Business SchoolThe Year 12 and 13 Accounting classes along with Ms Downs and Ms Carlisle were invited to attend a ‘Meet the Business Leaders’ working lunch at the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) head office in Parnell on 11 May. This was an opportunity for students to talk to successful young professionals in the business world and hear about the various stages of their careers. These business leaders rotated every 10 minutes to a new round table. Students were able to enjoy a lunch provided while they did this. The business leaders were Bachelor of Business university students, young Chartered Accountants, and business owners. It was an enjoyable three hours for our students to engage with professionals currently working in the industry. This gave our students an opportunity to hear different career choices that Accounting and Business Studies can give them in the future and what paths they may like to pursue in the future. Feedback from everyone was very positive and this event will definitely happen again.

A piece from “the Collection”Title: “The Long Ride Home” Artist: Dick Frizzell Medium: Screenprint Size: 730mm x730 mm

This screenprint is part of a collection of prints which are enlarged versions of the comic strip about the Phantom. Before television the Phantom appeared as a comic strip in a number of newspapers. He was always masked, always with his horse and dog, doing “heroic things in unnamed places”. Also known as “the ghost who walks” he wore a ring which when he punched people, left his mark on them.

“He also left his mark on the memory of a generation.”

This print recalls the “plain graphic” style of the original Phantom comic, enlarged and coloured to capture the essence of a time before “devices” were relied on for entertainment.

I was a “Tintin” man myself but “The Long Ride Home” takes me back as a kid to late nights sitting up late in bed taking part in wild and dangerous worldly adventures that comics had on offer.

Poetry WorkshopIn May, two of our students were selected to attend a poetry writing workshop put on by the Michael King Writers’ Centre. Mekaylar Kolofua 12Ab and Bailey Naera 11Tg spent a day at the National Library in Parnell, working with students from other Auckland schools under the tutelage of two published poets, Chris Tse and Serie Barford, where they learned skills to apply to their own creative writing and participated in brainstorming and sharing sessions. This was an excellent opportunity for the girls to hone skills they are already using as members of our school’s Spoken Word Poetry and Writing groups. Mekaylar and Bailey now have the chance to submit their writing for publication in the Signals literary journal.

“To Kill a Mockingbird” theatre tripWith many of our Level 2 English students studying the classic novel on race and injustice “To Kill A Mockingbird”, we are incredibly lucky that the Auckland Theatre Company is currently producing a play of the novel at the Civic Theatre in Auckland City. An excited bunch of students joined several other school groups for an enthralling performance which not only cemented their understanding of the text, but gave many of them their first experience of the Civic Theatre’s glory. Students sat forward in their seats, gripped as the wrongly accused Tom Robinson was cross-examined in a very powerful courtroom scene, and everyone agreed afterwards that the play had been an amazing experience.

Junior Speech competitionAll junior students must write and deliver a speech as part of their annual assessments, and we are often bowled over by some shining stars. To capitalise on their talents, the English Department held the Junior Speech Competition last month, where the top two students from each Year 9 and 10 English class represented their peers and went head-to-head for the Junior Speakers Cup which will be presented at the Junior Awards Ceremony in December. Topics ranged from “What makes me who I am?” to “An environmental issue we need to solve” to “My Hero”. Judged by an audience of their peers, our young speakers were nothing short of impressive.

PE & Health DepartmentIt has been another busy term in the PE & Health department. Sadly, we have said goodbye to Mr Tee who had been at OHS for 8 years, we wish him well in his next adventure at Rodney College. There has been a change around in the management of the department with Mrs Cheshire taking over as Head of Department and Mr Hussey and Mr James as Co-Assistant Heads of Department. We welcome Ms Stretton who is beginning her journey with us at OHS from the beginning of Term 3. Miss Manase, a student teacher, has returned to us for Term 2. It has been a great experience for her to get the opportunity to work with our students and continue developing her knowledge. We wish her well with the final weeks of her studies and future in teaching.

Our mini gym is quickly becoming a leading fitness suite, thanks to the kind sponsorship of

Auckland Airport we have a brand new Crossfit rig. Many Physical Education students are enjoying making use of this fantastic facility this term and the Level 2 students will be getting the opportunity next term when they start their training programmes. Maybe the next Crossfit champion will be inspired here.

