New fundraising priorities hit close to home

HeartThree years ago, NCH and its team of cardiovascular specialists established a vision to create a comprehensive program that would mirror the best medical centers in the nation while still providing personal and compassionate care that is uniquely NCH. Thanks to the philanthropic partnership of our community and the expertise of our physicians and staff, this vision is coming to life.

The final piece? A $6 million project to bring the latest in diagnostics and minimally-invasive procedures to patients facing structural heart conditions – issues such as congenital heart disease, diseased valves, or cardiomyopathy.

The centerpiece of the project is a Hybrid Cardiac Cath Lab that provides real-time imaging and the space for a large group of physician specialists to surround a patient undergoing one of these new ground-breaking procedures. These minimally invasive procedures can sometimes replace the need for open-heart surgery resulting in faster recovery times with fewer side effects and complications from treatment. Sometimes open-heart surgery is not even an option because of age or other illness. For those patients, these new procedures will not only improve quality of life, in many cases, they will save lives.

There are few degrees of separation between any one person and the words heart disease and cancer. Whether it is something that affects one personally or it has touched a family member, friend, or co-worker, these conditions hit close to home. Northwest Community Healthcare is looking to make great advances in these two areas and identifying ways for our community to help.

CancerCancer turns your world upside down. In the middle of that uncertainty, being in a familiar place—with your doctors and surrounded by family and friends—can be a source of comfort and security. It is why NCH has dedicated itself to building a nationally-recognized oncology program within our community: a program anchored by top clinicians who are committed to bringing the latest treatments and technologies to NCH. With the support of our community, NCH seeks to acquire the latest and most advanced patient-centered radiation therapy available, the new Halcyon linear accelerator by Varian Medical Systems. It represents a once-in-a-generation breakthrough in cancer treatment.

Any patient who has experienced the daily routine of radiation therapy sees the Halcyon difference right away: it doesn’t look anything like existing

technologies; in fact it looks more like a CT scanner. That alone eases a patient’s anxiety. The entire project, estimated at $4.9 million, is more than just looks; quiet operation, accuracy, and efficiency bring a calming reassurance as well. The typical 30-step set up process for technicians is reduced to only 9 and radiation treatments can last as little as 54 seconds. Those minutes add up over the course of several weeks of treatment, not only in time but in comfort and safety. Together with two other existing radiation treatment systems, the Halcyon will complement all of our radiation oncology services to give every patient the best treatment options available.

Generous community members and gifts of all sizes are needed to help support half of the total cost of each of these projects – we are one-third of the way there! Call 847-618-4260 to learn how you can help.

Our Community, Our Hospital Mert and Shirley Fish’s “light bulb moment” of giving back

Their Lives TogetherIt was their passion for politics that brought Mert and Shirley Fish together. Shirley, born on a farm in Minnesota, made her way to Chicago after graduating with a degree in finance from the business school at the University of Minnesota. Not a small feat, considering Shirley was one of only 17 women in a class of 700 men. That accomplishment was just the beginning of Shirley’s trailblazing career that paved the way for other women to follow.

Mert was born and raised in Chicago and was serving his country in the military. Their paths first crossed at the 1960 Republican convention in Chicago where both were members of the Young Republican Party and each had responsibilities at the convention. Shirley and her girlfriend had been assigned to the Palmer House Hotel to hand out magazines containing information about convention activities, while Mert’s role was to deliver these magazines to the hotel. Shirley was ready at her post but the magazines had not been delivered. When a young man, Mert, came barreling into the hotel with an armful of magazines, he and Shirley exchanged a few rather heated words regarding their responsibilities and about “who” was tardy. As the story goes, Shirley had the last word, which put a smile on Mert’s face, and the rest is history. Married for 54 years, Mert gladly confesses, “I definitely married up.”

Armed with her finance degree, Shirley applied for a job at Harris Bank and was offered a clerical position. It wasn’t the position she had hoped for, but it was a foot in the door. Along the way, Mert and Shirley moved around a bit eventually ending up in Park Ridge, and Shirley continued at Harris Bank in several different clerical roles. The bank had what they called a “wish book” where employees aspiring to hold different positions could share their career goals.

Shirley shared hers, and after 16 years she was finally promoted to a Personal Trust Investment Portfolio Manager.

