Message from the President Message from the President

s 2013 came to a close, I began to reflect on Old Dominion University’s

Strategic Plan. The strategic plan was originally drafted in 2008, during

my first year as President. The plan was intended to guide us through

the year 2014. It’s hard to believe that over five years have passed since that

ambitious plan was implemented. I am proud to say that we have achieved all of

our goals along the way.

For starters, we wanted to focus on providing students with the tools they need

to succeed. Over the years we have accomplished this in a variety of ways; for

example, in 2013 we budgeted for 50 new faculty positions in an effort to provide

students with greater access to professors through smaller class sizes. Adjustments

such as this have led to an increase in student retention of 7 percent since the

strategic plan was launched in 2009. We also strive to provide our students with

real-world opportunities in addition to classroom instruction. Recently, we

launched the Monarch Millionaire Program. The goal of the Monarch Millionaire

Program is to teach students about personal finance topics, such as budgeting,

banking, credit cards and life after college. And later in this report you can read

about the Student Managed Investment Fund, a course that allows students to

invest real money and learn the ins-and-outs of the stock market. These resources

are just a few of the tools that we have implemented over the past several years.

In addition to enhancing the student experience, we are constantly striving to

gain a national reputation through key academic programs. In 2013, we graduated

our first class of students from our new Modeling and Simulation Engineering

undergraduate degree program. This undergraduate degree is the only one of its

kind in the country. We also remain focused on the arts at Old Dominion. We

are literally building up the arts with a new studio and visual arts building in the

University Village. The arts building was funded in part by a generous gift from

Richard and Carolyn Barry and the additional studios and annex were made

possible by a gift from James A. Hixon. Adjacent to the new art building we broke

ground on an amphitheater thanks to the support of Macon and Joan Brock.

The arts are alive and well here at ODU and have helped us to enrich the quality

of campus life!

We continue to invest in research to spur economic growth in Hampton Roads

and beyond. This includes a substantial investment in the field of bioelectrics. We

recently hired Dr. John Catravas as the Sentara Endowed Chair in Bioelectrics.

The chair was established with a gift of $2 million from Sentara Healthcare.

Dr. Catravas and his fellow researchers in the Frank Reidy Research Center for

Bioelectrics hold more than 40 U.S. patents among them. And thanks to an

additional $3.5 million from Frank Reidy himself, the center will continue to be

a cornerstone for cutting-edge research in the field.

For the fifth year in a row our Community Development Corporation

(CDC) sponsored the Hampton Roads Conference for Girls and Young Women

here on campus. The conference hosts a variety of workshops meant to build

leadership skills, facilitate career development, and promote active and healthy

lifestyles and self-esteem for young women. This is just one of the many ways that

we build strong civic and community partnerships. In addition to the conference,

the CDC also sponsored a program for 95 children aimed at promoting bully-

proof environments. And, as many of you know, Old Dominion Athletics joined

a new conference this year. We are proud to play for Conference USA. This move

has given us the opportunity to elevate athletics at ODU while drawing attention

to the University in regions beyond the East Coast.

As you can see, we have accomplished a lot in the years since the strategic

plan was born and these accomplishments would not be possible without the

support of donors like you. Thank you for your continued support and for

sharing our vision for Old Dominion University.

s you can see from President Broderick’s

remarks, we have successfully achieved our

strategic plan goals over the past five years

under his leadership. The strategic plan has guided

our fundraising efforts over the past several years

and, since President Broderick took office, we have

raised over $100 million in gifts and commitments.

We continue to surpass our fundraising goals and

2013 was another banner year for fundraising at

Old Dominion. We raised over $32 million last year.

Included in the $32 million total is a

commitment from alumnus Mark Strome ’78 and

his wife, Tammy, for $11 million. Their gift is

the second largest single gift in the history of Old

Dominion. Funding from the Stromes will be used

to develop an entrepreneurial curriculum at ODU

which will include multidisciplinary coursework

as well as an entrepreneurial center on campus. In

honor of their generosity, the College of Business and

Public Administration has been renamed the Strome

College of Business. The lead gift from the Stromes

has generated plenty of excitement and in response,

several more alumni and friends have committed to

support entrepreneurism at Old Dominion. You can

read more about this energizing new program later

on in this report.