Level 2 and 3 Health students have been busy working through their assessments, with the students looking at the importance of having strategies to be able to cope when faced with a change or challenging situation and researching ethical debates.

Our senior ODE students have spent time learning and refining their archery skills, with students coming in at the weekend for extra practice. Whilst our senior PED and PTC students have been involved in learning about

biomechanical principles and how they relate

to sport and exercise, some have been out in

the school community working as coaches with

many of our sports teams, whilst others have

been busy analysing their tennis serves and

identifying ways they can improve and become

the next Roger Federer or Serena Williams.

In the Junior school, the Year 10 students

have been involved in ‘Playing Safe’, learning

this through Outdoor Education, Rugby and

Fitness. During their Outdoor Education

lessons the students have been participating

in a variety activities, including how to make a

stretcher using their knowledge of rope knots,

let’s hope the stretchers hold the injured. The

Year 9 students have been learning about the

importance of ‘teamwork and cooperation’

through Netball, Touch and ABL.

Last year OHS was extremely fortunate to have been the recipient of an Auckland Airport Gold Medal Award. The aim of the award is to develop healthy young people in the Auckland region through health and fitness programmes. OHS was able to purchase a Crossfit Cage with funds provided by Auckland Airport.

We are delighted with the cage which has proved to be a very popular addition to our fitness circuit. PE classes, Sports teams and Service Academy students have all benefitted from incorporating the Crossfit Cage into their fitness training. The cage is located in the Mini Gym which has been fitted with a new low impact floor and is where the Kettlebells, Exercycles and Climbing Wall can also be found.

Students are encouraged to be active and fit for their general health and wellbeing. Obesity is a significant contributor to many of the diseases that plague our communities. Fitness and having a well balanced diet are recognised as being important in bringing down the rates of these diseases which cost families and society dearly. It is very encouraging to see so many of our pupils taking advantage of all the opportunities made available to them to have fun and stay active.

Onehunga High School would like to thank Auckland Airport for their support of our students.

International DepartmentThis term we have been welcoming some new students from Germany, Thailand, Japan and China. It has been exciting seeing new young people coming into the school; taking up the challenge of international education away from their home countries.

Thank you to the many homestay families who host our students and support these young people in their aspirations and academic programmes. It is so important that they are nurtured and cared for and we appreciate the work and commitment this takes.

In July and August we are welcoming four short study tours:

China – Dinghai No 1 School Japan – Kaichi Gakuen Junior High School

Japan – Yokohama Suiryo Junior High School Taiwan – Ching Cheng High School

Our Starpath programme is very supportive and we also acknowledge the work done by families to attend these meetings and support their homestay student.

ChineseChinese Speech CompetitionOn the 2nd of May Katherine Huang 10Pg, Caitlin Taylor 9Ku and Victoria Talalelei Amani 9Kt represented OHS in the 2016 Auckland Chinese Competition. They all received a Highly Recommended Award.

Dragon Boat FestivalOn the 4th of June, students from the Year 11 Chinese class were invited to the Dragon Boat Festival which was hosted by the Global Federation of Chinese Business Woman of New Zealand. After the formal speeches we performed the song “Dui bu qi wo de zhong wen bu hao”. We then created our very own pin cushions which was a lot of fun. After this we enjoyed being taught how to make rice dumplings (zong zi). At the end of the festival we performed the dance of “Xiao Ping Guo” for our wonderful hosts. Our favourite part of the day was performing the dance and also getting the crowd to dance with us. We had delicious food, and a lot of us tried some new food for the very first time, like twisted prawns and fish ball soup. We had an amazing time at the festival and look forward to enjoying learning a lot more about Chinese culture.

Drama DepartmentAn operatic adaptation of a classical Greek story blows students’ mindsThanks to a wonderful collaboration between OHS and the Basement Theatre in Auckland City, our senior drama students were able to experience an incredible night of drama last month. Little did they know they would be witnessing a mash-up of an opera written in the 17th century based on a doomed love story written 20 years BC. “Dido and Aeneas” was performed by the Unstuck Opera company whose imaginative rendition involved the audience moving from room to room for each scene, and often being too close for comfort to the superb singers. Our students agreed they had never seen anything like it, calling the event “AMAZing!” and agreeing it was a brilliant night out.