Mert continued his work in the military and after 12 years of active duty was stationed at the Army Reserve facility on Central Road in Arlington Heights, steps away from the NCH Campus. Mert remembers when the ground was broken. In response to an invitation from NCH, Mert and his co-workers often enjoyed lunch in the hospital’s cafeteria.

Their Rewarding RetirementMert’s military career spanned 12 years of active duty and 14 years in the Army Reserves. He is a Vietnam Veteran and retired as a Sergeant Major. Shirley was a Vice President at Harris Bank. In retirement, Shirley has been very active in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) on both the local and state level for 25 years and also enjoyed playing golf at Arlington Lakes Golf Club. Mert registered voters

for several years in Maine Township and later in Arlington Heights. He also coordinated the election judges in Park Ridge and Arlington Heights. Together, they traveled the world and spent time taking road trips visiting national parks and hiking the trails; alternating years they would fly to sun and sand locations. “We were blessed to have been given such wonderful and fulfilling lives,” said Mert and Shirley.

In 2001, they turned the page on a new chapter in their rewarding retirement when they relocated to the Moorings of Arlington Heights and made new friends. A welcome addition to the family came in 2011 with their shelter cat, Annie, who has both Mert and Shirley wrapped around her furry paws.

The move from Park Ridge to Arlington Heights also meant a new medical home – Northwest Community

Hospital. Mert and Shirley began attending NCH Foundation and health education events and became members of the President’s Circle, the Foundation’s annual giving society. They always appreciated the value of having NCH right down the road even if at the time only for annual visits and minor healthcare needs. Both in fairly good health, they considered this a blessing. It wasn’t until the spring of 2017 when Mert and Shirley found themselves in need of more serious medical care, facing what would turn out to be some critical healthcare challenges for both of them. They found themselves making regular visits to the hospital’s Busse Center for doctor appointments, and the hospital for outpatient treatments and for several overnight, inpatient stays. They were always grateful for the compassionate care they received from everyone they encountered at NCH.

Mert and Shirley Fish are just two of the many generous and caring people belonging to Northwest Community Hospital’s family of Living Legacy members who have included NCH in their estate plans or are making another type of planned gift. They remind us that leaving a legacy is not about our accomplishments but about the ways in which we touch others.

Mert and Shirley Fish’s “light bulb moment” of giving back continued

You have the power… to make a lasting gift

Have you considered remembering NCH in your estate plans? It is a meaningful way to make a special investment in the life of our community. Please be sure to let us know so that we can welcome you to our Living Legacy Society.

For sample language or more information please contact, Maggie McLaughlin at 847-618-4272 or email [email protected].

Their Legacy, Their GiftIn late summer, likely after one of their visits to the hospital, Shirley and Mert reflected on the decisions they had made in their estate plans. Shirley referred to this as their “light bulb moment.” They had drawn up estate plans some 30 years ago and had initially chosen to include a bequest to a national cancer organization. Several years later, while reviewing their estate plans, they thought that a national heart organization would be more appropriate because most of their respective families had passed away from heart disease or stroke.

That “light bulb moment” came when they realized that while these are worthy organizations, Shirley and Mert now call Arlington Heights home. They want to make a difference in their community, for their friends,

and to ensure that patients who come after them have the same experience of outstanding and compassionate care. They are grateful to have such a wonderful hospital, doctors and caregivers right in their own community and are pleased to play a part in its future.

Mert and Shirley have designated their bequest to support the needs of Cancer Services at NCH. Shirley remarks, “Every day there are new and exciting advances in cancer treatments, technology and care, but with those advancements come an expensive cost.” Throughout their lives, Mert and Shirley have shown compassion for others – Mert’s service to our country and Shirley’s paving the way for women to succeed in finance and business. Looking back, Shirley says with confidence, “We have no regrets.”

Editor’s note: Shortly after they shared their story, Mert passed away. He will be greatly missed but his legacy will live on through his generosity to this community and his service to his country.

Ken BrownIn 2014, Ken turned to Malcolm Bilimoria, M.D., in his fight against pancreatic cancer. Ken said “Dr. Bilimoria, his staff,

and the entire staff at NCH were instrumental in my treatment and recovery and I am here today because of their dedication, skill, and expertise.” Ken joined the President’s Circle and made his first gift to NCH Foundation a year after his surgery.