Each year I am amazed by the continued growth

and development of Old Dominion University.

Not just the physical campus but our educational

and athletic pursuits as well. Just look at some of

our distance learning opportunities as an example;

U.S. News and World Report magazine listed ODU’s

online graduate nursing program as the 28th best in

the nation in its 2013 rankings of higher education

institutions. In addition, ODU’s online graduate

programs in engineering and education received

rankings of 43rd and 68th, respectively. For the

second consecutive year, ODU was one of 690

higher education institutions nationwide that were

named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education

Community Service Honor Roll, which provides

recognition, from the highest levels of the federal

government, for “exemplary” commitments to

service and civic engagement.

Our programs are not the only ones receiving

accolades, our people are too. Wayne Talley, the

Frederick W. Beazley Professor of Economics and

executive director of ODU’s Maritime Institute, received

the 2013 Distinguished Transportation Researcher

Award from the Transportation Research Forum. We

also had several Fulbright award recipients; alumnus

Zachary Fitzpatrick and faculty member John McManus

were out on Fulbright grants during the past academic

year and, in 2013, student Mark Levenstein and faculty

member Lytton Musselman were awarded Fulbright

grants to be completed starting this upcoming academic

year. The students, faculty and staff at Old Dominion

continue to amaze me and I am proud that my daily

work helps to support such deserving individuals.

As always, the support of alumni and friends like

you was a defining factor in our success. Thank you

for your continued commitment to Old Dominion

University. We look forward to all that is to come as we

wrap up the past five years of our strategic plan and look

ahead to the next five years and beyond!

A Wise Investment

hat would you do if someone gave you $250,000

of their own money to invest in the stock market?

Hopefully, do your research and invest wisely.

In 2009, alumni Wally ’71 and Linda ’71 Haislip donated

$250,000 to create the Student Managed Investment Fund

at Old Dominion University and students have been doing

their research and investing the money wisely ever since. With

the donation came the creation of a new course in the Strome

College of Business called the Student Managed Investment

Fund or FIN441.

Students enrolled in FIN441 are tasked with applying the

theoretical knowledge of finance to managing a real portfolio.

The class is divided into two groups–managers and analysts.

Each class period, the students are tasked with researching

various companies and deciding where they want to invest

their money. Students are able to conduct their research

using real-world technology and resources thanks to the Greg

Lumsden Trading Room and Research Lab. The lab, made

possible by a gift from Gregory Lumsden ’82, boasts 24

Bloomberg Terminals with access to real-time market data. Not

only do students have the opportunity to use the terminals

to do research but they receive Bloomberg Certification after

successfully completing FIN441.

The Student Managed Investment Fund is guided by

Professor Mohammad Najand. In addition to his role as

professor, Dr. Najand is also the Chair of the Department of

Finance in the College of Business and Public Administration.

He understands the value of the experience that these students

are gaining by participating in the investment fund course.

One such student, Ryan Hanley, enjoyed his experience

with the SMIF so much that he now participates as a

student manager after completing FIN441 his junior year.

Hanley feels that the investment fund has prepared him

to be competitive in the job market because he has real-

world experience managing a large portfolio of investments.

He believes that his formal finance education from Old

Dominion taught him the fundamentals needed for a career

in finance but says that he stepped into “a new arena” when

he started participating in the Student Managed Investment

Fund. The experience has been invaluable.

Since the inaugural class in 2009, the students have

increased the value of the fund to over $480,000. Using

earnings from their investments, several students have been

able to participate in the Redefining Investment Strategy

Education (RISE) Conference held annually in Dayton,

Ohio. During the conference, students attend breakout

sessions and learn about everything from investments and

portfolio management to financial markets and the economy.