GatewayWe have had a great start to Gateway this year. We are lucky to have such fantastic support from our local business community, with many businesses stepping forward to support our young people with work experience.

As a result we have been able to offer students work experience in a large range of workplaces, from Education and Health, to the Construction and Automotive industries, as well as many more.

We have had overwhelmingly positive feedback about our students, with employees commenting on their initiative, independence and positive attitudes.

Happily, a number of students have already been offered part-time work or the possibility of work next year as a result of their hard work on placements. This is a great reflection on how well the students are representing both themselves and Onehunga High School.

We are very grateful to all the businesses that support us. We are always keen to hear from any business that would like to provide a student with an insight and experience of that industry.

Services AcademyIt’s been another busy term for the Services Academy with the students involved in a variety of activities. In mid May five Year 13 students (Noah Amiatu, Tylar Anitonia, John Kaifa, Peta Pau’u and Joseph Tangulu) were selected to attend the Service Academies Basic Leadership Camp at Mangawahai. This five day course is organised and conducted by the New Zealand Defence Force Youth Defence Unit (North) and represents an opportunity for the students to further develop their leadership skills. A huge well done goes to Peta who was awarded Top Female on the course (out of 28). A great achievement.

On the 20th June the students set off for the Bushcraft Camp which involved learning survival skills over five days at the top of Woodhill Forest, South Head. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were a credit to the school throughout the week.

The Academy is now preparing for the Tough Guy/Gal Challenge (a 6 or 12k Mud Run) to be held at Woodhill Sands in late June. The students hope to be competing again for the Boot Trophy with Glenfield, Kelston Boys and James Cook High School.

Level 3 Calculus and Physics visit to Rainbows End Each year the Level 3 Calculus students and Level 3 Physics students have the opportunity to visit Rainbows End. The purpose of the trip is to allow the students to apply their knowledge of physics and calculus in practical real world applications. Apart from the great learning opportunity, it is also a fun day.

On arrival at Rainbows End the students all diligently worked on the problems the calculus and physics teachers had prepared for them, at times braving the rain to observe or experience some of the rides in order to answer the questions. Once the work was done it was time to have fun and enjoy the park. As it was a rather damp and cold day, the park was very quiet which meant that there were no queues and no delays in getting on to the rides. A great time was had by all.

As well as being great fun, the trip was a wonderful learning opportunity. Our students managed to combine the learning aspects of the trip with having fun and were great ambassadors for OHS.

Building SchoolThe Building School featured on TV3 the Story and on the Radio Live drive show. Duncan Garner was keen to see what schools are doing to promote the apprenticeship pathway into the construction industry. Duncan was impressed with the Building School programme at Onehunga High School and enjoyed the up front and honest nature of our students.

We have had some very positive outcomes from the show. Students from last year’s class have gained employment and apprenticeship opportunities and this year’s group have gained work experience opportunities. If these students

impress in their Gateway placements then full employment and apprenticeship opportunities often follow. Thank you TV3, Duncan Garner and his team.

We would also like to thank Mr Ernie Meyer for his continued support of our students. Ernie donates his time and project manages the house build on behalf of the Onehunga One Tree Hill Rotary Club.

Mr Bob Mitchell a former parent has also offered his time to work with our students. We are very fortunate that we have people such as Ernie and

Bob who want to give back to our young people.

The school has formed a strong relationship with Cowperthwaite Roofing. A team from Cowperthwaite’s fixed our roof with two past building school students Vaughan Cooke and William Duncan as part of the team and with Nathan Vaipa a building school student on his gateway placement. Both Vaughan and William gained their apprenticeships from impressing on their Gateway placements.

We would also like to thank Paslode and Prada for the donations of nails and timber connectors.

“What makes me, ME” The students developed ideas to paint a personal mask. After their reflections about themselves they looked at Sam Michell’s style of art work for inspiration. Particularly his images of faces, and how the faces have images painted on them. Students then designed images that they felt represented themselves. Their painting skills required brush stokes, layered colours and shading, use of a very small brush and detailing.

