Native corporation for Interior Alaska. As the private
foundation of Doyon, Limited, the Foundation serves the
educational and cultural needs of Doyon’s shareholders
and their children by providing post-secondary
scholarships, advancing traditional Native knowledge, and
working to increase Native student performance levels.
Since inception, the Foundation has awarded more than
$6 million in scholarships.

Dear Supporters,In the past year, Doyon Foundation took a remarkable step
forward with the launch of our Language Revitalization
Program, a comprehensive, region-wide program to
capture, preserve, share and maintain Athabascan
languages. Doyon, Limited supported the birth of this
program with a generous $150,000 grant last fall.
This program addresses an urgent need. According to the
Alaska Native Language Center, there are less than 500
speakers of the nine Athabascan languages in the Doyon
region. There are also insufficient numbers of qualified
Athabascan language teachers, and no solid, region-wide
language revitalization effort to provide easily accessible
language learning programs. Perhaps most importantly,
research has shown that the ability to speak one’s language
is essential to strong self-identity, self-esteem and the
preservation of cultural beliefs, values and traditions.
Through this new program, we now have the ability to find
ways for shareholders and other interested individuals to
learn their language. The new language program, working
in tandem with our scholarship program, also allows us
to more fully fulfill our mission “to provide educational,
career and cultural opportunities to enhance the identity
and quality of life for Doyon shareholders.”
This effort wouldn’t be possible without our language
revitalization committee, an active group of volunteers.
While the program just officially launched, these dedicated
individuals have spent the past four years conducting
research, developing relationships, making plans, and
working to make the program a reality. We are deeply
thankful for them, as well as the Doyon, Limited and
Doyon Foundation boards for their commitment to
language revitalization.
Also new in 2012, we were
pleased to welcome two new
Foundation staff members.
Sommer Stickman joined us
as an administrative assistant,
and Maurine Isaacson became
our new scholarship program
manager in 2012. They are both
originally from Nulato, and Maurine is one of our alumni,
graduating last May with her BBA.
During our 2012 strategic planning session, we set
goals and an action plan for the next two years. Goals
included continual improvement of internal operations,
diversifying and growing revenue streams, developing
the framework for the language program, and increasing
student outreach.
We look forward to working on these goals in the coming
year, and providing you with an update on our progress
in next year’s annual report. We also invite you to stay
informed throughout the year by visiting our website,
subscribing to our blog and e-newsletter, and liking us on
Facebook!
Sincerely,
Doris Miller Executive Director
Doris Miller

Scholarship Policy Changes
Student Profile: Maudrey Kriska
Doyon Foundation implemented a number of scholarship policy changes during the 2011 – 2012
academic year, including:
• Removal of the September 15 winter vocational scholarship application deadline
• Change in part-time credit requirements to six – 11 credits for undergraduate students, and 3 – 8
credits for graduate students
• Allowing students to submit official transcripts just once, the first time they apply for a scholarship,
in an academic year
Maudrey Kriska dreams of becoming a nurse, but last summer, she focused her attention on the Morris Thompson Memorial Golf Classic in her role as Doyon Foundation’s summer intern.
During her May through August internship, Maudrey did “everything and anything involving the Morris Thompson Memorial Golf Classic,” which took place June 14 and 15 in Fairbanks.
Maudrey, originally from Koyukuk, is a 2011 graduate of Nenana High School. After two semesters at the University of Alaska Anchorage, Maudrey transferred this fall to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where she is studying nursing.
“One thing I am most positive about is that I am going to graduate from college with a degree in nursing. That will allow me to give back to our people and work in a field that I enjoy,” Maudrey said.
Maudrey said she interned at the Foundation to gain work experience and to learn about Doyon – but there ended up
being several added benefits. “This internship allowed me to branch out into new ideas for my own future,” she said. “I’ve been thinking about a minor in business to accompany my major in nursing.”
She also gained experience and confidence in her abilities. “I used to be scared to answer the phone when I first started and now I can talk to anybody without hesitation. I can’t put it all into words, but working at the Foundation has helped me grow into a better, brighter individual,” Maudrey said. “I’d like to thank Doyon Foundation for the wonderful opportunity that they’ve given me and the great experience I’ve gained over the months.”
Maudrey is the daughter of Hugh and Karen Kriska, and the granddaughter of Hugh Kriska, Sr. and the late Eleanor Kriska, and the late Maudrey and Henry Sommer. She has six siblings, Trina, Shanda, Leon, Cassandra, Julie, and Hugh III (Binka).