Like many financial organizations, the Student Managed

Investment Fund reports to an advisory board. It just so

happens that the advisory board for the SMIF is composed

of ODU alumni with careers and experience in the field of

investment management which provides a great networking

opportunity for students participating in the fund. Talk about

giving students the tools they need to succeed!

Supporting Future Engineers

trailblazer for women in engineering, Donna

Scassera Fischer wants to inspire the next

generation of engineers at Old Dominion

University. Through an endowment to the Frank Batten

College of Engineering and Technology, she hopes to

positively affect student engineers to collaborate and

communicate to solve real-world problems.

When she first moved to Virginia years ago as a young

engineer, she quickly realized the value and impact

ODU had on the community. Now as an industry and

community leader thinking about the region’s future, she

sees the ability to educate bright, thoughtful engineers

as essential to Hampton Road’s economic and cultural

well-being. She has long believed that the best engineered

solutions come from the creative and practical application

of technology, explored through hands-on projects.

Acting on this heuristic point of view, Ms. Fischer

established the Engineering Student Project Endowment

in 2013 under her maiden name, Donna Lynn Scassera.

The endowment will help provide financial support to

student engineers for expenses directly related to their

projects, such as materials, services, travel, internships, and

competition costs. Her gift aligns with the collaborative

spaces designed into the Engineering School’s new Systems

Research Building, which features project studios and

state-of-the-art labs. To honor Ms. Fischer, the Dean’s

Suite and Atrium in the new building will be dedicated in

her name.

Through the direct support of student projects, Donna feels

she can best assist young people entering the field, especially

aspiring women engineers. “We need to be mentors and

roles models for the next generation of women engineers,

and I see the endowment as part of this greater effort,” said

Ms. Fischer, who mentors ODU women engineers and

helps them find internships or full-time employment.

Ms. Fischer received her degree in civil engineering from

Penn State University before moving to Virginia. She

briefly studied at Old Dominion University in preparation

for her professional licensing, which she still maintains.

After many years at M. Rosenblatt & Son, she founded

DLS Engineering Associates. DLS provides professional

engineering and integrated logistics services to a variety

of federal government customers in Hampton Roads and

beyond.

Today, Donna has more than 30 years of experience in

the analysis, design, development, and implementation

of engineering and logistics services. She is a member of

the Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology’s

Advisory Board and a past president of the American

Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE). Ms. Fischer has

two grown daughters with whom she thoroughly enjoys

spending time. And, if you can’t catch her advocating for

ODU’s engineering school or running her business, you will

find her at ODU football games.

< Inspiring Entrepreneurs

n 2013, Old Dominion received its second largest gift in history. The

$11 million gift from Mark ’78 and Tammy Strome is being used to

launch a major initiative to develop an entrepreneurial curriculum

geared toward students across all disciplines at ODU. In addition to

supporting the development of an entrepreneurial curriculum, the gift

is being used to create an entrepreneurial center on campus. This new

initiative aligns perfectly with our ongoing commitment to our strategic

plan goals of providing students with the tools to succeed, gaining

a national reputation through key academic programs and investing

strategically to spur economic growth.

The focus on entrepreneurism will foster an academic environment

that promotes creativity and collaboration. The curriculum will be available

to all students, not just those studying business. President John Broderick

described the multidisciplinary approach in a recent interview when he

said, “Startups will continue to trigger economic growth and anyone from

the arts to the sciences becomes a potential player in job creation with

education, encouragement and inspiration.”

Many students at ODU are already thinking like entrepreneurs and the

gift from the Strome Family Foundation will help to increase the support

available to them, and to faculty, who need the resources to take their

ideas to the next level. Just this past year, three Old Dominion students

launched a project called CampusWise. The goal of the project is to make

some aspects of college life more convenient for students on a budget.

Together, the students–Franck Tchouambou, Daniel Calabro and John

Polizos–developed a website to help ODU students leverage resources

through textbook sharing, ridesharing and more. And two years ago, four

other ODU students developed an app called StudentTA through their

company ArcDNA. The app is designed to help college students with time

management and has been downloaded thousands of times.