The Year 11 dance students were lucky to have a workshop with guest teacher Joshua Faleatua, world hip hop champion from Identity Dance Crew. The Year 12 dance students were also fortunate to spend several lessons with Isom Da Silveira, a highly experienced capoeira master from Brazil.

This term also saw a combination of Year 12 and 13 students performing at YouDance, youth dance festival. YouDance is a non-competitive youth dance festival with a variety of secondary schools and youth dance companies sharing their work over two evening performances. The students performed 3 contemporary dance pieces at the Raye Freedman Centre for a sold out show. Two music students, Eugene Teulilo 13Db and Malachi Samuelu 13Db, also contributed to the success of the performance with their composition and live performance of drumming. Onehunga High School students performed amazingly and represented the dance department and school with professionalism.

Students have also started preparing for MOOVIT, an arts collaboration with Onehunga High School, the Royal New Zealand Ballet and the Vodafone Events Centre. This year sees the students creating and performing dance to a selection of remixed Beethoven tracks. MOOVIT will be taking place on the 5th of September this year, save the date.

Director of Sport Winter Report2016 winter sport has begun with a record amount of teams entered and participation on the rise which is great news. We must thank our awesome staff and volunteers who give their time to sport and make it possible to continue to increase participation and strive for excellence throughout our sports programme.

The winter season was always going to be a tough one for our elite sports teams as many of our teams have lost key players and remain in top grades as we battle week in week out to compete with the best in Auckland. There is some great talent coming through the school but it may take some time to be as competitive as we would like to be. This year will be a battle of survival for these teams and will test our character as the season continues.

With so many teams this winter it’s great to see so many students involved in sport and is an encouraging sign for the future.

Our Premier Girls basketball team have had a great start to the season unbeaten so far and a great chance of making a good run to be in the premier competition in 2017. This may have something to do with a certain Anthony Keung coaching the girl’s team this year.

Netball has had a strong start to the season with our Premier Netball Girls being very competitive in Senior A with some tight wins and losses. And also our Senior A team are unbeaten so far this season.

Make sure you get out and support our teams this winter it’s a great sight to see staff and families on the side-lines cheering our students on and I know they appreciate it.

You can watch highlights of the 1st XV Boys on the rugby channel each week as they continue to battle against the top teams in Auckland on Sky.

Good luck to all our teams for the remainder of the season, look forward to seeing some more positive results.

1ST XVThe 2016 season began with joint 1st and 2nd XV trainings starting week two of Term One. Numbers sometimes in the 50s made it necessary to train in smaller groups to cope. We were lucky to have the help of Josh, Laki , Chris and later Calvary to help give some balance and expertise. The commitment to this endeavour has seen the 1st team gain promotion back into A grade and the 2nds start the year with some excellent victories.

Both teams are very well lead by Joseph Tangulu 13Pr and EJ Viliamu 13Db.

The 1st squad has taken a few games to adjust to the pace and physicality of the heavily weighted 1a competition. However, anyone who has taken the time to see how our lads are adapting to this will see courage and commitment beyond compare. For that we are grateful and, as always, hopeful for the second half of the season.

We would also like to thank the Senior Management for their ongoing commitment to supporting our lads. Much needed and appreciated by all.

Sports FeeA reminder to all students and families that the co-curricular fee of $80 must be paid before the end of Term 2. We will be reminding students this term and sending letters home towards the end of term to students that have not paid.

Ralph Pim – Talent, Leadership and CharacterGreat photo of Ralph Pim in our Sports Polo back in America, Ralph has been leading the way in developing a Values based leadership programme that we continue to develop and implement. The focus is to not only get the best out of our students on the field but to also lift our off field appearance, standards and behaviour. The programme is currently in over ten schools in Auckland and is a great tool to build a great sporting culture.

Junior and Senior Boys Badminton

The Junior and Senior boys badminton teams got off to an enthusiastic start at the beginning of Term 2, with autumn fading into winter, paving the way for this year’s season of winter sports at Mount Roskill Grammar School. Our junior team includes Jeremy Moran 9Ku, Issac Pomana 9Wv, Calvin Wong 9Wv and Kyle Moodley 9Ku, while our Senior team includes, Eufemio Castro 12Ab, Farzad Khaleghi 12By, Ricky Rong 13Wi, Edward Samuelu 12Pj and Jason Zhang 12Ne. The boys have all been having fun playing and making new friends with players from other teams from various schools. We have not been winning all our games, but we certainly have been winning hearts, with our students’ passion for the game and their grace in defeat, while playing with true sportsmanship, embodying our school’s motto, “Loyalty and Courage.” With obvious potential in the boys, we look forward to the season and the rise of some shining stars!