An avid hiker, when he learned in a follow-up visit in 2017 that Dr. Bilimoria had planned to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Ken was quick to say “you can’t go without me.” And so it was planned. Ken’s story and emotional climb was picked up by WGN, CBS2, ABC7, Fox32, WBBM, and local newspapers but the story didn’t end there. Ken shared his experience in a very personal appeal to family, friends, and clients throughout the country. Not only did he raise more than $32,000 to support the pancreatic program at NCH, he spread the word about NCH far and wide—some might say from the mountaintops. Read more about Ken’s story at nch.org/kenbrown.

Andrew SansardoWhen Andrew walked into the NCH Foundation office to share his story, it started very simply, “I don’t have any pain.” Something most people would take for granted was about to open a whole new world of possibilities for Andrew who had

chronic pain every day for most of his life. He suffered from knock-knees since he was a child and coupled with arthritis, the pain for this very active professional became unbearable. Already having conquered losing over 200 pounds, he sought answers to the pain. James Hill, M.D. from Illinois Bone & Joint Institute performed bilateral knee replacement at NCH—it not only helped the pain but also straightened his legs for the first time. He experienced a seamless transition to NCH’s inpatient rehabilitation unit and then on to physical therapy at the Wellness Center.

Andrew made a generous contribution to join the President’s Circle around the same time WGN TV’s Erin Ivory (pictured with Andrew above) picked up Andrew’s story. Andrew remarks, “There’s an NCH difference – it’s compassion, going the extra mile and making sure patients not only have the best information but the best life moving forward.” See WGN’s report at nch.org/andrew.

Community BenefitCommunity isn’t just part of our name; it symbolizes our responsibility to care for our patients and neighbors in the northwest suburbs, and it is our privilege to do so. Through collaborative partnerships and generous donations, NCH directed $59.2M in 2017 to enhance the health and welfare of those in need. This included $9.6M in charity care and $1.4M in subsidized health services. To learn more visit: nch.org/communitybenefitreport.

President’s Circle members make the news, promote NCH in prime-time

At first glance, President’s Circle members Ken Brown and Andrew Sansardo might not have a lot in common, but their extraordinary stories and appreciation for the physicians and staff of NCH have caught the attention of the media over the last six months.

Dear Donors and Friends,

8

Thank you to all of our donors who have shared your resources for the benefit of others and have shared your story—and ours—in an effort to promote the amazing people, technology, and care available at Northwest Community Hospital.

It is an honor to know and share the special story of Mert and Shirley Fish in this newsletter. They are an inspiration to us all. Every donor brings their unique story and yet, like Mert and Shirley, each story reminds us of the importance of community and the impact that NCH has upon those we care for.

The hospital’s unique story is that we continue to be independent, guided by those we serve, to achieve excellence. It is a great story to tell. I want to thank Janet Boyle who has told that story well over the last four years as chair of our Foundation Board of Trustees. Janet’s enthusiasm for NCH and fundraising has continued to move the Foundation forward and has highlighted its importance in advancing care that will benefit patients and families in this community for years to come. Thank you, Janet!

It is also my honor to welcome Dick Hoffman as our new chair. Dick has served as a Foundation Trustee since 2013 and as a member of the NCH Board of Directors since 2016. As a business leader, he has done much to bring entrepreneurs and leaders around the table to partner with NCH as members of our Corporate Partners program.

Thank you again to each and every one of you who have helped this incredible organization grow and flourish.

David K. Ungurean Executive Director NCH Foundation

NCH is an incredible resource for our community. Although independent, we are part of an extensive network of partnerships. Other healthcare providers, educational institutions, businesses, social service agencies, and you, our donors, partner with us

to provide that additional margin of excellence for our patients. Thank you for all that you do to support this mission.

NCH has played an important role in the life of my family, friends, and employees but it was a personal invitation that caused me to get more involved. So I encourage you to personally ask someone you know to become more involved as a donor and ambassador for NCH.

Most of all, I want to thank you for your generosity. I look forward to working with our donors, board members, and volunteers in the years ahead as we achieve great things at NCH for our community and all those who rely upon us.