Alumni Association Activities The Doyon Foundation Alumni Association continues to be an active group that is important to our success. To date, these
volunteers have fundraised to provide two new computers to students in need, and spearheaded a pledge drive at the 2012
Doyon, Limited annual meeting. In addition, they continue to help with our student dinners, delivering snacks to students
during finals week, and making reminder calls about upcoming scholarship deadlines. We are so grateful for these alumni who
continue to find ways to “pay it forward” to current students.
Congratulations to the college, high school and even Head Start graduates who achieved their educational goals in 2012.

Alumna Profile: Felisha CooperFelisha Cooper has completed two degrees – all without ever stepping foot in a classroom. Felisha, a Doyon Foundation scholarship recipient, was able to do this through the University of Phoenix Online.
“I chose to do my higher education completely online because I wanted to be able to work full time, and still have a flexible schedule. The major benefit from doing it online was being able to get it done quickly and at my own pace,” she said.
Felisha, who is originally from Galena and now lives in North Pole, completed the coursework for her second degree – a bachelor’s in business administration – last spring. She obtained an associate’s degree in business two years ago.
But don’t expect her to stop there. Felisha, who works as a program assistant with the Fairbanks Alcohol Safety Action Program at Fairbanks Native Association, already has plans to work on a degree in criminal justice.
“My goal for the future is to learn as much as possible, even if that means to obtain one or two more degrees,” she said.
Although she’s eager to continue her education, it hasn’t always been an easy journey. Felisha says the biggest challenge was not having instructors or counselors she could talk to in person.
“The advice I would give to other students regarding furthering their education online is to be prepared not to have someone that you can actually meet with for questions,” she said.
The other challenge she faced was finances.
“I have come to realize that furthering your education can be very expensive, and with the help of the Doyon Foundation, it has definitely made a difference. When I go for my next degree, I hope to have the support of the Doyon Foundation again,” said Felisha, who is the daughter of Richard Esmailka and Christine Cooper, and the granddaughter of the late Edgar “Sam Billy” Esmailka, the late Wilhelmina Yaska, Paddy Yaska, Claude Cooper and Jean Keogh.

Focus on Fundraising
Morris Thompson Memorial Golf ClassicThe 2012 Morris Thompson Memorial Golf Classic, held June 14 and 15 in Fairbanks, raised a total of $58,693 for the Morris
Thompson Scholarship Fund, an endowed fund benefiting Alaska Native, higher education students studying business
management and leadership. The event, our largest fundraiser of the year, drew 124 players, including U.S. Congressman Don
Young. A total of 50 sponsors and nearly 30 volunteers also contributed to the event’s success.
Pick. Click. Give.2012 was the first year we participated in the Pick. Click. Give program, which allows Alaskans
to donate a portion of their PFD to various nonprofit organizations. Last year, 78 Alaskans gave
a total of $5,503 from their PFDs to the Foundation, including two donors who gave their entire
dividends.
Nee Ts’ee NeeyhIn addition, our 2012 Nee Ts’ee Neeyh (“We All Give or Help”) campaign raised $12,575 for scholarships; Tanana Chiefs
Conference and other donors contributed $5,750 for our health competitive scholarship; and the annual meeting pledge drive
led by the alumni association pulled in $975.
Doyon, Limited Board Chair Orie Williams, U.S. Congressman Don Young, Derek Fyten and Silas Alexander at the 2012 Morris Thompson Memorial Golf Classic.
U.S. Congressman Don Young, Doyon Foundation Executive Director Doris Miller, Doyon, Limited Board Chair Orie Williams, and Travis Frisk at the 2012 Morris Thompson Memorial Golf Classic.
Fundraising is a major area of emphasis for Doyon Foundation. In the 2012 fiscal year, we raised a total of $157,096 for
scholarships. These funds came from a variety of sources, including our annual Morris Thompson Memorial Golf Classic,
Pick. Click. Give., our annual Nee Ts’ee Neeyh (“We All Give or Help”) campaign, the 2012 Doyon, Limited annual meeting
pledge drive, and Tanana Chiefs Conference. In addition, we received a generous $1.9 million contribution from our largest
supporter, Doyon, Limited.
DonorsThank you to the corporate, individual, Nee Ts’ee Neeyh, Pick. Click. Give., and in-kind donors, as well as the volunteers, who
showed their support of Doyon Foundation during the 2011 – 2012 fiscal year.