1ST XI Boys Football Mid-Season Report

2016 began with a fantastic trip down to Rotorua for our pre-season tournament which was a great opportunity for our boys to get lots of game time before the season started. After a tough 2015 finishing 6th and just hanging on in A1, 2016 was always going to be hard with the loss of some key players.

It has been a very hard season mentally so far and I’m really proud of the boy’s attitudes and continual hard work to improve. We have lost our opening six games. I look forward to our remaining eight games to see if we can reverse some scores and start gaining some points to avoid relegation.

On a positive note we have some very young players this year and I think they are doing such a fantastic job. A big thank you to our young guns this year, Elijah Belton 9Fa, Isaiah Rewha 11Fi, Te Whatu Taiepa 11Ed, Jarrod Gordon 11Tg and John Ryan 11Wg for stepping up and playing some great football. Leading the team this year is Max Frear 13Kr and Tawhiorangi Taiepa 13Kr, who are doing a great job on and off the field.

Lastly thanks to Chris Harris for managing the team again this year and also doing extras for the boys.

U14 Football

The Year 10s had a dominant start to their season, beating Green Bay 10-3, a close loss to Avondale, and a hard fought victory over Mt Roskill. We’ve had many returning players from last year, who are forming an even more close-knit team by being involved in the Sports Specific Football programme for Year 10 students. Some players who are shining especially bright so far; Jayden Chiplin 10Wz, with his ability to finish from long distance and work the wings to get a good ball into the box, Peter-James Shortland 10Cc with his cool, calm, and collected nature at left back, and Phynix Tangimataiti 10Ae who charges in to clear anything that threatens the box. We are looking forward to an exciting and successful season.

U15 LEAGUE Our 9 aside U15 boys league team is currently having an up and down season. Our core players Semisi Ahoatu 11Vi and Metanoea Saulala 10Fz are currently leading the way in terms of tackles and hit ups. Our losses to St Pauls and Aorere were due to player fatigue in the last 10 minutes. We are currently in Division 2 and hope to regain our momentum in the next few games. There is no doubt in the effort we apply, we just need to work on the execution. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our families and caregivers for coming to help us week in and week out as well as our Coach, Eugene Teulilo (Prefect) 13Db.

1st XI Girls Football

This season has been a learning experience for all of the girls. We secured a 3-2 win over Kings College a couple of weeks ago, which has been the highlight of the season so far. It has been rough at times, some players with injuries and scoreboards just not going our way, but we power through week in, week out. A few key players to mention who have stood out include Mele Hala 13Lw, our new goalkeeper. Mele has vastly improved after never playing football before, and leads from the back. Mele is a great addition to our team. Junior players Jasmine Nathan 10Wz, McKenzie Amodeo 10Ll and Tessa Forbes-Dawson 10Rc have really stepped up to the premier level and are setting the standards for players within our team. With a few more games coming up this term, we are looking to secure a few more wins going into the Auckland Provincial Championship next term.

Just as the memories of the Onehunga High School environment as it was for the students of the 1960s and 70s are a world away from the school today’s students will remember, how different will the Onehunga High School of 2040 be to the school of 2016?

Today, we reflect on some of the physical changes that took place between 1959 and the late 1990s.

Taken in 1960, and already home to over 400 third and fourth form students, the frantic efforts to have the school completed before the official opening in two months is evident. Note the graders working on the road and the bike stands at the front of the school, there was nowhere else for them to go! The house at the bottom of this photo was the senior girls common room for a number of years until it was demolished and replaced by S Block.

By the early 1980s the school had changed quite dramatically. More classrooms had been added, the Gymnasium, Library and S Block and a cafeteria completed, and prefabs lined much of the upper Pleasant St boundary.

Taken in the late 1990s Te Haerenga, the school Marae, opened in 1996 can be seen in the background. This photo records very well an area of the school where a number of changes were to shortly take place.
