and today – Corpus Christi

Sunday, we celebrate two central mysteries of our faith. God the Father is Creator. He created by speaking creation into being. The Word He spoke is the Second Divine Person of the Blessed Trinity, God the Son. In the Book of Proverbs God the Son was personified as the Wisdom of God. “Thus says the Wisdom of God:… ‘When the Lord established the heavens I was there,… and I was His delight day by day’.” In time the Eternal Word of God came into the world by becoming man. The Apostle John writes in chapter 1 of his Gospel, “In the beginning was the word, and the word was God, and the word was with God, and nothing came to be apart from that word. … And the word became flesh and dwelt among us.” The Second Person of the Most Blessed Trinity, “God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.” This is what we profess every Sunday in the Creed. Every Sunday and every day we celebrate this reality, God giving Himself to us as food. In John 6:51-56 Jesus says, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”… “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.” In Matthew 26 at the Last Supper “Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving it to his disciples said, ‘Take and eat; this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sin’.” This Solemnity of Corpus Christi (Body and Blood of Christ) is so essential to our faith and our existence as the Catholic Church. Saint Paul tells us in his letter to the Corinthians that the Church is the Body of Christ. How can we be His body unless we eat His Body. We become what we eat. Recall in John 6 Jesus says that if we eat His flesh and drink His blood we remain in Him and He in us. Wow! God comes to us and gives Himself to us as food so that we can be absorbed into Him so that we become members of His Body and form His Church. This always being our faith from the very beginnings of the Church, we did not always have this Solemnity. In 1208 Jesus appeared to Saint Juliana of Liége, a Norbertine nun. Jesus instructed her to plead for the institution of the feast of Corpus Christi. Pope Urban IV in 1264 instituted the Solemnity of Corpus Christi to be celebrated in the entire Church. When we receive the Body of Christ and when we gaze upon Him let us cry out as did the Apostle Thomas, “My Lord and My God.”

Esta siendo siempre nuestra fe desde los inicios de la Iglesia, no siempre tuvimos esta Solemnidad. En 1208 Jesús se apareció a Santa Juliana de Liége, una monja norbertina. Jesús le indicó que suplicara por la institución de la fiesta de Corpus Christi. El Papa Urbano IV en 1264 instituyó la solemnidad del Corpus Christi para ser celebrada en toda la Iglesia. Hace dos sábados, celebramos Pentecostés, el cumpleaños de la Iglesia. Este fue el tiempo prometido por Jesús cuando dijo que enviaría al Espíritu Santo para darles a los Apóstoles el coraje no solo para salir de su escondite y difundir las Buenas Nuevas a todo el mundo, sino también para ser comprendidos por las muchas personas diferentes que estaban visitando y viviendo en, y alrededor de Jerusalén. Para aquellos de nosotros que alguna vez hemos visitado otro país y nos hemos sentido frustrados al no poder entender el idioma, pueden imaginarse cuán asombrados estaban los habitantes, quienes escucharon a los Apóstoles hablando en sus propios idiomas.

De esto se trata la inmersión en dos idiomas. Se trata de dar a sus hijos la capacidad de pensar, hablar, leer y escribir en dos de los idiomas más hablados del mundo. ¿Puedes imaginar la ventaja que estos niños tendrán sobre sus contrapartes monolingües en el mundo laboral del mañana? San Juan nos habla de amor: "ágape", amor desinteresado y sacrificado, el tipo de Jesús que apareció en la cruz. Si realmente queremos que nuestros hijos tengan esta ventaja, a veces tenemos que hacer sacrificios. ¿A qué estaría dispuesto a renunciar, a sacrificarse, para que su hijo pueda disfrutar de esta ventaja de por vida?

A Call to Ministry

From among the Baptized some are called to be of service to their fellow parishioners during the Sunday Mass. The first qualification is Baptism. If you are baptized and living faithfully your baptismal call, most especially your attendance to Sunday Mass, you give meaning to your Baptism. There are three ministries that are within the Sanctuary and are very specific in requirements. Altar Server – I wish to begin a renewed form, which will be called “Knights of the Altar.” This will be a brother-hood of boys/men who have already received First Holy Communion and are in grade school, high school, college and adult men. This will also demand a commitment of parents to ensure that their sons have transportation to meetings and their assigned Masses and other services. Lector – Proclaimer of the word must have received First Holy Communion and Confirmation. If you are living in a relationship, it must be within the Sacrament of Marriage. To proclaim God’s word demands union with the Lord and His Church, as to be able to receive Holy Communion. A Lector must have a love for God’s word and a zeal to study it and pray with it. Must have a good command of the English/Spanish language so as to be understood proclaiming God’s word. Must have physical ability to walk up the steps of the sanctuary and the steps of the pulpit. Extra-Ordinary Minister of the Eucharist – Must have received First Holy Communion and Confirmation. If living in a relationship it must be within the Sacrament of Marriage. To assist with the distribution of Holy Communion you must have a love and devotion to our Eucharistic Lord. This demands a frequent Confession. This service demands strong, functional use of your hands and the ability to climb the stairs of the sanctuary. Good hygiene habits are important. Choir – This is for singing and/or playing an instrument. Must have a reasonably good sounding voice. If you play an instrument you should have a good knowledge of how to play it. Usher – You are on the front lines. Must be willing to greet your fellow parishioners and let them know that they are welcome. An usher is attentive to the surroundings and the needs of all present. You are the first to arrive and the last to leave. Sacristan Must be fully initiated in the Catholic Church. A Sacristan has a sense of order and an eye for detail. Arrives early and leaves after all has been cleaned up and put away. With a sense of care respect for all that is sacred this person cares for all this used for the Holy Mass.

We are currently looking for a couple of sacristans and altar servers to assist in the 5pm English mass held every Saturday. A sacristan is an assistant to

the priest, preparing all that is needed for the Mass. Altar servers perform a very important in liturgical services.