True to the spirit of entrepreneurism, the gift from the Stromes

inspired several more major gifts from Old Dominion alumni and friends

starting with a gift from Lee Entsminger ’74 to establish the Entsminger

Entrepreneurship Fellows Program. The funds from the Entsminger

Entrepreneurship Fellows Program will offset the costs associated with

continuing educational opportunities in the entrepreneurism field for

faculty interested in including innovation and entrepreneurship into

their coursework. In addition, businesswoman Nancy Grden established

the Nancy L. Grden Endowment for Entrepreneurship to award student

entrepreneurs in support of their go-to-market plans and serve as a catalyst

for other donors to fund students in this phase of entrepreneurism. As

if that was not exciting enough, L. Scott Trainum created the Trainum -

ICG Entrepreneurism Endowment to support the operations of the new

entrepreneurial center on campus. Most recently, we received a gift from

Marsha K. Hudgins ’76 to establish the Women Entrepreneurs in Business

Speaker Series.

Entrepreneurism is alive and well at Old Dominion. We are not only

providing education to young and motivated individuals in the traditional

sense but now, with the help of our donors, we are also able to cultivate

their business ideas, provide them with specific knowledge on business

management and give them all the tools to successfully become the

business owners and entrepreneurs of tomorrow.

Empowering a Generation

ince the implementation of the University strategic plan five years

ago, we have been committed to building strong civic and community

partnerships. The Community Development Corporation (CDC) at

Old Dominion University hosted several events this past year aimed at

supporting young people in the community.

In May, the CDC hosted the Fifth Annual Hampton Roads Conference for

Girls and Young Women on campus. The theme of the conference was “Girls

Rule the World: Enjoying Your Journey.” The event was designed to educate and

empower young women to become productive citizens. Over 400 girls, parents

and mentors attended the conference. The girls, ages 10 to 18, participated in

workshops aimed at helping them to learn about body image, healthy lifestyles

and leadership, while their parents attended simultaneous workshops to

encourage them to reinforce the values from the conference at home.

The girls in attendance enjoyed a special treat when they listened to speeches

from Olympic gold medalist Francena McCorory and from Clenise Platt,

keynote speaker, life coaching expert and ODU alumna. Both women shared

stories of inspiration and encouragement.

“The Conference for Girls and Young Women is a great opportunity to

encourage and empower girls to pursue their goals and dreams,” said Gretchen

Edwards Bodmer, PR and marketing coordinator for the Women’s Center,

conference workshop presenter and planning committee member. “At an age

where different societal pressures affect their self-esteem and pull them away

from their goals and dreams, this conference is a way to help them refocus on

their personal value and future contributions to our world.”

In addition to the girls conference, the CDC hosted a BullyProof Camp for

95 children. The camp, featuring the Gracie family technique of nonviolence,

strives to promote bully-proof environments. The program is geared toward

children ages 5 to 14.

On five consecutive afternoons in August, children were coached by Rener

Gracie in the art of dealing with bullies. Gracie is a 4th degree black belt in

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and is the head instructor of the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in

Torrance, Calif. He and his family used their experiences in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu

to develop the Gracie BullyProof program to teach confidence and character

development to children.

Both the Conference for Girls and Young Women and the BullyProof

Camp are designed to empower young people and build confidence and

A Decade of Bioelectrics

or more than 10 years the Frank Reidy Research Center

for Bioelectrics (CBE) has been a hub of research activity

on campus and has bolstered our strategic plan initiative

to invest strategically in research to spur economic growth. In

2002, the Frank Reidy Research Center for Bioelectrics was

founded by Karl Schoenbach, Old Dominion Eminent Scholar

and “Father of Bioelectrics,” and by its namesake, local engineer

and entrepreneur Frank Reidy. Bioelectrics, as it was named by

Schoenbach, is the science of using electric pulses to impact

biological systems. This technique can be applied in a variety

of fields and has led to groundbreaking research in the medical

field and beyond. Currently under the direction of Dr. Richard

Heller, the Frank Reidy Research Center for Bioelectrics is still the

leading force in the industry after more than a decade.

