What is ?

o A scheme the school adopted last academic year. o Very structured and fast paced; rapid teaching

and learning of sounds and blending.o All children involved, every session. o Taught throughout Foundation and Key Stage

Sounds

o All words are made up of sounds. o These are called phonemes. o In English there are 44. o We use ‘Fred Talk’ to help the

children to hear each sound within a word.

Page 4: Foundation Phonics Meeting

Graphemes

o A grapheme is a sound written down. o English is a very complex code –

there are more than 150! o More than one way to spell each

sound. o For example: a_e in came, ay in play,

ai in rain, ey in they.

o green - dreem kee hee happee dream key he happy

o light - kight fligh Igh igh tigh kite fly I eye tie

o blow - smowk flowt gow mowst smoke float go most

o moon -broot bloo groo brute blue grew

spelling and reading would be much easier!

Pronunicationo It’s really important to say the sounds

and not the names of the letters at this stage.

o Try not to add ‘uh’ onto the end of sounds.

o Pronunciation guide video. o https://global.oup.com/education/

Fredo Fred helps children learn to read.

o Fred can only talk in sounds...

o (Fred can only say c_a_t, he can’t say cat).

o We call this Fred Talk.

o If your child can understand Fred talk they can blend orally.

o Blending is needed for reading.

Page 10: Foundation Phonics Meeting

Fred

o Fred helps children learn to spell too!

o Children convert words into sounds. This is called segmenting.

o They press the sounds on to their fingers...

o We call this Fred Fingers.

Once children know all Set 1 sounds

o We move on to ‘independent blending.’ o Teacher says a word e.g. tin and the

children use ‘Fred Fingers’ to say each sound in the word.

o They then make the word, finding the graphemes themselves rather than using the teacher’s model.