Many people are surprised to learn that researchers at Old

Dominion are conducting cutting-edge research for the treatment

of cancer and other medical conditions. Dr. Heller’s research on

electrogenetherapy to kill skin cancer cells has garnered worldwide

attention. In 2008, Dr. Heller and a team of researchers from

Florida reported safe and effective treatment of skin cancer in the

first-ever human trial of a gene-transfer process assisted by short

pulses of electricity. Just this past year, renowned cardiovascular

researcher Dr. John Catravas joined the CBE as the first-ever

Sentara Endowed Chair in Bioelectrics. Dr. Catravas’ research

investigates the process and involvement of inflammation in

cardiopulmonary disease, particularly pulmonary hypertension

and acute respiratory distress syndrome.

The research of professors Heller and Catravas represents only

a small percentage of the exciting, life-changing research that takes

place at the Frank Reidy Research Center for Bioelectrics on a

daily basis. In addition to cancer and cardiovascular research, more

than 50 scientists at the CBE are using the field of bioelectrics to

study wound healing, medical imaging, vaccine development and

bacterial decontamination. Over the years, researchers at the CBE

have secured millions of dollars in research grants and over 40

U.S. patents. They have also contributed to countless publications,

conferences and forums for the advancement of bioelectrics. In

addition, many undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students have

had the opportunity to conduct research and experiments under the

direction of leaders in the industry.

In 2013, Frank Reidy renewed his commitment to the Center

for Bioelectrics by generously agreeing to support the program with

a $3.5 million gift. Newcomer Dr. Catravas summed up his hope

for the future and his appreciation for private support when he said,

“In today’s times of financial constraints, many institutions find the

research budget an attractive target for cuts. ODU appears to be

a fortunate exception. I am enthusiastic about the Old Dominion

culture of promoting research activities and optimistic about the

future of my program and of the Frank Reidy Research Center for

Bioelectrics.” The research being done at the CBE has the potential

to save lives and improve health and wellness for future generations;

that is an investment worth making.

<A Decade of Bioelectrics

A Decade of Bioelectrics


his quote was found in Cathy Dowrick’s wallet after

she died, and was written on a piece of shredded

paper. It seemed to be the adage by which she lived.

An only child, Dowrick grew up on Virginia’s Northern

Neck. She lived on the family farm where she learned a wide

range of skills. She feared nothing—learned to fire rifles and

won awards at local Thanksgiving turkey shoots. Dowrick and

her mother later moved to McLean and then to Montross,

Va., where she lived most of her teen years.

Varied influences and experiences fueled her love of cars,

boats, woodworking, gardening, and most of all, sailing.

Dowrick spent a great deal of time with her hobbies and

approached each one with proficiency, precision and passion.

Her mother was an award-winning gardener, and lessons

gleaned from her mother’s expertise enriched Dowrick’s life as

she gardened throughout her years.

Dowrick went to Lynchburg College for a year but realized

how much she missed home. So, she returned to Montross and

volunteered in the lab at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond.

It was there that a pathologist, Dr. David Moreland, took an

interest in Dowrick and encouraged her to pursue a degree

in medical technology. Dowrick never forgot him, and she

credited Dr. Moreland with instilling in her a strong sense

of mentorship. She went on to graduate in 1969 from the

Medical College of Virginia (MCV) with a degree in medical

technology and received her master’s degree in 1972.

Dowrick worked for a while at MCV, and in 1972, she

landed a job at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where

she worked until her retirement. As a supervisor, Dowrick

encouraged several lab technicians to pursue their degrees,

always remembering how Dr. Moreland had influenced

her career, and feeling the need to pay it forward. Dowrick

taught continuously in the workplace, and she found

that role extremely rewarding. She always tried to find an

individual’s strength, and while that individual might not

be doing particularly well in a specific job, Dowrick tried to

see where his or her talents could best be utilized within the

organization.

In 1982, Dowrick helped form the local chapter of

Clinical Laboratory Management Association. She was

president and held several other positions in the Virginia

Society of Medical Technology and the American Society

of Medical Technology. Dowrick did research at MCV

and published several papers, but was most interested in

helping those whom she felt were talented enough to pursue

an education in medical technology. Dowrick held several

certificates in hematology and was a member of Alpha Mu

Tau Fraternity.

On September 6, 1972, Dowrick was invited by Old

Dominion University Vice President Charles Burgess to

be an adjunct faculty member in the biology department.

Courses she taught included The Evaluation of Hematologic

Diseases, Bone Marrow Evaluation, Platelet Development

and Disorders, Coagulation Review, and The Evaluation

of Hemostasis. Dowrick enjoyed the opportunity to be a positive

influence in the lives of her students at ODU, which she

continued to do throughout her tenure.

Dowrick was small in stature, weighing only 98 pounds,

but larger than life. Kathy Judge, a colleague, told Dowrick at

her retirement from Sentara, “When we came into a room for a

healthy debate, it was you who was able to calm everyone down.”

A saying Dowrick once found on a calendar and kept

through the years probably describes her best: “People are drawn

to those with a quiet inner confidence, people who don’t need to

make themselves look good, be ‘right’ all the time, or steal the

glory.” She was a quiet introvert who loved those around her and

quietly shared that love with her family, friends and colleagues.

Dowrick left this earth much too soon, but her life set a high

standard for how to “make a life by what we give” to others. She

brought out the best in people and gave back by quietly sharing

her wisdom, as well as her material possessions. Her legacy

lives on through The Cathy Dowrick Memorial Endowed

Scholarship. The scholarship will benefit ODU students

who have chosen medical technology as their major. It also

exemplifies what it means to “live a life by lovingly giving back.”

Sailing With a Purpose

“Do what you love, for who you love” – That is the mantra

of senior sailing standout Chloe Constants. Before coming to Old

Dominion, Constants was a soccer star in her hometown of Annapolis,

Md., with dreams of playing soccer in college, but a career-ending

injury changed her plans. Having been a recreational sailor her whole

life, Constants shifted her focus from the field to the water. After just

two seasons of competitive sailing, Constants was accepted to Old

Dominion University and earned a spot on the sailing team.

After a successful freshman year at ODU, she returned to

Annapolis for the summer. During the summer break, tragedy struck.

Constants’ younger sister, Olivia, who had always followed in her

footsteps, died during a tragic sailing accident. Suddenly the sport

that had given Constants so much had taken away one of the most

important people in her life.

Upon returning to Old Dominion for her sophomore year,

Constants struggled to get back on the water. She credits her coaches

and teammates for allowing her to take baby steps to return to sailing.

One of the team’s ways of showing support was by displaying a custom

burgee, which is a special sailboat flag, in Olivia’s memory. She also

gained strength from the fans. Knowing that ODU alumni and friends

were providing support behind the scenes gave her more motivation

to sail again. Once she returned to the water she found a renewed

passion for the sport. She set sail to honor Olivia. Since her return to

the water, Constants has been better than ever. Through hard work and

determination she earned All-American honors in 2013.

While Olivia’s death was painful for Constants, she has also learned

from it. She has become a silent leader for her teammates and a role

model for anyone who is facing a personal challenge. She is striving to

become better-rounded and recognizes that you have to take advantage

of everything in life instead of focusing all of your time and energy on

one activity.

To honor Olivia, the Constants family established a foundation in

her name that awards scholarships to young people who embody the

spirit of Olivia and grants for programs that would make Olivia proud.

Constants’ experience with the Olivia Constants Foundation has given

her a new perspective on philanthropy. Having been on the receiving

end of funding from donors to the Old Dominion University Sailing

Program, Constants has always been aware of the value of private

support but, now that she knows what it takes to run a foundation,

she has a greater appreciation for all that she has been given.

Constants wants to remind her teammates, and all of her fellow

Monarchs, that they should never take anything for granted. She

encourages them to “Do what you love, for who you love” and, if

you can, give back to what you love so that it can be enjoyed by

others for years to come.

The 1930 Society Members

embership in The 1930 Society is bestowed upon alumni and friends who have

designated ODU as a recipient of their estate or other planned gifts. Outstanding

public universities are built as the result of continuing generous private support.

The 1930 Society reflects the vision of ODU’s founders and supports their mission to

educate students from Norfolk and afar for generations to come. Bequests, including

annuities, stocks and other appreciated assets, may be used for membership.

Educational Foundation Board of Trustees

n April 14, 1955, the charter was signed for the College of William

and Mary, Norfolk Division, Educational Foundation. At the first

meeting of the trustees in November 1955, the board presented and

adopted bylaws, adopted the foundation seal and elected trustees and officers.

These actions formally established the foundation to receive, administer and

distribute funds and property of all kinds, exclusively to further the educational

activities and objectives of the college. On November 5, 1962, the Old Dominion

College Educational Foundation expanded its goals to include raising funds for

the faculty salary supplements and for the library. Since its charter was signed, the

Educational Foundation has continued to broaden its support to the university.

Old Dominion Athletic Foundation Board of Trustees

stablished in 1964 by Friends of the University, the

Athletic Foundation has as its mission the development

of a high-quality athletic program for Old Dominion.

The foundation strives to support each of the university’s 18 athletic

programs, including baseball, men’s and women’s basketball,

field hockey, football, men’s and women’s golf, lacrosse, rowing,

men’s and women’s sailing, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and

women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis and wrestling.

Real Estate Foundation Board of Trustees

stablished in 1995, the Real Estate Foundation was formed to

receive, acquire, manage and develop real estate for the benefit of the

university. Governed by a board of trustees, the foundation currently

owns and manages properties on the Norfolk campus, the Virginia Beach

Higher Education Center and the Tri-Cities Higher Education Center. The

ODU Real Estate Foundation is one of the largest in the Commonwealth of

Virginia with assets over $90 million. The foundation continues to develop one

of its most ambitious projects, University Village, a 75-acre, mixed-use project

that includes retail shops, restaurants, an art gallery, a bookstore, theatres, office

research buildings, a hotel and student apartments.

he Endowment Fund for the University and its Foundations experienced

a second consecutive year of robust growth in 2013 with a net increase

of over 11% to a total value of $188 million. The increase reflects

substantial real growth in the endowments. Overall, the endowment pool earned

a respectable investment return of 12.5% for the 12 months ending in December

2013, resulting in a net of fee increase of over $22 million in market value. Our

total investment pool, which includes the $188 million endowment, exceeded $193

million this past year, with a goal to exceed the $200 million milestone in 2014.

Continued strong market returns coupled with recent announcements of

substantial future donations will help to ensure meeting that goal. While absolute

performance was good, we did lag our benchmarks slightly this past year but are

expecting at least benchmark performance in 2014. The Investment Committee

affirmed its commitment to a strategic asset allocation that includes 40% in

equities, 45% in alternative investments and 15% in fixed income. Additional

commitments made in the past year to real estate, energy and private equity

investments will provide increased diversification and a portfolio less subject to the

volatility of the traditional equity markets.

The Foundations’ Investment Committee continues to strive to maximize

the value of the endowment and work to ensure future generations of Monarchs

and faculty have the same, or greater, relative benefit in the decades to come. As

reported last year, the Foundations are continuing the implementation of their

revised spending policy, moving from a 4.5% rate to 4%. The plan is now being

implemented over a three-year period that began in 2013. During the past year, the

Foundations provided over $11 million in both annual and endowed support to

vital University programs in support of its strategic plan.
